Very good baby back rips.
Combos are a good deal for sampling.
Try there homemade BBQ sauce.

Not sure who it was that rated this the best BBQ in the area (according to the posting on the walls) but I beg to differ. It was quite mediocre at best.
I will give them a pass on the 20 minute wait for 2 sandwiches since we were there at opening. My brisket sandwich was probably the worst I've ever had. It had a silvery sheen to the meat like it had been sitting around a while....clearly not just cut off the brisket. It was drowning in this unremarkable sauce and it was served on smashed white bun from some commercial bakery. My wifes pulled pork was only a little better. Less sauce. The meat looked a little fresher (although its hard to tell with pulled pork).
One of the attractions is supposed to be the unlimited sides but the ones I tried were also average at best. The beans tasted like somebody had splashed some of the BBQ sauce into a can of beans. The cole slaw had crispy veggies but the dressing was not very interesting. Tasted like I was munching on a mouth full of cabbage/carrots.
The place filled quickly with UMass shirts so the beer by the pitcher must be the attraction. Clearly its not the quality of the food. -

Oh my, what are those 5 star reviewers thinking?! We've had 2 really bad meals from Bub's (thought the first one might have been a fluke) and are never going back. We had pulled pork in gross sauce,' roasted potatoes' that were almost inedible, and the worst preparation of collard greens ever. SO disappointing as the BBQ options in western MA are limited at best.
Anyone in the Boston/ Cambridge area should check out Blue Ribbon BBQ in Arlington to understand why our standards are so high. -

There is a reason fat bikers and violently stoned college kids from Amherst love this place. The food....so good. Frankly, I'm a picnic table enthusiast- so I not only enjoy gorging myself on delicious BBQ, but also relish the chance to sit roadside at a sticky table while doing so. There are no frills, so if you were thinking about taking the Princess of Luxembourg here on a first date, reconsider.

Springfield, MA
I, too, was excited to see a bbq place around here as Famous Dave's is all Springfield has to offer, and it's not great bbq.
However, I wasn't all that impressed with Bub's. As someone else mentioned, there was no smoking going on when we arrived. I liked the pulled pork, but the ribs were only so-so as certainly not fall-off-the-bone ribs one gets in the South.
The buffet of sides is a nice idea, but what is bbq without mashed potatoes and mac and cheese? The dirty rice is good as are the other sides, particularly the collard greens. They are REALLY strick given the buffet style, and the only thing they will wrap up for take away is the meat portion of the meal, which is understandable given how people would load up on the sides for the road.
It can't compete with real Southern bbq, but it is the best I've found around these parts. -

Great, regionally famous bbq. I've always enjoyed the entree that I've ordered. The buffet of side dishes is good too. The only drawback for me is that it feel a bit factory-like.

This bbq joint is a great value and the food is excellent. All of the entrees come with a hot and cold side buffet which has some very delicious and yet healthy choices. This is not one of frozen and can type of buffets , the items are home and fresh even local in season. The veggie soup is quite salty . The staff is prompt and friendly .
The atmosphere could use some updating and cleaning but add to the southern country bbq feel.
This is one of my favorite dining option in the valley and is a great deal. A must visit and make sure you are hungry. -

I live in the North Shore of MA but yet I've been to this place probably 15 times in the last 10 years. It's absolutely phenominal. I love it's character and its baby-back ribs are top-notch. I honestly don't think there are better ribs anywhere else in the whole state of Massachusetts (and yes, I've been to Fireflies, Redbones, Blue Ribbon, etc.).
The "hot and cold bar" is awesome and you'll leave stuffed. Just make sure to visit on a nice day so you can eat outside.
Cannot recommend this place enough. -

The Hangar gets 4.5 stars and this place is lingering at under 4... NO NO NO!
Dont get it twisted folks, if you go to Umass or any of the surrounding schools, you owe it to yourself to get bubs.
Bubs & Wings are the only worthwhile food joints in that area (No subshops or pizza spots are any good). I absolutely love this place and can NOT wait to go back :)
PS. Unlimited Sides =BOMB -
Review from Holly S.
I basically drove from Boston to Amherst for Bub's the other day. I mean, sure, if you want to get technical, I may have been riding in the backseat of my mom's car so we could wish my sister a Happy Birthday in person out at UMass. Maybe there were other errands involved other than eating at Bub's. And yeah, maybe I was the only one in the party who knew we would eat at Bub's.
But I knew. And it all started weeks before the trip out to western Mass. when I planted the idea of going to Bub's in my sister's head. I said it was delicious and "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" -worthy. That way, halfway during our drive, it was no surprise to me at all when she called to check on our ETA and requested a lunch visit to Bub's. And before you knew it, I had inceptioned my sister on her birthday and there I was, eating at Bub's, all the way from Boston.
Great success. -

