Review from Laura B.
Concord, CA
Too much yum for one sandwich - it exploded into a glorious burst of chicken and bbq sauce. The charbroiled chicken sandwich (~$7 after tax) is the kind I unabashedly abandon my vegetarianism for. The house BBQ sauce should be another tap on the soda fountain - I practically drink it as it is.
Great location on the ground floor of the Metreon. This food court is gonna be crackin once construction is done!
Only downside with Buckhorn is that it costs $3 to add soda and fries, bringing a total sandwich meal to a little over $10. A little steep for everyday lunch, but great for every now and then. The quality (as far as a fast chicken or tri-tip sandwich goes) cannot be beat. -
Review from Joel E.
Stringy chewy tri-tip. Meat and bread is all there is to the sandwich au jus . . . with tons of tenderizer. At $9 for a 6 oz sandwich, this is basically just over-priced mall food. The Char-roasted sirloin tri-tip is supposed to be their specialty. I'd rather eat at an Arby's where my teeth go through the sandwich when I bite into it, instead of getting caught in the stringy beef that Buckhorn serves up. This is supposedly served on a "handmade" French roll. Really? I doubt it.
By the way, "Char-roasted"? What's that? Marinated -- yes, but in way too much tenderizer. "Hand-rubbed with special seasoning" . . . Really? I'm not sure I want their hands on my meat!!
I'm always suspicious when I'm presented with a tab containing a blank for a gratuity to be added when I have ordered from a counter, get served on paper plates & cups, required to pick up my own napkins & straw, I'm called back up to counter to pick up my order, served on a tray, and expected to carry my tray & trash when finished. Where is the service in that? . . . and Buckhorn Grill had the gall to present my visa receipt for signature with a blank space to fill in for gratuity. Maybe I should put in a negative number and reduce my bill since I'm doing the work for them. For a $9 sandwich, this is F'in overpriced
To me, "Meh, I've had better" is quite an accurate statement for this place. This is a 2 which leaning back towards a 1 . . . I won't be going back to this place. -

The restaurants in the Metreon are opening again.
Some of them, anyway, including the Buckhorn Grill.
My Lady has been on a very successful weight program this year, and I have been very successful at not gaining weight. Well. I think it's about time that I get on her program. So what is there to eat?
My Lady orders a Caesar salad, no croutons, no cheese, and a topping of tri-tip beef. She rounds out her order with a Kenwood chardonnay.
OK, I'm in! I'll have the same. And the whole dinner for 2 rings in at under $40.Listed in: Free School Downtown

They have good tri-tip. I suggest going to them if you're in the metreon and looking for meaty goodness.

I tried Buckhorn a long time ago when I worked at a dot com nearby. I probably wouldn't have tried it again if it weren't for the Yelp Elite event at the Metreon re-opening. I was quite surprised by the moist, tender, and flavorful tri-tip in the steak sandwich. I even bought some to take home with me after the event. The salads didn't float my boat as much as Soup Company's salads but they do give the option of adding tri-tip to your salad. For a mall restaurant, the meat is great.

Horrible food, horrible service. Go to any other place at the Metreon food court at all costs!

Great tri-tip sandwiches with pretty good portions. Also love the fried onion strings. A little greasier than I thought they would be, but the taste more than makes up for it. Unfortunately, you will pay too much for what you actually get.

Still a solid place for quick, hearty, affordable food downtown.
I ordered the salmon sandwich with mushrooms today. It started off great, but I was disappointed to discover that my salmon wasn't all that well cooked. I ended up leaving most of it uneaten.
I'd still recommend Buckhorn for a reliable meal. Their menu is big enough that you're bound to find something that you like here. Their staff are also very friendly and efficient, and even if you find yourself waiting in line for awhile, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how fast they turn out your food (which may have explained my undercooked salmon).
A high three stars for a place that I'm glad to see has survived in the Metreon.

