This is a great "dive" coffee place. They serve the best fresh bagels every morning, big and chewy, but sell out early... I usually don't expect to find any on a busy morning after 11ish. This is my favorite LOX BAGEL I have ever found!! Tons of fresh lox. I usually ask for light on the cream cheese though because they aren't reserved about their spreading.

They have a pretty good tea selection, tasty coffee blends, and a slew of specialty coffee and tea drinks ranging from regular lattes and macchiatos to dessert-like sweet concoctions names after candy bars like the snickers and the milky way - loads of originality you can't find at any other coffee shop.

This place can get pretty busy, especially around CU Boulder test time, when it is impossible to find a seat. Otherwise, its a great place to get free wifi and even a nice patio seat outside where you can enjoy some of the best people watching on the hill.

Nice folks, good coffee. A bit cramped and crowded in the winter when the snow outside drives everybody in for a warm cup o' joe. Still better service and coffee than some campus places.

    Short & sweet:

    Service: 3
    Coffee: 3
    Wait time: 4
    Price: 4
    Cleanliness of bathroom: 3
    Wi-fi: free!

Nothing wrong with Buchanan's, but 99% of the time, it's crowded. A prime location on the Hill, I'm sure business is great. And the Americano was all right (I think I prefer Espresso Roma's). The atmosphere is no good for studying: it's loud and people are constantly walking about.

If you want a cup of coffee before walking onto campus, this might be for you. I can't guarantee that it would be served to you quickly (I imagine there's frantic-college-students-traffic in the morning and afternoon) but it's convenient if you have 15 minutes to spare.

Yes, Buchanan's Coffee Pub is a standard for students looking to caffeine before class, tests, concerts on the hill, whatever. Unfortunately, their captive audience of cracked-out grad students seem to be willing to pay a premium for coffee that's -- well -- mediocre, service that's slow, and tables that are seldom clean.

Yet somehow, I still like this place.

It's so funny that I have so few Boulder reviews considering Boulder was where I lived first when I moved to Colorado - and I lived there for several years. Ah well, that was before I knew about the awesomeness that is Yelp and I'm not much of a retro-reveiewer. However, I was recently in Boulder for a bridal shower and spend the better part of an afternoon hanging out in Buchanan's doing work.

It was a great spot to do this as they have all my major needs covered - coffee, food, and free Wi-Fi. Buchanan's is rarely overly crowded and people don't mind sharing tables if it is. They don't have a ton to offer in the food department - mostly bagels and baked goods so if you want proper sustenance you'd be better off at one of the Pearl Street coffee houses I bet. But, I definitely enjoyed my hours here on this visit and all my previous ones back in my Boulder-dwelling days.

We were killing some time after the basketball game and before dinner. I noticed a lot of students here studying. Must be a good coffee shop, right? My husband got a hot chocolate and I ordered a decaf, skinny mocha. I don't process caffeine very well and will usually feel nauseated afterwards. The decaf still has some caffeine, but I usually do ok. The chocolate was pretty mild, because I could barely taste it. I probably should have gotten a vanilla latte. I think my husband enjoyed his hot chocolate. They do have an extensive display case with baked goods. The blueberry scones looked good. So did the chocolate chip cookies. They also had a variety of biscotti.

In college towns, there are a lot of coffee shops. Boulder is no different. I would venture to guess there are some better coffee shops than this. But if you want convenience and close to campus, Buchanan's will suffice.

The location on The Hill is very convenient. This place is always hopping with college folk, and sometimes it's hard to find a table. The space is pretty cramped. However, the service is friendly and fast. What can I say? It's your average coffee-shop. I second what another reviewer said--it's just a big boring.

I wish they were 24-hours--I could really get on board with that! Boulder has no 24-hour cafes (and, no, Denny's doesn't count).

Well naturally lit coffee shop that is destined for homework.  Now I can't guarantee that the homework will be completed.  The espresso drinks are strong, and they are creative with the choice on the menu.  the pastries look excellent, and the also have other snackies to purchase.

I love coming here when I'm in the area.  A great place to chitchat and gossip with one to 4 people.

I'm gonna have to differ with my man Vince about Buchanan's, this is not your typical coffee shop.

It's independent! ("So what?" I hear you think, cynical reader. Okay, I'll tell ya!)

No burnt Starbuck's beans, and the vaguely annoying people who patronize Starbuck's. Only real coffee is sold here.

Real atmosphere. Huge windows and a patio over looking the hill and the mountains. Honest to god velvet couches that didn't come out of the Starbuck's homogenizing warehouse.

A nice mix of real people. Heavy on the studious students.

Several different varieties of non-coffee drinks: 2 kinds of Ghirardelli hot chocolate, steamers, Italian sodas, smoothies and a wide selection of teas.

    Excellent and inexpensive pastries.

    Free Wi-Fi.

My favorite time to come to Buchanan's is early in the winter when we're all still fascinated by the beautiful magical quality of falling snow. Get a cup of hot chocolate, sit next to the windows, and enjoy the weather and the comfort of a hot drink.

One of Boulder's classic coffee shops. A place where you can find students, transients and CU professors mingling together. (No kidding, I had a philosophy prof who said if we needed to see her outside of office hours we would likely find her at Buchanan's.) It's also connected to the city's best piercing place, K&K, which is a plus.

Great atmosphere and a colorful location make this is a place of legend (can't complain about being across from the Sink), but at the end of the day it's your typical coffee shop. But, bonus points for location and color.

