Ahh, dentists. I am very, very, very picky about my dentists. Like in a lunatic kind of way. I have had some pretty horrible experiences with dentists in the past and it literally took me almost two weeks to decide to make an appointment with Bucktown Dental.
To be clear, I really despise dentists that specialize in cosmetic anything. You know what a dentist should do? Clean teeth. Treat gum disease. Fill cavities. Perform root canals. Be concerned with the general health and well being of teeth, gums, etc.
You know what a dentist shouldn't do? Provide orthodontic advice (go see an orthodontist for retainers or braces). Insist that whitening treatments are important. Push expensive cosmetic treatments on patients who a) don't want them and b) couldn't care less.
I have sat in too many dental chairs and been told that I should get some kind of cosmetic treatment that I don't need. Who cares about fake white teeth? If it is not detrimental to my oral health, I don't want it. Please don't tell me that you "recommend" I get a retainer - my orthodontist would probably be offended that you're saying his two years of work didn't "take."
But... I digress. Bucktown Dental is none of these things. My experience here was the exact opposite of ones that I've had at dentists in the past. All of the staff were friendly and I was seen by a technician to start my x-rays immediately. Everyone was very talkative and made me feel very comfortable. I was treated by Dr. Daza and she did a great job cleaning my teeth. She asked me what I wanted from my visit (I'm sure some people would like orthodontic advice or have come in with some kind of massive tooth pain), but she was perfectly happy to just clean my teeth like I asked. No argument, no pressure to whiten or get fitted for Invisalign.... just a nice, healthy teeth cleaning.
I was in and out in an hour, and that included yearly x-rays and a long conversation about my job with Dr. Daza. All in all, very pleasant and I'm actually looking forward to going to my appointment in March (I know, weird... right?). The office is pleasantly decorated (even though it's partially under construction). The waiting area chairs are super cushy and comfortable and all of the decor is sleek and modern. They are really upfront about cost and insurance information, so give them your insurance info over the phone as soon as you call to make your first appointment. They were very clear about insurance and payment costs and they answered questions I had about different procedures in case anything happens in the future. Again, I'm actually looking forward to coming back. I think I finally found a dentist I can be really happy with.
Admittedly, Melissa and I are old college buddies. However, when it came to finding a dentist when I moved back to Chicago, I had to find someone I could trust. Who better to trust than a friend...and a friend that's a dentist! Dr. Daza has a great personality, and keeps her patients engaged throughout the entire appointment. Great demeanor, great space (in Wicker Park), and very trustworthy. I always recommend her to friends and colleagues looking for a dentist. And, I'm recommending her to you, Yelp reader!
I was more than bitter when I found out my dentist of the past 15 years is now out of network with my company's insurance changes this year. A good dentist is hard to find, right? One Yelp search and a few phone calls later, I landed an appointment at Bucktown Wicker Park Dental Associates with Dr. Schwartz.
First thing... the office is totally under construction. It didn't bother me in the slightest, but if you're a nervous dental patient who gets really stressed out in a construction zone, you may want to wait a few months to visit when construction is completed.
Dr. Schwartz was super-sweet and very professional. We talked about my dental history, she actually did my cleaning herself (I feel like most dentists rely heavily on hygienists) with some kind of crazy sonic, vibrating tool, polished my chompers, did some x-rays and sent me on my way.
I was in and out in about 40 minutes, including the new patient paperwork. Not bad, not bad!
I have been a patient of Dr. Falcone for about a year now. She is very nice and friendly and does a very nice job. I have gotten a cleaning, exam, and filling done by her which were all easy and quick. I am moving out of state and she even offered to ask her friend who lives where I am moving for a dentist and vet recommendation!
I have also seen Dr. Schwartz when Dr. Falcone wasn't available. She did the root canal stuff that wasn't the actual root canal (you have to go somewhere else for that). While she was great and friendly, I had to come back a number of times to get the right crown. I don't hold it against them.
Umm, omg the best dental experience I've ever had hands down no question didn't have to think twice about it.
I have been so disillusioned with the dental profession for so long. I've always thought of them as a poor man's doctor (i.e. couldn't get into med school) and most of them live up to that by being greedy, rude, and useless.