I don't really know what to make of this place. It's a small California-based chain that I've never seen it anywhere else, they've only got a handful of places in the CA.
This one in particular is a little food court joint tucked away in the graveyard that is the Metreon, that does sort of barbeque and other assorted meats-applied-to-fire. Basically it's pricy fast food.
For what it's worth though, it's pretty good pricy fast food. I duck in here for lunch at least once when I'm in town for a conference, and it's always busy. Their burgers are pretty good, some of the better ones I've had out of a chain restaurant.
The biggest downside, honestly, is the aforementioned wait. Part of it is the traffic, and part of it is the wait in preparing the food - the latter of which isn't so bad because it's hot and fresh off the grill when you eat it. That is pretty great.
If you can get in the door and don't mind standing around for a bit, Buckhorn's a great place to grab a bite. Carnivores will totally dig it. -
Review from Anya R.
So my friends and I were spending MLK Day in Moma and we were hungry so we decided to go to the Metreon because he remembered that there was a a bunch of restaurants in here but when we went there was only a few- A Mexican place and then Buckhorn that looked more appealing so we tried this place.
A bunch of stuff was closed because they are building a Target to be opened later this year.
So for lunch it was cool that they had the special for 8 bucks which included a half tri tip/chicken sandwich, soup, and drink.
I got the tri tip and the meat was okay- it was kind of too dry for me. I wish it was more red and juicy. There's only nothing else in there literally just meat in bread so didn't like it all too much.
I did love that they had French onion soup tho! That was super yummy with the carmelized onions, soaked bread, and of course CHEESE!
The salads looked pretty hearty and big so I would be down to try that next. -

Sometimes I forget about going to the Metreon for lunch, even though we're just across the street. It's because there aren't stellar options there, but for mall food, Buckhorn is pretty consistently good.
I usually order the Roadhouse Buck (Thick sliced tri-tip with Roadhouse Onions & Red Ranch sauce topped with bleu cheese crumbles) or the Yik-Yak Salad with chicken or salmon. Their fries are really yummy too. Yesterday I decided to get their special 1/2 chicken sandwich with a cup of clam chowder and a drink for $8. While the chicken sandwich was pretty average, the clam chowder (I was told it was homemade) was surprisingly delicious! It wasn't the usual thick consistency, but it was extremely tasty.
So, if you're in a rush for a quick lunch or trying to catch a movie, Buckhorn is your best bet in the Metreon. Your order is ready before you make it to the pick-up counter. (Not as quick in the SF Center food court though.)Listed in: Lunch spots near Yelp HQ

So lets say I was having a bad day. You know, the kind of day where happy couples make you vomit a little in your mouth, and you want to push over people because they're walking too slowly in front of you and WHO CARES IF SHE WAS 95 FUCKING MOVE, and your Muni train is delayed because someone fell down and instead of thinking "I hope she's ok" you think "SHIT THIS IS FUCKING GOING TO MAKE ME LATE FUCK."
That was yesterday. Buckhorn's was my comforting hug at lunch that provided me with a type of love that I didn't know before and may never know again.
Goddamn that Bacon Cheddar Buck was tasty. I mean, it may lead to heart disease and cancer and rabies and all that but it was delicious. A little pricey maybe. But can you put a price on comfort? I can't.
And wow, I don't know how the hell my order was ready before I even finished ordering but props to them for being all psychic and shit. Seriously, that was some quick turn around time.
The Metreon location is nice for lunch because it's not too crowded but you can still blend in when you're pretending to read a newspaper because you don't have friends in real-life, only on Yelp.

