Buddy's has been voted best Pizza in Detroit over and over again. But who can argue? Buddy's has some of the best Pizza I have ever had. The Pizza just can't be beat. The Delicious squares of Pizza are just the right size to where you can get full with just a couple pieces. Depending on how much you eat. You'll want more though. I would recommend getting more Pizza than you need so you can take some of that goodness home.
The crust is cooked to perfection and they give you lots of cheese and toppings. I also like how they have about half the sauce at the top of the pizza. Trust me this is the best Pizza you can get in the area. I enjoyed the Antipasto Salad as well.
I would like to say Thank You to all the staff at buddy's as well. We were in a little bit of a hurry when we ate here a few days ago. We told our Waitress and we were in and out in less than 30 Minutes and we didn't rush or anything. We ordered our Food and Drinks at the same time. The Drinks were out in the next 2-3 Minutes, the salad a minute or two later and within 10 Minutes after we sat down the Pizza was at the table. Even though they were busy we were seated immediately. If you find yourself in Downtown Dearborn and want excellent Pizza Buddy's is the place to go.Listed in: Local Chains, Pizza

I'm kinda bummed I didn't try Buddy's sooner. I'm a "light sauce" pizza kinda gal and always felt their style of pizza would turn me off. Wrong. Even though the sauce is on top of the pizza, it's just perfect!
There's not much about Buddy's I can report that hasn't already been said... The square pizza is full of flavor, their pillowy breadsticks are delicious and I'm in love with their crispy mac and cheese.
The service has been good in my several visits. I'm quickly becoming a regular at this place.
(Keep an eye out in your 2012 Entertainment books because there are some great Buddy's coupons in there!)Listed in: Dining in Dearborn

Growing up down the street, I was spoiled with Buddy's. My friends and I hung out here consistently in high school and I took the food for granted. After moving away, I've eaten lots of other pizza, but Buddy's is still the best I've ever had (though Fellini's in Atlanta is very close!). It's unlike "normal" pizza because it has a thick crust and it's square...but it's not quite Chicago-style either. It's Detroit-Style: Thick crispy crust and the toppings are baked underneath the cheese with the sauce is on top. I like the Greek, but I also just like plain cheese. Look out for the freebies you can add like basil and the Buddy Spice Blend.
Other must-order items include Buddy's Bread (with ranch) and broccoli soup. I used love Olga's for the broccoli soup, but decidedly never need to go there again, because Buddy's is better!
Good shout, Mark S. with the free Dum-Dums on the way out! -
Review from Mark S.
Buddy's is easily in the top 5 for best pizza that I've had, and definitely the best pizza in Michigan. It's kind of like pizza hut pan pizza, but more awesome. The crust is crunchy and delicious, the cheese is chewy, and the sauce is sometimes the star. It's more tomato-y than most pizza sauces, which tastes more handmade.
The Buddy bread is also delicious, basically just strips of baked pizza dough with garlic and parmesan. They come with sauce and ranch, which is a beautiful combination.
It can get really busy at times and obviously it's a pizza place so loud kids are everywhere. But the pizza is worth it. Grab a dum dum on the way out as well. -

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but yuk. I can't stand their pizza, my husband loves it so I am occasionally forced to partake and I am always displeased. Their pizza is swimming in grease and so is about everything else on their menu. I wouldn't mind this fat carnival if it was one of the best things I've ever eaten, but no, it's not even close. Let me off of this ride.

Beer is expensive when not on special. Pizza is good. Service is generally prompt. I always seem to sit in the same area next to different annoying people though...

I think about their pizza all of the time. So good. Their square Greek pizza is amazing. We usually split a small salad (more than enough for two), their famous "Buddy Bread" and and 8-slice square pizza so we have a few pieces to take home.
The only downside is that the place gets packed in the evenings and their waiting area is really small. Worth the wait, though! -

