You always remember your first.
This is the first great BBQ place I went to back in the UMass Amherst day. I love this place....you have got to try it. Nothing like the delicious sausages, pulled pork, brisket, pitcher of cold beer and unlimited ridiculous sides. Only Bubs can cut up a potpourri of assorted vegetables and put them in tub of hot water to create a simple rememberable soup, it's the small details you remember here, whether it be the soup, roll of paper towel on the table or the loaves of french bread resting on the cutting board with a tub of butter. Did I mention that the tub of butter has a rubber spatula planted inside to spread your butter.
Seriously , give this place a try when your in the area and hit up the jukebox, you won't be disappointed.
I love BBQ - and what I love about this place is the Bar-B-Que sign more than the actual BBQ - so sad.
I wanted to love it, seriously. I mean, it had all these awards all over the walls (along with Red Sox stuff) but I don't know who came and ate there. It was nothing special. One of the good things they did have was unlimited sides - both hot and cold but the collard greens tasted like they used clam sauce in it (uhhhh what's THAT all about) and the spicy rice wasn't so spicy.
I contemplated the deep-fried twinkie but after trying to swallow down the dry spare ribs - and the extra salty kilbasa - I wasn't in the mood to stay around.
I miss Bubs. Give me a pitcher of steel rail and some baby back ribs from Bubs and sit me on their outdoor picnic tables as the sun goes down on a warm summer evening and I am a happy camper. Grab some potato salad and bread from the unlimited sides-bar, and maybe an app of alligator tail and you've got it made. It's so good I may just have to engineer a reason to make a stop here the next time I head back to Massachusetts.
May is apparently National BBQ month, and if I had my way I'd be celebrating here.
Endless sides is a plus, but the pulled prok sang could have used a bit more bulk
My buddy and I were out on the bikes today trying to get some riding in while the weather was good. When we got to Conway we both were hungry and he knew of this place, but hadn't tried it. It had come highly recommended.
We arrived just after they opened so we were able to order quickly. The menu is what you would expect for a BBQ joint. We both went with the Baby Back Ribs. With that you got to eat from the hot and cold bars. A bunch of good sides that went right along with the menu. I almost felt like I was at a southern picnic.
Ribs came up pretty quick. They were not swimming in BBQ which I was pleased with. Just enough on top to be messy, but not need a shower after I was done. There was also a dry rub on the meat. The flavor of the sauce was tangy sweet and good! Overall great meal!
I loved the fact that it had rolls of paper towels right on the tables along with a bottle of hot sauce. Great atmosphere.
By the time we were done it was noon and the people start rolling in (many of them on motorcycles). It seems to be a destination spot. It will be added as one to my list!
I am giving it a star because of the fact I am amazed it is still in business! Honestly it is not barbeque. It is food that sits under a heat lamp and tastes like it belongs in an High School cafeteria. It is the only "bbq" place in the area, but I highly recommend you look yonder if a BBQ craving hits.
I've been here a few times and I assure you, it does have quite a following. I don't consider boiling your ribs but of real BBQ. Grilling maybe, but not real BBQ or smoking. Anyway the foods okay, but I've learned to make them myslef and quite frankly, better than others I've tried. But don't get me wrong, it's sort of a cool place, rustic, homey.
I LOVE Bubs. The atmosphere is amazing, with the free juke box, paper towels on the table, Trivial Pursuits cards for entertainment, what's not to love? The BBQ is ok to pretty good, especially for a Yankee place, but the cold bar makes it for me - corn salad, cottage cheese, potato salad, beets, pasta salad, it's all too good. I could probably just make a meal out of the hot and cold bar, easily. I'd say pay the extra $ and get some ribs or something similar over the pulled pork, the pulled pork and other sammies just aren't super remarkable but the ribs are very good.
Get the deep fried Twinkie for desert. It's worth every calorie.
Bub's is a must-visit if you are in the area. It's not gourmet but it's one of the few authentic BBQ places us yankees have.
I'm going to start with an anecdote about Bub's: When Bub's only area competition, Holy Smokes, tragically burned down the owners of Bub's ran a fundraiser to help the owners get back on their feet. Now, that's a class act.
Onto the review: The meat itself never blew me away, although it more than holds its own against some of the better BBQ pits in the South. The missing factor seems to be the slow-cooked method that Holy Smokes and so many of the more famous BBQ places have perfected. However, their secret sauce recipe is among one of the best I've tasted and a perfect balance of sweet and spicy.