Review from Steve L.
After walking around hundreds of booths at a trade show at the Moscone Center for the past 3 hours, I feet were dragging, I was tired, and in desperate need of a protein pick-up.
Walked into the Metreon, and saw the long line at Buckhorn Grill. Initially discouraged, but determined to sink my teeth into one of their tri-tip sandwiches.
Finally, after reaching a register to place my order. After they gave me a beeper, was going to walk to my table, and before I left the restaurant, the beeper went off. Yeah!
Tried to pick up my order, but a bunch of high schoolers were blocking the pick up counter. I said excuse me, and a couple of these teenagers looked at me, but didn't move, even as a I pointed to my tray. Feeling a little punchy, I said it louder with a a nice hard stare. They got the hint and quickly stepped aside. (I'm really a nice guy!)
I ordered the Roadhouse Buck, which is a tri-tip sandwich with fried onion strings, and bleu cheese, and another side of onion strings. After one bite, life was good, my energy started to return. After I was done, I was ready to walk around and talk to more exhibitors for another 3 hours. -
Review from Miriam W.
I walked into Buckhorn intending to get soup or salad. But none of the soups excited me and the salad dressing choices were unappealing as well. Chicken tenders and mashed potatoes to the rescue!
The mashed potatoes were the chunky kind with plenty of red skins and topped with a meaty gravy. The chicken tenders were also quite delightful when dunked into an above average ranch dressing.
For a quick, satisfying meal to go, Buckhorn Grill made a fan out of me. -

Gahhh, I'm such a sucker. I really don't care for the whole meat-on-bread thing unless it's a burger, but the little sign in their door advertising "Your Food in 5 Minutes or it's FREE" totally got me to give it a shot. See, to me that's a direct challenge--a bold one at that. I even ordered something extra-complicated just to tip the odds in my favor--mashed potatoes, no gravy, but butter instead. I was hoping muscle memory would take over, they'd pour the gravy, and then have to start over. My friend also had some interesting requests for her grilled salmon sandwich.
Anyhow, I thought I had it in the bag. I was even gentlemanly enough not to start the timer on my cell phone until we sat down, which gave them about 10 extra seconds.
........
I'll be damned if we didn't have our food inside of 4 minutes.
The mashed potatoes were PERFECT and met my exacting standards...No complaints about the food at all. I normally wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but my pride demands a rematch. Buckhorn, this is fair warning. I'm gunnin' for ya. -
Review from Elaine N.
Man, for the awesomeness of the Metreon, you'd expect good eats. Last time, I came and ate sushi... Terrible. I looked up the Mexican place... 1 star? It came down to Buckhorn Grill or Belgian waffles for dinner.
My friend and I chose Buckhorn since this place had a lot of customers and all the other "restaurants" had tumbling tumbleweed. Also, he really likes meat and hates American food, so I suggested we come here in attempt to secularize him! Woooot for good friends! (;
Any who, we both chose an item on the menu and decided to split and share. I picked the California burger and he got the Chickenshroom. Service was a bit slow, but I guess it was due to the large amount of people.
We got our orders and headed back to the dorms. I ate all the fries on my way out of the MUNI train, I was pretty damn hungry. They were soggy, but I really liked the seasoning. If there wasn't any seasoning, that just goes to show you how hungry I was.
After we opened our orders, we were a bit surprised.. They were so small! We paid $21 something for that?! The burger was pretty small and the sandwich's bread was about the side of a large hot dog bun.
We both agreed that the burger was much better than the sandwich. He was still hungry, I wasn't (probably all those fries with the delicious seasoning!). Um, yeah. Had I known, I probably would have signed up for those stamp cards. Oh well..
3.5 stars? -
Review from Quinn S.
As far as fast food goes, this is one of my favorites. Ridiculously quick turnaround between ordering and being served, good, although often tough steak sandwiches, self-serve soda, and fried onion strings to die for on the sandwich or as a side.
I really appreciate most - and this is what prompts me to give a mall fast food joint four stars - the selection of sauces. Not only is there ketchup, but also a good BBQ sauce and a horseradish mayo that I love.Listed in: Lunch Near the Office

I have mixed feelings about this place.. The food was tasty and well priced but the service was HORRIBLE.
I ordered the Chicken sandwich which was very tasty...the fries sucked, zero flavor and not crispy. The rest of the people order the following and loved it; Bacon Cheese Burger and Tri-Tip sandwich. All of the items were pretty well priced especially for San Francisco.
The customer service, just sucks!!! I asked for ketchup since they were out and they gave me attitude and made it very clear that I was inconveniencing them. My friend was waiting a long time for her dish (Tri-Tip) and it took way too long. When we asked them what was taking so long, they rolled their eyes and gave us her food. They never once apologized for the delay. When I say delay, we ordered at the same time and she waited an extra 10 minutes. -
Review from Jill D.
As a lover of Patrick Swayze I simply could NOT resist ordering the Roadhouse salad. I toned down the testosterone a little bit and had chicken added to it instead of the steak.
DELICIOUS!
I inhaled the entire thing and it was worth every penny I didn't have to pay for it because my girl Natalie N. was taking me out. I really think this is a great value given the proximity to tourists, shops, malls and the lack of decent dining options. I have to say that I will make this a repeat stop if I'm ever in the area and need to get my grub on.
Now if only it had come with a side of "Ghost" I would have been in heaven! -

