There is NOTHING that compares to Bueno... I get depressed when i bite into a burrito from an Annas or any of the other chains i the Boston Area.

I love and miss bueno, i still occasionally make the trip to my home town and visit. Worth every bit of gas

If you're like me, you enjoy eating things that are roughly the size of your own head. It helps when those items are ridiculously delicious. These burritos are ridiculously delicious. If it hadn't been for Antonio's Pizza across the parking lot, I would have eaten here every day.

Disclaimer: If you eat here every day, you will feel neither bueno nor sano in the intestinal department.

Perhaps I'm a little biased because I absolutely adore burritos, but I'll tell you what, the burritos here are really some of the best I have every had.

If you're hungry, look no further.  Serving size is massive and will leave you feeling full for hours to come.  Think it's a little too much?  You have the option to go a little smaller for fifty cents less.  Need more?  You can get more for fifty cents more (don't let your eyes get bigger than your stomach)!  These burritos, even without "going grande" are the size of a little baby.  They're big and keep you full for hours!

With fresh materials and a plethora of different options to choose from, you can personally tailor a burrito to your exact tastes.  Not feeling a burrito?  Never fret!  You can also get tacos, quesadillas, and salads!  With said variety, it's possible to visit Bueno y Sano hundreds of times and still get something you've never gotten before that won't break your wallet.

The service is quick and you'll have your burrito within five minutes, tops.  They also provide free water and free hot and mild sauce!

Accessible for both lunch and dinner, you should definitely give this place a try if you haven't already.

Meh, we drove out of our way on a road trip to eat at this place. Got the special whatever burrito that everyone raves about. It was soggy. I guess in the middle of nowhere this is a Mexican respite, but does not compare if you have grown up near Mexican food meccas, e.g. California, Texas, Arizona.

So I guess since I have been eating burritos here for 12+ years now, i should write a review

But then again, the fact I keep going back after 12+ years is enough of a review.

    Just good food!

I normally get the same thing, and they have no issues with substitutions, etc.

bbq chix, pinto beans instead of black, no tomatoes, guac, medium sauce, yogurt (a great alternative to sour cream)

They make the stuff there. pico and guac made fresh daily. Salsa made there

Yes, since my time at Umass I have seen the price of a burrito go from $5 to $7.50... but so what. they are big and filling. a normal burrito is enough food for a meal for 90% of the people.

If somehow you don't know of this place yet, go now. Although I have no idea how anyone in amherst would not know about it). The one in Springfield is also identical and great.

good food. fresh, healthy, made to order.

Yes, it may be hard to order, you may not know all th options if it is your first time, and it may seem chaotic in the kitchen. but everyone knows what they are doing, and make your food quick and well!

    also good to try
    - stuffed jalpenos. grilled peppers stuffed with rice and cream cheese. yummy, but look like alien fingers
    - quesadilla - if you like cheese, they load them up. no skimping!
    - steak soft tacos. seriously. the soft tacos ar alike mini burritos. rolled up, stuffed tot he gills and just as good!

Actually, that nasty burrito isn't even cheap once you add on all the extras that are kind of essential on any burrito. Nothing about that burrito is good. The food is terrible and I don't know why I keep giving it another shot.

Some people may say this place is good...but those people are probably vegetarians and I have learned to never take restaurant advice from vegetarians.   This is the perfect example why.

Bueno y Sano has so many little flaws that it is almost funny how it succeeds.  First, the kitchen is run with apparently no order.  Your order can take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour to be ready.

The food is just bland.  While you're eating you might think..."where have I tasted this before?"...and then you realize that you had it when you were completely broke (and probably drunk and/or high) and decided to cook up a can of beans and some rice and throw it on a stale tortilla that has been sitting in your fridge since your last roommate moved out.
The food is poor people food, sold as cuisine, which barely makes it into the "under $10" category.  You will end up spending just under $10 bucks for a meal that would cost you under 50 cents to make.

Salt?  Pepper? Any seasoning whatsoever?  NOPE.  Bueno has not heard of such witchcraft.    But their beans are perfectly undercooked and strangely hard every time...consistently!!!

The food has absolutely no connection with mexico or any latin country.  It is just a second hand version which was concocted by some white Eastern Mass business major.

Go to Veracruzana if you really need some mexican food.  Although it's not the best, at least it has flavor and a semblance of authenticity.

Also, their doors open inwards which is against Massachusetts state law!!!
This food should be against the law too.

The price is right and the food is fresh.  Service is super friendly and they aim to please.  The food portions here are massive.  They offer smaller and larger sizes.  I can't imagine going for the larger size burrito.  They have limitless options to chose from for the fillings.  But go with your gut instinct.