I'm coming home for Thanksgiving and instead of turkey and stuffing, I want Buddy's pizza and cream of broccoli soup. I hope they're open.
The pizza and soup in Chicago - sucks!
"Detroit" got 3 or 4 mentions in GQ magazines TOP 10 pizzas across America. I know Buddy's was mentioned. Chicago got - 1 - mention and it was this place in some snooty wannabe neighborhood and they're known to be arrogant and make you wait (Great Lake pizza 60640 - a whopping 3.5 stars out of 235 reviews - cat out the bag). The GQ magazine article mentioned Detroit has "the bread/dough thing down pat". Chicago's "deep dish" pizza crust is either Bisquick or some cornmeal type thing. It's disgusting. A New Yorker even mentioned the Bisquick sham. Don't believe the hype. But if you can't wait at Great Lake, highly hyped Calo is right around the corner with Mr. Manhattan and myself waiting to critique. The place is clean, for Chicago, though.
My grandmother (born in 1899) introduced us to Buddy's via the original location on Conant. I've been there. A Chicago friend visiting described Buddy's pizza as "wierd". I told him the FUBU swim trunks he got for $2 at the local Chicago hipster wannabe flea market were "wierd" too (and he was pinker than an unbaked pepperoni).
P.S. Chicago is known for their hot dogs (yay!). Rosie O'Donnell just moved into one of the "fancier" Chicago "neighborhoods" where there is a "Detroit Style" coney island restaurant on Southport. 'Nuff said right there. Also, I'm not the type to gossip or anything, but they sell Sanders hot fudge in the Water Tower Mall on the "Magnificent Mile" here (ahem, Michigan Avenue). That place draws visitors from across the globe. Detroit needs a real marketing team. I can be the spokesman. -
Review from Chris O.
Liked it. Neat location, outdoor seating, good salad, good pizza, good service. Was easy to get a tasty personal pizza with the exact toppings I wanted (pepperoni, olive, sausage, yellow pepper). Will go back next time I'm in town.
The hot fudge on the sundae seems like a mix of hot fudge and caramel, which I liked. -

7/2011 - Was up in Dearborn, and this place is close to the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village
OK, I love pizza, and growing up in Chicago has crafted my opinion on this great topic, but I am a pizza snob and I do love different types of pizza too, although my 3 year tour of duty in Dallas was an adventure from a pizza perspective....
I have had square pan pizza before, just not at too many places. Buddy's serves the pizza from a square pan which has 4 square pieces inside. You can get them with normal/traditional ingredients. I never had Detroit Pizza before, but it was quite good. The difference is that the tomato based pizza sauce is really, very very sweet! Not sure what the sugar content was, but it was really sweet - and quite good. If I am back in Motown, I am definitely coming back here. Oh, they have other items on the menu here too, those look good from afar too, but we had to have the sweet square pizza of Detroit, which is pretty interesting considering that just down the street, a guy named Henry Ford made the 1st automobile assembly line using Round tires...... -

Very cute restaurant, and super fast service.
I would love to give it 5 stars, but I found the pizza to be WAY too greasy! Appetizers were great though. The cheese sticks are awesome! -
Review from Mel B.
i'm more of a fan of the round pizza but if someone mentions they want to go to Buddy's i'm game. the pizza is always good....do i think it's the best in Detroit?? No
the service is great, atmosphere is fun, it's a fabulous place for groups. I don't feel like they put enough pepperonis on a pepperoni pizza:( -

My family and I have been going to Buddy's ever since I can remember. Everything on their menu is excellent and we are NEVER disappointed. Dearborn is famous thanks to Buddy's and the delectable mouth-watering pizza they perfect! Their crust is the best part of the pizza and is cooked with precision every time; no piece is better than another. I am a big fan of the Marghertia pizza (asiago cheese, diced tomatoes, oregano, and basil). If you aren't in the mood for pizza, they offer a variety of salads, sandwiches, Italian staples (like spaghetti and lasagna), and hamburgers. Buddy's also has the world's greatest ranch dressing. Random I know, but it is to die for and tastes good with almost anything there! Numerous Detroit collectables and sports memorabilia adorn the walls, which provide guests something to converse about before their meals arrive. Buddy's is the perfect place for parties or large groups of people since a side room is available. Ask any local from Dearborn and they will automatically tell you Buddy's is the place to go for a meal. If you plan on going for dinner, you should arrive early because the restaurant fills up extremely fast. Enjoy!!

We ordered the Supreme and the Detroiter. The Supreme was loaded with toppings. The Detroiter was very good- but not enough sauce on some parts of the pizza - at times it felt like I was just eating a bread stick. I guess that is okay because the pizza crust has a good taste to it. Both pizzas were very good, however.
Very family friendly restaraunt.
Not too many parking spaces, so I might go to the Livonia location next time. Had to pay for parking and they don't validate. The waitress honored two $4 off coupons we had from the Henry Ford Village. That was a plus. Great customer service. -

I have loved it since going in grade school with my best friends family to the original Buddy's in Detroit.
This one's ambiance feels like a chain which scares me a bit but the pizza! Oh the Pizza
HOT, saucy, cheesy puffy squares of heaven! -