Could this place ever compete in Texas? No. Is it the best place to grab BBQ in the area? Yes!
Some reviewers panned it for not being Texas or KC quality...well thats fine...but for Massachusetts it is awesome. The sides are quite good and the BBQ chicken is my favorite.
Try the pie and ice tea! -

Some of the best BBQ I have had in New England yet. After visiting the south for a football game I was surprised to come back and still enjoy what they make here. The meat is always cooked perfectly and hard to argue with the unlimited sides they offer. Perfect place to go if you happen to be up in the area

Unless I was here on a day they were really really off, I don't get any of the praise for this place. I like to think I know a thing or two about barbecue - I have eaten alot of cue in the south and in Texas, and I smoke my own meat. Whatever Bub's serves is not barbecue in the traditional sense. I was bracing myself for a bad experience once I got out of the car - I did not see or smell any smoke. It turned out that my expectations were correct.
I ordered the baby backs and the pulled pork. The ribs looked like no other ribs I've ever had. The ribs did have the normal dark color that one would expect from a dry rub and being smoked low and slow. The ribs were a greyish tan color, and looked like they were boiled. They also still had the membrane on the bottom. Cutting into the slab, there was absolutely no smoke ring to be found. All the meat was a greyish color. The ribs were tender, but they lacked that smoke flavor that good cue should have. The sauce was good, but it just seemed there to hide the lack of flavor in the meat.
The pulled pork was about the same. No smoke flavor, and it was again covered up by the sauce.
The sides did not impress either. The collards, while tender, still had stems. The baked beans tasted alot like Bush's in a can. The hickory smoked potatoes were pretty good, and did have a smoke flavor, but given the rest of the food, I assume liquid smoke was used.
The bottom line is that if you are looking for real barbecue, you will not find it here. If you want some ribs and pulled pork that pretty much what you could make at home in a crock pot, then this is your place. -

The BBQ isn't the world's best but the overall experience: a ramshackle building, fantastic ( unlimited and often locally sourced) all-you-can-eat sides, solid BBQ and cheap beer make for a top-notch experience.
A must whenever I head back out west. -
Review from Steve S.
New York, NY
This place has low quality "BBQ". I ordered a platter of ribs and brisket that was removed from a fridge. The brisket was pre sliced and they heated it up in a wire strainer dipped in sauce on a stove top. My ribs came out of the fridge looking days old and they heated it over a direct flame on a stove top burner. People must like the unlimited yet mediocre sides but what kind of place reheats old food and then serves it to you?! Seriously skip this place, unless for some reason you enjoy paying $20 for low quality, reheated food via boiling in sauce.
The place does have cheap local beer on tap and the staff was really nice. -

