6 reviews for Buck Mulligan's
Last Friday night when I was in Columbus visiting for the weekend, I went with four friends to Buck Mulligans to dinner since we wanted to stay in Gahanna. Overall, it wasn't a bad choice at all. We were seated right away on the second floor and were very fortunate to have two very nice and understanding waiters (some of us might have had a few drinks by that point...). We arrived at the tailend of happy hour and with only a few minutes to spare, the five of us each ordered two drinks to make sure we got HH pricing. I can't remember how much my rum and coke was, but my Bud Light draft was $1.50. Ahhh, it was great to be back in Ohio and see those kind of HH prices!!!!
I had the basket o'crisps as an appetizer and they were delicious. I especially liked the garlic dip that accompanied them. My caesar salad was nothing to write home about, but it was solidly tasty. Two of my friends shared the crab cake appetizer which they thought was fine - again not amazing, but not horrible. The concensus of the group was that the food was solid all around.
My bill with tip for the two happy hour drinks, appetizer, and salad was $13. I'm not sure I would make a special trip to Buck Mulligans to eat, but if I were visiting friends in Gahanna again, I would definitely go back to enjoy some drinks especially at happy hour.
Say goodnight. Buck Mulligans closed earlier this month. Blaming the economy. Word on street is that they were being charged 20,000 a month for rent, but only brining in 200-300 bucks a day in sales.
An Irish name doesn't equal an Irish pub in this instance. I'm not saying the food is bad, because it isn't, but if you are looking for something Irish then you'll have much better luck going to Old Bag of Nails, Claddagh or Fado's.
In Columbus I have been to a few Irish Pubs including Old Bag of Nails, Claddagh, and Buck Mulligan's. Since they are not very vegetarian friendly I chose to get the appetizer sampler which you get to chose 3 different appetizers. I got regular and black bean hummus as well as their pub chips (which were chips, not fries) and the chips came with a delicious sauce to dip them in. The hummus was some of the best that I've had and the chips were great too. We also sampled the fried pickles - which were spears, not chips which doesn't really float my boat, I much rather prefer the chips.
I probably wouldn't go back for a meal but it would be a good place to go after work or for a happy hour. With Old Bag of Nails a few doors down, I would chose this place every time.
If you ask me, there can never be enough authentic Irish Pubs in Columbus!
I've eaten at Buck Mulligan's several times now since it's opened and boy, is it good! From the fine food to the beer selection, you can't go wrong. Despite their struggling new Creekside surroundings, Buck Mulligan's appears to be weathering the storm. It's never too crowded (which is a breath of fresh air compared to Easton) and can easily accommodate and appease any group.
For lunch, I recommend any one of their handcrafted burgers which are all very, very tasty and unique. For dinner, I would recommend either the Shepherd's Pie or the Bangers and Mashed. Either way, you can't go wrong, because they are both Irish staples and they are very good.
I have to share this remarkable story. We visited Buck Mulligan's last night during the Gahanna Christmas Parade and Festivities at Creekside. Naturally, we took advantage of another fabulous meal for an early dinner. We sat right next to the fireplace. What a treat after weathering the cold outside to get a picture with Santa. A family sat down next to our table consisting of grandparents, parents and one child. They seemed very jovial and in the holiday spirit.
Things changed quickly, though, as soon as Grandpa tried his steak entree. He was very upset, because apparently the steak was not cooked to his liking. We first noticed the situation when the Manager arrived at their table. The Manager was very humble and apologetic. He offered several remedies, but to no avail. Grandpa was so upset that he refused to eat anything at all! He rudely rejected the Manager's offers and made quite a scene. Wow...talk about a Scrooge!
Well, needless to say, that put a damper on the holiday spirit. As his family ate away, I could see Grandpa stewing away sporadically adding more negative comments about his experience. I felt sorry for him, but more so for his family. Then, suddenly, the Manager reappeared with a new steak entree cooked exactly the way Grandpa had originally ordered it. Grandpa immediately rejected the Manager's offer. (Uhg, here we go again, I thought.) The Manager insisted and Grandpa began devouring his new piping hot meal. Then the magical words that recaptured the holiday spirit came out of Grandpa's mouth. He said, "Thank you" to the manager and smiles reappeared on everyone's face...even mine! :)
I later complemented that Manager for his heroics. Man, was I impressed! That made my evening. Not only was the food great, so was the service. I strongly urge you to frequent Buck Mulligan's. Whether you like a frosty mug of Smithwick's or a steaming cup of Potato Cheese soup, you will be warmly greeted and respectfully rewarded for visiting Gahanna's finest and most authentic Irish Pub.
Cheers to Buck Mulligan's! Hip, Hip, Hooray!!!
I went into Buck Mulligan's thinking it would be a Gahanna version of Easton's Fado. Yes, it is an Irish themed pub with a catchy name, but it has the advantage of selling really great food.
I loved the paninis. I had the turkey and it was outstanding. Nothing Irish about it, but delicious all the same. My friends dined on the Reuben, which was Irish, and licked her fingers when she was done(Universal?). I also ordered the hummus which was presented to me as "going both ways". Sort of amusing. The both ways in question was two separate types of hummus which to me just means... more hummus. The black bean hummus won over the traditional, but both were very tasty and served with fresh veggies and warm pitas.
The atmosphere was bar like as to be expected. The crowd was older and less rowdy than my local hang outs, but it was kind of a nice break.
I really liked Buck Mulligan's and Creekside Plaza as a whole. After enjoying happy hour at Buck's my friend and I walked around and walked off our pints. Parking is very convenient here, so take a break from Fado and try out Buck's.
