Review from Adam M.
Chula Vista, CA
When I first started eating here a decade and some years ago, it was 'The Chile Bandido, and it was AWESOME!
When it underwent a name change some years ago to 'Buenos Dias' the quality suffered, and I swore it off after too many returns of the Taco Shack Two-Step.
They've undergone another name change, and they are back to the form that made me love them so much.
Portions are large, the drive-thru is one of the fastest going, the food is excellent.
Let's start with the basics.
Beans are excellent - even for not being made with lard.
Guacamole is fresh, and this incarnation has been VERY consistant.
Salsas - red and green. Made there and VERY, VERY good. Some self-absorbed folks will no doubt complain that "the sauces aren't hot enough. Baaawwwww!" - in that case, you should carry around you own bottle of sauce made from your own Thai peppers and habaneros - like I do... The house salsas have excellent flavor.
I have found that the seafood is good quality again - fresh and well prepared.
If you are trying to stuff enough good greasy food to forestall a hangover - I can suggest the carne asada fries: An obscene pile of french fries covered in the guts of a carne asada burrito (carne, guacamole, onions, et cetera). I can put these away like there's no tomorrow, but I still need help from a friend to do so.
Flying saucers: Nice and big, the way any self-respecting super-tostada should be. They don't stint on ANYTHING.
The Bandido Burrito: One of my favorite items from three business names ago - a LARGE carne asada burrito that also has a very excellent chile relleno crammed in with the carne.
.
If you have never been, check it out. If you haven't been in a while - c'mon back. -

Buenos Dias, Juerro!
This place is the hotness, definitely. As far as taco shops are concerned, Buenos Dias stacks up with some of the best that you will find in the ultra-competitive market of taco shops in San Diego County. If you have not been to this place yet, and you live anywhere near it... you are a complete putz. Foolish, foolish behavior on your part and you should be publicly scrutinized because of it. Now, please allow me to elaborate on the key elements of this hot spot that earn my highly sought after respect.
First, there is a drive-thru and it is always open... and always poppin'. Be prepared to wait. This is not a bad thing actually because this is one of those places where the more you wait, the more you want it. And the better it is. Just like the hibbity dibbity. Also, a clutch element that not all hole-in-the-wall establishments offer.... they accept debit or credit cards. This is key. You see, as a driver, you can easily con your good friend, who is drunk and sleeping with his head on the window, to pay for everyone's food with his debit card, thus, maintaining your personal wealth. They are open 24 hours a day, earning mega respect along the way. It is often times the final destination of your night, and ranks as a solid to very-solid choice if this is indeed your last stop of the night.
#1 Reason to go to Buenos Dias: The Bandito Burrito. First of all, this is easily the best name ever given to an item on a Mexican food menu. Its like you take a bite and then you are suddenly robbing people's horses and saddles, shooting the local sheriff on your way to watch the sunset in Ensenada, singing the Mariachi classic, Anoche Estuve Llorando, at the top of your lungs. This thing is serious. How serious? Basically, this thing should come with extended warranty because you would fight someone for defacing it's value. It comes with carne asada, a huge chile relleno, rice, and cheese. Now, to make this thing the "Bandito Burrito Ultimo" as I would like to call it.... do yourself a favor and add some beans and sour cream to this thing and ooohhhhhh weeeeeee, son!!!!! Unstoppable, every bite is smashin'.
#2 Reason to go to Buenos Dias: The RED hot sauce. This stuff is pipin' hot and full of flavor, so give this burrito what it deserves and dump it on your goods.
Now, you may wonder why the 4 stars, not 5.... well, let me tell you about a few things that are holding this place back from the premium rating.
Reason #1: They attempt to hold back on the red hot sauce and try to slide in some thick and swampy looking green sauce. Do not let them intimidate you. Be assertive, let them know what you want. You want red sauce. Tell them to give you plenty of extra red sauce. Demand RED SAUCE!!! Now, they may throw you a death stare for this antic, but fear not, the red sauce will ease all anxiety in just a few moments.
Reason #2: Their tortillas are not all that great. This may be the one thing that is holding them back, completely. You see, the tortilla is every bit as important as the rest of the ingredients. These tortillas could use a little more flour and a little more durability. With these minor adjustments, the President of the United States would be eating here every Tuesday just before addressing his staff.
Reason #3: They have this burrito called the "Paul Burrito." I want to find Paul and slap that fool in the lips. Do you want to know what you might find inside of a Paul Burrito? Rice. Cheese. And......... that is all !!! I mean, does this burrito, suitable for a toddler, deserve space on the menu? If anyone really dared to order such a thing, it would obviously be a custom design, and would deserve a protest by the head chef operating the grill. This is a true travesty.
Eat at Buenos Dias. Trust me. -