Why is it that things are never as good as you remember them to be from years ago. What happens? Do you build up the memories to be something better than the actual experience... better than anything could ever be? Is it how one hangs on to youthful nostalgia, the sentimentality of which must be preserved by not allowing the present to overshadow the treasured past? Are memories real or are they dreams that are only based on experiences from the past? Are you ever going to talk about the frickin' restaurant?
I first visited Bub's sometime in 1982 while on tour with a traveling rock band who were to play The Rusty Nail in Sunderland. They were a handful, and my job was to keep them on stage at night and out of jail by day. The band leader - no stranger to the road life and apparently no stranger to Bub's - actually got up before it was dark out, pounded on my motel door, and demanded that we all jump in the van and go to Bub's. In those days, if any of those guys got up before dark, they were seriously motivated. Such serious motivation was strictly reserved for acquisition or consumption of drugs, alcohol, and young girls and various combinations or permutations of the three. I was not looking forward to meeting Bub.
As I remember it, we rolled up to a corrugated tin shack in the middle of the woods. It had no windows, no sign, and smoke was billowing out of a vent in the roof. There was a door on each end of this long narrow building. I was afraid.
We walked in, and were met with an intoxicating waft of hickory smoke. There was a long row of serving tables and cauldrons stretching the length of the building. You grabbed a plate and a fork, walked through the room and pointed at what you wanted and it was tossed on to your plate. When you got to the end of the building, you pulled a beer from an icy washtub, you paid cash, and you went out the door and sat at a picnic table.
I don't remember what I had. All that I do remember, beyond the previously related tale of how I came to be there, and my dim recollection of the structure, is that for the last 28 years, whenever someone would talk about this barbecue joint or that one, I'd get this strange feeling. I'd say "Bub's," and then my mind would just drift away. I did know, somehow, that whatever I had there that day had been great.
"Bub's?," they'd say.
"Yeah," I 'd answer, "it was some shack out in the middle of the woods in western Massachusetts.
"Never heard of it."
"I dunno, it's probably not there any more. Man. It was awesome."
Sometimes, I'd think I must have dreamed it up. All I could really remember was how good it was. in a shack. in the woods.
Flash forward, 28 years... driving down Route 9 in Hadley with my newly-relocated-to-out-there GF, and as I cross Route 116 I see a sign pointing north. "Bub's Barbecue - 4 miles." Huh? What? No way! I realize that we are actually near Sunderland... it must be the place. We careen up the road, my mouth watering. I had the pulled pork sandwich that day. Went back this past Sunday and had the brisket sandwich.
I'm here to tell you that sometimes you CAN go home. Sometimes, things ARE as good as you remembered. In fact, some times, they're better.
For less than $10 you can get a pulled pork or brisket sandwich with a bottomless cup of soda, and the "hot and cold buffet." For a few more bucks you can get a slab of ribs. Pulled pork - excellent. Brisket - awesome. Buffet - unbelievably great: french fries, hickory smoked roast potatoes, sweet potatoes, collard greens, barbecued beans, dirty rice, roast chicken and vegetable soup, Cole slaw, potato salad, pasta salad, pickled beets, corn salad, and I forget what else... The french fries, dirty rice, collard greens and smoked potatoes are particularly noteworthy. I don't want to give Bub any ideas, but a sandwich with one side and Cole slaw would be a pretty good deal anywhere.
I don't know if there ever really was a windowless tin shack.
I don't know if Route 116 used to be out in the woods.
Seems the young folks out here never heard of a place called "The Rusty Nail."
And I still don't know what I ate that day some 28 years ago.
But, I do know that whatever it was, wherever it was, however it was all those years ago, what I had at Bub's the day before yesterday did not let me and my memories down at all.
When does that happen in real life? Really.
I guess I'll have to go back again soon to make sure Bub's is really there. I might as well have the ribs while I'm checking. -

Bub's came highly recommended to me by several friends. A few others gave me an uninterested shrug when I mentioned I was going. Afterward I figured out that those who had been elsewhere for BBQ had not been a fan, and those who had only been to Bub's for BBQ had loved it.
My pulled pork sandwich was OK, my husband's BBQ spare ribs were OK, and the sides were OK. I felt rather let down when the cottage cheese was my favorite side.
So if you are a BBQ virgin and your expectations are low, Bub's might be the place to try. But if you are a BBQ slut like myself, and have gotten some all over the US, you'll be disappointed. It definitely isn't worth a bikini wax... -

This place gets four stars just for feeding me - I came in here, the lone vegan in an enormous group, and left stuffed and packing leftovers. At a BBQ place!
It's true, I've definitely had much better veggie burgers, but I really just appreciated that they had one. And it's not like it was gross or anything.
However, the sides were delicious. The girl taking orders was nice enough to ask me if I was veg and point out what was cooked with pork or chicken broth or whatever. The seasoning on the fries is addictive, the pasta and cucumber salads are fresh and delicious, etc.
Maybe it's because they're a bunch of inexperienced college kids, but none of the ten or so people I came with had any complaints about their BBQ meat selections. They were all licking their fingers in happy food comas.
The atmosphere is great. We loved sitting outside and taking advantage of the mini-golf (haha) and basketball hoop. Inside the place is really fun, with lots of awards, vintage pics/menus and articles to read on the walls. Bub's is a good time! -

Bub's is ok for bbq-ish type food.
They quantities are quite large, but they are just grilled foods, not really bbq. The bar of sides/condiments is really cool though!
It is a nice place to hang out with friends and family, though. Very casual vibe. -

Great bbq. If you are anywhere near Bub's, you have to stop in for some grub. They can be busy at times and seating inside can be limited. The hot/cold sides buffet is good. Definitely recommend the dirty rice and beans!

