This review is solely on the mochi ice cream. They also have shakes & ice cream that we didn't try. The best Mochi I've tasted thus far!!! Fresh & tons of different flavors to choose from. We got the dozen variety pack & tried each one! Everything from azuki bean to mint chocolate flavored. There was actually 16 different flavors, but we knew we wouldn't be able to finish 16 mochi balls, and went with a dozen between the 4 of us, and decided to not go with the "original flavors" (strawberry, original, green tea, etc).

If you've been a fan of mochi out of the box, you should definitely check this place out. I would definitely come back!

Caution: may not necessarily be kid friendly if they can read. We were literally cracking up. They have come up with some very provocative/ x-rated ice cream drink/shake concoction names. Let's just put it at that ;OP

My cousin was given a Bubbies t-shirt today as one of her birthday presents. I think this perfectly represents her addiction (and now my addiction too!). The shirt's slogan "Shouldn't you be licking something...?" is pretty funny stuff too!

Also, we walked by a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and were excited to see a sign in the window that they now are serving Bubbies mochi balls. Now my cousin can get Bubbies mochi balls within walking distance of her house!

Bubbies is a unique little ice cream shop. They have very "interesting" names for their ice creams and desserts. Their mochi ice cream is popular as well as the myriad of homemade ice cream creations.

I'm just a green tea ice cream kind of guy. Love it. Bubbies is a must try for anyone who enjoys ice cream.

The parking lot is ridiculous and hopefully you can find a spot. There can be lines and as a result it could be crowded inside. They also have a location out in Hawaii Kai, but this location is the one that carries so much character.

Mmmmm... Bubbies! Best ice cream on the island, hands down. They have all the not so typical flavors: Banana Royal (strawberry banana), Green Tea, Passion Fruit, pumpkin pie, etc. And a few typical ones as well: Chocolate, coffee, cookies and cream, etc. (Their cookies and cream is the BEST I've ever had, and I'm not much of a cookies and cream kind of girl.)
They also serve fancy mochi ice cream, ice cream pies and coffee drinks. It's a small shop, so seating can be limited, and it's always busy, so it can get noisy. Parking can also be difficult, but it's more than worth all the hassle, trust me.

Recently had the green tea mochi from Whole Foods. Just reminded me how much I miss Hawaii.
I love the very unique names to their flavors or deserts. Great lil ice cream shop, especially after a night out on the town.
My girl who is from the area, tells me that it was the place when she went to University of Hawaii.
The only con, was the parking, but not their fault really. Just shows how popular and in demand they are. Make a trip if you never been.

Once you get past the witty dessert names ( "Bite Me", "Maybe the Bag Broke", "Big Navel") and their overwhelming selection of specialty desserts, beverages and ice cream flavors, buckle down and try any of their mochi ice cream or homemade ice cream flavors.

Our group enjoyed the refreshing watermelon and green tea ice cream flavors as well as a slice of their "Functioning Prostate" :)

Hanging out at Bubbies is definitely a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon!

Back when I was dating a little missy from Hokkaido, Japan, she told me a story about how one one of her friends insisted the place was pronounced "Boobies". The friend was so set on this, she got up from their table & asked the cashier if she was saying the store name right. MAN did they get a table n' foot stomping hoot & hollar from that one!

Hokkaido-chan liked the green tea ice cream here. As for me, I never found it to be a Filipino favorite, granted she had Pinoy "in her" at the time. As for "her" boobies? That's none of yoe gawd dang binnness!!!

Took a girls trip to Hawaii, T's cousin (who is a local) took us to get mochi a Bubbies.  By far the BEST mochi I've had.

Green Tea is my favorite!  Azuki (Red Bean) is a great choice as well as Expresso.

Lucky for me, the Whole Foods in my area sells them, and they are just as good as buying them from the actual shop.  (only problem is they only carry Green Tea, unless you like mango, white chocolate raspberry, strawberry, or vanilla).