It seems like every other office I've been to in Chicago was hell bent on selling you useless services, utilizing shame as a means of manipulating you (sorry I know this sounds really overly dramatic, but it's how I feel God damnit!) or just totally wasted my time with their ridiculous disorganization.
Anyhow, this place isn't like that at all!! It was a great experience right from when I walked in. Each person I encountered from the Office Manager to the Dental Assistant to the Dentist was extremely competent, friendly, and efficient.
This place is like a shining light in a dark tunnel of corruption! I will never go anywhere else!
So far so good. Really friendly, super clean and sanitized, and really helpful. No one likes the dentist but this place puts all the other dentists I've ever had to shame. No doubt I'm in good hands here.
In and out baby. Too bad Doctor Schwartz is married cuz I think I might have a chance. All in all, I think I was in there for my first visit for only about 45 minutes.
I went in for a chipped front tooth from boxing, and she filled and smoothed the bad boy out in a jiffy. She gave me the option of filling vs. sanding the tooth down and told me the pros and cons.
I went for the "bondo" treatment and she told me what she was doing the whole time. The assistant was really friendly too.
Seeing as how I haven't been to the dentist in years, this was a pretty pleasurable, pain free experience. They took me in a jiffy and fixed my gorgeous smile for my date tonight. I think it went well so, thanks again guys!
Mouthwash tastes good when you swallow it.
I don't have a regular dentist or doctor. I'm a young woman who luckily doesn't get sick or have reason to seek medical attention very often. Unfortunately, I am incredibly clumsy. After a bad fall on my bike, I had to resign myself to the fact that a band-aid and some Neosporin were NOT going to fix my face.
I walked in here looking like a total wreck, and the wonderful staff didn't even bat an eyelash. They took care of me right away. While I filled out a few required forms, they were nice enough to give me some Motrin to ease the pain I was in. Within 15 minutes of walking in, I was in the dentist's chair, having x-rays taken and my mouth examined. Dr. Falcone assessed the damage and carefully explained its extent. It was, in fact, more serious than she would be able to repair. She quickly consulted an oral surgeon, explained the situation, and immediately sent me to go see him. It won't be the last time I see Dr. Falcone though. I'll need a slew of follow-up work done to ensure that my other injured teeth stay where they are. In my mouth.
I was really worried about my insurance coverage. I was clueless about the specifics. The staff assured me not to worry about it, because it was more important for me to get the medical attention I needed. My worries were put at ease. Now if only my face wasn't so messed up...

EDIT: My face is a helluva lot better, but I still have a ways to go. The staff at BWP Dental have come to know me rather well, and have been nothing but kind and professional throughout this entire process.
I have been coming here since I was a kid. My mom brought me here. These ladis are usually friendly at the desk. And the doctor is outgoing
I really like this place. Dr. Schwartz is very friendly, doesn't keep me waiting, and helps me plan out my dental care. She's also very careful with the novacaine needle.
Dear Yelp,
I've depended on you to help me navigate through my almost non-existent night life. I've asked you for advice when purchasing new cell phones, navigation systems, and even book recommendations. You've helped me try new foods/bars that I wouldn't even consider trying out unless you got me super excited about it by inviting me to "elite" events.
Now, you've helped me find the BEST dentist that I've ever met. Dr. Schwartz was super! She was really down to earth, sweet, and explained everything what was happening during my check-up/cleaning. She even was nice to me when I told her that I had a 1/2 a root canal done, and referred me out to a specialist (let's hope she's half as sweet as she was!).
Lucky for me, I get to see her again prior to my next cleaning, as I have awful teeth and need to get a cavity out of my tooth, as well as a crown that will be put on my 1/2 root canal.
Thanks again Yelp, and Yelpers for helping me find my new bdf (best dentist forever!)!!
xoxo

PS--all the staff was really great at my first visit too!
So to start off, I used to love my dentist, but when my family's insurance changed, I couldn't go to him, and had a bad experience with the new dentist. Because of this, I just took care of my teeth as best as I could and decided to wait until I could get my own dentist.
Well that time has come and as I told Dr. Falcone, she passed the test. The appointment was comprehensive and at every point of the examine, things were explained. Not to mention, she was the one who cleaned my teeth! My old dentist did, but the bad one never did that!