La Mesa, CA
Buenos Dias is your run of the mill 24 hour greasy Mexican food place, but fits the bill nicely. Known as the "Dirty Mexican Place" or "Buenos Diarrheas" by those who eat here regularly (myself and many of my coworkers included).
The Bandito burrito is by far my favorite- a carne asada burrito with enchillada sauce and a chile relleno packed inside. It's like a heart attack lovingly wrapped in a tortilla. Great place to grab a quick burrito or order of rolled tacos after a night of drunken debauchery. One of the few Mexican restaurants I've found in this immediate area that's drive through and 24 hours.
In my years of regularly dining here I have gotten the old Montezuma's Revenge a few times unexpectedly, as did all who ate with me, so I know it was this place, but I still go without fail when it's late night and I need a Mex fix. Hey, a good colon cleaning is good for the system every now and then!
Good for breakfast burritos and the late night munchy run, but there are certainly MUCH better cheap Mexican places here in SD.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I don't know why I voluntarily went to a place once known as Buenos Diarrheas, but I did. I had my husband stop here on the way home from work to check it out and pick up some din-din. The name has changed as some Yelpers pointed out to El Sol...
This place was not that great. I HAVE had better - Lolita's, La Posta, El Compadre (on 2nd in El Cajon, which also has a drive-thru).
The tortillas were weird. I couldn't figure out what it was. They seemed shiny. The rolled tacos were decent. The bean and cheese burrito was more boring that it normally is. The quesadilla was okay. My husband had the Conga burrito and said it was only ok. Horchata = good.
We def won't be making a special trip here again.
P.S. I did NOT get the trots after eating here. Score! -

CARNITAS TACO! a little lime, a little cilantro, come here my porcine friend!
I take you home to meet my friend Margarita, yes?
Ok, bring your sister Carne Asada, and her cousin Quesadilla...I know a few tangy salsas that would like to make spicy with you.
Don't worry, I have protection...lots of napkins and antacid tabs. Heehe -

San Diego, CA
Many people including myself will swear by this place, but by no means is it the best taco shop in San Diego let alone La Mesa.
First of all, they have the best quesadillas ever. I'm not even joking. I've been to hundreds of taco shops and I've never had anything quite as perfect as a Buenos Dias quesadilla. On that note, try the Bacon Quesadilla.
The burritos are hit or miss. Well, some of them. I would recommend avoiding the carne asada. It's not bad, just bland. If you absolutely must get your carne asada fix, go for the Bandido or Conga burrito for a little extra kick. Usually when you should avoid the carne asada at a taco shop it means you shouldn't go there altogether, but this place has plenty of other options.
Carnitas is always fresh and juicy, and the Al Pastor will kick your ass. The breakfast burritos (there's plenty of other types other than what's seen on that menu picture) are some of the best I've had, especially the Machaca and Chorizo.
That's enough about burritos. They have plenty of other rarely explored options outside of the burritos portion of the menu. All of the combination plates, though a bit pricey (like much of their menu, one of their downsides) will not disappoint. The Chimichanga comes to mind. Rolled tacos are cheap, crispy, and made in 100% cholesterol-free oil. In fact, all of the fried treats are near-perfect. If you ever find yourself here around lunchtime, try something different and go for a torta. They're cheaper than the burritos and sometimes a little better.
So in conclusion Buenos Dias is a superb taco shop. The food is great, especially the quesadillas (seriously, try one). They're open 24/7, plenty of outside seating, and they take credit. What more could you ask for? Oh and don't forget to ask for plenty of red hot sauce. -

I'm about to type some of the dorkiest words I will have ever typed. Ready?
They put an addictive chemical in their burritos that make you crave them fort-nightly!
Anyone get it?
ahem, ok... now for the review.
I chose not to demerit Buenos Dias for being shiesty with their red hot sauce (and having flavorless salsa verde), raising their prices, or making me wait what feels like forever for my burritos because they are so busy all the time (actually i see that as a good thing, b/c it indicates how special they are that everyone wants their food.)
They were given 4 stars for these reasons:
-the potato & sour cream & cheese burrito. easily my favorite, despite its simplicity.
-the red hot sauce that is so coveted. they will try and satisfy you with the green, but don't be fooled.
-the smile the buenos dias burrito puts on my bf's face- precious.
-how fast they are once you do get up there in the line (back in the day i used to come here and drive-thru during my 30 minute lunch breaks nearby)
-their good variety of veggie options- just ask if you don't see them on the menu. and don't be put off by the fact that the paul burrito is just cheese and rice- get some quacamole in there and it's tasty.
the minus 1 is for the awful, nearly unbearable smell that exists outside of this place. WTF are they doing that this odor is created? I do not want to know.Listed in: for a good time call...

