Review from Lars Elling L.

Just spent a couple nights with these nice folks as I romped around Sequoia National Park (only a mile from the South entrance - SUPER convenient) and I am pleasantly enchanted by the place. Seated on a small rushing river with a beautiful mountain view out my window and small porch, it made me relax instantly. Check in was friendly & efficient (all the Park trail / road-condition info support and breakfast gift basket was super helpful - especially the bananas, which I'll explain in a moment...), the rooms have free wifi and free phone calls (long distance, too) included and come with mini-fridge, microwave, coffee-maker & WHOLE BEAN coffee w/a grinder. The bed was actually comfy (not too stiff or soft, with pillows of varying firmness, a nice touch) and the room heater was no noisier that what you'd find at a chain establishment. The bathroom was small but well-maintained and had plenty of hot water for the 1/2 hour+ "Hollywood shower" I took to head off muscle cramps from hiking (the potassium in those gift basket bananas saved MY LIFE, let me tell you...). All in all, one of the nicest family-run properties I have stayed at in YEARS. I know I'll be back when I want to hike in Kings Canyon or Sequoia again.

The Buckeye Tree Lodge is the closest hotel to the National Park entrance and is located with a river running outside your back door. You can find deer grazing near your window in the early morning and I wouldn't leave food in your car (bears). Hey, that's nature, right?
While you are paying for the location and scenery over comfort and luxury it's worth it to me. I am not the type to stay in my room all day and was only there to sleep so it worked out fine. I have stayed here before and can't complain other than the outdated style. The room came with a fridge, micro, coffee maker, old Zenith 12" TV, and (free) telephone.
When I checked in the lady at the front desk was very sweet and we even got a nice little breakfast basket every day we stayed. It was nice to have extra snacks/drinks for our trips into the park.
This place may not have changed much since the 70's but it's still worth the stay, if just for the location alone. -

Rooms are good size and very clean. Nice breakfast basket each day with fresh fruit, juice, and homemade muffins. The pool is nice to cool off in. The river running out back is awesome. Nice grassy area out back with a charcoal BBQ grill, tables and chairs. Only 1/4 mile to Sequoia entrance, very quiet area.
Would stay here again. AAA discount available when we stayed. Free WIFI. Cell phones don't work that well in this area, but they offer free calls to the US from the room which was nice. -

I loved this place. The location was amazing (also right on the river, apparently i'm a sucker for large bodies of water). The room was big, clean, and had all the normal hotel amenities. Yeah, stuff was kind of outdated, but whatever, just go out the back door and check out some nature. Thats why you came here in the first place.
The lady in the front was really nice, and there were a ton of friendly cats roaming around (not a selling point for some, I'm sure). I love cats, and rivers, and nice people, so this place was perfect for me. It is the last stop before entering Sequoia, and is within a mile or two of some weird little shops.
I would highly recommend this hotel or motel or lodge or whatever it is to anyone i know. It is not classy, but then again, nothing fun ever is. -

I stayed here in August 2011. I was worried since I previously gave them a poor review, so i let my father handle the bookings. ;)
I like this place. The proximity to the forest is incredible. I had my dog in tow and I love that this place is dog friendly. There is a beautiful river flowing in the back and you can walk down to the banks.
The rude receptionist was no longer there or was having a good day and was not rude anymore.
I would consider this place again for sure.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Zach M.
Los Angeles, CA
Let me preface this by saying my review is not so much based on accommodations as it is on the way in which they choose to run their hotel / business.
Me and my girlfriend had a room booked for my best friend's wedding, in fact, the entire hotel was being reserved for his wedding party. Due to the unfortunate passing of my girlfriends father we had to cancel our reservation somewhat last minute. As if not being able to go to my best friends' wedding, and my girlfriends father passing wasn't bad enough, the owner of the Buckeye Tree Lodge made it very clear that they would still be charging us for the room despite our explanation, and expressed absolutely zero sympathy for our situation. I understand most hotels have cancellation policies in place to avoid losing money, and i figured they could possibly find it in themselves to wave the fees given the circumstances, I was wrong.
If I could give them a zero rating i would have, and to anybody else considering staying here I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. This is NOT the way to run a business. -

I spent two nights at the Buckeye Tree Lodge a few weeks ago while my wife and I visited Sequoia National Park. The lodge is perfectly located less than a mile from the park gate, and was very reasonably priced during the winter season. The accommodations are adequate but obviously older -- our room was painted brick with a firm bed, tiny bathroom, and a small kitchenette with table & microwave. My usual tendency is to be critical of such things, but I was specifically looking for a quaint getaway on this trip and so could not have been happier. The heater kept the room warm and we were comfortable enough with an extra blanket provided by the hospitable staff. It was nice to wake up to a sunrise view of the river out the back door each morning.
We also spent one night at the Sequoia Village Inn across the street, which appears to be under the same management. I wrote a separate review for that one, check it out.
Winter is a great time to visit Sequoia Park if you're looking to avoid the crowds. If you aren't planning on staying inside the park and are not too picky, I would gladly recommend the Buckeye Tree Lodge. -

Cute, small (only 7 rooms?), clean. Beds were firm and nice. The back overlooked the river. That was beautiful. They had juice and some fruit/pasteries in basket on table for breakfast. Old style, but enjoyable. We slept well. Very close to entrance of Sequoia.

So it was our 2nd anniversary and we decided to go to Sequoia National Park. Browsing around we stumbled upon the Buckeye Tree Lodge. Location is great, being that it's the last hotel before the park and it's on the river. The view from our room was amazing. Staff was very nice as well. The inside is a bit dated but will suit you well since you're in the wilderness anyways. The only thing you get for breakfast is a little basket with fruit and a muffin. All in all it was a nice place to stay at a reasonable price.

We love this place. It's our go-to getaway spot when we need a break from life in Fresno. It's very near the entrance to Sequoia National Park. The rooms all overlook the roaring Kaweah River. The view alone makes it worth staying here. We spent one whole evening sitting outside watching deer graze across the river. There's quite a few gorgeous birds around too. The staff is friendly and helpful. They leave breakfast in your room before you arrive. The rooms are a tad dated, so if you're a high maintenance person, you should go stay at a generic chain instead, but this a wonderful place for most people.