If Mo's is closed and you aren't in the mood for Firewood, then this is the only other place in the Metereon that is worth eating.
We were served quickly by a friendly cashier. The place smelled good and delivered a decent sandwich. Stuffed full, with lots of cheese and au jus on the side. I was bummed that the serve the au jus in a tall plastic cup. It made it difficult to dip the sandwich in. The mashed potatoes for the combo were seasoned right. Sava's boyfriend's bacon and cheese tri trip smelled amazing. A nice little food court establishment. -

San Francisco, CA
I wouldn't quite call this local food court fixture a "steakhouse", but its pretty good, and sitting there enjoying my succulent tri-tip meat slabs certainly beat the shit out of having to spend 8 grueling minutes talking to each of the 20 slabs of female meat I scoped at the 8-Minute Dating event I was scheduled to be in at Jillian's around the corner. Remind me never to sign up for one of those again. Anyhow, the meat slabs were so tasty, that I brought home like two pounds of them. The broccoli/raisin/sunflower seed salad is pretty tasty too.
Update 10/15/06: Its a very butt ass idea to bring home a whole slab of tri tip if you're thinking of eating it throughout the week as leftovers. I forgot that meat rewarmed in the microwave is horrible. -

Absolutely delish! The Caesar Pleaser came with two thick slices of juicy tri-tip and a hearty Caesar salad and some au jus for dippin! It was yummy and for the somewhat hefty price about $11 it left me satisfied and full for hours.
I really love their salads and haven't really tried the sandwiches from what I can tell those are good as well. Another thing I love about this place is it has a frequent eater plan. You eat; they eventually give you credit for more food! ROCK ON! Try the Cabo Salad -minus bleu cheese instead I replace it with Pepper Jack it goes way better with the mexi-flavors. -

The Little Buck combo with a tri-tip sandwich, choice of sides (get the mess of thin-cut onion rings), and a drink for $6.99 is your best lunch option. If you're feeling rich, the tri-tip steak platter for $10 has really wonderfully tasting meat that comes au jus.
Once upon a time the chicken sandwiches here had a yummy sauce on them. The sauce has been replaced and I haven't had it now in 4 years.
There's a bizarre frequent eater program there that we signed up for, yet have never seen any record of our accumulated points (despite giving our phone number each time to add new points to however many we have by now...). -

