I want to meet the person who orders the wine !!!
A friendship of 40 years as you can imagine takes you to many places to dine. I don't know how after all those years we missed this one. (Or should I stay I missed it since we are from the same area basically.
It had been a long day of shopping and we wanted somewhere off the beaten path that served cocktails with dinner. This "Tavern" is just that...so don't expect a place that is anything more. Take into account that it is in Englewood, Ohio (small midwest town).
There is a dining room and a bar with tables and booths. We were lucky (in my opinion) to get a booth in the bar. I like bar dining. Seems a little more like your one of the crowd. This place is old and lots of wood. The bar is in the middle of the room and the booths and tables surround it. Lots of locals. We were greeted and seated within 5 minutes on a Saturday night at 5:00 so I was thrilled.
Quick service so I proceeded to order a mixed drink before looking at menu. WHOA...I opened the menu to look over the wines and I leaped from my seat, practically tackled our waitress, and ask her to cancel my order of a mixed drink and bring me a bottle of the Mendicino Sketchbook Pinot Noir. I could not believe it.
This is my favorite wine ...I mean my favorite wine !!! The only place it has been available is at the winery in California or Bravo's. They have before this had an exclusive on the wine.
Now from my excitement you can see why this place got 5 stars. I bounded back to my booth telling my friend, don't worry I am okay but I don't care how good or bad the food is, this is the place I want to come back to ALL the time. (For the record the wine is $12 less a bottle than at Bravos in Indianapolis). Ohio allows you to cork and take unfinished wine with you so this was a plus, but I could have drank the whole bottle if they would not have done that.
I opted for the Prime Rib, baked potato and "skillet" apples. I love a good Prime Rib, and since I rarely eat red meat I always demand it be good or I will send it back. It was very good...served just as I ordered it, medium rare and was prepared nicely. The baked potato was great since it was actually baked and had that wonderful coat of salt on the outside, and the skillet apples were an added treat. I love apples fixed in way you want to fix them and they certainly had a special touch.
The service was great. I asked the waitress if there was any chance I could purchase a couple more bottles of this wine to go. She checked with the bartender and I was allowed to purchase one extra bottle.
Overall this place is probably a 4 star experience. It is a local location with decent food, reasonable prices, and a menu that warrants return trips. For me...they won me over with the wine. (How did they get this wine in this out of the way location when I can't even order it from the winery and have it delivered ) They could have done no wrong on this night, but they did every thing right anyway.
Three cheers for local home town locations. This one will bring me back to the point of becoming a regular. -

I went here on the recommendation of the hotel where I was staying. I dined at the bar and the service was below average, the food average, but the atmosphere was quite nice for a tavern. They seem to have a desire to bring in decent wines and I heard they do host a weekly wine tasting. The lady in charge seemed to be roaming the house truly interested in her patrons' experiences. However, being charged 50c for a sour cream that I never ordered drove the final nail into the coffin.

My previous experiences at the Buckhorn had always been overall okay (and included lunch)... so I'd settled on a three star for the draft I started earlier, but after my last trip, this place is on my veto list for reasons I'll get to soon enough (specifically the service and clientele). Food is of average quality and flavor and in the style of 'old school steakhouse'. Prices are reasonable, and they have a lot of variety... when it comes to meat, that is. Vegetarians beware, carnivores rejoice.
But what really upset me about our most recent attempted visit was their apparent lack of organization when it comes to reservations. We called around 2pm to make a 7pm reservation that same day and were told first that they don't do reservations. Then we were told that they will take our name, but no more than 45 minutes out. So at 6:45pm we promptly called back, only to be told again that they don't do reservations - but that it wasn't too busy so there shouldn't be too long of a wait.
We drove to the restaurant, and upon arrival were greeted with a lobby (if you want to call it that) bursting at the seams with people waiting for tables. I wanted to run out immediately, but eventually one of our party of 5 worked themselves up to the front only to be told that it was a 45 minute wait... minimum. All the while, I was being jostled by large, loud and boisterous clientele while trying to keep them from crushing my 5' grandmother against the wall.
Meanwhile, some diners/bar patrons had just left the restaurant and promptly attempted to start a fight in the parking lot with my brother and dad on the premise that our rental car (and therefore apparently we) were from Virginia. When my brother apologized politely for whatever he had done to offend them, the response was "Yeah you would say that, being from the east coast." No need to explain we're actually from Nebraska... since the bouncer quickly came up to run everyone off, which makes me think parking lot fights aren't out of the question or the norm here. -

While traveling on buisness this place was recommended by the hotel desk. I was very dissapointed. The salad was poor in content and drowned in dressing. I ordered what was supposed to be the Prime Rib. I had ordered it with onions and mushrooms on top so I didn't realize how poor the cut was until I began to eat. It was very stringy and fat. After removing the onions and shrooms, I realized why it was so bad. This steak did not come close to resembling a Prime Rib. Maybe they thought they could pass it off on the next poor soul who ordered toppings with their steak. The loaded baked potato appeared and tasted like a frozen version that you can buy at the local grocery store. Not being one to send food back, I did mention it to the manager who seemed very indifferent. All this added to a very rundown and outdated place that is in the middle of nowhere!... STEER CLEAR!!!

Great steaks. Fresh seafood wonderful service. Great sides- stewed tomatos in particular. Large portions and creative ways to serve good steaks.
Call ahead on weekends to avoid long waits.
Many tables in noisy bar area with TV'sh;
avoid by asking for quieter dining room.
Ask for salad with everything and avoid boring lettuce/crouton mix. No xtra charge.
Ribs are wonderful. Order with sauce on side and dip/brush as desired. Let the slow baked flavor come through! -

Neighborhood institution. Consistently mediocre. I keep trying it every few months hoping it will be better, but without luck. Nice atmosphere - old time feel. Frequently busy. Good, but not great service. Pecan tilapia decent generally, but occasional difficulties maintaining recipe. Salad, mashed potatoes, deviled eggs unremarkable. Did not try steaks or ribs; perhaps they are more commendable. Relatively overpriced. Tried checking in on yelp, but for some reason map finds different location than stated address.

Always had good food, but it is off the beaten path for me.
