They have a great selection of plants here! I went in looking to start an herb garden. I didn't know much about herbs, but one of the employees was so helpful. He educated me on how to care for the plants and which ones would grow best in my area. Buchanan's also had a great deal going when I went in last January. If you were a member (free) you can get 10 herbs for the price of 8. I don't know if that goes on all the time, but it was great! Everyone was so nice there.

Awesome place. Wonderful selection of herbs. Love the friendly cats roaming around.
My favorite part is all the terrarium supplies! I have never seen such a good selection back home in San Diego. I wish I could have packed up this place and taken it home with me! -

Nothing negative about this place, it's pricey but so be it. The selection of their plants, the organic herbs, the pottery, not to mention their beautiful interior decorating items. Staff friendly, great location, super parking, nothing is lacking, except maybe a lovely wine bar out back. Never had a plant die from here and yes the cutest rain boots around. The best in Texas!!!

Ever since Teas Nursery closed down where do I go to look at plants and
flowers?
Well the new spot for me is Buchanan's. So why do you ask was I even here?
Well they actually house a many food trucks throughout the weekend. So I came for the food truck and stayed for the greenery. I have yet to start planting my garden, but that is because I have about 1 sq foot of actually land. But a guy can dream!
I plan on having a house with a decent yard where I can grow all kinds of herbs, vegetables, and flowers! When that time comes I'll know where to go to get whatever I need! But until then I can wander and gaze with amazement and awe! -

My mom goes here regularly so I decided to stop by and get her something for xmas. Absolutely LOVE this place!! So many plant options and so many cute things to put in your garden or home!! It was hard to restrain my spending here!!!

I just really don't know what there isn't to like about this lovely little nursery nestled in the Heights. Though on a slightly smaller scale, it conjures up so many wonderful memories of The Natural Gardener in Austin: nice and knowledgeable staff, a passion for native organic plants, a wide selection, and natural gardening products.
I enjoyed their attention to detail as you can see with my attached pic- for most every plant it seemed, they offered tips on growing and harvesting. In the veggie section they made a handy Texas chart applicable to our area on when is best to plant each type of veggie.
The prices are very reasonable I'd say when it comes to plants-- about $2 per veggie seedling more or less. And! I don't know if it's because of the great amount of care they put into the plants before I bought them or that I just nurture them more because this place left me with so many warm gardening fuzzies, but my plants are still alive for the first time ever! -

I love walking around this place. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Based on their recommendations and tips, I've had TWO plants for a whole year that are still alive!!!! This is huge news.
The only thing I'd say as a negative is they are pricey, but I'll pay for convenience (for some things) since it's a few blocks away from where I live. -

This nursery will always have my heart for personal reasons. But that aside it is, for now, unbelievably a premier garden center. Teas has bit the dust and Buchanan's stands ready to take up the slack. They are so on top of most everything and I haven't met anyone who wasn't eager to help and if they didn't know, find an answer. Their plants are top-notch. I love bringing home plants that I know will thrive. Even paying a bit more is worth not having to replant a week later. All that having been said, if you are planning a day in the Heights you must take a walk through Buchanan's. They have a frequent buyers program so be sure to sign up if you are a serious gardener who falls in love and will be back. You earn dollars for what you spend and believe me it's worth it.

Thank you Buchanan's for being a little slice of heaven, in the middle of a large, crowded city. Your selection of plants, roses, trees and supplies and gifts is the best that I see in Houston now. You make the passing of Wolfe and Teas Nursery a little easier ;) Your "Garden Guru' is a great idea and the Food Truck with Patio tables and chairs are wonderful. Hope your sales this Spring and Summer are fabulous, as it would really be tragic to see you leave us as well. Blessings~

