Hubby and I decided to try some Q, place is tiny but so charming. u can only sit 8 in entire restaurant. More of a take out place I suppose. Sauces are delicious and they have meal prices that range from $5-$14.99 for full rack of baby back ribs. The one meat combo only $8 but it's for normal appetites. If you have a large appetite for BBQ you may want to a larger portion! But, for hubby and I the $8 deal (see pics) was PERFECT and we are big foodies. A little slow, maybe cuz it's new and they take their time smoking that Q so worth the wait. Lots of large to go orders placed when we were there and only one person in front and 1 in back. We came at 7 so maybe it's a popular time. worth a try- hubby loved the beef rib , one of best he said . Hubby and I are ECSTATIC to FINALLY have Q in Covina. We plan to show up frequently! Hubby is hard to please and he said, 'one of best bbq beef ribs I have ever had". Accolades to buckboard!!!

I really like this place. The food us very tasty and it's great not to have one of those bbq chain restaurants. The only thing is that their location is really small. So if its busy u won't find a place to sit.

Woke up from a lazy afternoon nap and I was hankering for some BBQ. Buckboard Catering sounded good. Now, don't let the "Catering" part of the name confuse you, they also serve food to go so you can walk right in and order whatever your heart desires. They have a good number of items on the menu ranging from combos to $5 all day specials to BBQ sandwiches, tacos, or burritos. You can even buy BBQ by the pound or pieces.
Their signature item is the Buckboard Chili which is my favorite out of the six items I tried. It's a hearty chili with bite size chunks of tri tip barbecued Santa Maria style, beans, and tomato pieces. It's not spicy so you can easily load up on it. I think this chili would be even better over some steamed rice à la Hawaiian style. I'll try it that way next time I get a quart to go.
My second favorite item was the tri tip that was tender and tasty. I didn't even need the BBQ sauce. The dinner combo came with two slices of garlic bread so I made a sandwich out of it. The tri tip is really where it's at. I highly recommend anything they serve with tri tip in it.
Honorable mention to the homemade potato salad with sliced black olives. I love olive so this may be a little biased. Also, tried the beef rib, baby back rib, and BBQ chicken. They seemed a little dry so it could have been an off day.
I struck up a conversation with Louis who was working the counter. He's super nice and hospitable. Even though I didn't order the chili with my dinner combo, he gave me a small cup to try. He also told me a little bit about Buckboard and even went as far as to say they switched the dinner roll with garlic bread in the dinner combo because the roll was getting too expensive for them. LOL Made me feel like he was shooting the breeze with a long time customer even though it was my first time. -
Review from Harold I.
Considering the surrounding areas particular lack of quality BBQ, Buckboard is really a standout. Santa Maria style tri-tip is their specialty, so that's what I ordered. Actually, I ordered the tri-tip sandwich and fries lunch special.
First off, you can see with your own eyes what Santa Maria style is all about: behind the counter is a custom setup made expressly for cooking directly over hot wood chunks, with a grate that can be moved down and up as much as several feet above the flames. You can almost call it direct grilling, at a distance large enough to mimic indirect methods.
Anyway, the tri-tip sandwich was fantastic. Dry rub, the not-to-heavily smoked flavor profile characteristic of Santa Maria style, and cooked to perfection. Sliced up against the grain and piled high on a buttered roll. No sauce here, which is a good thing. If you like sauce, you can pour it on yourself in whatever quantity you desire. Just leave me out of it!
The fries were fresh cut and all natural. I really enjoyed the whole meal!
A note to all: Buckboard Catering Co. is moving out of town on March 26th, 2011. They are going to Covina, where they will focus on their catering business and offer take-out food only (no sit-down area is planned). Enjoy it while it lasts! -

Ugh the wait........
That was the worst part.
There were lots of good parts fortunately
This place is all about Santa Maria style BBQ so I got a trip tip sandwich.
I came with a pile of hand cut skin on fries.
The sandwich was served on grilled garlic bread.\
Everything worked well together. I loved the fries with a little BBQ sauce.
I will be back to try the 5 dollar lunch menu
OH! And you can get 10 percent off from their website -

