this place is scary.
okay, so the actual rental etc was fine and guy was helpful, but this is in a *really* shady part of town. two of my girlfriends were moving apartments in berkeley and rented a truck from budget. the guy at the desk warned them that if they didn't return the truck by 7am the next morning they'd get charged an extra day, but still he really wouldn't recommend dropping it off past sundown.
well, my friends are cheap and they decided to return their truck at half past midnight. b/c they weren't fully moved in, they were going to crash with me in the city, so i drove along behind them. the thing is, i also had a tree in my car (long story) and as the girls were dropping keys in the drop box, i needed to properly position the tree in my (tiny) car so that the girls would fit too.
it was a hot summer night in oakland and i'd spent the entire day helping folks move, so i wasn't wearing very much (short shorts, skimpy tank, you get the picture). so there i was, almost naked, standing on an oakland street at 1am trying to shove a tree into the front seat of my car.
suddenly this car straight out of 'grand theft auto' pulls up: an old cutlass that can bounce, full of boys from the 'hood, blaring gangsta rap. one of the guys (who definitely had worse teeth than old dirty bastard) calls out, "hey shorty! wanna take a ride wit us?"
this shorty chucked the tree out of her car, dove into the passenger side, locked the doors, and cowered. the guys stood there in their car for about 30s bewildered by my response and then drove off. what did they expect me to do, walk up to them and go "hey you! wanna be my boo?" sorry, i'm not really down with the ebonics.
anyway, i grabbed my tree and the girls (who were completely oblivous to what just went down) and high tailed it outta there.
moral of the story. if you rent here, return your truck before sundown. i gave an extra star for the guy warning us about that....