I was on the boarder for the deep clean or the regular, and I am glad that we went with the regular... Hopefully we can get things straightened out so that I won't have to get that done. They are under construction right now, but were very quick to make sure that I was aware of the process and looking forward to it! Over all, a great experience for a first visit.
I hate going to the dentist.
As much as it sucks to get your teeth drilled, there could be much, much worse places that I could have gone to. My dentist was great and she talked me through what was going to happen and answered all my questions. The best part was Suzie the dental assistant who stayed with me and helped calm me down before they filled in my cavity. I really appreciated her taking the time to talk to me and reassure me that I would be ok.
A big thumbs up to everyone at Bucktown Wicker Park Dental!
My husband & I became patients of Dr Daza at Bucktown Dental over 8 yrs. ago. We would not have found her if the following had not happened.
My last dentist came on to me, so I felt uneasy & never returned to his south side location on Cottage Grove.
I decided to try a female dentist my husband recommended on Grand & Michigan Avenue, at the time, this was my husband dentist .......Well after 2 visits, I called to schedule a appointment, only to find out she no longer works there. This dentist had ABANDONED her practice without notice.
Dr Daza was the dentist on staff when I was informed my dentist no longer practice in that office. Though I was skeptical, Dr Daza staff person, Sandy asked if I would like to see Dr Daza.
I have been SATISFIED every since. I use to visit the downtown location, in walking distance from my job. I didn't care for the downtown floor plan & taking time off of work for dental visits, so I changed to Dr Daza's Bucktown office. Although Bucktown Dental is on the north side & I live south, I don't mind traveling for the great professional service.
Dr Daza is GREAT at explaining your needs & options. She's A BLESSING IN DISGUISE, after all the issues with the past dentists.
I always had the feeling that they pushed for not so needed services care just to make more money. They dealt with my questioning by saying those cares are covered by my insurance plan anyway... until one day when they found out that the plan covered only one fluoride treatment per year while they did it twice.
Since then I read a couple of articles explaining why fluoride treatments are probably an unnecessary procedure for children in the United States, who have few cavities and live in areas served by fluoridated water= QED!
Dr. Schwartz is a great dentist -- I've been going to her for the past 4 years.
A few weeks ago, I chipped a tooth and she fixed it for free.
Plus, she never makes me chew those nasty pink tablets that show you where you missed brushing!
(P.S. The address and phone number here are old. Her new office is at Wilson and Damen and the number is (773) 561-4508)
I was looking for a good, in-network dentist in my neighborhood, and my friend Giselle recommended Dr. Daza at Bucktown Dental. Dr. Daza is very sweet and did a great job. The staff was nice and friendly, and the place is clean.
One nit-picky star off because the room I was in did not have a TV, and I am kind of use to that at other dental offices.
But still, I will be back (in six months!)
This is the first time in decades I spent so much time with the dentist vs a hygienist. Dr Daza was fantastic. Gentle, polite and all around great. I am happy to have her as my new dentist.
Thanks Dr. Daza!
Super nice place with great staff. Dr. Schwartz is friendly and gets me in and out in 20mins. Can't beat that!
Ok, I feel a little bad writing this too, so let me say first, the staff at the office is very very nice. That wasn't the problem.
I had chipped a tooth grinding my teeth (i'm a giant stress ball), and decided I needed to have it looked at. I went in and my first visit was great. Except for the fact that there was no polishing done, just the "cavitator" was used. Basically the Dr. ran this thing around my gums for about 30 seconds and that was called a cleaning. Nonetheless, the doctor seemed to care, so I thought ok, this will be fine. She took a look at my chipped tooth and said, yeah we're going to have to put a crown on that.
She numbed me up really good, which is really hard to do on me since I'm resistant to novicaine. But she got it done, and did a nerve block, I was very impressed. She ground my tooth down to a nub and fitted me with a temporary crown. It felt great actually, no pain at all. I told her my insurance was running out in 2 weeks so I had to get this done, as I had changed jobs and my insurance wouldn't be kicking in at the new place for another 2 months. She assured me it would be fine.
