    I love Buddy's.

Been going there since I was a kid.  Got $1 pizza if Pistons scored 100 points back in the 80s.  The place hasn't changed.

Great service and really good pizza.  I like the divey feel of the place, and police, and firepeople eat here all the time.

    Great for families

Had a great time here.  Played Bocci ball outside which is gated - this was my first try at Bocci Ball and had a lot of fun.  The restaurant itself has different levels - just a couple of steps down.  Buddy's basically has not changed too much as far as the decor goes in about 20 or so years.  But, the pizza is still amazing, I don't know if they were able to keep the same chef there all these years or what, but it was just awesome.

They have a new pizza, and I believe it is only offered on Mondays and Tuesdays - could be wrong though, it is called Bad Ass Pizza and then you can pair it up with Bad Ass Beer.  Thank you Kid Rock!  The pizza was scrumptuous -- perfectly put together and the crust was crunchy, just enough sauce and other topppings to melt in your mouth!  If you like pepperoni on your pizza it was like they toasted each and every piece on top, but I know that they didn't do this individually, so the ovens must also be amazing.

Awesome place, brings back a whole lot of memories from the 70's.  The staff are great, the parking is in a lot that has attendants to watch over the cars - in case you are reluctant to go past 8 Mile Road - talking about 8 Mile, maybe Eminem will visit one day!  Since this is the original Buddys it is the best!!!!  Try it again.

Twenty years ago I would have given this place 5 stars easy for the pizza alone.  I haven't been here in awhile (why would I?  There are several Buddy's closer to me also a Cloverleaf right here in Eastpointe.)   Anyways, I thought I would go to the source and try to impress my fiance with the best version of Buddy's possible.  Not.

Don't order "The Detroiter" version of the Buddy's pizza.  The pepperoni's are on top, the sauce is supposed to be spicy but it's way too chunky and not nearly enough is put on.  The shaved Parmesan they put on is yellow and has a funky cheap taste to it.   Anyone coming into town to try Detroit style pizza is going to try this and be disappointed.

The execution of our pizza was lame too.  The cheese was uneven and sparse, and most of the sides except the corners were devoid of much of the crispy browned buttery cheese.  What's up with that?  Did the master pizza makers die while I've been gone?

The beer selection is kind of weak by today's standards.

The good:  The waitress was cheerful, the antipasto tasted magnificent, especially the salami.

    3.5 Stars

PS- They need to bring back the little pepperoni's.   Buddy's & Cloverleaf used to have these thick, small pepperoni's that were awesome.  Sometime 20 years ago they stopped putting them on.

Buddy's, like many things in Detroit, doesn't look like much from the outside and that is part of it's charm, I suppose. Inside, it is a combination bar/pizza place. They display outside that it was one of the best pizzas in the country, according to Food Network, back in 2003. So, I was expecting one HELL of a pizza.

Ordered my dessert first, a Jack and coke. Other than the fact they stuck a lime on the glass, it was good. It is always nice when you find anywhere that still makes a stiff drink.

now, the pizza....It was not bad. I enjoyed it. But, best pizza in the country? Not by a long shot. Granted, that was 8 years ago. A lot of things can happen between now and then. Again, I liked the pizza. It was tasty. But, it wasn't anything special. It was basically a really good Little Caesars pizza (a rectangle with no real crust but a crispy edge).

We had a good time there. The wait staff were great and helpful. I would certainly return to Buddy's again for dinner. I would just have lower expectations.

I've been going to the Original Buddy's since I was little. Now that I live in Arizona, I HAVE to have my Buddy's when I go home! Yes, there are other branches around the metro area, but nothing beats the original. Maybe its the decades old pizza oven or the commitment to the original recipe. Dunno. But I can certainly tell a difference every time I stray from the Conant location.

If you're visiting Detroit, Buddy's is an icon. You have to check it out.

Buddy's at Six and Conant. Yum. Don't bother w/ the other locations, they stink.
You can't go wrong w/ a pizza, antipasto salad and pitcher of beer.
I haven't been in quite some time and we decided to go for lunch today. I remember the crust as being much heavier and greasy...OMG, it was light and airy with a perfect buttery crunch. I do prefer a bit more spice to the sauce but it was definitely good. The antipasto was so fresh and tasty, overflowing w/ cheese, salami and ham. The dressing is just about perfect.
Our server, Janice was the best! She's been serving Detroiters at that location for over 20 years!!
Don't fear the locale. The parking lot is fenced and guarded.
Do be careful in the parking lot, it has lots of potholes...I twisted my ankle and fell right on my clumsy, old ass!!