GREAT TRI-TIP !!!!!
I have been eating Buckboard Santa Maria Style BBQ since about 2006. I have not been able to try anything other than the Tri-Tip. It is so good that I can't venture to try anything else. Every time I go the Tri-Tip does not disappoint. I don't even put any BBQ sauce on it. It tastes great without BBQ sauce!
Someday I will try the other meats, but not today.
CONS:
Personally speaking, I don't like the potato salad much. But my complaint is about style not quality. I'm sure many folk find it delicious. It is sweeter than my wife's. I like her's better.
The beans are so-so. Again, its a personal preference about style. The quality is fine.
They do not have french fries. :-( Very disappointing.
Today was my first time visiting the new Covina location. The Upland restaurant was nicer and roomier. They only have counter space for about 4 people now so take it to go. We were there about 5 p.m. and the counter, in front of the west facing window, was an inferno!! The A/C could not keep up. TAKE IT TO GO!
The workers are great! Very nice and helpful guys. They even gave samples to some 1st time visitors.
The Upland restaurant is gone. The food is just as good as ever in Covina. The cost is always reasonable. The TRI-TIP ROCKS!!! -

Absolutely the best tri-tip sandwich I ever had! Served on a warm and toasty sourdough roll, along with baked (not fried) french fries. The sauce has a complex flavor that nicely complements the meat, without over powering it. I sampled the beans, which were very good also. The staff is friendly and even though it took about 10 minutes to prepare the food, it was well worth the wait. Now, I don't have to drive up to Morro Bay and hunt down some Santa Maria tri-tip anymore- it's here locally!

While in the area waiting to be seated at another restaurant, we came across Buckboard BBQ. Checked out the menu and decided we would give it a try the next time we had a craving for BBQ.
Well...tonight was the night!
Tri~Tip ~ 5 stars
Baby back ribs ~ 4 stars
Sides ~ 2 stars
Technically, that's more like 3 2/3 stars, but I'm giving them 4 since I am in a generous mood and the tri~tip was excellent.
I had the special of the day ~ full rack of baby back ribs, beans, green salad and bread. Definitely a BIG bang for you buck. Decided to upgrade from the Pinquito beans to Chili since I am not a fan of beans. The Chili has bits of tri~tip with the addition of salsa and peppers. A much better option although a bit pricey for what you get. The ribs had a nice smokey flavor and were very tender. You could tell the ribs were smoked from the smoke ring around the meat and not boiled to death and then slathered with BBQ sauce. Although it would have been nice to have had some additional BBQ sauce on the side. And....what can you say about a green salad with ranch dressing?!?
Hubby had the Wrangler combo ~ your choice of 1 meat, roll, beans and choice of side. He chose the tri~tip which had a nice smokey flavor. I was told everything was made fresh on the premises, but can't say much for the potato salad. Not very exciting.
I'd definitely go back for the tri~tip! Wonder if I can pass on the sides...... -

Buckboard, you made my reception guests SMILE! The hubster and I teamed up way back in January to find the puurrrfect caterers for the backyard boogie we were planning in June. We sampled and agreed, we NEEDED them to hook up our dinner. Diane was great in helping to come up with the menu, and was very accommodating when it came to changes, additions and modifications in the order. The day came, and went problem free. The meats were cooked on site, and went without a single hiccup. The guy doing the BBQ''ing was cool and even qued the veggie burgers and hot dogs that we bought for the guests opting for meatless options and the kids that were in attendance. We will continue to be loyal to their new business spot in Covina, and send shout outs their way when friends are looking for a GREAT catering service!

Growing up in Santa Maria, it's hard for me to walk into a barbeque joint claiming to have Santa Maria style anything. I spoke with the staff there and asked them how they cook the tri-tip. To my surprise, they said in a pit over red oak. They use dry rub on the meat ( not suz-e-q's) and cook the meat to perfection. After getting my tri- tip sandwich, I flipped the bread over and was amazed that they actually dipped the bread in a garlic butter sauce and threw it over the flame. True Santa Maria style!! It is no Sunday Santa Maria broadway special from the locals, but pretty damn close. The prices are very reasonable and the staff are excellent. Try the pepper jack cheese tri tip fries for a real treat!