The Best Pizza in Metro Detroit......
Buddy's Pizza has been making awesome pizza pies in and around Detroit now for over 61 delicious years. I was in town visiting with family and we decided to visit for dinner.
The Dearborn storeis located in the downtown business area off of Michigan Ave. It was festivley decorated with all the holiday trimmings to get everyone in the spirit.
It was a Monday night and our group of eight was promptly seated. The youngsters/monsters were given clean booster seats and of course crayons and paper to draw with. You know how restless kids can get. Our server was fantastic. She took our drink orders and came back for the appetizers. We decided to go with Antipasto Salad and a couple of orders of Buddy's Bread to start. The Buddy's Bread is more like a loaf and baked hot & fresh and comes with both Ranch and Tomatoe dipping sauces. The antipasto salad comes out in a large round metal bowl and is the standard fare except the cheese and meat is in small square pieces.
For the main course, of course, we went with a Hawaiian (Ham & Pinapple) and the Detroit (Pepperoni and Asaigo) pizza. You might not find the Detroit pizza on the menu since they just recently updated their menu inserts so be sure to ask for it. Both pizza are square deep dish and cooked perfectly.
The prices were about average for a night out. The kids enjoyed a free dumdum lolipop on the way out. Ok I did too!
If you are in the area and craving great pizza, terrific service and prices then definitely check out Buddy's! -
Review from Sarah R.
Buddy's is a small chain with just half a dozen locations in Detroit and Detroit Metro. The one in Dearborn has a nice atmosphere. The outside is bright and eye-catching, and there's a shady patio for outdoor seating, though most diners were seeking the air conditioning inside on the hot summer day I visited for lunch.
Inside, murals of the Detroit Tigers and other sports teams are painted on the walls, and sports are playing on a few TVs throughout. Buddy's has a nice bar with stools and a decent selection of beers and wines. The specialty of the house is pizza, but they also offer burgers, pasta, and wings.
The lunch special is quite reasonable, and is served quickly enough to accommodate someone with just 30 minutes for her lunch break. You get a half order of one of a few different pasta selections, their "Buddy Bread," and soup or salad. It's really filling for $6.49. The Buddy Bread is puffy and soft, hot from the oven, drizzled with butter and sprinkled with Parmesan. The salad was unremarkable but fresh and crisp and pretty large for a side salad. The half order I had of mostaccioli was pretty generous, about the same size as a full order at other restaurants.
Buddy's would be a good choice for a large group. When I visited, there were at least two long tables accommodating parties of eight or more. One table was seating about 12 people who appeared to be celebrating a birthday. -

When I used to travel to Dearborn for work from Dallas, i used to love sitting in the outdoors area.
Being born and raised in Detroit and then having to move, i can certainly tell you all how lucky you are to have pizza like this. Detroit style rules.
I have to give a special call out to the Antipasto Salad. I have lived in CA, MN, FL, CO and TX and nowhere can you get an excellent lunch meat salad with this dressing. Nowhere I tells ya.
Detroiters - enjoy what you have! -
Review from Seoung L.
Is there a Detroit style Pizza? I might say that Buddy's could be considered Detroit Style. It's not like Chicago and not like NYC. It's somewhat unique and I haven't experienced this style anywhere else.
It's a deep dish square pizza that is not really thick and not super thin. The crust and dough has a good buttery flavor and very delicious. My favorite pizza is their Florine Mark which is fat free cheese, spinach, mushrooms, diced tomatoes, garlic, and black olives. Now you're thinking "how could fat free cheese be any good?" Well surprisingly Buddy's fat free cheese is really good. Of course not good as real cheese but this pizza with the toppings really is tasty and low in fat!
I have tried basically all types of their pizzas here and they are all really good.
I recommend their Buddy Bread with sauce! It's addictive to eat those little soft buttery rolls! Another popular item here is their Antipasto Salad. Let's just call this "Cheese & Salami Salad since it's covered in blocks of cheese and salami. There isn't that much lettuce to this. People love it. I admit, I do too! I usually get it with ranch to make it more fatty. Maybe this is why I get the fat free cheese pizza to balance it out? I dunno but I guess I feel less guilty about it. :)
I always have great service here and they even have an outdoor patio which is great for downtown Dearborn.
Pizza Papalis is down the street and you might have to choose between the two. I would recommend Buddy's over Pizza Papalis 9 out of 10 times.Listed in: Best tasting Pizzas in Metro…

It's been a great while; but if you are in Detroit; a pizza pit stop should be made here & if you wanna do it right; start with the Buddy Bread!!
The Pizza is made from scratch daily; Wisconsin cheese; from what I could recall it's more of a Chicago style pizza; squared..
The sauce is light (in taste); loaded with flavour..
Ask for extra napkins; this one is a chin dripper! -

Buddy's pizza is delish, despite my friend's 6 yo nephew being "afraid of square pizza."
Salad was yummy too with a good ratio of meat to cheese. -

Good to great pizza. Nice, fun, casual place to have lunch or a birthday party or going away lunch. If you have 10 or more people, the "all you can eat" large party deal is the way to go...one flat price per person and they will bring out different pizzas as well as salads, etc. I personally like the Detroiter, the Hawaiian, and the Coney pizzas. I've had their sandwiches before...definitely not their strong suit but still OK. The pizza is much better.
Staff has always been friendly. Be careful, if there are a couple large parties in the restaurant the kitchen will get backlogged and it will take a long time to get your pizzas. Best thing to do is get your pizza orders in early...better to have them sitting on the table getting cold than have a bunch of hungry, antsy people sitting at an empty table wondering where the heck the pizzas are.
Not much else to say...it is Buddy's. To people who live in Detroit, unless you're going to the original Buddy's location the other locations are pretty much chains and expectations should be adjusted accordingly. -