The burritos here are crazy big and very good.
The difference in tortilla does have a unique texture to it which makes Buenos Dias stand out among other taco shops scattered in San Diego. And the 24 hour aspect makes it an ideal place for late night cravings.Listed in: This Is The Table, Show Stoppers, Eat A Taco

Review from Andrew C.
Hands down, this is one of my favorite taco shops in La Mesa and probably top 3 in San Diego. Everything is prepared with vegetable oil so (like the painted window reads) everything is "cholsterol" free. Whatever. All that really means is that their tortillas take on this texture that I can't quite describe, but it's awesome. Almost like... well, no.. never-mind. I can't explain it.
Every taco shop has some item on the menu they excel at and this one should be noted for its burritos. Specifically the California Burrito. Wow... wow wow wow wow. When I lived in San Diego I came here WAY too much for that burrito alone. This place can be dangerous to your eating habits if you're not careful.. 24 hour establishments leave little room for excuses about not going on account of them "being closed".
I'm back in town in four days, for 16 days and I am guessing that I will hit this taco shop at least five times in that span of time. At varying hours of the day and night.Listed in: Sandy Eggo, Let's Get A Taco

Finally - good carne asada burritos near the new house.
Good tortilla, good guac, good meat, good salsa.
Good ooo-I-shouldn't-have-finished-that stomach ache after.

This is one of my favorite mexican food joints. Many a burrito has been devoured here after a long night of drinking and shenanigans.
Their plain old beef tacos are the best I've ever had...full of juicy shredded beef and greasy as hell, I'm in heaven.
But also their California burrito is the best I've had so far. It's thick and juicy with sour cream and all the good stuff already added in, for a mere $3 and change.
True, sometimes the tortillas do seem a little stiff and can fall apart easily, but for me that doesn't matter because if there's a fork near by, I'm still going to chow down.
They have an extensive menu with many items I have not even tried yet, but some of the reviews before mine have given me some excellent ideas of some new things to try.
So be sure you try this place some time and it will be a Buenos Dias. -

Ahhh me and the bf usually go here on the way to our friend's house for a UFC fight. Don't think I've ever gone here and had a terrible experience.
Well, that's if you don't count the guy calling me "senorita." Stop trying to woo me just gimme my damn salsa! And a lot of salsa doesn't mean 3 lousy cups!! MAS SALSA DAMMIT!!!!
Anywho, what's good? California chips w/ meat or carne asada. For me, the carne asada chips/fries is just too overwhelmed with meat so I usually get Cali chips/fries. Burritos are yummmy too. Oh and the last thing I got here were their enchiladas. Mmmm I think I want some now.
I don't think I can say anymore, I mean I am pretty satisfied with the food. Haven't been to too many taco places in the La Mesa area, but this one I'll keep going to. Oh yes, and this place definitely satisfies the late night cravings. *stomach growls* -

I drive two hours to eat here...that says it all
Yes...I drive from Orange County to San Diego to eat at this hole in the wall Mexican joint! The Al Pastor burrito is divine and the taquitos are addicting (and huge). Don't expect anything but a good meal here...no atmosphere, pass it through the side window service and cold benches to sit on...but you'll take your t-buds to nirvana and beyond...you're still sitting there? Get off your ass and go...now!!! Trust me, it's worth it!Listed in: Mexifornia

San Diego, CA
There appears to be a some debate over the quality of the tortillas here. Well, I'll settle it. The tortillas need work. I'm not knocking the place overall. I actually rather like it BUT yes, the tortillas are a bit weak.
Now, I've been eating here since this place was called Chile Bandidos many, many years ago. Me and my friends used to ditch high school all the time and ride over here for their Potato, Cheese and Sour Cream Burritos. I still love the damn things too, but only with their green salsa. Ever since they've become Buenos Dias California, I think the PCSC Burritos have gotten a little too salty, they're still good though. I also really like their Picadillo Tacos. If you've never had Picadillo, it's basically just ground beef with little chunks of potato stewed in a kind of tomato-y broth. Makes delicious tacos, especially with some sour cream.
Every once in a while during the summer time you get a distinct sewer smell in the immediate vicinity of the restaurant which personally grosses me out but, overall, I recommend this place. -

