Review from Alex M.
Palo Alto, CA
I might have given this place two stars as far as ghettos are concerned, but a few things have happened here recently to drop this place down to 1. I moved here because I thought it was cool to pay as little as possible for place to sleep, but after three years, I'm moving out. I'm not sure why I didn't move out sooner.
Neighbors:
Many of the nicer neighbors are illegal aliens, but there are some crazies to watch out for. The woman next door sometimes forgets to take her meds and starts screaming and cursing. She keeps telling me she's going to kill me, and she's put a knife with an arrow in the window as a threat. She also sprayed mace in my other neighbor's face for no apparent reason.
Animals:
This neighborhood is full of dogs, and some are rots and pits. A neighbor got sued when her dog allegedly bit some visitors, but I think the case was thrown out. Another neighbor was arrested for having 42 cats and dogs in her trailer where she was running a kennel. This is not a joke - you can read about it in the paper.
Overcrowding:
No one here seems good at birth control, because there are more kids running around than you could imagine. You have to be very careful to drive slowly to avoid hitting the unsupervised urchins who run around some of them are cute, but they don't stop for cars. The guy next door has 8 people living in a space that's less than 200 square feet.
Trash:
I spend about 30 minutes a week picking up garbage that people just throw in my lot. I don't know why people can't use the garbage can. The dumpsters are always overflowing and quite nasty as well, since the owner won't pay for extras.
Noise:
There used to be a group of guys who would get high and vandalize the bathroom most weekends but I haven't seem them around in a while. I still get woken up by drunk teenagers in cars with the music blasting at 2am, which is pretty annoying. There's also a guy who wakes everyone up most weekends by running his Harley at 7am. On the plus side, if you like Mexican music, there are often late night parties with Mariachi music, especially during festivities like Cinco de Mayo.
Police:
I've seen police over here more times than I can count. Domestic violence, petty crime, animal abuse, drugs, complaints; unfortunately these things are no strangers here. The last time the cops came, the female officer got quite violent and started cursing and yelling in front of the kids, threatening to shoot people and take them to jail. I thought she was especially out of line when she pushed an old woman down and sprained her wrist for no apparent reason. I guess if you don't have money, the police don't feel like they have to respect you either. Witnessing this sort of police brutality has been my final motivation to move.
Owners:
I've tried to complain a bit to the owners, but they don't seem to take much action. When I tried to persuade the owner that the neighbor who was threatening to kill me was actually dangerous he just told me that she was harmless and said that at least she paid the rent. I'm sure it's not easy to be a slum lord, but these guys don't do basic things like prevent people from building illegally, enforce capacity limits, provide enough dumpsters, prevent people from parking in the middle of the street, or kick people who shouldn't be there out. This place needs better management.
Cost:
When I moved in I was paying about $600 for everything including utilities, but prices have been going up and recently I've had to pay as much as $830 for a month. For that price, you can get a decent studio apartment. http://sfbay.craigslis....
Anyway, living here was an interesting experiment. You might like it here if you are looking for good characters about which to write your book. You won't have me as your neighbor.