I enjoyed checking out the unique plants here. Most had signs explaining what they were and suggested care guidelines.
(Though as an out of practice gardener, I need a little help and was somewhat underwhelmed with the service, circling the entire grounds twice before finding an employee.)
I love the water fountain doo-hickeys they have set up and may some day build one myself. I didn't find what I really wanted (an aloe vera plant) but I had fun. (Except for driving on the ripped up 11th street. You can get the store, just drive through the orange barrels.) -
Review from Karen S.
A great local plant shop in the Heights, on the corner of 11th and Oxford.
They carry a wide variety of native plants, which is of course what you should be planting around here for sustainability reasons.
I love just strolling through the place. I feel like I'm walking through someone's garden. So much more relaxing and botanically inspiring than pushing a cart down the aisles at a big box home improvement store.
They have plenty of other stuff that I have trouble finding elsewhere like a wide selection of attractive planters, for example. There's a lot of things you can use to throw a garden party on the inside--plates, candles, and other cool kitschy stuff. A small bookstore as well. Though sometimes linking it to gardening is a stretch. It's all fun, though, and gives the non-gardeners/kids in your group something to do.
They aren't cheap. But then again, they don't sell a ton of cheap stuff. There are plenty of other places that do. -
Review from Linh N.
This is my favorite plant store in Houston. They seem to have everything and then some. The variety of plants Buchanan's offers is impressive. They stock with the Houston climate in mind, so it's not some exotic plant that you fall in love with at the plant store, but sadly discover can only exist at the plant store because it's not actually conducive to Houston's climate and your amateur/novice, and ahem, neglectful gardener ways. You can actually invest in a plant here and potentially have it grow and flourish for years to come.
Unlike buying your plants at the red top circus plant store or Home Depot, there are not rows and rows of mums or boring ground cover. They've recently expanded, so you can meander throughout the grounds, pleasantly browsing and find inspiration for shooshing up your houseplants or landscaping your yard.
The staff here is also very helpful and well-informed. If they can't identify a plant or flower, they will find someone who will.
In all, highly recommended for all types of gardeners! -

This is a wonderful store with a wide variety of quality plants. My plants from Buchanan's typically do better than those from Hope Depot etc. Buchanan's has a knowledgeable staff, but you have to go around looking for them as they do not actively seek out patrons in need. Once you find them, however, they can basically tell you anything that you need to know.
The gift shop "Buchanan's Bungalow" is completely wonderful. The staff in this section of the business is quite helpful. You can find gifts for anyone on your list, it really is a great find. I love perusing the gift shop on a Saturday... and I don't mind finding a new herb for my garden, either. -

The last time I went to Buchanan's must have been 4 years ago or more. Upon entering, the place looked a lot different. It no longer felt cramped.
I looked for tropicals since they are least likely to be killed by me. I had found this really strange looking plant with like yellow, orange, and green and placed in my cart. I left the cart and browsed the gift shop to come back to find the plant gone!
Everything else was there except for that one plant! I couldn't believe it.
Even worse, there were no others.
I looked around to see if I could find the plant snatcher with no luck. I still found a nice plant, but it was nothing like the first one.
Maybe someone thought the cart was abandoned. Who knows. Either way i'm coming back, but next time I will watch my stuff! -

I loved my first visit to Buchanan's, and I'll be back soon for more plants! We picked up three adorable native plants - it was hard to choose from their wide selection, but since everything was sectioned off by light requirements (and my balcony is a sunless black hole), we were confident in our final choices. If we had a yard, it's possible that several perfect plant stands would have come home as well.
We also brought home some ladybugs to tackle our aphid problem. I'm sure there are other Houston stores that sell friendly bugs for your garden, but Buchanan's has a good selection. We were sad to depart without some of their beautiful locally-made pottery, but I worry that my balcony may separate from the building if I overload it....
Definitely worth a browse if you're over in the Heights - the 11st street spot is really convenient if you need a quick plant fix. -

Love love love visiting this place! not a lot of quantity but plenty of variety! and like another yelper, QUALITY! their plant people know their stuff and how to help you with any plant questions. We get all of our plants from here and it's always a delight to stroll through the whole place and enjoy the different kind of plants they have.
There are also some lazy cats you might find lolling around. Last time we found one sleeping in one of those boxes you carry your plants in. It was on its back. And yes, it was a fat cat. Delightful.
Only bad thing is they are pricey but I'm guessing that comes with the quality.
Visit the bungalow gift shop! super cute :)
I also like how their plants are native and chosen for Houston weather.
I never really thought I could grow anything in Houston but Buchanan's changed my mind :D
Also, every saturday I think the heights home tour loads their buses and starts their tour from their parking lot :P -