I came back in about 3 days later to get my permanent crown put on. i reminded her of my insurance situation, and she again assured me it would all be fine. She put some novicaine in and waited about 5 minutes, but this time was not able to get me numb. She put more in, and attempted the nerve block, waited 10 more minutes. She came back and popped the temporary off and i went through the roof. WOW, NOT NUMB!! She looked surprised and said, "You can feel that?" I said.. OOhhh yeah. So she put more novicaine in and I reminded her that I was resistant to novicaine. She said she'd wait 15 more minutes for it to take and come back. Well, it didn't take. She had to scrape the cement from the temporary off of my tooth in 10 second intervals while I dug my finger nails into the chair and tried not to scream in agony. FINALLY, it was time to put the crown on. She couldn't get it to fit, so she ground the crown down, tried it on, still wouldn't fit, ground it down some more, still wouldn't fit. Ground it some more, Ok I think it fits now, but we need to get it polished again from grinding on it so much. Come back in 3 more days. I reminded her again about the insurance as we were coming right down on my final day of insurance. She assured me it would be fine. I came back and went through the same thing with the novicaine and scraping the cement off of my tooth, as she was putting the crown on, and it was my final day of insurance, she said, "I'm still not convinced you don't need a root canal. That's a really 'hot' tooth". I looked at her in disbelief. I had no more insurance and a really sensitive tooth. This was in October of 2006. I've been too scared to go to a dentist since it was so incredibly painful the last time I went to the dentist for this tooth. I've had 4 years of braces and dental work, cavities, etc my whole life and never had a problem with dentists. Now I'm terrified to go. Sometimes to this day, if I brush a little too hard and a bristle gets up under the crown and touches the nub of the tooth, it sends a shiver of pain down my spine. Still a 'hot' tooth. Yikes. I wont' be going back to Wicker Park Dental. But I still don't know where I WILL be going either.
Wow.
I do feel a tinge of guilt as I write this...seeing all the positive ratings, but as I look at the * below this input box (*You can always edit or remove this later.) I find the strength to go on.
~~~[AND I AM EDITING THIS OVER A YEAR LATER....writing extra info at the bottom of this review]~~~
The staff and Dr. Schwartz are very nice. VERY NICE. (I got a personal phone call offering to walk my dog after I had an accident).
And maybe I am just spoiled from having a history of incredible dental work in my home town.
But I have not been impressed in any form with the SERVICES I've received here.
I came in with a painful tooth and was referred to get a root canal. After the root canal was complete, I assumed I would get my crown at my next appointment. Or at least get fitted for it.
Instead, it was sealed up and I was given another appointment after the new year. This was a bummer! - I was wasting good insurance I had left at the end of the year! And I had to come back again.....
So we're on the 3rd visit now, ya still with me?
I receive the work up (whatever the prep for the crown is called) and a temp. Within 2 hours of leaving the office, I chomp into a chicken soft taco and BOOM!KRAK!pbbbt . . . off breaks the temp. Damn ya'll!
I feel the nub of my tooth and open space and call to get ANOTHER arrgh appointment to get ANOTHER temporary crown. I can't get in for a few days (nor does anyone apologize for my inconvenience).
Visit 4:
Another temporary crown. This one is put together in minutes, glued on, and I'm outta there.
This one is bulky, rough, rubs against my tongue, and eventually my whole bottom left side of jaw is in pain.
But I am a trooper and I think, "Just a few more days (one week to be exact) and I will get the real thing and be done!"
This temp fell off last night.
I am torn with how I feel about this,
I WAS in extreme pain and it starts to lift as my suppressed gums are freed. But how can this be good? It is not good! Not good for my gums, my alignment of my lower teeth, or my faith in returning to this dentist.
What are the chances my permanent crown is going to last!
I have had several crowns before and never experienced ANY of this drama.
On a separate note....
I also realized, after I had my cleaning done, that no one cleaned in between my bridge. :( weep. I am not feeling the love from this place. Not at all. I really like my teeth. I have spent money and time to get them white, straight, and healthy. I WANT TO KEEP THEM! I'm looking for a tooth doctor that will help me in my quest. I have yet to find one in Chicago.
~~~So...
