In 1996, the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida established the Buddy Walk as a forum to alert the community of this disorder and encourage those who have and their families that they are not alone. It was also a way to bring people together in a fun and productive manner. Since 2000, the event has been held at Lake Eola Park downtown, and continues to grow. In 2007, they raised almost $200,000 and had an incredible 4,000 participants.
This year's 11th anniversary was no different. Thousands of people showed up on a cool, sunny and beautiful October morning ready to walk and enjoy themselves by the Lake. Local radio stations were present along with various other vendors and tents. Scooby Doo and Shaggy along with Curious George were also there to entertain us, especially the droves of kids who were participating. There was also a Native American and Cowboy walking around on stilts. Definitely something to see! The police blocked off the main roads around the Lake and allowed the walkers to do their thing. It was neat to see the various teams dressed up in similar colors and with special costumes to show their support for this cause. You have the option of signing up on your own, or entering as a family/team.
Before the walk began, and once it was completed, many people stuck around to enjoy the festivities whether it was buying a hot dog, or listening to the live music. So from 8am to Noon that day, Lake Eola was alive with people who truly cared about all of those affected by Down Syndrome. It was a lovely sight that I'm glad to have seen.