Buddy's Pizza is dense, crunchy, and chock full of sauce, cheese and toppings. The crust is phenomenal. Its burnt, crispy edges are the best parts, making the four-square (all corners) an excellent choice. The Detroiter (pepperoni, basil, cheese and sauce) is my favorite--nothing fancy, just damn good pizza.

Don't bother with any of the suburban locations, because this is the one where you can toss some bocce balls around while you digest your food! The bar is sweet. The service is great. Prices are reasonable. Some of the appetizers (like bacon and cheese smothered fries) are pretty darn tasty. I'm not all that keen on the salads, but the pizza alone is worth five stars.

Back in May 2009, I read in that month's GQ Alan Richman's reviews of America's top twenty-five pizzerias, and fixed my eye upon #15, Buddy's in Detroit. Forward to January 2010 and I'm 313-bound, my main mission a Buddy's eight-square.

A cursory scouting of the adjacent neighborhood via Google Street View alarms my risk-averse girlfriend, prompting her to suggest one of Buddy's suburban locations.

"No," I say, "we have to visit the *original* Buddy's." The area, I assure her, isn't as bad as it looks. Detroit's just like that. They deal with it. And the parking lot offers a guard after 6 p.m.

Soon as we enter we understand we're someplace special, oozing as it does with non-ironic nostalgia, and warm, dim lighting.

"Smoking or non?" asks our hostess, adding to the anachronistic effect. Hooray for freedom--even though I don't smoke. (My girlfriend does.)

Locals crowd the bar watching the NFL Pro Bowl while engaging in mirthful conversation. Even across the room we feel like we're part of the fun.

Our waitress is a friendly Caucasian woman from nearby Hamtramck who recommends The Detroiter--pepperoni with basil sauce--with "the GQ" four-cheese blend, washed down with a 60oz. pitcher of Michelob (only $9.75).

About 20 minutes later a pie arrives in a square pan. It's The GQ, not The Detroiter. Ooops. "It's our mistake," we're told. "This one's on the house. Try to save some room for The Detroiter--we'll get that in the oven right away."

The crust is as light and flaky as my mouth has ever known, ever-so-slightly burned at the edges. The sauce deliciously tangy, the cheese tastily oozy. The combined taste was worth driving hundreds of miles to experience.

We had four of the eight squares to save room for The Detroiter, which proved to be even better. Thirty-two dollars later, including tip, we leave with pizza-and-beer loaded bellies and eight squares of leftovers that I couldn't wait to eat the next day.

If your a deep dish pizza fan, than this is the place for you! I'm not! Would rather have a thin crust and yummy sauce, than all that dough! But, if I have to eat their, I will have a corner piece of pizza! The corner, is buttery and overall the best part of the pizza! Several people love this, it is always full and always has a waiting line. So, it seem's the deep dish, detroit fan's, give it a 5 star review! Guess, you will have to make your own mind up, about this place!

I agree with Colette that Buddy's is a fun spot if you're with a group.  I'd had Buddy's before, but never been to this initial location, and never realized they had bocci.  Note for next time:  bring someone who actually plays bocci ball, regularly! Still, it was fun to watch folks duke it out on the court, somewhat guessing at the rules.

I just met up with fellow yelpers Henry B and Joe H and a crew of other folks tonight for waaaay too much pizza (in a good way), as well as salad and pasta.

Now, the pasta wasn't anything that stood out, but really, was I there for pasta? No way! I was there for ooey-gooey cheesy saucy goodness on a crust that was nice and crisp around the edges. Indeed, that's what I got. I sampled the pepperoni (hidden under the cheese) as well as the Hawaiian, which had a big ol' pineapple ring on each slice.  That's part of the beauty of the square pizza, I guess -- use all that space with a whole ring of fruit!

The Hawaiian was sweet and tasty, while the pepperoni was just what I wanted. The salad portions were ample, and I was impressed by the amount of veggies, etc. intermingled with the lettuce.  For a salad at a pizza joint, it was a notch above average.