The wife and I split the steak burrito with roasted garlic and the fish tacos.  Both were eyes are bigger than your stomach portions.  And then we also threw in some chips and salsa as well.  I didn't think that was enough, so I loosened the belt a notch and got some guacamole too.  The burrito managed to be eaten about 75% of the way.  The fish was gone, but the taco tortillas remained about 65%.  So the food portions were way more than enough.

As my wife is an alumnus of UMASS Amherst, she survived on 4 years of this delicious grub.  I can understand why it is so popular and becomes part of your college meal plan.

Next time around, I will bring an empty leg or a 2nd stomach to finish anything.

Bueno y Sano has a good selection of tasty burritos and quesadillas.

I recently visited with my brother (a local college kid) early on a weeknight.  We were able to order right away and our food took mere minutes to prepare.  After we sat with our food, the place filled up FAST with tons of college-aged kids and a few families looking for good, Mexican food.

Portions at Bueno y Sano are HUGE and the food is fresh.  I had a burrito with chicken, spinach, and garlic, and my brother had a chicken quesadilla.  We both had bottled teas/lemonades.  Neither of us was still hungry after we finished our food!

This is a great place to grab something to eat.

Great food and dont be afraid to venture outside of the burritos. Taco special is great and even going with a salad is a good option.
Their prices have slowly risen probably by a quarter, but they are still very reasonable especially since the food is very filling.

It's a unique burrito unto itself and 1 of the top 3 Amherst staples if you grew up there.  Huge healthy burritos on the cheap.  I remember sneaking out of high school to nab a big one on game days because this was the best option in town for my purposes and sorry but you can't play good soccer matches on chicken nuggets and tater tots every day.  Thank you Bueno Y Sano especially for always staying reasonably priced for your deliciousness!

Maybe the best burritos in the area, but thats partially because New England is not famous for authentic mexican fare.  If you're from the west coast or a mexican-food expert, you might be disappointed. For really authentic food, try Veracruzana. They are locations in Amherst and Northampton, just down the street from both Bueno y Sanos. Touring students from Spain were not impressed by the simple, americanized food of Bueno ... but whatever, it still tastes good to me!

I recommend the Salvadoran burrito, but you must add the bbq chicken. Otherwise, it won't be as a moist and flavorful. You can add sour cream too - or just get it on the side. The flavors of this burrito are definitely satisfying.

The homemade guacamole isn't wonderful - it's just okay. The quesadillas are a bit oily and the beans served with them are dry. But cheese + carbs (tortilla) + sour cream is always good.

I have never been disappointed by Bueno Y Sano.  The regular sized burritos are plenty big enough to satisfy your hunger.  What I love about the food is everything is extremely fresh and you can taste it in every bite.  Whether you're in the mood for tacos, burritos, chips, quesadillas, or guac, this is the place to try.  You won't be sorry.

I would literally drive nearly two hours on weekends just to get my Bueno y Sano fix.
The portions are awesome. A grande burrito is about the size of a small baby.
I recommend the steak burrito with extra cheese and a side of guac.
Bueno's has - bar none - the best guac I've ever encountered.
A good game to try when you go there - order a burrito with a friend and see who can eat while creating the least mess, it's a challenge but you'll get it, just practice.
They've always got this cool Latin music in there, which is dangerous, because after repeated Bueno sessions, said music may induce a Pavlovian response and result in unseemly salivation.
Even the bathroom is fun. The walls are chalkboard so you can graffiti to your heart's content without actually committing vandalism.

The DEFINITIVE burrito destination in Amherst. The classic fillings are unbelievably fresh, and they're always adding more new treats (like pulled pork... Mmmmm.). Fat Tuesday deal is worth a special trip, the burrito size upgrades from "small dog" to "that's like carrying a baby."

And if you don't feel like stuffing your face, there's delicious quesadillas, stuffed peppers, and a wealthy array of veggie options (it is western mass, lots of veggiers around). I will never have a better burrito than the BBQ chicken with guac. Do yourself a favor and pay this place a visit.

P.S. Comparisons to La Veracruzana (because I take my burritos seriously, man) are less than lackluster. Bueno has marginally fresher ingredients, faster service, and more selection than La Veracruzana without the snobby hipster vibe - and nobody likes an arrogant burrito.

Bueno Y Sano (Good and Healthy) is a really good burrito place. Really, really really good. The burritos are huge, tasty, and come in many varieties. I love the seitan burrito the very best. I love their giant quesadillas, which I usually get with chicken. The spinach and cheese quesadillas are a little stringy and hard to chew. Their beef soft tacos are delicious. I was so happy when they opened another location in Northampton, because I made a *lot* of trips to Amherst just for a Bueno Y Sano burrito.

Delivery Express will, I believe, bring you Bueno Y Sano to your very own home.

