I'm sometimes weary of privately owned joints - sometimes they have poor ingredients or they just do a lot of things wrong.
However this place is great! I instantly fell in love with it and would HIGHLY recommend their Cheesy Italian Beef with their homemade giardiniera and mozz. Plus who can beat a place that has Green River on-tap! Definitely will be going back here! -

Stopped by Bub's Subs twice in two days. First stop was lunch. Looked over the menu and stopped when I saw Mortadella on The Godfather. The sandwich had a great balance of Italian meats, cheese and veggies. The bread was the best part. Crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of chew. Not too tough, but not that spongy stuff they serve at Subway.
I had a chance to chat with Dominic (the owner) and get more insight into his approach. We talked further about how he makes his Italian Beef. Was glad to hear he follows a process I've learned about years earlier from my father in law. He doesn't let the beef sit in the aus jus and cook out. Just a quick dip to heat it up and right onto the roll.
Dominic and his team are very approachable and were open to discuss how they make the sandwiches. The restaurant is very simple and clean.
Couldn't resist and came back the next day to try the beef. Great sandwich. Need to try the turkey next. -

QUICKIE: GO here for the BIGGEST ITALIAN sub on the best homemade Loaf....DELICIOUS!
LONG VERSION:
Went here for a sub finally...
got the "spiel";
homemade Italian loaf...I'd Say about 16" for and XL or half of that for the "reg" sub HUGE LOAVES....and delicious...
As I ran down the menu...I noticed most of the sandwiches have Italian Charcuterie, Hot Capy (my personal fav) Mortadella, Salami, pepperoni, even Krakus polish ham..I'm in heaven....
I ordered an XL...Godfather, I think...but noticing it didn't have pepperoni or ham on it...I asked the chef if he could put them both on it making this sandwich a Supreme!!!
"No Problem" he says...as he proceeds to put HUGE whole slices of Krakus Ham, 4 to be exact, over 6 monster size pepperonis, and basically the same amount of all the other cold cuts they offer...with provolone cheese....not a skimpy sandwich!
I finish my sub in typical subway fashion, veggies, mayo, mustard, oil & vinegar, spices...
I took it to go...skipped beverages, but grabbed 2 bags of chips...they have my favorite the cheddar sour cream Ruffles... out the door for $16....
This sub rocked...it was delicious...I want another...I want to force feed my friends who don't eat pork one of these sandwiches... i want them to taste the glory that is hot capicola....
I don't feel its over priced...it's literally twice the sandwich of jimmy johns, and even if i added drinks, and gave half of my sub away... you would still have two 8" subs, 2 bags of chips, and two drinks for around $20... I have gotten far less at Alg sub shop, for $25...sorry A.S.S.
I think I am going back again today...
okay, the negatives... actually none really...they could put up some decorations, maybe a TV...pipe in some music...I know its "Italian" all the way here...but if you aren't interested in an Italian beef or a salami sub...I don't think there were many options outside of those and their variations...
let me double check on that....awe heck who needs options...I might just ask for a quadruple capicola sub, next time I'm there... :) -

Update. Last night we performed a taste-test with 3 other sub-shops. Bub's Sub's, PotBelly's, Firehouse and Jersey Mike's. We sampled what we thought were each outfits best sub. It was extremely difficult to conclude which one has the best product, but I will tell you that Bub's Sub's and PotBelly's were the top two. I love the 'Wreck' from PotBelly's but I have to give it to Bub's as he makes his Giardiera (sp?) from scratch. And it is fantastic!!! Nice job Bub's.

Bread is the most important component to a great sandwich, at least in my world. Bubs certainly delivers freshly baked bread, but then adds the best and freshest ingredients for an incredible tasting sammy.
I stopped in one day to pick up lunch for my Mom and I. I asked for some suggestions and asked for some suggestions since I was a newbie. I ordered two footlongs- don't judge, I couldn't decide!!! With my eyes much bigger than my stomach, I ordered the Godfather and the Firebird. In one word: amazing.
The firebird was a spicy little number with homemade chipotle sauce, pepper jack cheese, turkey, Italian Capicola all nestled in between that soft and chewy bread. It would have been awesome as is, but then they toasted it all warm and melty. Hot damn it was good. The Godfather incorporated classic Italian meats and cheeses: mortadella, that yummy capicola, Genoa Salami, and provolone. I also got a side of the homemade giardiniera. Again, this was absolutely delicious, and would most definitely order again.
Dom, the owner is a former H.S. classmate of mine. He takes a lot of pride in his business. He makes a good portion of the ingredients in-house from the sauces, oven roasted turkey, and I believe, that oh-so-yummy bread. The result- happy and full customers.
I'll def be back soon. Oh, and don't worry, I didn't eat both subs in one sitting. (However, if I could I totally would.) Eat at Bubs! -