Had the tri-tip sandwich, which was a *little* overcooked but still tender. It was well seasoned so that you didn't need the sauce, but the sauce was a good compliment. What put it over the top was their bread, a nice hearty roll that held the meat in place, not s soft as to fall apart in a sloppy mess, not so firm that you couldn't tear into it with ease. Good stuff.

Even though this place has a number of menu items, from Day 1, I've stayed with my favorite item: The Pony Express. It's a Santa Maria-style tri-tip sirloin sandwich, served with a side of beans and your choice of potato salad, cole slaw, or tossed salad. Maybe one of these days I'll try something new. Naw. I found something I like and I'll stick with it.
My only knock against the place is that occassionally the meat can be a little tough, but it still tastes pretty darn good.
Closed on Sundays. -

Buckboard catered my party at my business. It was fantastic! All of the guests told me how good it was and that they loved the teriyaki sliders and the chili. Great service and value. Thanks!

I had their lunch special beef brisket. Yummy and their barbeque sauce is addicting. I want to smother it over everything. The brisket was tender and flavorful. I totally inhaled it and wish there was more. The fries were alright. I'd come back for lunch again.
Minus is that there is very little sitting room. We had to order to go and enjoy it back at the dungeon that is work. -

To all you Inland Empire locals: If you haven't tried this place, you have no idea what you're missing! The tri-tip is amazingly tender and the beef ribs are meaty and tremendously flavorful. I've never had better barbeque.
I moved to L.A. seven months ago and I'm still lamenting over my inability to continue my weekly visits to Buckboard's. So, do me a favor and go in my place. -

I found this place in the small center across the street from Red Hill BBQ at the SW corner of Foothill and Grove. I tried the St. Louis style pork ribs, 4 with cole slaw, beans and grilled garlic toast, $9.99.
The ribs were on the small size 4-5 inches long, moist, tender, slightly smokey, slightly salty, good. The sauce on the side was good slightly vinegar-sweet. The slaw and beans are also good. The garlic bread is more accurately grilled bread, I didn't detect any garlic but it was tasty.
Overall the ribs were good but not special. The other Yelpers seemed to like the Tri-tip that is what is next for me. -

Had a BBQ quesedilla that was really good. Tri-tip is as good as any place I've tasted. It's in a dumpy little center and kind of blends in but it's worth looking for it.
We will be trying out the catering service for my son's graduation party. -

I am giving one star for the baby back ribs, other than that the beans were watery, garlic bread dry and flat, beef ribs with really no meat, tri-tip that was dry, and potato salad that had so much relish and black olives in them made this place banned from my family.

Found this place via http://restaurant.com and came to check it out. The place is decent but the food was great! The prices are awesome too! We had a coupon so we saved some money, but with such great prices, a coupon is really not necessary! Would definitely come back!

Deeeeelicious and a huge amount of food. Get the combo plate of tri-tip, beef rib, and roast quarter chicken. Includes garlic bread and potato salad (the latter was a tad mayonaissy for me), beans seemed watery and bland. We split the combo and it was the perfect amount of food. Ribs and chicken were rispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Tri-tip was tender. Restaurant looks like the set of "Ponderosa" or "Petticoat Junction" on the inside, though it's in a strip mall.

its okay. i was expecting better due to high rating from other users. 2 stars
pros: a lot of food for the price, we tried the tri-tip/chicken/beef rib combo
cons: flavors.. couldn't taste any or hardly any spice rub/marinade on the meats.
the garlic bread is bad, the bread itself is decent but tastes like it is topped with old cooking oil. chilli was just okay.
coleslaw.. no good. i'm glad i didn't get the potato salad since i saw a negative comment how its just a lump of mayo, saw someone picking at it and it looked deadly. -

Having lived in Kansas City for 2 years and worked in Texas and Memphis, my standards for BBQ are really high. Since moving to California, i've been sorely disappointed by most every bbq place I've been to. But Buckboard is fantastic. Their tri-tip is excellent - smoky, flavorful, juicy. And their chili is very good as well, opting to use chunks of steak and tri-tip instead of your typical ground beef.

The tri-tip is the best around. Santa maria style so the meat gets a nice smokey flavor. You can sauce it if you like but there is no need. Met the owner, Cam, He has a real passion for BBQ.