Dirt cheap, excellent burritos, and relatively fast service. Typically I have a regular burrito with lots of veggies like mushrooms, peppers, and roasted garlic (mm!!). You seriously cannot go wrong if you like Mexican food. And honestly I can't understand why someone wouldn't like it!

One more thing: the other day I had a fish taco at Bueno y Sano and it was revelatory. Sounds too good to be true? I thought so, too. It's pretty simple to put some beans, rice, and extras into a burrito, but the fish fillet was lightly fried, well-seasoned, and cooked just until flaky. Even the soft taco shell had texture and flavor.

Oh, and don't forget to use the hottest hot sauce they have, if you can handle it, that is. Too much and you ruin the flavors of the other ingredients. But just a touch and you're in heaven.

Try it and you won't be sorry. And if you're a poor college kid like me, your wallet won't be either.

Bueno y Sano is a Mexican spot where you can get your typical burrito, quesadilla, tacos and chips with dip. Nothing is really special about the place, but it's good to know that they won't give you any stomach aches or rob your wallet.

A chicken burrito with some added toppings will put you at about $7.00; a basic burrito with rice beans and some veggies starts off at $5.50 and you pay for each additional filling starting at $1.25 and up.

Their guacamole is FRESH, which is one off the reasons why I like this place.

They also put out water for easy access and you can serve yourself.

PLUS: Plastic and metal utensils at your hearts desire!

When I look back on my college years, this is one of the places that stands out.  Sure, Burrito places have become the new Mickey D's with Chipotle, Qdoba, and the hundreds of other smaller chains.  But nothing compares to Bueno...

I haven't quite pinpointed exactly why it's different than the rest.  It's been so long since I have been able to have one that I often wonder if I'm just building the place up in my head...

Still, I would do anything to hop a plane and end up in Amherst, walk down that little alley, and order me a nice simple Bueno y Sano Burrito....

Along with Anna's Taqueria (which I believe is only in/near Boston), this is my favorite fast Mexican place in Massachusetts. "Bueno y Sano" translates to "Good and Healthy". I don't know if it's actually very healthy, but I used that as justification to go here whenever I didn't feel like cooking while I was at UMass.

Pretty much every time I go here, I get the BBQ chicken burrito. I don't know what type of BBQ sauce they're using (homemade maybe?), but it makes the burrito taste amazing, and very unique (I've never found a place that can duplicate it). Overall, I like Anna's steak burrito more than Bueno's steak burrito, but Anna's has nothing like the BBQ chicken burrito, and until they do, Bueno will always hold that winning card.

Bueno y Sano also has really good salsa. I'm pretty sure they make it from scratch, because the vegetables don't look processed, and it's very different from the salsa you get in supermarkets.

The place itself has a good atmosphere. I wouldn't bring someone on a date here or anything, but it's a nice place to sit after class when you're hungry. For some reason, they have a big disco ball hanging from the middle of the ceiling. Weird, but cool.

Not even close to authentically Mexican, or even authentically Californian Mexican,  Bueno y Sano (good and healthy) is pretty good for what it is - healthy-ish white-folks style "burritos" in a New England college town.

My biggest complaint is that the menu is so a la carte, a basic burrito seems cheap, but when you want to add meat and a veggie, all of a sudden you have a $8 burrito.  That aint right.

My favorite strategy there is to order a burrito with black beans, sour cream, medium hot sauce, and sauteed spinach and garlic SIN LECHUGA (no lettuce).  Why the hell they add lettuce to the burritos is beyond me, it's terrible, and especially when it mixes with the spinach.  When I forget to ask them to leave it out, I kick myself and hate this place.

Less authentic than the competition (La Veracruzana, basically) but still pretty much the best burrito I've had in the Pioneer Valley.

Which is a dubious honor, akin perhaps to the best sushi in Wyoming, or something like that.  You know what they (the less PC than me people) say about the Special Olympics -  "Even when you win, you're still retarded."?

That's kinda how I feel about Bueno.

    Still, I'll be back.

This place is an Amherst classic, and I've been going there for over a decade.  It's cheap, it's tasty, and it's filling.  When I first started going there, I especially liked how their menu had many choices for vegetarians; you didn't feel like you had to order 'the vegetarian dish'.  Their seitan burritos are still my favorite.

Now, just a note: this place isn't even remotely 'authentic Mexican'.  I don't think there any corn-flour-anything on the menu except tortilla chips.  But that's OK by me, because their food is fresh, flavorful, and as spicy as you want it.

Cheap and delicious might be a better name than "Good and Healthy".  I don't know what type of BBQ sauce they put in their burritos but it is pure deliciousness.  Very reasonably priced as well.  I simply can not agree with the poster below who said that this was a run of the mill burrito joint that you could find on any corner in Boston.  The burritos at Bueno are far more creative than someplace like "Chipolte".