We have been to Bubs Subs several times in the past couple months. The food is phenomenal.
The El Nino is spicy good! The Three Amigos is fantastic! The beef sandwich is one of the best! And Bubs has a kids menu, which is not something that is often seen at a Sub Shop.
The staff is absolutely wonderful! And the bathrooms are super clean!
I have been telling everyone I know to check out Bubs Subs! -
Review from Doug M.
Been here twice now and am duly impressed with the level of service and the freshness of the ingredients. I had the Wise Guy sandwich which is very tasty. In addition to many cold subs, they offer several hot ones, including Italian beef. The different levels of flavors in my sandwich were incredible. The oil/vinegar addition really makes the sandwich.
While a little on the pricey side, Bub's has thrown down the gauntlet in the suburban sub shop world. Let's see how many take up the challenge and raise their bar too. -
Review from Thomas C.
Highlights: Ordered an El Nino.. Its a unbelievably tasty beef sandwich with pepper jack cheese, tapatio brand hot sauce, Chipotle Mayo and the best homemade HOT giardinera around. This sandwich begs you for another bite. This beef is labeled spicy so its going to give you a little sandwich kiss that lasts a few seconds longer.
While visiting, we saw a variety of subs, grinders and beefs made and they all looked delicious. This is my new go to place!
Lowlights... NONE!Listed in: How's About a Sammich??

Stopped in the other day to try the newest Sandwich shop in the area. Dom and his boys were very helpful in helping me decide what to have on my first visit. I was in the mood for an Italian sandwich, but the boys kept telling me how great the beef was. What is a man to do? ORDER BOTH! Went with two small (or regulars they call them) subs and went with the Cheesy Beef and the Godfather.
The Italian Beef was well seasoned, and could rival anyone in the area. Very tender and juicy beef. Cheese oozing from the sandwich (check the picture) but not overwhelming. Can't wait to go back and try the other beefs!
Italian came with your choice of toppings, and a homemade giardiniera which was quite good for being homemade. Loved the combination of meats on the sandwich, in this case Mortadella, Capicola, and Salami.
What I especially loved about my sandwiches was the bread. Seems to me that someone spent a lot of time and trial and error to get their bread perfect. Soft and chewy on the inside, with just enough crunch on the outside to hold the sandwich together perfectly. Bread is such an important component to a sandwich, that I can't believe more places don't pay more attention to it. Others should take note of Bub's bread. It's that good!
All in all, I was very pleased with my visit. I really like the menu as there are sandwiches on there that have combos I haven't seen before. This will draw me back multiple times! Staff was very friendly. Atmosphere wasn't much, but seriously, it's a sandwich shop. I don't really care about the atmosphere, just keep it clean. And they do.
See you soon Bub! -

Think Potbellys with better meat, bread, toppings and choices. I tried the club sandwich and was very happy. The bread had a great crunch (after toasting). The meat was fresh. The lettuce was green (not yellow or brown). The guys behind the counter were working fast but still smiled when they took my order and asked how my sandwich was when I was returning my tray. I will definately be bringing the hubby since they have a ton on italian meats and spicier items which he will love.

I was surprised at how good the beef sandwich was. It was definitely worth the drive. I figured these other reviews were done by friends, which for some reason is what I often think about places with a small number of reviews. I was wrong. I know the place is fairly new, which is why there are not many reviews. No shit, you're probably saying.
I talked to the owner of this place, a good guy, and he reminds me of myself, a "Foodie". Like me, he can often tell you what restaurant you are talking about if you can't remember the name, or recommend a great restaurant for a particular type of food you are looking for. He genuinely cares about the food he serves and his customers.
I will be back for the beef and to try other sandwiches. -

Bubs makes a good sandwich. They take the bread seriously, which is a very big deal to me. It was super-fresh, right out of the oven, with a nice crunchy crust. The meat and cheese was excellent looking and tasting, as well.
It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'll surely visit again when I'm on that stretch of Randall. -
Review from FOOD A.

