Great local store. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Very guitar-centric shop, heavy on the stringed instrument side. The guys here have a wealth of knowledge. Great way to support a local business instead of giving your $ to Guitar Center.

Depending on who you interact with at Buckdancer's you could give this place any number of stars based on customer service. The fact that they can be a bit gruff should not scare you away, they'll warm up if you find some common ground (here's a hint, it's a MUSIC store).
Buckdancer's has a fabulous selection of instruments and accessories. I like that they're independent. Prices are competitive with guitar center, and you don't have to show a receipt for a patch cable you just purchased so they'll let you out the door.
I docked a star because they use the factory setup for the instruments they're trying to sell. Some of the strings are in woeful condition too, and while I know that maybe they don't feel the need to put new sets of strings on every guitar so good-for-nothings like myself can come in and noodle on them, it would possibly sell more instruments. -

It's always nice when you walk into a shop thinking that you need something and they talk you out of a purchase. This has happened to me twice at Buckdancer's Choice, one time when I didn't need something that I thought I did and another when they showed me how to take care of something myself.
This makes it easier for me to decide not only where to shop in the future, but who to trust with my axe if she ever needs repair. -

Their in-store selection is so vast and varied that you are bound to find something relevant to your music no matter what your background, the people there don't seem to have any agendas other than getting you what you want how you want it. When it comes to my music shopping I'm very particular, and the useful, expert-advice that is there when you want it is refreshing compared to the dimwitted "mind-reading" pushiness I've dealt with at other stores. The guitar selection covers all the bases, from expensive rare stuff in glass cases to cheap stuff when you're in a jam. The DJ/Recording/Live Audio selection is current and competitive, especially for the area. Guitar pedals, stringed instruments, basses, ethnic stuff, all IN-STORE!! plus they can order pretty much anything I've ever thrown at em. This is my favorite music store in the country.

Buckdancer's Choice is a great local music store. The staff members are friendly and knowledgeable without being pushy. I take music lessons there and my instructor is a top-notch professional who plays in several local bands. Also, the guys are great about letting you look around - I sometimes go in just to hang out and play the ukuleles!

"Maine's biggest music store" is... kind of small, for a statewide "biggest," anyway. I buy most of my gear secondhand direct from the seller but Buckdancer's is my usual spot for things not worth shipping such as accessories. Some things are kind of pricey and others more reasonable so it's not a one stop shop for me. Staff is usually helpful and also good natured about returns and exchanges (too much Behringer gear, though). They have a lot of guitars but the synth and pro audio sections are weak, to say the least. Used gear sections can hold some gems but most of it's overpriced (mics, for instance). I don't think I've ever been in a Guitar Center but it's better here than most of what I've read about those.