We stopped in again and had another great dinner. I love Detroit style pizza and Buddies may be the source of my growing addiction. This time we bought a bottle of their wonderful vinaigrette salad dressing to take home with us. We had another top-notch server, Kim. I had to give up the coveted 5th star since Buddies not only has consistently good food at very reasonable prices, but they also have very good servers to boot. This is the complete package.

Damn good pizza. I think the square pieces made it easy to eat and I liked that there wasn't an ass ton of tomato sauce on my pizza.

You really can't go wrong with Buddys Pizza..although i prefer the original location on Conant in the D, this location is ok. The margaritas were the best for 6.25..a Saturday special. Had a 8-square pizza with my fav..pep..it sau..& salami. Its a detroit tradition so lets support them.

The pizza here is great, i was recommended Buddy's by some guy in the Biergarten one night.. he said
"hey mayne, u tried NY pizza, you tried chicago pizza but that aint nothing compared to Detroit pizza"
and i guess he was right, the pizza's awesome, the sides are great.
I ordered a beer, waitress 10 min later noticed that it wasn't filled to the top so she gave another pint on the house..! I didn't even have to say anything..
So that makes the service top too!
If you Dearborn then this place is a must for pizza fans.. -

Went back here this past Sunday after a massive road trip to Birch Run and X-Mas utopia land. The chicken tortilla soup here was AWESOME! They should bottle and sell it by the truck load. I'm from Chicago but I've got a huge secret, I HATE DEEP DISH! The pizza here is more 'pan style' the crust is really something special and they have an impressive amount of toppings to choose from. You should definitely pay a visit and tip well (did I mention my Shorty works here, lol)

For years, we've been devotees of Buddy's takeout. Their pizzas were wonderful. That has changed. We ordered two pizzas last night, both with pepperoni and green bell peppers, and one with black olives. They put on broccoli in place of black olives, and we had to search high and low to find any evidence of pepperoni or peppers on either one. This place has gone downhill fast.

Fabulous pizza, and a great variety of unusual toppings. Their Buddy Bread is insane! You won't be able to stop eating it. Believe it or not, I almost always order the mac and cheese--used to be too much to eat and I ended up taking it home--now they have 1/2 portion, which I still take home. Incredible value--this and the other pastas come with salad and bread, too. Freshly made salad dressings, too--the creamy garlic is my personal favorite. Busy, busy, busy, but they move things along so you won't have to wait too long. Service is professional--most of the wait staff have been there as long as I can remember, so please remember to tip your wait staff properly. Good beer and drink specials all week long. Hubby loves the antipasto and getting his pasta with baked cheese on top. They actually serve your pasta in crocks which have been oven-baked--yummy! I do miss the great onion rings they used to have here, too, but there are other appetizer choices. For us veggies, they recently added veggie burgers to their menu; not too bad, so this is yet another option.
Take your appetite and if you go home hungry, shame on you! -
Review from Albie F.
This Super specialty "Detroit Style Pizza" made a solid delivery being served in square slices. Wasn't greasy at all and the crust was cooked perfect (not razor thin and not overly soft). I would try some other pasta than the underperforming spaghetti pasta dish but the greek salad was a fabulous pairing with the pizza. I did a take out order so didn't get to see the inside of the restaurant but outside on an August Friday night, there was music playing outside and a nice sized crowd of people just enjoying the Dearborn evening. It would have been nice to join in on the festivities and eat some Buddy's pizza but family obligations had me running back home.

I really like the pizza here and sometimes just have to go get a 4 square Sicilian deep dish for lunch with friends from work. It ain't Chicago style, it's just THICK. The Sicilian comes topped with cheese, pepperoni, green peppers, black olives, salami, diced tomato and a very fresh tasting crushed tomato/basil sauce. I used to try and eat healthier here and often ordered the Honey Dijon (grilled) Chicken sandwich. It was good, with a very tender full chicken breast, but once I had the Sicilian it's been pretty much all I eat there. Their breadsticks are deliciously soft and buttery as well. Service is usually prompt and polite and they have plenty of seating for large parties. Outdoor dining is also an option with a beautiful view of one of the WORST maintained roads in the country, Michigan Avenue Dearborn. It's fun to watch random cars drive into and out of the gigantic potholes leaving bits and pieces of metal from their oft-abused undercarriages. But I could get hit in the forehead with a stray hubcap and still wouldn't be distracted from my pizza.