I don't often eat taco shop food, but when I am w/ one particular sister (I have six) we have to eat taco shop...
I think this place has the best vegetarian choices for a regular old taco shop. They even have potato roll tacos!! Mmmm..and they are good.
I have been eating here seems like forever, I grew up near by and can look back and remember it as a few different places. I gave it 3 stars, because I don't like their tortillas. They have great selections, but the tortillas are out for me, so it limits what I get to order (like the veggie burrito - my number one taco shop selection). -

San Diego, CA
Not the best taco shop, but it has potato rolled tacos and is pretty close to home. Its also open all night. Rolled tacos and burritos are always better on your way home from the bar.
I've been told the neighbors like to complain about noise, so keep it down when you're there at 3am. -

This is absolutely my favourite taco shop. I used to go there a lot when I lived in East County and I miss it now that I'm in Normal Heights.
They are always really nice and quick with your order, even if you ask for something special. My favorite here is the California Nachos (usually called super nachos at other places) with chicken. I'll have them add rice in with the beans in the nachos and they're cool about it. Bonus for being a drive through as well as having the walk up window. There are concrete tables and benches under some trees if you want to kick back and eat there. Lots of parking as they are near a laundrymat and a church. Food is less greasy than other taco shops so it doesn't feel as heavy...even though you get a lot of it!
Wish they'd build a second one over in my hood. -

One of my favorite taco shops in all of San Diego, but it seems to be taking a nose dive. Ate here tonight and it was descent, but super greasy. I know, I know, it's a taco shop, it's supposed to be greasy......but damn, my Quesadilla was swimming in fat. Still tasty though. The Horchata and Jamica were horrendous: Warm, sour, with the Horchata being completely undrinkable.
Hopefully, tonight was a fluke. -

I will give them five stars because of one thing: The bacon quesadilla. This magical, wonderful combination of foods was suggested to me on a midnight drunken food binge by another raving fan at their walk-up window. Make sure to order it with potatos and a side of sour cream.
They are the only place within a year's walk that accepts cards and is open 24 hours. They use no lard in their food and offer better vegetarian food options than anyone else.
They are very quick and polite. They have no inside dining, just a drive through and a walk up window with outside seating. -

La Mesa, CA
One of the few taco shops with in close proximity to my house.
I have given this place numerous tries and yet I am disappointed every time I go.
Friday night after a few glasses of wine my husband and I pulled through the drive thru around 11:00 pm. Their menu is exactly what you would expect from any other taco joint.
I decided to go with the California burrito and asked to add sour cream.
I was starving and couldn't wait to bite in to this monstrous burrito. Oh how sadly disappointed I was. I did ask for a California burrito right? Well what I ended up with was basically a carne asada burrito with maybe two french fries no cheese and low and behold not a trace of sour cream.
They packed so much carne into this thing that I actually had to take about 1/2 of the overly salty meat out.
After giving this place about five tries too many and sampling different menu items I have to give BDC two thumbs down. -
Review from Sarah C.
Moving to San Diego from the MidWest exposed me to numerous Mexican food options. While Buenos Dias was not the first, it was one of the best at the time. Now...well, let's just say smelling the grease trap on your way out of the laudromat next door leaves you a bit queesy...
HOWEVER-the Bandito is by FAR one of the tastiest things I have ever had. Try it. -

I grew up in La Mesa and believe me, I know my taco shops. This place is a must stop for me when I'm in San Diego, which is about 2x a month.
The hidden gem on their menu is the POTATO TACO. If you have ever met me, you know I can't stop eating these things. When I'm not eating one, I'm talking about how I need one. Basically, it's bomb ass mashed potatoes in a crunchy taco with lettuce, sour cream and cheese. A must try! And they are only a $1.50. You won't find it under tacos on the menu, but in the upper right hand corner as it's own entry "potato taquito."
**Caveat: eat this thing hot. It's not so delicious when it's cold.
Their carne asada burritos are near perfect. They are large; you can easily share one when you're not starving but they can definitely be eaten in one sitting with the right appetite. Add sour cream + cheese = I NEED ONE RIGHT NOW
This place has all the normal taco shop fare. Fair prices and it's fast. There are always people here, so expect to wait in line in the drive thru. There are patio seats if you want to park and eat here. -

I'm in an East County state of mind today...
Doesn't anyone remember when this was Chili Bandidos? That's a much cooler name, I swear.
Your usual taco shop, grease, guacomole, and beans. Great for late night dining meaning after a night of wastedness. In high school we used to go to house parties and then go to Bandidos for carne asada burritos. Oh-the memories!

