Bueno Burrito is like a Hawaiian version of Chipotle which I crave so often. The prices are very reasonable, with most options around $7-8.
The girl behind the counter was very personable and sweet. The owners were there both times I have gone and made me feel very welcome.
I will absolutely be going back next time I am on the Big Isle.
p.s. Great smoothies and fresh juices. & open until 9 pm (except Sundays) which is late for Hilo (or Hawaii in general) -

Fresh, simple, and yummy. The burritos are reasonably priced and quite big. If you get just rice and beans, you will be disappointed. You have to add toppings and salsa for some good flavor.
Do yourself a favor, and get something, anything, with mole sauce, it's really quite delectable. I suggest the tofu mole tacos, even if you are a meat eater, that mole sauce rocks.
I also suggest their nachos! -

Located in downtown Hilo. Get the Bueno Verde with shredded pork. It's made in front you, the ingredients are fresh and it's sooo good. Prices are reasonable. Awesome!

I have been here twice and don't really plan to return anytime soon. Maybe if everything was closed, and I was starving, I would consider it.
I am from southern california and have grown up eating awesome mexican food. As soon as i walked into Bueno Burrito, I knew right away the type of pseudo-mexican food I could expect from it. With this in mind, i took it for what it was and went with the flow.
My first visit here was positive. I had two kalua pig tacos with all the fixins along with a side of coconut-cilantro rice. When they went to scoop the rice, I noticed that it was a bit dried out. Given that it was late afternoon, i didn't really hold it against them. The spicy salsa i picked was far from spicy and even had sweetnes in it. Although my meal was not at all impressive, overall everything was decent.
My second visit here was majorly disappointing. We were in the area and just wanted to pick up a no fuss, quick lunch. I ordered the mexican bowl which consisted of my choice of rice and meat. I figured i'd go with island flair and try it with the portuguese sausage. I quickly regretted my choice when they pulled the sausage out of the fridge, sliced and microwaved it right in front of me. For $7, i got a small styrofoam cup with a probably about half a cup of rice, 5-6 slices of sausage topped with cheese and cilantro. The microwave part was appalling. I could have spent $3 on frozen entree and microwaved it at home, and it would have tasted slightly better.
As someone else said in their review, I would rather go to taco bell for pseudo mexican food. -

Went to this place cuz everywhere else we wanted to eat is closed on Monday. I knew right away I was going to be let down.
This place serves generic food. The lady told me the put tomato and cilantro powder in their rice. POWDER?!? WTF?
The meat had a funky taste.
Kalua pig was ok, nothing to write home about.
I ordered the nachos because I knew I would be disappointed with everything else on the menu. Boyfy got a burrito. He doesn't know the first thing about good Mexican food, but at least had the common sense enough to know that this ain't it.
Nachos (generic chips) came with cheese out of a squirt bottle. The guacamole was fake and it also came out of a squirt bottle. The beans were canned. I think the only thing they probably actually made as opposed to store bought is their meat. I'm thinking that store bought would have been better.
.......Ok, I lied....I just remembered they did make their salsa and it was pretty decent. I got the hottest one they had. Not the best salsa I ever tasted, but by far the best thing I had at this place. That's still not enough for me to ever warrant coming back to this place again.
NO BUENO. -

Reading some of the reviews here, I didn't know what to expect. After sharing the burrito and nachos with some friends; we were impressed. Definitely a fresh spin on Mexican island food. Muy bueno!

I would rather go to taco bell than spend money here. This place provides healthier ingredients yes, but they are stingy on portions. Order a burrito, you get one huge tortilla with the fixings, yet, you can count the pieces of meat they add to it. Of the two times I've tried this place, each time, three or four pieces of chicken which ONLY covers one half of the burrito! At least spread the meat evenly when rolling the tortilla up! I grew up where you can find tacquerias and gas stations with tacquerias so I know my mexican food. Even Maui Tacos in the mall is way better than this place!

We loved this place! Service was great, food excellent! I wish there was one of these back home. Can't beat the price, it was less than 7 bucks a person! Definitely 2 thumbs up! Also the lady was very helpful and described everything. People said it wasn't spicy enough, but she told us how spicy it would be, and that the hottest was slightly sweet.

Their motto is "Fast Affordable Healthy" --all three are true. Try the make-your-own tacos and spice it up a bit! The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is casual and great for a quick lunch. The first review says it all!

Disappointing. Food is edible. I was disturbed to watch the woman behind the counter microwaving everyone's food in the styrofoam tray, but after a little googling apparently it's not such a hazard. Still kind of yuck though. That eight dollars was not well spent.

relatively new mexican burrito/taco restaurant that took over the subway space in downtown hilo. both my wife and i made custom burritos by choosing from a wide selection of toppings (ala subway experience where you choose your toppings as you make it down the counter). i would say more a fushion mexican restaurant where you'll find local varieties that includel kalua pork meat filling, coconut cilantro rice, medium papaya salsa to name a few. there are also specialty burritos, tacos and salads where combination of ingredients have already been selected together for you. great friendly service, will be back!

On a recent visit to Hilo I happened upon this place and was absolutely delighted. I am not a fast food person, but the food here doesn't taste like fast food -- it was delicious. The fish bowl was excellent and very healthy with lots of fresh veggies. The vegan bowl also was fabulous. I was only disappointed they were out of guacamole, but I didn't even miss it. Good and fresh and inexpensive.