Young and old, professorial and primitive, studious and slackin' -- an eclectic group of java jonesers descends on this former cycle shop for the strong java and the decidedly laid-back, anti-chain vibe. It's true: the storefront windows and outdoor seating offer up a dazzling view of the Flatirons.

A good selection of tea and juices (and dig the chai, mon!) are on hand, as well. Baked goods include the usual cookies, bagels, croissants, yada yada yada.

I agree with the other Yelper who said the coffee's better at Cafe Roma, but, man, you can't beat Buchanan's VIEW! I mean, score a triple-shot latte, then sit back and relax and watch the mountain climbers work their ropes. It's virtually THAT close.

SOLID!  One thing that is amazing is that it works as a proper study, get things done area, but they also actually serve incredibly good coffee.

One thing about SF with WiFi Cafes... they either sell the coffee, or the wifi, but rarely come together in a joyous combination.  In this case... it does.

    Meh.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with this place, per se. But something about it fails to inspire me. The coffee is fine, there's plenty of plugs
But it's also a bit boring. It feels cramped as well...

I'm sitting here right now and enjoying myself enough to come back but nothing special really.

Kind of a run of the mill coffee shop. It's usually less crowded than the Laughing Goat, always clean, friendly staff, and convenient location. I come in here pretty often when I have classes on the hill side of campus for a quick cup of coffee, or to study and use the wi-fi on the patio.

    Pros: Convenience, friendliness, bagels... hmmmm
Cons: Not exactly the best coffee, but still a drinkable cupful of caffeine if that's what you are looking for between classes!

The coffee is definitely not the best, but the environment, staff, and patrons are what kept me coming back to this place. Most of their customers are college students (not kids) who discuss class materials, work on homework, etc. Occasionally you might see a girl or two talking louder than usual but that's what you get for going to a coffee shop literally across the street from CU campus.

I have seen this coffee shop through multiple owners, and the new one is amazing. Things are clean, the staff is sincerely friendly and the coffee is consistently strong without being bitter. They also have Moe's bagels that they can make into a fabulous bagel sammich for ya. Lox? Egg? Bacon? Your choice. Plus, it is mere steps from the barbershop that I work at. An easy decision for me to head on down. Friendly faces, wifi and a patio. What could be better?

Buchanan's is my favorite coffee spot in Boulder.  The food and coffee are both great, the owner is almost always there in the mornings, and the wi-fi has yet to fail on me, unlike at Brewing Market.  Buchanan's is also a great place to meet up with people for interviews and such.

Right off broadway with easy parking and delicious snacks. Can't really go wrong. I love their bagel with lox special - lots of lox. It's not the cheapest place I've ever been, but hey:  It's Boulder. Lots of college kids, which can be good or bad but it's never boring.

A very disappointing cafe.  The atmosphere is amazingly stark with some faux "derelict" brick and cliche college dorm art added to the walls for an attempt at legitimacy.  The vibe is so meek you'll be gulping your coffee in order to flee for some respite on the streets of The Hill.  As for the coffee, you could not make a more average, unremarkable brew.  Its not awful but certainly not something that you are actually enjoying.  The only redeeming quality of this cafe may be all the homework you will actually get done instead of trying to survive the beige and green walls of Buchanan's.

Great place to study and good pastries but I'll pass on the coffee.  Go up a block to Espresso Roma for that.  If you're a tea person this place is good too.

Above all else though, this is a great study place.  Big windows, a great space, free wi-fi, and a nice little patio when the weather is nice.

All in all, a nice spot.  But if you just want coffee, go elsewhere.

An independent coffee shop on the hill near the CU Boulder campus. Well lit with a nice outdoor patio. Often difficult to find a seat as this is definitely a place students camp to do their homework. The coffee itself is just OK, which is why I took off two stars. If you're a coffee shop, you've got to serve great coffee, even if you do have a stellar atomosphere.

While I am tempted to give this a good review solely because it's right by CU Boulder and it's not Starbucks, I personally think that anyone would be better off going to Roma's or even to Pearl Street for some caffeine. Their foofy drinks are too foofy, coffee sucks, and they always "accidentally" overcharge me- it puts me in the awkward position of asking for money back (shouldn't happen so often!). But the plus is that it's right by Guggenheim/Econ buildings at CU and it is an independent place to grab some coffee between classes!

A must for your morning coffee and treats on the Hill. Wifi and people watching are the fringes. Across from The Half Fast Subs and easy lot or street parking. Nothing against Starbucks, they only wish they had this location. The owner takes your order, a true sign of a business well run.

Cool atmosphere for a university coffee shop.  Plenty of tables, and free wifi is available.  Despite one annoying cell phone conversation everybody overheard (sounded like a break-up), it was generally a chatty location for the students in the area.  If you want a more comfortable chair/sofa that you'd find at some other coffee shops, this is not the place for you.

No review of Buchanan's? God, that's just not right. This is the coffee shop that other coffee shops should take notice of and desperately try to copy, but never quite make it. The staff is cool and the drinks are delicious - the fruit smoothies are thick and sweet and the white hot chocolate is like someone distilled the clouds of heaven into a savory winter treat. They offer free wi-fi with purchase, the only drawback being sometimes it's hard to find an outlet. This place was even better when it had the upstairs room, because it was a great, home-y lounge in which to study for finals, but I think they've rented that to a business now. Still, you can't beat it for going with a study group, hanging out with a friend or sitting on the porch in spring, watching people cross Broadway from the uni to the Hill.