Great place, good plants, good selection, very knowledgeable. Every time I go, I wind up gaining some new information or tricks of the trade. My garden (vegetables/herbs) have been healthy and thriving even in the drought conditions, always quick on the recommendations, can't thank them enough for the "Hasta gro" suggestion, my scotch bonnet plant is huge and the peppers are neon orange and green. All in all a great addition to the area, while not the cheapest the value is more than worth it, though I wish they'd put the 18.5 gallon plastic containers back on sale.. :) Thanks for being there, highly recommended, good people too, and Good Dog is there on the weekends (drool).. :)

Do not go to Home Depot or Lowe's for plants. Come here! The quality is much better and the prices are also better.

If I could live at this nursery, I would.
The pottery is beautiful and the bungalow gift shop has something for everyone. This past Christmas, they had a wonderful variety of ornaments and decorations. Not to mention hot chocolate and cookies for visitors!
Can't wait to see what the spring will bring. -

I heart Buchanan's! I come here to buy herbs for my balcony. The staff is usually very helpful and they have a good variety. Their store is very large and even includes an indoor orchid area.

Our FAVORITE plant shop and nursery in Houston. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff, lots of varieties of interesting plants. Highly recommend it! Only downside is that it can be a bit pricier than other nurseries, but the scenery in the store alone is worth a little extra money.

This is not the biggest nursery there is, but I love that it's by my house and that they carry the best selection of plants! Unlike Cornelius, I was able to find someone to help me because I'm not a gardener by any means. She basically walked me throughout the entire nursery pointing out plants I'd be interested in. I ended up with a couple of really good geraniums. Afterwards, I went to Lowe's just to compare quality, and I'm sooo glad I went to Buchanan's first! Buchanan's doesn't have a large quantity, but you can bet that they have the best quality!

Going native is one of my favorite things to do, but don't worry you will not catch me in a loin cloth at Buchanan's, it would scare the indigenous life forms away. Many of them are pretty, but judging by their driving skills, not too smart and they are main reason the place does not get five stars, as dodging them in the parking lot and having to avoid them in the nursery as they seem to cluster at choke points while on the phone, is wearying.
The staff themselves are unfailingly polite, knowledgeable and supremely patient, and are to be commended for maintaining their demeanor throughout the searing summer season.
Selection and quality are quite good for such a small place, and their willingness to order anything that you cannot find, harks back to that lost art of customer service.
Their only real failing, is that they can be twice the price of exactly the same plant around the corner at Joshua's.
Worth a visit and take some purchasing power, as you will find all kinds of things you didn't know you really needed. -

A great resource for many Houston native plants. They have a variety of garden supplies a decor ranging from inexpensive to expensive. We came here to set up our herb garden because we found they had the great looking planters for the price and a wide range of herbs.

My husband and I are new to gardening so we can't really compare this nursery to many others since this is the only one we've really visited. We like, however, that it's close to home, the inventory is large, and the employees are friendly and helpful. Well, that could just be because we don't know jack about plants so everyone and their mama seemed more knowledgeable than us. We've bought all sorts of herbs here earlier this year (cilantro, rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley) along with broccoli, a hydrangea which is next to dead, and some aureas that have all but died after the January frost. In February, we bought roma tomatoes, Italian and Thai basils, and dwarfed lemon and lime trees. we've returned on numerous occasions with leaves extracted from our dying plants, and they were able to diagnose and offer "first aid." I'm sure the stuff here isn't cheap, but it's not breaking our bank. We joined their rewards program and have gotten discounts applied almost each time we shop. Now if only I could get someone to just maintain our garden for us...

This is just a really pretty place to walk around. Even if I don't find exactly the plant I was looking for, I never leave empty handed. I like the gardener's reward points and specials too. They have expanded/redesigned the gift shop space in the house and have lots of great gifts.

Disappointing that their return policy is 7 days for return or credit. This is not long enough to plant the plant and know if it will thrive or not.