Bacon Cheddar Buck. Where do I even begin?
In the course of 5 days while my buddy was here visiting me from Toronto, we accidentally happened upon Buckhorn Grill. We were at the Metreon so that we could demolish 15 year old punks on Guitar Hero, but the Playstation Store changed the game to Gran Turismo, so with our tail between our legs we went to get food instead and randomly chose Buckhorn Grill.
My buddy was beside himself with the regular tri-tip sandwich , he says it's the most delicious sandwich he'd ever had in his life. I had the Bacon Cheddar Buck, and believe me, it was pretty close to the most delicious thing ever. I'm leaving room just in case, but frankly I can't picture anything more delicious than that. The Bacon was perfectly crisp... not too hard, not too soft, and they had a generous amount of bacon, perfect for the size of the sandwich.
The meat was absolutely perfect as well, a nice juicy pink. The Ranch Dressing or whatever magic elixir they use to put the sandwich together was what distinguished itself from every other sandwich place I have ever had in my life. Lord have mercy, I want one right now.
Over the course of 5 days that he was here, we ate 9 sandwiches each, at every hour of the day that they were open. One tip: the sandwiches tend to be better during the peak hours, when the meat is fresher. It's not that the meat at the end of the day is bad, it's just not perfect. It's a bit well-done, whereas to get the absolute best from the sandwich, you need the pink, juicy meat.
The only reason why this doesn't get a 5 is because I feel like they have priced the sandwich too perfectly, at $6.95. It's at the upper-end of the range of which I would pay for this sandwich. $7.95 would have been too much, but I still would have paid it grudgingly, but $6.95 is just enough so that I don't really notice it, but it's not a "deal". Thus, they priced it perfectly, because it's half the size of a subway sandwich, and about 50% more expensive, but it's definitely beyond anything you could get at either Subway or Quizno's.
If it were $5.95, this place would be a 5 star rating. But if they did that, they wouldn't have made the extra $18 from me and my buddy, so I guess we both win. -
Review from Bill B.
Tasty food and quick service anchor this walk-in restaurant. Lots of seating in the food court area, but not much within the restaurant itself. If it's a nice day, go sit outside in the Yerba Buena Gardens with everyone else.
Prices tend to be a little high ($9 for the meal combo) but not too bad. However, they didn't even blink when I ordered the kid's meal for $5 (tri-tip sandwich, fries, sm. drink), so I'm happy. It was plenty of food for a grown-up and would be a lot for a small kid. In addition to tri-tip sandwiches, they also have crispy chicken and several salads. You can also order a whole tri-tip to take home for dinner.
The beef is juicy and flavorful, very well cooked. Fries tend to be crispy, light, and tasty...meaning they're surely cooked in actual beef fat. Mmmm...
Trivia: Tri-tip became popular starting in Santa Maria, CA where it is grilled whole or rotisserie style. It is known for its full flavor, lower fat content, and comparatively lower cost. -
Review from Wilson L.
Daly City, CA
The prices are reasonable and this is simply the best place in the Meteron food court..
I usually get the chicken sandwich or their "Little buck" and a salad and a drink for under $8. Yeah, expensive for a small sandwich, but if you compare this to the other places around the area, you'll soon appreciate their fast food preperation (5 mins or its free) and friendly customer service.
Their salads aren't that bad either. However, they screw up the rings. They are overly drenched in oil, and a really bad oil. Maybe they never change their oil.. lets not go there. -
Review from Derek B.

Disgusting. They lure you in at the Westfield with those delicious tri tip samples. I finally ordered the platter at the Metreon location and it was awful. Meat was NOT good at all. Two big slabs of fat-ridden tri tip. Worst of all is that health inspection report posted in the dining room... their score? 70!!! We read the report and it mentioned RAT DROPPINGS in the kitchen.
Ugh. SICK. -
Review from Hanley B.
I had lunch here after looking up places to eat on Yelp. It was OK. I don't know about the best tri-tip I've ever had but it was decent. I had one of the sandwiches and it was decent. The tri-tip didn't really have much flavor. They need to season or marinate with something.
The salads looked pretty good. I ordered the "roadhouse onions" after seeing a plate of the fries. The fries looked very generic and not all that great. But the onions were good. Very thin, deep-fried onion strands. I probably wouldn't walk to the Metreon from Howard and First again, but I wasn't upset that I did that day.
The kitchen looked clean and the cashiers were friendly. It's definitely a good place for food-court food, but not a great steak place when compared to places outside of a food-court. -

Perfect for a pre-movie snack.
I get the side of mashed potatoes and gravy...mm..they leave the skins on, so there's lots of good texture, and a little hint of garlic, plus a rich gravy. It's not large enough for a meal, but still good sized (and leaves me hungry enough for in-movie snacks :) )
And, if you're with a boy, get him an anchor steam! He'll love it (and you). -

My best discovery about this place is that they serve French onion soup. For some reason, it's an item that I crave for at times, and now I discovered that I can order it here at a reasonable price without having to go to some fancy French restaurant.
Oh, and also I have ordered the tri tip steak here before also (that was when I first discovered the French onion soup was on the menu), and the steak was quite good too. I definitely wouldn't mind coming back for that also. -

Tri-tip, fried onions, and chowder. Stick a fork in me because I'm done.