It definitely beats out the Mochi on sale at Nijiya.

this place is good because of  the ambiance and the "cool" dessert names, but i prefer the quality of dave's ice cream more.

also, they are "FAMOUS" for their mochi ice-cream, but really - what's the huge deal? it's a rip from asian ice-cream dessert that i grew up eating:

They got rid of the all the scandalously named ice cream pies! What gives? I go every year/every few months and this past weekend, I noticed that their screaming orgasms and menage a trois and other assorted bedroom niceties have been deleted or replaced???

I do like their ice cream, though. The dark dark chocolate chocolate chip is very nice. But usually I get a yummy bedroom-related ice cream pie of some sort.

Man.  The first time I had Bubbies in the states, they weirded me out a little bit.  What's this strange chewy outer layer?

I later figured it out.  That strange chewy outer layer is pure deliciousness that takes ice cream to a whole new level.  The ice cream itself is delicious, the store is fast and easy considering how many people go, and the sexual innuendos all around give something funny to observe while you wait.

My favorites:
Strawberry
Chocolate-Vanilla
Raspberry
Chocolate-Peanut Butter

Can't beat it for a tasty dessert.

Okay, so i've been so pro-Dave's Ice Cream over the years, but i've got to admit that Bubbies is definitely comparable with the previously mentioned ice cream parlour.  The ice cream is extremely rich and creamy...so creamy and rich in fact, that they have a water machine there so you don't walk out with a sticky, creamy mouth in the end.  You pay for the ice cream by the weight, so if you want, you can get a small scoop of the stuff you want to try (they will of course let you sample before you buy) and a larger scoop of your favorites.

Their green tea ice cream is very good, as are their sorbets (though sorbets are not exactly ice cream).  I also really liked their banana/blueberry, dark dark chocolate, and rum rasin.  I'm sure all the flavors are good, but i'll let others speak for them.

In the end, i've realized that i'm just too lazy to drive all the way to Dave's when i'm in town by the University, and this place is just as good as any place you will find on my hometown rock.

Happy Eating!

My friends and I were looking for a dessert place after dinner since it was still pretty early and our waitress at Side Street Inn recommended this place. This place was difficult to find because despite the address, it is NOT on University Ave. We didn't really know what to expect to find here but the dessert names definitely grabbed our attention. They have desserts with names like Come Here Little Girl and Maybe The Bag Broke. Not what you'd expect at a dessert shop. My friends and I shared the Prisoner of My Mind which was a chocolate macadamia nut ice cream on an oreo crust with fudge and whipped cream topping. MMm...is all I have to say about that.

If you come here, you MUST try the mochi. We ordered one each of the lychee, guava and passion mochi because we didn't know if they were going to be any good but once we finished them we bought a container to go. All three were so good!! My favorite is the passion mochi though. My friend described it as a strawberry mentos  and I have to agree. It was so good I didn't want to finish it them. This place is a must if you love dessert like I do.

Bubbies has so many ice cream and mochi flavors to choose from that its a bit overwhelming.  But they do churn out a good cup of coconut ice cream.  Great flavor but the ice cream consistency is a bit 'sticky'.  Overall, its a good place to go for a variety of local and mainstream flavors.

My favorite ice cream stop.  Maybe 16-20 rich homemade flavors.  I like that they're sort of dense and not nauseatingly sweet. The chocoholic in me has to give the nod to their dark dark chocolate chocolate chip.  Although they also have a case full of creatively (and sometimes risqué) named desserts, and their mochi ice cream is the standard by which others should be measured, I usually go for the simplicity of a single scoop in a bowl for the purist experience unadulterated by "mix-ins" or other confectionary gimmickry.

So I'm sitting here with a cup of tea and I think it's a good day to finally right some much needed reviews!

I'm lucky enough to have a very good friend live in Honolulu so whenever I find good deals on flights I get my little butt on over to spend a good deal in the sun and enjoy the amazing hawaii weather I don't get here in San Francisco.

We stumbled on this place by accident but OH MY FRIGGIN GOD this place was so great. Like everyone has said, the ice cream mochi is amazing. I haven't had such great mochi in my life, no lie.

The price is definitely right for about a buck a pop- it was a nice change from the $9 tiny meals I had been eating while living on Kalakua for two weeks! This place is best and I can't wait to go back!