Finally, a kick butt sub shop in the area. Bub's cuts all their own meats and cheeses in house, makes their own Italian beef and best of all bakes their own bread. The bread is downright awesome; nice crust, tender interior, not too chewy it doesn't overwhelm the sandwich fillings. Speaking of which, these subs are simply overflowing with the freshest meats, cheeses, toppings, spreads and HOMEMADE giardinara. Like the other ingredients made in house, the giardinara is superb. It is fresh tasting, crunchy, acidic and not overpoweringly spicy. It's vinegar and spice is able to cut through the richness of the bread and the unctuousness of the meats and cheeses. Next time I am in I plan to see if I can buy some to keep in my fridge.
Now the only reason I have rated Bubs with 4 stars instead of 5 is that I haven't had the opportunity to sample more of their offerings. After I try more of their sandwiches (which I plan to do soon), I will update this review and I fully expect the rating to go from 4 to 5 stars.
The owner is very cool and easy to talk to. He strikes me as a real food guy who just loves making great simple and damn tasty sandwiches. I highly recommend this place and a quick chat with the owner (sorry I forgot his name). -

2 out of 3 isn't so bad. First two times we ordered we were shocked how good the subs were, but then the fall... Last time the food was terrible The beefs were dry and the the Italian was tasteless. The bread at all times was great so perhaps it was just an off day for the Bubs Subs crew.

I've heard about this place from others and I was excited to try it. The people were great. They were very informative, kind, helpful and they were able to answer my questions. I had the mambbo italiano, it's usually served cold, but I had it toasted, with lettuce, olives, onions, peppers, pickles and gardinera (which looked homemade, not sure, but so yummy). I felt that the meat was not as flavorful. I tasted the condiments rather than the actual meat. I will definitely try this place again to get more experience from it.

Have been to Bubs now over a dozen times and it just keeps getting better and better. Every sub i have tried has been amazing, the Italian beef is AMAZING in every form as well.
It's sad that there are several reviews that the system marked as spam that are REAL reviews. I do NOT know the owner, have never met him. I have only spoken to him a few times that i have been there. He is definitely a food junkie like myself.
Believe the hype, this place is that good!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Went there for the first time today.... had the El nino. Delicious! Staff is super duper friendly!!!!!!! I WILL BE BACK to try something with turkey. Definitely a manly super beef fill your belly type of place. Only thing I would request is maybe a whole grain bread or something a little lighter to watch my girlish figure... lol

Went in again and decided to try something other than the Italian Beef. It's so hard, since the beef is so good. I tried the Firebird this time. Which is a Turkey Sub toasted oh course with homemade chipotle mayo. Loved it! Although the beef sandwiches are my favs!

This place is outstanding. It is about time the Algonquin/Crystal Lake area got a non chain sub place with tasty good. The bread is home made and so good. The ItalIan beef is second to none. What separates this place from most is the quality of the food. Everything is top notch from Krakus ham to real Wisconsin American cheese. There are no shortcuts taken. If you are someone that enjoys a good sub and is tired of the cheap ingredients from the big chains go check out Bubs.

My wife and I went here after reading the good reviews. We split a large beef sandwich and we were both full from it. The beef sandwich is very good, I would recommend getting the giardiniera for the sandwich - it is really good.
We felt the prices were a bit high, but the sandwich was very tasty.
Hopefully the owner hires some more help, because when the crowd picks up at lunchtime, the wait can get long.
The decor is bland and not very inviting, which I would assume will get better as the business ages.
All in all, I am excited to go back and try another sandwich. I do not think you will be disappointed with this place. -

I've been back several times since my first review. The quality and consistancy of their sandwiches is awesome. Every visit is like the last. Great food and service! I have had three of their menu items and can't stop going back until I have tried them all. Then I will have to start all over again!

I have been to Bubs Subs for about half a dozen times now and each time the quality of their food has been right on. I have had my share of italian beef sandwiches in my life. I used to think that portillos was the beef sandwich that all others should be judged on. Well now I have found a place that is not only equal but is actually better. The name of the sub is the El Nino. It comes with a chipotle mayo and homemade giardinera which is by far the best I have ever had. The owner Dom is super friendly and seems to always be there. This is the type of establishment that you can't help but root for since you can see how passionate the owner is of putting out a delicious quality homemade product. Do yourself a favor and go to Bubs Subs. You won't regret it.

Several months ago I saw the sign in the window of the place announcing a new sub shop, and anxiously stalked the building until it opened. I've been a regular here since then. I profess to be a huge fan of a good sandwich, and Bub's really hits that spot. As far as comparing to the competition, there really is none. There are a few chain sub shops around, and a couple do a decent job, but can't compare to what Bub's is offering. Bub's stands alone in quality ingredients and freshness. Everything I've had there was delicious. The bread... THE BREAD! In a word, awesome. The guy makes his own bread, roasts his own beef and turkey. The giardinara is homemade and delicious. The ingredients of each sandwich have been carefully selected, and the balance of all the ingredients is perfect. The 'regular" sized sandwich is plenty for my healthy appetite. The owner Dominick is very personable and has an obvious passion for food and the success of his business. He treats averyone that comes in as a friend and wants to make sure you come back. That goes a long way these days. If you love a good sandwich and appreciate fresh, quality ingredients, check out Bub's Subs.