Our server was a sweetheart, taking good care of our group with a smile. On the way out, the whole wall was full of all of awards and kudos, while the wall opposite is painted with a great mural that seems to pay playful homage to the style of the Diego Rivera DIA murals (someone back me up here, I swear that's the intent!).

What can I say about Buddy's? We've been going there for quite a while. I'm not a huge pizza person but I have to say that, when I have consumed their pizza, I haven't been disappointed. Salads are chock full of stuff (I like the house salad with grilled chicken and blue cheese - made in-house - dressing). My favorite aspect of Buddy's is their Long Islands. Strong. Cheap on Tuesdays. Good. Not to mention the friendly service.

If you are looking for a place to take a group, may I suggest the Original Buddy's at 6 Mile & Conant. I have actually taken 2 groups there in the last 2 months and have had a GREAT TIME and wonderful experience each time.

If you are headed downtown, it is not far off I-75 and would make a perfect lunch or dinner spot. The area is admittedly a lil seedy, but not only does it have THE BEST pizza, it also has a rich and interesting history (and a guarded lot). For adults/seniors, I can bet they haven't been there in years and would love the reminiscent feel of the place. It is awesome. The staff is very helpful.

We were in our own private room (probably seats about 30-40 ppl), which just happens to be attached to an outdoor bocci court. It was fun to play while we waited for our pizza and antipasto salad to come out. If a manager is easily accessible, ask him to give the group a quick history of the restaurant (printed on the menu), but they will show you the hole they used to sneak booze in during prohibition....little known fact!!

Instead of trying to personalize an order for each individual, we ordered an antipasto for each table and several of their most popular pizzas. The only problem was deciding which pizza to try! We found that figuring 2 pieces per person was more than enough and let us have quite a variety of toppings (the Detroiter was a personal favorite...yum!).

Oh boy! I have been waiting a looooong time to try Buddy's and FINALLY did a few weeks ago! And maybe my review is slightly partial since I am a pizza FIEND to say the least and i've been eating like healthy lately and wanted to splurge, so needless to say, Buddy's scratched the itch for something naughty.

We ordered hot wings which were nice and crispy on the outside with tender meat on the inside, smothered in a tart and spicy hot wings sauce,  with some celery and blue cheese to cool off with. The 4 square was the perfect amount for me and my bf to share, got the meat deluxe that had everything but the kitchen sink in it. The crust was crunchy, the toppings were plentiful, the cheese was just right, but I do think they could have used a tad more sauce b/c the pizza was a little dry. All in all it was still friggin good!

The "ambiance" was like being in the neighborhood sports bar which was nice and laid back, it's definitely a family friendly environment, it's also a replacement for chuck e cheese i think b/c there was definitely a child's birthday party taking place when we got there! LOL Why didn't I know about buddy's when I was 7??

Buddy's was worth a visit, and it was really good pizza, but I think the only deep dish I wanna drive out especially for would be Chicago deep dish. Now that's worth a real road trip!

If you want to taste the best square pizza in Michigan, the original Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria is the place you need to go to. If they didn't put the excellent sauce on top of the cheese, the interplay of the ingredients would not be what it is: uniquely delicious.

For those who wish for a little savings on their pizza, look for the coupon that they often have on the side of the large carry-out box. Also, they often promote (at the pick-up table's cork board) a discount coupon sticker card. I've even asked for one when they seemed out and the manager gave me one from the back office. (Mama always said,"If you don't ask, you don't get!") I don't think they care about coupon expiration dates either. The Metro Times has featured discount coupons as well.

Parking is well lit and guarded.

I finally believe that there isn't a Detroit Style Pizza. There is only a Buddy's Style Pizza. Our first visit here, this afternoon, was not only nostalgic of all pizza my Detroit BF ever had-- it was like discovering the long lost link of what ever brought him to love pizza so much in the first place.

Our waitress, friendly- it's wonderful to see someone who cares about the product they serve. Our antipasto salad was perfection.. with the salami and provolone in a total three-way with the vinegar, spice infused italian dressing that was, basically, drinkable. But this was only the opening act. We already knew that..

After about a dozen "looking backs" to see when this famed pizza would arrive, it finally came. The crust, even just visibly, was incredible. The sauce and toppings and cheese arranged perfectly. We both agree that the perfect selection of toppings includes: pepperoni, banana peppers (key!), onions and green peppers. Buddy's insists on burying the pepperoni's under the cheese so that they do not burn---- but, aha- some of the pep'roni edges came through and were burnt to a perfect black crisp.