But what makes this place really shine is the sides bar. Every meal comes with unlimited visits to the sides bar and this is what makes Bub's so great: Because every single one of the sides is AMAZING. In particular, the baked beans and citrus sweet potatoes are PERFECTION.
So grab your choice of meat, load up on some of the best BBQ sides you'll have in your life and enjoy the cozy charm and casual vibe. And with the free sides, free refills, and free jukebox you really ought to stay awhile.
I lived in Sunderland for a year, amidst tobacco farms and Western Mass nothingness, with my only savior being Bub's. I always left that place with barbeque smeared on my face and hands, nearing food coma, stuffed with one too many free sides (delicious ones too!), pulled pork, and ribs. And then I slept.
If you ever find yourself in the Amherst/Hadley/Northhampton area, this little smoky shack on Rt 116 is the barbeque oasis you've been looking for.
Damn good food here..if you're an incoming freshman, bring your fam here on a non-university sponsored weekend..you're more likely to get a seat!
Bub's is ok for bbq-ish type food.
They quantities are quite large, but they are just grilled foods, not really bbq. The bar of sides/condiments is really cool though!
It is a nice place to hang out with friends and family, though. Very casual vibe.
This is the best place in the world. It's a roadside dive (the clean kind) in Sunderland, a few miles off Route 9 in Hadley. Order yourself a pulled pork sandwich, load up your plate with free french fries, baked beans, potato salad, bread, grab a free cup of soup, sit down at a picnic table outside, and try not to fill up before they call your name to let you know that your food is ready. It's all delicious. You can't go wrong with anything, except maybe the fried chicken sandwich (which I got once, and it was still frozen inside) - but why are you ordering fried chicken here anyway?
They have great hush puppies, too, but why pay for anything other than your meat when all kinds of all-you-can-eat goodies come for free with everything? Oh, right, because hush puppies are awesome, and where else will you find them in western mass??
Wear elastic-waist pants and enjoy.
Pulled pork for life!
I love Bub's BBQ - their baby back ribs are wonderful, and the pulled pork isn't bad either.
Come hungry and with time to spare, with all you can eat sides, free drink refills, free songs on the jukebox, and trivia cards on all the tables, you'll be eating for a while. (http://www.bubsbbq.com)
I love this place!!! It's so yummy and you can get sooo much food with your meal. It has classic BBQ foods like cole slaw, beans, potato salad...etc. I love it and it's really affordable. It's a little out of the way on 116, but it's totally worth it.
I've been underwhelmed every time I've eaten at Bub's-- I like really messy, juicy bbq, and Bub's ain't it.
I've been down in the deep south for almost four months now, and every time I have barbeque, I think of Bub's with longing. Have I just had bad luck down here? Perhaps. But until I find something to take it's place, Bub's will be my favorite barbeque place in the world.
I don't have to say much more than this: I think this is the only place in Massachusetts where you can get grilled alligator.
If you're ever craving BBQ or just looking for a hearty meal while traveling along Route 91 in Mass., this is the place to stop. It's about 5 miles off the highway. Low prices and a family friendly atmosphere, serves the greatest BBQ around. If you actually have some room left or just enough for a bite of dessert, definitely try the deep fried twinkie!
There's little in Western Mass for good BBQ but I have been a fan of Bub's for a long time. Their tangy sauce is one of their reasons for success. Great ribs, brisket and pulled pork. The best part is you can have all you can eat sides! Collard greens, mashed sweet potatoes, fries, beans, spicy rice, baked beans, soup and bread. No one leaves this place hungry or without a smile on their face. A roll of paper towels at every table lets you know that you are going to get down and dirty to enjoy your meal. Buy their sauce to take home, its well worth it.
This place is wonderful. I never had Gator Tails before. And the unlimited hot n' cold bar is brilliant. Not to mention the free jukebox. You really can't go wrong with Bub's!
I've been only once, but I was sold.
The last time I went was in 2004, so it's possible the quality of the food has changed.
Their ribs were delicious, and their sides were equally amazing. Dirty rice and fries get two thumbs up.
Be careful when you go on a rainy day - it was unpaved and totally muddy when I last visited.
Great barbeque, funky atmosphere, plenty of yummy sides...family friendly and good draughts. Thanks to the folks in Winterpills for telling me about it!
We took a detour on our way back from Vermont to NJ to go here for lunch. It's an experience.