After watching a "Best Food" Barbecue edition last night I decided to plan the day today to take my girlfriend to Bub's and the nearby Yankee Candle Village. It is a little bit of drive for us but was well worth it! Bub's BBQ is a great hometown restaurant.
We walked in and were greeted by a girl at the register and she was very friendly and explained to us how things worked there. I got the baby back ribs and my girlfriend got the beef brisket sandwich. I found myself trying to get every piece of meat of of each rib bone because it was so delicious! The sides of hickory smoked potatoes, collard greens, and coleslaw went perfect with them. The fresh local BBC Steel Rail went great with the food. The brisket was pretty tasty too. Will definitely be going back soon even though it is out of the way! -

I lived in Sunderland for a year, amidst tobacco farms and Western Mass nothingness, with my only savior being Bub's. I always left that place with barbeque smeared on my face and hands, nearing food coma, stuffed with one too many free sides (delicious ones too!), pulled pork, and ribs. And then I slept.
If you ever find yourself in the Amherst/Hadley/Northhampton area, this little smoky shack on Rt 116 is the barbeque oasis you've been looking for. -

I miss Bubs. Give me a pitcher of steel rail and some baby back ribs from Bubs and sit me on their outdoor picnic tables as the sun goes down on a warm summer evening and I am a happy camper. Grab some potato salad and bread from the unlimited sides-bar, and maybe an app of alligator tail and you've got it made. It's so good I may just have to engineer a reason to make a stop here the next time I head back to Massachusetts.
May is apparently National BBQ month, and if I had my way I'd be celebrating here.Listed in: In the sleepy west, of the…

This is the best place in the world. It's a roadside dive (the clean kind) in Sunderland, a few miles off Route 9 in Hadley. Order yourself a pulled pork sandwich, load up your plate with free french fries, baked beans, potato salad, bread, grab a free cup of soup, sit down at a picnic table outside, and try not to fill up before they call your name to let you know that your food is ready. It's all delicious. You can't go wrong with anything, except maybe the fried chicken sandwich (which I got once, and it was still frozen inside) - but why are you ordering fried chicken here anyway?
They have great hush puppies, too, but why pay for anything other than your meat when all kinds of all-you-can-eat goodies come for free with everything? Oh, right, because hush puppies are awesome, and where else will you find them in western mass?? -

OK ribs, not my favorite. What really makes this place strive is the sides. you get unlimited sides which was fantastic to get a little of everything and a lot of the things that I really liked.

How can anyone give this place less than 5 stars???? Yes it is a bit gritty, but there is something so comforting about great BBQ (sauce is just the right mix of bit and sweetness), including all kinds of yummy sides. The collard greens were amazing, without any of the bitterness you would expect. I am a french fries sceptic, usually passing them up as not worth the calories, but the Bub's fries are warm, crisp, just delicious. And the prices are very reasonable. The BF ordered a brisket sandwich, I ordered a 1/4 chicken (more than enough with all the sides) and two beverages, coming to about $20. You can hardly do that at fast food these days.
Will no doubt return again and again. -

This is my second review of Bub's and this time, it was me and my wife, there on Friday night at about 8:45 pm. It was slow as in not many people there. A beautiful night so we sat outside and had the tent to ourselves. Again, the sides were great. But the smoked potatoes were the only item of our meal that were truly smoked. Baked beans, dirty rice, collard greens--all great!
We shared the spare ribs/pulled pork combo. Both were really sauced up. The ribs were very meaty and the meat was tender. Unfortunately, not even a hint of smoke flavor and no smoke ring. Good sauce though. :-/
Both the unsweetened tea and the sweet tea seemed watered down. We tossed both for other fountain drinks.
The sides are great but Bub's needs to find its pride and slow smoke the meat.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My buddy and I were out on the bikes today trying to get some riding in while the weather was good. When we got to Conway we both were hungry and he knew of this place, but hadn't tried it. It had come highly recommended.
We arrived just after they opened so we were able to order quickly. The menu is what you would expect for a BBQ joint. We both went with the Baby Back Ribs. With that you got to eat from the hot and cold bars. A bunch of good sides that went right along with the menu. I almost felt like I was at a southern picnic.
Ribs came up pretty quick. They were not swimming in BBQ which I was pleased with. Just enough on top to be messy, but not need a shower after I was done. There was also a dry rub on the meat. The flavor of the sauce was tangy sweet and good! Overall great meal!
I loved the fact that it had rolls of paper towels right on the tables along with a bottle of hot sauce. Great atmosphere.
By the time we were done it was noon and the people start rolling in (many of them on motorcycles). It seems to be a destination spot. It will be added as one to my list! -

I haven't been back for a while and I heard they just sold the place so I hope nothing goes downhill. It's not the best BBQ I've ever had but it's certainly not the worst. I always go for the BBQ chicken which is super yummy. I love the unlimited sides. I've been to a few places where they give you a little tiny cup of side (which is delicious) but if the food is delicious I want to stuff my face. I'll be honest, I've never had true Southern BBQ but as a WMass native and a Northerner this place works for me. It certainly does not disappoint. And heck, maybe someday I'll try the alligator.

