I wanted to comment on my experience with Budget rental trucks and the move I did last Sunday. We rented from the facility off Lankershim. When we called the day before we were told we would be given a 24' truck even though we online ordered a 16' for no extra charge. Well, Izrael, the clerk, did not honor this agreement. But that was only the beginning of the problems...

I don't know what this man entered into the computer but it took an hour (time I was paying my movers to stand there and wait for this clerk to finish, and we were the only people there so its not like I'm counting this as time we waited in line or anything!). We already pre-filled out everything online so, again, I have no idea why this man felt he needed to re-do the order....we'll other than to charge us more and give us a smaller truck than was promised. But now the part that was completely unacceptable...

During this hour, Izrael made racist comments to my movers and became hostile (and we have several witnesses of this), so we were anxious to just sign the paperwork and leave. I actually had to yell at him to stop talking to the movers and focus on his JOB! One of the movers, who was African American, was the focus of this clerk's hostile energy....he said NOTHING negative to the clerk but still Izrael was beyond rude- flat out, stomach churning, racist! We were so embarrassed that we subjected this sweet man to such a despicable monster of a human being behind the counter!

Later after the move, we inspected the truck, filled it up w gas when we dropped it off....there was no damage upon its return. THEN I see an additional charge for $50 to my card....from Colorado?? What are you people doing with my credit card? We only took the truck to Playa Del Rey less than 20 miles from the pick up facility. I looked over my contract several times and found NO justification for this additional charge WHATSOEVER. I'm sure it was the genius work of that racist clerk, who was looking for every possible way to squeeze another dime out of us for an hour!

We told their corporate customer service we would like a formal apology issued regarding the racist behavior of their clerk Izrael, sensitivity training for this man should be required before they allow him to work again. We also felt he or Budget should issue us a $30 reimbursement for the hour we had to wait and was charged for by my movers/workers.

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE- unless you like inefficient liars who only want to rip you off and start fights with people....and god help you if anyone in your party is African American!

If you want to rent a 16 foot moving truck, do not bother with this Budget rental as you will pull your hair out. Why?

    1. They have a very geriatric senior running the front desk who is probably the rudest Eastern European transplant I've encountered in ages. The guy has absolutely no people skills. Just a jerk

    2. After doing what seemed like 45 min of watching an old man thumb key a reservation into the system like a trained monkey, he leads me outside only to about face and abandon me with no instruction.

    3. Then I get a honk from all the way across the lot. Some other douche-bag is hand waving me over (or so I think, as he's that far away) and  starts working his gruffly-empowered auto-inspector machismo act. Really, he spoke to me like like as if I were taking instructions on a chain gang. That was it. I ripped into him, the place. I was never so close to kicking someones ass in my whole life.

Stay away from this place. They are the RUDEST people.
    So much for customer service.

I rented a 16' foot truck for $23 per day (down from $39 thanks to a coupon) plus $15 per day for the dolly for two days. The computer reservation system  said that with deposit I had to put down $150 on my credit card. If you figure they charge $0.60 a mile and I'm going to drive 30 miles it makes sense that the total fee would be about $90 bucks, so with a deposit $150 seemed about right.

Oh, how things when when I showed up to pick up the truck. first of all, it took a total of 55 minutes from the moment I arrived until the time I left with my truck. This delay was due to a geriatric clerk named Alex with a bad attitude, poor English skills, and the ability to type one key at a time with his right thumb only.

When it was finally my turn he told me that I'd need insurance. I told him that no, I don't need it. This is due to the fact that I have a special rider on my insurance that covers class A RVs and other large trucks. I told him that I was indeed already covered. Then, I entered an alternate dimension where Monty Python is reality.

    "You need insurance"
    "No, I'm covered"
    "No, you're not"
"Yes I am. I have a special rider"
"No you don't. Your rider doesn't cover trucks over 3 tons"
    "Yes it does."
    "No, it doesn't"
    "So, you're a mind reader?"
    "No. I just know."

After he called me a liar, I agreed to get a $500 deductible coverage for $18 per day. So, somehow, the $150 deposit on my credit card was $280.

Showing him my online reservation print out, "See, it's $150"
    "No. Now you added insurance"
"Yes, I added $18 dollars a day, for a total of $36, not  an additional $130"
"Look, I tell you. Insurance change $150 to $280, why you not understand?"
At this point I noticed a mob of people behind me who had been waiting a long time and I could feel their eyes burning my neck. I just decided to pay and get my butt out of there.

When I returned two days later, Jose was there. I asked about "Alex" and Jose was pretty disappointed in his performance as Alex reported to Jose.

The good part was that the truck was easy to drive and worked great. Jose did a great job. Besides the crappy service on pick-up, the truck did have an ABS warning light on the whole time I was driving it.

One more thing to be cautious about. I used about three gallons of fuel. I had run out of time so I returned the truck short those three gallons. They charged me FIFTY BUCKS for three gallons of gasoline. Yikes! By the time the whole thing was finished, having that truck for two days cost me $206. So much for $23 a day, huh?

Good luck with your move : )
