So, now I am a farmer.
    What? You don't believe me?
I grow my own fruits and vegetables.
    Not enough for you?
    Now I have chickens.

I know what you're thinking : "How can a girl with such a sparkling personality and stunningly beautiful physique find time to raise chickens and grow produce?!"

It's true. I've been growing veggies for quite some time now, and have had great success. But they take time to "grow," and I got bored watching them. So, chickens! I'll raise chickens! And play with them and train them to do tricks!

I head to Buck Moore Feed. John is the nicest guy ever, and answered each and every question for me. He pointed out what I needed to start my chicken farming career, including details I had not thought of before.

When one of the chicks seemed ill, I called John up, and he talked me off a ledge.  I was taking it kind of hard. He recommended a product at Buck Moore, and I zipped right over. "Nugget" seems to already be doing better, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

The store is inspiring and adorable, the prices are great, and they have everything you'll need for chickens, bunnies, dogs, and other such fun, furry or feathered little guys.  John gets new chicks on Fridays, and it's taking all my might not to get all of them. Every Friday.

Nugget, Sam, Jencks, and Derpy are all quite happy.  Thanks to John and Buck Moore Feed.  Now, I just need to figure out what to do with a thousand eggs a year.

If you need feed or chicks for your barn yard.  just give them a call you can order certain breed of chicken .
maybe you just need some hen scratch or other wild bird food in bulk.
Its a neighborhood business, Keep it local.

I'm not huge on the ideals of chivalry in everyday life, but I will say that unlike at any big box gardening or hardware store, or even Callahans, at Buck Moore I have never once carried anything heavier than a tomato seedling out to my car. Organic soil, chicken food, Canadea in the 50 lb bags - they've got it hoisted over their shoulders before I can even bend down to pick it up. I LOVE these guys for that alone.

The fact that they are always willing and able to answer any questions happily and extensively doesn't hurt either. We've been fans for years and don't go anywhere else.

We have been coming here for our pet food for over 15 years. The family has been always honesty, friendly and helpful. The cash register alone is enough reason to come here but the rest is bonus.

Been here twice now. They are so nice. Their organic chicken starter feed is $1/lb...same as the other feed stores generic. My baby chicks love the corn

Seven months later, I couldn't be happier!  They are friendly, funny, personable & a wealth of information.  This place & everyone in it is the best!  They'll lay it on the line for you regarding any question you might have.  Great location, too!

I stopped by Buck Moore's yesterday for the first time just to look around at their selection of dog food and get some ideas for building a chicken run. It feels comfortable inside - not fussy, just honest. The guy that helped me (I think his name is Chris) was really patient and went out of his way to tell me about the materials he used for a simple chicken run and nesting box, the best laying chickens and their temperaments, and he was so sincere about wanting to help.

This was a great experience for me. I'm still negotiating on my house, but when I'm ready to get my chicks and supplies, I will definitely go to Buck's. I read they're participating in the "Go Local" program now also, so you can get a discount with that card. (They sell the cards there also - as all Go Local businesses do - if you don't have yours yet.)

Walking into Buck Moore after shopping at callahan's, is like sipping a nice hand crafted beer after drinking a warm bud light.

I was almost startled when the kind gentleman behind the counter said "hello, what can I help you with".  It was like pulling teeth just to get someone to acknowledge my existance at callahan's.  He happily answered all of my questions and we even chit chatted a bit about our chickens.

After I made my purchase, I about fell over when he threw the bag of feed over his shoulder and walked it out to my car for me.  We talked a little bit more in the parking lot when I asked him whether he carried hay.  He said "he will carry hay when he can find a reliable source of organic hay."  I knew I had come to the right place, I love a business that refuses to set aside its values for a couple extra bucks.  Needless to say, I will be back!

I came in on a Tuesday around 5:30 pm.  It was a small store but they use space well.  The parking lot is small.  I parked in the right side next to the small garage to avoid backing out onto North Lamar during rush hour.  There was one or two store people talking to some customers when I came in.  They seemed to be offering a lot of advice.

The store seemed disorganized, but it is so small that walking around to find items is not much trouble.  I did not find duck feed but there was a decent variety of chicken feed.  There were big 50-lb bags of organic feed, too.  You can buy the chicken and dog feed in bulk.  They also sell seeds and garlic.  It is dusty inside.  The southeast corner of the store with the uncleaned empty cages and pesticides did not smell good.

The majority of their products are dog products.  They have a big warehouse in the back of the store.  I saw a bunch of 50-lb bags inside.  The weighing equipment for the bulk feed is very old and makes me feel like I'm at an apothecary in the 1500s.  I wish the prices of the feed were more clearly labeled.  I didn't see any.

Buck Moore is a necessary resource for any member of the growing legion of backyard chicken farmers in Austin.

Get your chick starter, get you chicks, get your heat lamps, etc.

    Convenient northerly alternative to Callahans.

I'm not the type to fall for a feed store, but hot da-yum do I love this place.

We bought three chicks from Callahan's (before Buck Moore began selling 'em) as well as organic starter feed. The pale, chunky feed didn't look right, so we went to Buck Moore to see what their feed looked like. Come to find out Callahan's buys THEIR feed from Buck Moore, and that our feed was old. Our poor chickadees.