Yummy for my tummy, their ice cream is amazing!!!  It took my CA friends visiting this wk to get me to try out this place for the first time.  The server graciously allowed me to split my single scoop into 2 flavors--pnb banana & mocha java.  Sooooooo gooooooood!!!!  At roughly $3 it was a great deal.

There were a ton of other ice cream flavors like hostess cupcake, mint chip, etc & they also had a full menu of mochi ice cream flavors as well as ice cream 'pies' by the slice.

The only negative is that they don't take debit/credit cards.  It's cash only or local check w/2 local forms of ID.

Mochi ice cream heaven.

We stumbled up on this place one day and now everytime we visit Honolulu, we come here to get our fix which usually means a mix of different flavors. The last time we went, we bought a dozen and then gobbled them down as fast as we could before they melted, amidst sighs of pleasure and groans of brain freeze.

Will definitely come back again the next time we are on the island :)

Got lost on the way here, parked in BK lot to stay and eat in shop, and the inside looked like a run down Denny's- but it was all worth it for Bubbie's Mochi.

You can order a Mochi, 3 Mochi, 6 Mochi,  and Mochi +. There is a wall of choices and then specials of the day. My brother and I selected 6 to split- Green Tea, Strawberry, Papaya, Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Coffee. They were all delicate, flavorful, and were better as they warmed up. The favorites were Papaya, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Coffee. We alternated eating halves of the Mochi, and it was hard not to eat all of it sometimes. Stop here when you are on the island!

Fyi's~
* Bubbie's is located in a building on University- but Bubbie's is in the back making it hard to see from the street
* Bubbie's walls are lined with articles about the founder, the mochi, and acclaim for the product
* Bubbie's menu also offers delicious looking ice cream and creative milkshakes

Great variety of homemade mochis filled with ice cream.  We tried the green tea (most popular), passion, and strawberry.  All the fillings were yummy.  The mochi texture was perfect. A lot of other places, the skin is too hard/rough, this was chewy.

Good spot to check out when visiting.

Their mochi ice cream is yummy (looove their fancy flavors that they come up with!), their ice cream pies are yummy, their peanut butter chocolate shakes are yummy.  My boyfriend and I usually end up with a dozen mochi ice cream!

Bubbies can get really crowded on the weekends, especially after there's a UH event at the Stan Sheriff. Lines usually go out the door, but the staff usually work really fast so the line goes by pretty fast.  This place is perfect for an after-dinner date!

I think I tried every flavor of mochi ice they had! My favorite was the wasabi flavor... basically a very good, creamy vanilla and then the wasabi kinda tickles your nose for a bit.  Not too strong, but definitely made a presence.  I won't get lilikoi again, too sour and doesn't taste much like lilikoi (besides the sourness).  A little on the expensive side and seating is a kinda cramped as is the parking.

I really wanted to try the cake named Multiple Orgasm to see if I could get one.. or at least multiple mouthgasms :)

You have to try the sakura and guava flavor, so yummy!  I've also heard that lychee is really good, but didn't get a chance to try that flavor.  The consistency of the mochi and ice cream a firm so it doesn't melt in your hands, which is a plus.

I was told by the worker that the green tea mochi is their most popular flavor, but it didn't make my taste buds all crazy for more.  It tastes the same as if you got it from the grocery store.

Mochi ice cream is one of those things that you have to eat right then and there.  I bought a dozen and stored it in the hotel room fridge and it just wasn't the same.

Unlike everyone else in Hawaii I'm not amazed with the fact that you can serve yourself at this new found thing called a yogurt shop and (gasp) put your own toppings on. Seriously, when I want ice cream I'm lazzzzy. Bubbies will do it all for you. I wish I could say with a smile but no, you can't have everything! And that's why you shouldn't tip those bitches. I've heard the many complaints from friends that the workers are rude but hey would you be happy if I was telling you that I want 10 different flavors of mochi ice cream and to put them all in separate baggies?! I don't think so.

Must try:
Mocha Chip Ice Cream (with whip cream and a gummy bear on top!)
Mint Chocolate and Lychee Mochi Ice Cream
And any and all of their ice cream pies- it's a singles dream!