It was the perfect crust. A combination of Ben's Pizza of Soho (NYC)'s Sicilian slice lightness with the buttery golden heaven (that somehow delayed the realization that I would need to go to the gym 9 times this week).

I'm really torn with the sauce. I believe Louie's of Hazel Park offers a more flavorful sauce. It was just a little too sweet for me to deem this the best pizza that I've ever had.

But looking across the table--- I realized that my Motor City born, pizza obsessed man was in heaven. That alone made this a dining experience to remember.

I will come back and reevaluate again... And no, the cold, 5 hour old slice I just ate in my hotel room does not count.

    Til our next rendezvous..

*four stars, food... one extra star for the full bar and smoking section.*

This is the restuarant that unleashed the much under-rated Detroit-Style Pizza onto the world.  With the exception of Loui's Pizza, every other derivative of Detroit style pizza (some of the Buddy's chains, Shields, Jets, Papa Romanos, Dominos, etc.) pales in comparison to the original Buddy's Pizza.

For those of you who don't live in the Detroit area and don't know about Detroit-style pizza, I would most closely ascribe it to New York Sicilian-style square pizza.  Though they are both square pizzas, they taste quite differently.  Detroit-style pizza is perhaps most famous for the cheesy, burnt crust edges which offer a taste unique to the Detroit pizza.

OMG...I love this Buddy's. From the delicious crispy yet chewy crust, to the  tangy sauce and great choice of toppings, I'm in heaven here - the only other place that even comes close is Loui's in Hazel Park.

The antipasto with the raspberry vinaigrette is to die for as well with smooth creamy chunks of cheese, plenty of meat, and fresh greens...YUM!

When I dream of pizza in the D, Buddy's (the original location ONLY) is what comes to mind.

I eat a lot of pizza. A lot.

There are several good places around Detroit -- Como, Green Lantern, Shields, and Alibi all come to mind.

Buddy's tops them all. I have been eating Buddy's for 40 years and I could still eat it every day. I never tire of it. What better compliment?

The crust is thick and crispy, the sauce is excellent.

Much better eaten in (hotter) than taken out. Detroit sports is always on.

Oh my gosh- I'm so sad I didn't get the pizza. I said I would go back, but I didn't get the chance!
Here's how it went down- I went for lunch while I was in the area with the company I was visiting. Needless to say it was our lunch break and there wasn't time for me to order pizza!! I settled for a salad, which for what it's worth- was pretty decent. I loved the waitress and the cozy atmosphere.
As a side note/question- why can't every restaurant have those sesame seed sticks?? I thought about pocketing them, but refrained.
If I'm ever in Detroit again- Buddy's will be my first stop!

Definitely one of the best pizza places I've eaten at.  This is a true Detroit gem.

I can't say much, but the pizza are stellar.  I had pepperoni, bbq chicken, cheese, and hawaiian.. they were all very good.  Though, I think more of the antipasto salad whenever I go to Buddy's because it's one of the best too!

There's numerous locations around Detroit... the original one is on 6 mile road, east of Woodward.  It is an iffy area, but bring a group of people - the servers are very nice there.  I typically go to Livonia location - good service and same great taste!

This can't be at all related to other so-called "Buddy's Pizza" in Michigan based off of one principle: Buddy's Rendezvous makes superb pizza in comparison to the chain Buddy's. I don't know what they do differently.

They advertise themselves as Detroit's Original Square (which isn't surprising. Doesn't everyone advertise that these days?) and I can see why; the decor reminds me of Loui's, in the way that it's funky and ancient looking. The fact that it's in the middle of the 'hood doesn't help. That may be why it reminds me of Loui's. But anyway.

Their sauce is amazing. What I don't like about the chain Buddy's is that their sauce is too tart. I've been to a couple of them - the one in Dearborn, Auburn Hills, and Warren - and they all seem to have this problem.

What BR has is a weighty sauce that's flavorful, not tasting like something you dip cheese sticks in at Denny's.

The Bocci ball is a trip. I'm pretty sure that BR is responsible for me buying my own Bocci set. I cant argue with that.

As Dea said, it isn't cheap pizza. I will say that though the pizza can cost a bit compared to other pizzas, I've not once walked out of BR still hungry.