Feeling like terrible parents, we dejectedly decided to buy another 10-pound bag of starter feed. The guy there took pity on us and gave us fresh, yellow feed...for free.

These guys know everything under the sun when it comes to chickens. I pointed out the "Chickens for Dummies" book near their badass antique register and the woman behind me said, "Oh, you won't need that book. These guys are a walking 'Chickens for Dummies.'"

    You said it, cowgirl.

PS: Buck Moore is closed Sundays and has limited Saturday hours, so be sure to check their website for hours. Blink and you'll miss the store.

I must say I was majorly disappointed. I was looking for chicks and found their website and although I knew what I was looking for I found it to to be well written with pictures and information about various breeds. All the reviews seemed to rave about this place. I have a feed store one mile from my house but drove 25 miles out of my way to check this place out.
Did they have chicks? Yes. Some. Hidden. On a shelf in the back corner of the store like an afterthought. Only three cages with one empty and one mostly empty. I won't be back. Five stars for the website but only one for the store.

Best prices in town for pet food! They only carry breeder quality foods, so even if they don't have the brand that you're used to they will have the perfect food for your pet.

Every time I go I get a 40lb bag of Diamond dog food, a 30lb bag of Diamond cat food and a 30lb bag of cat litter - all for less than $40.  At Petsmart or Petco, the same amount would cost around $70.

(Diamond is the best pet food I have found. It's natural, healthy...and it wasn't affected by the big poisoned-food scare :-)

I've driven by here a hundred times and finally stopped in today, expecting something completely different.  I was expecting it to be an old time hardware store, and while they do have some garden equipment and lawn care products, the store is almost entirely devoted to animal supplies.  They have an incredible selection of gourmet level dog and cat foods along with feed and supplies for birds, hens, chickens, rabbits, etc, etc, etc.  Lots of neat toys and grooming products as well.  You can even pick up a copy of "Raising Chickens for Dummies" here!   Who knew?!?  I've been trying to find that book for years!

Friendly service and good prices as well.   If you have an animal, stop in sometime and enjoy.

Nice store.  Did you know that you can vaccinate your animals?  We do!
Thanks to the local feed shop our dogs annual 7-way vaccination is over-the-counter.  You still have to see your vet about the rabbies vac because this is registered though the state.
Buck Moore has all your garden, dog, cat, rabbit, guinea, bird......animal and outdoor supplies.  We love it!  very friendly and very helpful.

You walk in, and hear the sound of baby chicks cheeping. There are Jim Shore sculptures. The staff love animals. They are happy to share their knowledge of animals and products. My dogs are thriving on the feed I get from Buck Moore. The Lait de Chevre products are wonderful--that's goat's milk, y'all, and they are for people.

I needed grass seed for my grass-starved indoor kitty, and I really didn't know where to find what I needed but I spied this store on Lamar and decided to give it a whirl.   I hopped out of the car and in thru the door, and I couldn't believe my eyes.   Right here, in the middle of Austin, is this family owned and operated gem where people actually talk and laugh together, and help each other work/talk thru problems and find solutions.

Because the 2 people ahead of me had somewhat complex issues and everyone in the store seemed to be pulling together to solve, I had to wait awhile but I enjoyed every minute of it.   When it came my turn and the sweet gentleman learned that all I needed was a bit of grass seed for the kitty after that long wait, he scooped out the quantity I asked for, gave me some tips on growing it, and then handed it to me and said "no charge - happy Tuesday".

I guarantee whenever I or anyone around me needs any products that this sweet gentleman carries, that's where I'll be!    It's amazing how much great stuff there is in this seemingly smaller store.   Take some time and look around.

The other day, I went to the vet to purchase some food for my dog.  The vet insists that all dogs attending the clinic be on their perscription food.  They recently switched to Royal Canin dog food.  I asked the vet tech how much a 30 lb bag was and she casually responded, "$75".  Now, I love my dog but not THAT much!

I quickly got in my car and started google-ing the best dog food for the money.  Shortly after that, I was on my way to Buck Moore Feed store to pick up a bag of Canidae dog food.  Upon entering the store, I knew I had stumbled upon a gem.  I was quickly greeted and had a lengthy discussion with Buck Moore (or maybe his son) about which food to get for my pooch.  As he was carrying the food to my car (thought I would throw that in there), he grabbed a box of Canidae treats and commented that my dog would love them.  He did!

do you need really excellent food for your dogs and cats?  buck moore's has felidae and canidae - the only food our pets will now eat.  do you need laying pellets or hen scratch for your backyard chickens?  you can buy 50 lb (and probably larger) bags here, in town.  do you need all natural treats and other awesomeness for your pets?  yep, that too.  what about baby chicks?  try like 9 different species!  they also have plants and gifts and random other goodies.  pure awesomeness.  the people that work there are always tremendously helpful (i have never once had to carry a bag out to my own car, even when i try!).  the stuff is awesome and great quality.  it's like a mini-callahan's, right by my house.  i love it.