The Hawaii Kai location is nice but just doesn't have the same ambience. AKA the workers are smiling. But they both boast concoctions with crazy names that will make even non-asians blush.

p.s. the parking here is HELL at night so be prepared with a runner/little sister to hold your spot in line while you circle the block.

I was introduced to Bubbies by a local almost a year ago and I don't remember complaining about the taste... it was ok. I only had it twice and only went to get my fill on the mochi ice cream... if I can remember, I probably had strawberry, chocolate, chocolate/vanilla, passion fruit. It's hard to screw up on mochi ice cream. When I went, there wasn't a long line and we parked on the street. If I'm ever on Oahu and craving mochi ice cream, I'll probably come back to try the other flavors since I'm a huge mochi ice cream fan. If you're visiting Oahu or love Mochi ice cream, you should plan on stopping by here and trying it out for yourself!

5 stars for good mochi ice cream!

"Hey look, Eat My Balls."
"What?  Where's that?"
"You see Bubbie's Pasties?"
"Hmm, I don't see that either."
"See Trashy Mocha at the top?"
"Uhh, yeah."
"Go down a few, Bubbies Pasties?"
"Hmm... oh okay."
"There, Eat My Balls."

This place is not one where you can take a 3-year-old and read off the menu.  Try the Multiple Orgasm, seriously dangerous.  Oreo, Chocolate, and Coffee ice cream on a Oreo crumb crust, topped off with something that's a cross between chocolate ganache and chocolate fudge, finished with a few chocolate jimmies.

They are known for their mochi ice cream, which come in a plethora of flavors (over 20!) that you CAN'T get in the grocery store.  I could probably name all the ones that Mikawaya makes (Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Green Tea, Mango, Kona Coffee, Chocolate Chocolate, and a Red Bean [okay, I had to look up the Red Bean]).  And you know what?  The ones at Bubbies are BIGGER than the Mikawaya ones.  For crying out loud, support the local economy.  Bubbies also mixes and matches different flavors of mochi with different flavors ice cream.  For example, the Chocolate Vanilla is chocolate mochi filled with vanilla ice cream.  If you're a mochi fanatic, is there anything better than mochi ice cream?  How about taking your favorite flavor, and dipping it in chocolate?  They're a quarter or so more in cost, but completely worth the extra cents and calories.

I have yet to sample their ice cream on its own, but if it was good enough in the pie (I call it pie, not cake, there's no freakin cake in it, so why call it cake?), it must be good enough.  There was this double double dark chocolate chocolate flavor or something that was calling me, but unfortunately, I was too full from inhaling 4 mochi ice cream.

I was tempted by a frozen coffee drink, and gave in.  The girl took foreeeeeeeeeeever to make it, and it didn't even taste that great.  So much for my $4+.

They're open late, but there's usually a line.  The employees the last time I went, were 3 girls probably in college.  They don't speak nicely to each other (I heard stupid or dumbass or something like that), and they are within earshot of the customers.  Not very professional.  Bring paper, not plastic, and a getaway driver.  Parking SUCKS.

I love Bubbies! They have the most unique flavors, all with the perfect creamy texture, and you pay the weight of exactly how much you want! I usually get two fetal scoops of different flavors, and eat it with a mini tester spoon because it helps me enjoy it at a proper pace. =)

My favorites are lychee, green tea, mango, azuki bean, and coconut.

My boyfriend told me about this alternative to the mochi ice cream that they used to have: a dollop of ice cream wrapped in cookie dough! It sounds amazing, but they took it off their menu, and sadly, I've never gotten a chance to try it. Woe is me.

I've frequented the Bubbies in Hawaii Kai, as well as the one by Manoa. Both are equally delicious!

P.S. I took a star off because my boyfriend's cousin used to work here and she's told me about how the owner is a perverted pedophile. I've encountered him several times at the location in Hawaii Kai, and he certainly has a way of looking at women that makes you REALLY uncomfortable. Bubbies is the place to get lots and lots of ice cream, but NOT a place to ask for a job.