Review from Joanne G.
I love BBQ - and what I love about this place is the Bar-B-Que sign more than the actual BBQ - so sad.
I wanted to love it, seriously. I mean, it had all these awards all over the walls (along with Red Sox stuff) but I don't know who came and ate there. It was nothing special. One of the good things they did have was unlimited sides - both hot and cold but the collard greens tasted like they used clam sauce in it (uhhhh what's THAT all about) and the spicy rice wasn't so spicy.
I contemplated the deep-fried twinkie but after trying to swallow down the dry spare ribs - and the extra salty kilbasa - I wasn't in the mood to stay around. -

There are several reasons that I eat at Bub's now and then. Sadly the BBQ isn't one of them.
Here are a few:
1. The sides. All you can eat, local sourcing, and solid if not remarkable.
2. The joint: Outside in the summer, cozy in the winter Bub's is a nice place to hang.
3. I live 10 minutes away
That said, the BBQ is really mediocre. People who love it here have never been to KC, and if you didn't know better, I can see how you might think it's decent. But if you've had it done properly, this is a pretty poor substitute. It is the best BBQ I've had in the Pioneer Valley, but it's pretty much the ONLY BBQ in the Pioneer Valley. -

Bub's is a must-visit if you are in the area. It's not gourmet but it's one of the few authentic BBQ places us yankees have.
I'm going to start with an anecdote about Bub's: When Bub's only area competition, Holy Smokes, tragically burned down the owners of Bub's ran a fundraiser to help the owners get back on their feet. Now, that's a class act.
Onto the review: The meat itself never blew me away, although it more than holds its own against some of the better BBQ pits in the South. The missing factor seems to be the slow-cooked method that Holy Smokes and so many of the more famous BBQ places have perfected. However, their secret sauce recipe is among one of the best I've tasted and a perfect balance of sweet and spicy.
But what makes this place really shine is the sides bar. Every meal comes with unlimited visits to the sides bar and this is what makes Bub's so great: Because every single one of the sides is AMAZING. In particular, the baked beans and citrus sweet potatoes are PERFECTION.
So grab your choice of meat, load up on some of the best BBQ sides you'll have in your life and enjoy the cozy charm and casual vibe. And with the free sides, free refills, and free jukebox you really ought to stay awhile. -

I LOVE Bubs. The atmosphere is amazing, with the free juke box, paper towels on the table, Trivial Pursuits cards for entertainment, what's not to love? The BBQ is ok to pretty good, especially for a Yankee place, but the cold bar makes it for me - corn salad, cottage cheese, potato salad, beets, pasta salad, it's all too good. I could probably just make a meal out of the hot and cold bar, easily. I'd say pay the extra $ and get some ribs or something similar over the pulled pork, the pulled pork and other sammies just aren't super remarkable but the ribs are very good.
Get the deep fried Twinkie for desert. It's worth every calorie. -

You always remember your first.
This is the first great BBQ place I went to back in the UMass Amherst day. I love this place....you have got to try it. Nothing like the delicious sausages, pulled pork, brisket, pitcher of cold beer and unlimited ridiculous sides. Only Bubs can cut up a potpourri of assorted vegetables and put them in tub of hot water to create a simple rememberable soup, it's the small details you remember here, whether it be the soup, roll of paper towel on the table or the loaves of french bread resting on the cutting board with a tub of butter. Did I mention that the tub of butter has a rubber spatula planted inside to spread your butter.
Seriously , give this place a try when your in the area and hit up the jukebox, you won't be disappointed. -

More than I enjoy the food from Bub's, I enjoy the idea of Bub's.
I love the free sides and always leave full. I love most of the decorations and general atmosphere inside. I've always had great service.
The food is reasonably priced, and good (but not amazing). It is also one of the only restaurants in the immediate area, which helps. -

It's a very cheap, homey, and tasty barbecue place. To all those on this page who have claimed that only those who don't know real bbq will like Bub's, I say this: 5th place in a nationwide bbq sauce contest. The pulled pork is good, not excellent, but good. The brisket, on the other hand, is excellent. Perfectly delicious. And most of the unlimited sides from the hot and cold bar are extremely good, as well. Overall, it's just a nice, homey, no-fuss place to eat with good food and friendly people.

The food is good, the service is fast, and they sell beer by the pitcher. Love it. Hint: do not fill up on the unlimited sides first, or you will never finish your baby back ribs and pulled pork platter. I've only been here on Saturday nights, and when this place gets crowded, it's a little difficult to maneuver through the line to get to the sides. But then again, if it's busy, I guess that's a testament to the food.