I guess this is our "default" eating place when we don't feel like eating out or cooking. Once in a blue moon I've gotten something that wasn't up to par but 99% of the time it is dependable for good food. My favorites that I rotate between are the Carne Asada Burrito, Fish Burrito, and Carnitas Burrito, also the taquitos with guacamole. I have had the enchiladas in various forms and all have been good, also the Breakfast Burrito and Shrimp Burrito are great. When I just need a snack, I love the potato taquitos. They have reasonable prices, the burritos are usually huge and always good flavor. I don't get chips here because I like mine thin and crispy and most places don't fix them that way. I think I got the Carne Asada Fries once and found them to be too heavy to suit me. Sometimes I even cut the burrito in half, eat half and save the rest for the next day they are so huge. I used to love the bacon quesadilla and again it was so big I would eat it over 2 days. In fact, I think I will change my 4 stars to 5 for their consistency, the more I think about it. I especially like "the lady" who works there nights because she is always happy to see us and makes us feel welcome. Oh, and they're open 24 hours so if you're coming home late from somewhere you can count on them to be open.
I have 2 daughters who live out of town and the first thing they want to do is come here and get a carne asada burrito. I have taught them well.Listed in: My Neighborhood--La Mesa

Let me start off by saying that I have been coming here since they were an Alberto's back in the 80s (holy crap I am getting old). Given our long history together, I have forgiven the occasional bad service, wrong change, wrong order, etc. Sadly, this time they committed the unforgivable sin...really disgusting food.
Last week I was craving a burrito so I hit up the always busy drive thru window and ordered myself a pollo asado burrito. The whole thing went pretty smooth until I got home. I unwrapped the burrito and grabbed a quick bite and began chewing. A rank nasty taste filled my mouth and the smell of wet dog filled the air.
I had to call my wife in to smell this thing to make sure I wasn't losing my mind. Yep, she said my burrito smelled like a wet dog. Believe it or not she didn't want to take a bite after I asked her to make sure it really was disgusting...go figure.
Sadly after all these years I won't be back. Just the sight of the place makes me a little sick to my stomach now. -

Not too bad for a late night taco shop in La Mesa. I've spent many nights wandering over here at midnight or later and ordering a California burrito. It's very average for San Diego. I never expect much at 1 AM though, so maybe I'll try it during the daylight hours one day.

Best Vegetarian Burrito in San Diego. The Red and Green Sauce are both very good. The tortillas are excellent. Used to be called Chile Bandito and had a little Mexican thief as their mascot. I guess that was racist or something and they changed their name to Buenos Dias and a Del Taco rip-off logo. Weak.

As far as taco shops go, this one is on par with the best. We have been going here for a few years now and discovered it quite by accident. Everything is pretty good and the red sauce seems to vary in spiciness, which makes me think (or hope) that they actually make it fresh. Their breakfast burritos are a staple in my house on the weekends. And yes it's greasy. It's a taco shop. The only other problem with it is that your food quality and service will depend on who's working the window. If the "Mom" is working, you're golden. If the "Sons" are there working alone, watch out.

I used to eat there a lot when I lived on Mt Helix. Drive thru with FAST service, great breakfast, "Buenos Dias "burrito. One of my new favoites,,,,,order one carne asada taco........double soft tortilla and enough meat to make two tacos.....Calif chips also was one of my regulars. I still stop in frequetly. One of my co workers blames me on her 10 lb weight gain after she saw me eating one of their Buenos Dias Burritos,,,now she is hooked also. Never had any melt down problem and I have probably driven through over 100 times..........

I love this place, it's worth the extra dollar or two you will no doubt spend on your food. the portions are large and the ingredients are fresh. every so often your order may have an accidentally added piece of slaughter mammal though so if you are a vegetarian be extra emphatic about NO MEAT. the beans are lard free and yummy. if you are drunk and cannot drive but are within stumbling distance, this food will be worth the walk. if you are drunk i recommend five rolled tacos, not three because it will not be enough, trust me. if you are sober and broke i strongly recommend the PAUL BURRITO, it is the cheapest on the menu and it consists of rice and cheese, which contains protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and will not cause cancer as fast as cup-o-noodles.

This taco shop is really a converted Photomat (who remembers what those are?). My office used to be down the street so we'd send out every now and then. In San Diego, it shouldn't be hard to find decent mexican food. This place is just passable. Their machaca buritto is too runny and I've tasted better. Never had anything that smelled like a wet dog but it isn't my first choice for taco stand mexican food.

Some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. The California, Buenos Dias, and Breakfast Burritos are all excellent choices. The Horchata is good. The place is a little dirty (sometimes downright gross) but thats part of the charm. The fact that they are open really late is great for when you need a midnight snack. The prices are moderate for a restaurant like this but it is one of my favorite restaurants ever.