I don't know how or where my habit came from when it comes to reviewing the local college community creameries (Diddy Riese in UCLA area, Amy's at University of Texas Austin) so here I am in the Manoa area of Hawaii. I'm not sure if the ice cream is aimed for the actual locals, the college students or the tourists.  It is pricier than the average ice cream faire.

Having said all of that, Multiple Orgasm.  My only critique of it is that the espresso should be ditched for another chocolate oriented flavor, and a thicker fudge layer is needed.  Otherwise, I'd say it's a great ice cream pie.  (Sorry, I'm only a guy so I'm just familiar with single ones, not multiples!)

My absolute favorite dessert in the whole world is none other than... MOCHI! I love mochi so much that I even named my dog it. :P So of course I had to try out this place since it was featured in Oprah for it's delicious, homemade mochi ice cream.

It took us a while to find this place since it's behind the Hawaii bank and I would never think to walk in that direction to find the place. I ended up calling them and asking them for better directions.

When you first walk in, it looks like a regular mom and pop ice cream store. Nothing too impressive. It was even hard to find mochi menu. I guess their specialty is the homemade ice cream. But I came here for the mochi.

We ordered 2 mochis each a total of four, passion, guava, green tea and azuki beans. It was completely frozen and we had to wait for it to defrost. But after it defrosted, it was SOOOO GOOD. The homemade ice cream really made a huge difference. Each of the flavors were very intense and you can actually taste the flavors unlike other supermarket sold mochi ice creams. Out of the four flavors, the passion, guava and green tea really stood out for me.

Passion flavor was really refreshing and in a hot tropical place/day, it's the perfect finishing touch to a lunch. Guava was really good too, it was a delicious fruit flavor to have in an ice cream. I've never had guava ice cream before. The green tea flavor was really intense and just great to consume.

Overall, I heart this place! I'm definitely coming back here later this week!

Handsdown bubbies' mochi rocks! me and my friend split the 12 mochis for $10 and boy is it worth it.  I got strawberry, guava, lilikoi, green tea, sakura, and azuki bean.  All were delish but my all time fave is the green tea, its not too sweet and has a subtle green tea taste, which i prefer.  unlike other green tea ice creams that have a REALLY strong green tea taste.  Bubbies is just PERRRFECT.  I definitely want to try some of their interesting ice cream pies.  I will be here often seeing as though its right down the street from my school.  Good Job Bubbies!

I just la-la-love BUBBIES!

Their Ice-cream is the best! I like to come in and try the different types of Ice cream that they offer but for some reason I can only stick to two three flavors.

1. Macadamia Ice Cream: sooooooooo goood! excellent! I love the flavor and I love how there are bits of macadamia nut pieces in there.

2.Cocodamia: A mixture of coconut and macadamia... man this was the best! I only had it once but if I see it again I'll definitely take a batch home.

3. Banana Royale: Nice banana flavor, creamy... kinda unique if you ask me but yeah I can't get into detail with this one but if you like bananas you'll probably like this ice cream.

Oh yeah... during christmas I tried their gingerbread mochi ice cream and candy cane mochi ice cream! FREEEGIN AWESOME! can't wait for christmas to come along again =0)

OMG!!  I haven't had so many flavors of mochi ice cream before.  The skin is just the right thickness and the texture gave just enough to keep things inside.  My fav was the green tea.  Great place to stop by after dinner or any time.

Beware, parking can pose to be a problem.

Oh how I miss Bubbies. So many varieties of mochi ice cream. Passion fruit, lychee, sakura, and the list goes on... My goal of trying every flavor fell short because I was fixated on my favorites. Maybe the next time I'm in Hawaii I will achieve my goal.

The place is right by UH and across the street from the college bars I suppose. There are tables and chairs for customers to sit at but no bathroom to use. There is a water cooler you can get free water from which is nice since eating ice cream for me makes my throat dry. Parking can be a pain sometimes since the lot is so small, but there is usually street parking available nearby.

Highly recommended! I misssssss yoooooooou Bubbies!!!

Love Bubbies!
They weigh the ice cream so you pay for exactly what you get which is definitely a plus.
The menu is pretty extensive and the mochi ice cream is must have.
Great place to treat yourself.