Best. Salads. Ever.
This is coming from a vegetarian who's usually strictly anti-salad...
Try their Roadhouse Salad or Cabo Chop salad. You can add meat if you like, but they're HUGE and pretty filling even w/ out meat.
The shoestring fried onions are absolutely wonderful. French fries aren't bad too.
The Metreon location is the best location I've been to so far. -

4 stars for a 3 star experience because I'm feeling generous today.
When you look at it, they have vegetarians included throughout the menu. Though on my last occasion, they were out of portabellos and hence there 3-4 menu items with portabellos were unserveable.
Umm, Buckhorn manager please note you are across the street from Bristol Farms and a 5 minute walk from Whole Foods. You should never be out of Portabella or well anything at 9 pm on a Saturday night. I'm just saying.
part of the Metreon and with a promise of delivery in under 5 minutes, this place allows you to make going to the movies a healthier experience than raise nets and salt and oil laden popcorn. -

My 4 star review covers 2 things:
- speed of service. Given the massive lines at the Metreon for any food options (especially during prime time) I've hadd pretty good luck at getting my food in less than 10 minutes.
- cabo chopped salad. this wonder comes with romaine lettuce, cherry tomatoes, avocado, corn, JICAMA and some other veggies with a tasty lime/honey dressing in an edible tortilla bowl. get some tri-tip on top and an order of the onion strings on the side and you have the makings of a super yummy pre or post Metreon movie meal. the best part - once you've eaten all the salad innards and if you are still hungry, eat the dressing soaked tortilla bowl. SO GOOD. -

Don't laugh! I order the kids meal here. The little Spike, little Chicken or Chicken tenders here are jus the right size for me.(mini version of the larger items on menu) Includes a Goldilocks size soft drink, fries, or the roadhouse onions for jus 5 dollars. It's a hop, skip, and jump away from the Moscone Center. (literally 2 min walk outside) I promise I am not 11 yrs old, but feel like I am because I just got done working the GDC show. Ate lunch here 3 days in a row and I never do that. The sandwhiches are tasty especially with the sauce and I am addicted to those wonderful caramelized onions. So crispy melts in my mouth DELICIOUS.
During the RSA show, I was under the weather and ordered the corn tortilla soup. It was suprisingly good. It had a homemade quality...
Whatever you do, don't eat at Moscone. When my co-workers say this, it's a death wish for premade stale sandwhiches and lifeless salads(exhoribantly priced too).
Seating is tight if you want to sit right next to the cashier at BG, Hello there are a ton of seats in the Metereon atrium area. I frankly sit on the benches outside 'round the corner, if it's sunny. Otherwise, I would be completely wilted from Moscone airconditioning. Bottom line BG is quick (I mean fast) Great bite to eat while your doin the convention or movie thing... -

The juicy slab of tri-tip garnished with blue cheese and carmelized onion otherwise known as the Roadhouse Buck sandwich is top-notch! I also like the chicken breasts platter but is kind of on the greasy side.
If you are in downtown SF then I would recommend stopping by the Sony Metreon and having the Roadhouse Buck. It is great. -

I'm never disappointed whenever I order from BG, but this time I was.
- Over cooked sweet potato fries
- Over cooked Tri Tip, really tough tough meat to cut through.
- 2 pieces of veggies, menu said red mashed potatoes on the side. I got a sliver of a red red bell pepper and a carrot.
I was sad. Maybe it was their off day, but I don't understand because it wasn't busy at all... three customers including me. If I'm paying close to $20 for food, it better be some what good.

My favorite is the Roadhouse Buck (sliced tri-tip with crispy Roadhouse Onions, and red ranch sauce, topped with bleu cheese crumbles).
Every time I have ordered the Roadhouse Buck, the tri-tip is thinly sliced...so I have always expected that every time I order this sandwich. I made the mistake of ordering this same sandwich at the San Francisco Westfield shopping center, and got a really thick slice piece tri-tip...yuck! Buckhorn at the Metreon ruined me.