Chicago transplant here, so I am going to be biased towards a place that has really good crust. It's crunchy, it's thick, it reminds me of Lou Malnati's crust (in Chicago). Quality ingredients, but pretty pricey! I guess you get what you pay for? A small 4 slice runs about $8 and the large is around $17. But the large isn't very large...

They have bocci ball on Friday nights at this Buddy's (the original).

So I finally got to try the pizza at the original Buddy's in the cozy Detroit neighborhood north of Hamtramck. I can see why Alan Richman included this diamond in the rough in GQ's Top 25 Pizzas in the USA list; it definitely did hit the spot without breaking the bank. I like the location, because we were on our way downtown, so stopping here was just 10 minutes shy of downtown off of I-75. It broke up the short drive downtown into 2 even shorter segments. The parking was very secure, as they had their own private lot, which is free of course for customers (another perk of being away from the core city). The staff got our group of 8 some nice seating even though half the restaurant was booked up for big parties.

My girlfriend and I ordered some hot wings to appetize ourselves. The wings were a little over fried/cooked and therefore were kind of harder/tougher to chew. My g/f actually prefers this, whereas I like the sauce to infiltrate the tender insides of my wing (sexual innuendo intended). I like the meat on my wings to be a little more tender & juicy. I didn't cry over this, since I knew wings aren't these guys' specialty. We got blue cheese and celery on the side. Yum! I picked off of my friend's salad, which had an ample amount of ham and cheese in it (I was impressed).

We ordered the 4-square (4 corner slices, perfect for 2 people to share) meat deluxe pizza. We had been working out every day building up to this, so we weren't gonna hold back. I'm not gonna lie - this isn't Chicago deep-dish, it's Detroit deep dish - with a square crust making 4 sharp 90-degree angles that are perfectly buttery crisp around all the edges! It's that in between style deep-dish that's real popular in Detroit. Chicago deep-dish is usually layered more and deeper, and yet a circular pie. Detroit deep-dish is about half as deep, less layered, and traditionally square with square slices. And of course it's significantly deeper than NY-style thin crust and also distinguished from basic pan-round pizza like they have at Pizza Hut. In fact, this is probably the original Detroit pizza joint that helped give birth to popular square deep dishes chains around metro-Detroit, such as Buscemi's and Jet's Pizza's famous square-pan deep dishes.

With all that being said, it was damn good, though. It was a cheesey pizza with good sauce, tasty toppings of ground beef, sausage, ham, pepperoni, and bacon. I love how they put the pepperoni under the special Wisconsin mozzarella cheese to keep it fresh and prevent it from getting charred. I love the signature sauce that goes over on top. The toppings were all cooked to perfection. This is a casual pizza, it's not gourmet, but yet something compelled me to enjoy it slower with a knife and fork. It's a Detroit tradition!

Overall, it's hometown "Detroit-style deep dish" pizza (moderately deep, square-pan) at a reasonable price and it's a casual dining experience. There's a neighborhood looking bar inside and the patrons are all from all sorts of walks of life in the metro-Detroit area. Service is good and friendly (our waitress didn't mind putting us all on separate bills and applying all our coupons to each of our bills even though we were at the same table).

In a nation where there's chain pizza, Chicago pizza, and New York Pizza; Buddy's puts the historic and often underrated Detroit pizza on the map! I would definitely love to have another meal here again sometime on my way down to the D! This is Detroit original hometown pizza joint.

Buddy's is absolutely one of my most favorite Pizza Places. When I think of pizza I think Buddy's! While it is not much on the outside, the atmostphere on the inside is cozy, and quite. It is the perfect little romantic getaway. But if your looking for friends, food, and fun? The price is right, and the food is great. The staff is courteous and friendly. They have great seating and are open late. How can you beat that! 2 Thumbs Up!

We had dinner at Buddy's on a Saturday night in 10/05.  This (original) location opened in 1946.  The neighborhood is a little dicey (although they have a parking lot guard beginning at 6:00 p.m.), the exterior looks like a factory (not exactly inviting), there's very little ambiance and our server was rather perfunctory (although the manager and another worker were very friendly) - but we had a Greek pizza and it was *terrific* (also a bargain).  Buddy's is an award-winning place (year-after-year) and it's very popular.

The origninal location is still intact the way I first visited it 40 years ago.  The pizza was great that time and the hundreds of times since.  If you don't like pizza try the mac and cheese.  Don't go to the suburban locations, go here!