I am actually flying back home and going to my old dentist again. Yay!
I changed the rating to 1 star (from 2) because, after going to a good dentist, I realized how bad this place really did screw me over:(
Uggh- such a bad experience. And to top it off (I am assuming that they read my review on here) I was never contacted to schedule follow up appointments or my bi-annual checkups as they told me I would be. Did they just throw my folder out because I wrote a bad review?! We run a business as well - when something like this happens we ALWAYS contact the client to apologize or at least give them the opportunity to tell us what we could do better....so we improve!
It looks like they have a lot of great reviews on here so maybe, just maybe.....they are improving on their own. I, however, will always get the chillywillys when I drive by that office, sticking my thumbs down out the window;)
I just had my first appointment with Bucktown Wicker Park Dental and it was great. Outside of the fact that they were renovating the office, it couldn't have gone any better. They were very courteous, professional and didn't keep me waiting. I can't wait to go back in 6 months and see how great the whole place looks!
Who likes the dentist? Not me. Dr. Falcone was really great, though! Cleaned my teeth, filled a tooth, referred me to an oral surgeon for wisdom tooth extraction. Basically, I have zero complaints. Everything was easy and taken care of.
the best dental experience i have ever had. i had not been in a LONG while so i was really nervous they were going to tell me i needed some major work, but just the opposite. Unlike previous dentists, i did not get scolded for not flossing as often as i should and the cleaning was the easiest i have ever had. Truly painless. the office is not fancy but clean and i think they are remodeling it currently.
Like other yelpers, I found this place through my insurance provider info and looked them up on Yelp. The previous reviews sealed the deal. I found my local dentist. I was in and out with full exam and cleaning in less than 45 minutes. Fast, friendly, thorough..what more can you ask for.
The yelpers were right on the money about this place. Both my husband and I think Dr. Schwartz is awesome. She's friendly, fast, explains things if necessary, and most importantly, the experience is totally pain free. Her office staff is also really nice and were totally patient with us when we had to reschedule an appointment several times.
Update: I recently lost my dental insurance and called Dr. Schwartz to ask how much a check-up and cleaning would cost. The price I was quoted was significantly higher than what it cost with insurance. I asked why it was so much more, if they were willing to accept the lesser reimbursement from insurance. No real answer. I asked if I could get still get the lesser price if I paid cash at the end of my check-up. I was told they'd check with the dentist and get back to me. Never heard back, so two weeks later I followed up and was told they talked to the doctor and she said no. It doesn't make sense to me why they'd charge uninsured people more than they are willing to get from the insurance company, especially if I pay at the end of my treatment so they have their money immediately and have way less paperwork to do. I guess I have to find a new dentist now.
So far I have been very happy with BWPDA. I found them on my insurance provider's website and after reading positive reviews here I decided to see them on an emergency basis for some pretty awful jaw pain. Dr. Falcone very quickly diagnosed me with TMD, a disorder of the jaw joint, and took immediate steps to help me. I have also had a basic cleaning done which was probably the least painful and most complete I have ever had, despite my going four years since the last time I let a dentist get in there with the evil scrapy, hooky thing. They are efficient and kind and very thorough. Even though at one point we had a bit of a scheduling snafu, they were able to accomodate me on short notice and were very apologetic and helpful.
Dr. Michelle Schwartz is fantastic, she's very friendly and easy going and actually makes you feel like you're chatting with a friend instead of going to the dentist. Also she is not judgmental at all if you have problems with your teeth (hate it when dentists guilt trip you about not flossing enough!). The office is always very clean and best of all I have NEVER had to wait!
It's so hard to find a good dentist! Dr. Michelle Schwartz is everything my poor teeth needed. She took time to hear me out on what my general concerns were and gave me options on how to have my teeth cleaned since they are sensitive. She's thoughtful and she listens. Everyone is super nice and the dental hygenists know what they are doing. Search over, phew.
painless! well as much as a dentist can be!
See Michelle she's great and the girls in the office give as painless as you can get X-rays.
good services, however I contacted them twice and they never followed up ... =[
Dr Daza is fabulous and very gentle. She treats my entire family, including my three children. The kids enjoy seeing her and the rest of the staff as they are always kind.
