It was the morning after an extended happy hour, and I was craving fried chicken.
After 6 years of living in Dallas, I wrongly dismissed this fast food- esque building across from SMU campus as just another hum drum diner.   I was so wrong.

    Under $10
2 piece breast and thigh, mashed potatoes, okra with tomatoes and homemade rolls were fresh out of a grandmas house.  I had an extra roll for dessert with the honey provided on the table.
"this really is perfect hangover food." Mark said. "I can't believe I've never been here, the eye candy alone is worth a second visit."

Good old timey feeling diner across from SMU.

It is funny because I was there with some of my extended family and one of the younger ones went to use their bathroom and came back and said, why is there bathroom outside (you have to go outside and around the corner to enter the bathrooms) and the answer was that we think it is because long ago this location used to be a gas station, to which we still had a blank stare looking back at us because in his young life he isn't familiar with gas station with exterior bathrooms.

So that is off topic of the actual restaurant except to say that it is kind of neat that it has been around for a long time.  It feels a little like you are in an episode of Happy Days.

The breakfast is your pretty basic greasy spoon type fare.  Bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, etc.

Their biscuits and gravy are really good and I really don't want to know how bad they probably are for you.

I haven't been there for lunch or dinner in a long time but do remember their chicken strips being pretty good and seeing as how the rest of the place hasn't changed at all, i would assume they are still good.

3 piece meal with mashed potatoes and green beans.  Roughly ~$12 after tax.

The food is good.  Fried chicken is a little bit better than the fast food chicken places, skin a bit crispier.  The mashed potatoes were definitely run of the mill.  Green beans were excellent and would get them again.

But the price does not justify the food.  I would rather pay $12 for a family meal at Popeye's or Church's than pay $12 for 3 pieces of a marginally better piece of fried chicken.

  Try the place, it's good no question.  Just the price, IMO, is too high for what you get.

You guys let me down on this one, Yelpers - all these great reviews deceived me.  The chicken was old, cold, and flavorless.  The plus?  It wasn't dry.  Those mashed potatoes tasted like TIN... no literally like they might have come out of a tin can.  This place was so public school cafeteria.

The rolls were a highlight - they were so tasty, I bought a package of Sister Schubert's the next day.

PASS on this place - seriously.  I could have gotten chicken out of a 7-Eleven or Dodge's that would have tasted just as good.  AND the place is dirty... Methinks not.

& to think I chose this place over Torchy's at the last minute... I missed a chance to have Torchy's for this?  Terrible.

I love their fried chicken, green beans, and bread.

The skin is crisp and the frying oil that is used is fresh.

You order right at the counter.. get your food handed to you.. take a seat and chow down! ( INSTANT GRATIFICATION!)

Man I wish this was a chain that had more places around Dallas. The chicken is delicious and always cooked right. I've tried the chicken fried steak and didn't really care for it, so I'm sticking with the regular fried chicken from now on. The dinner rolls are amazing! Kind of heavy but oh so good. The first time I went here I was expecting a sit-down family style place like Babe's, but this place is pretty much a fast food place but with better quality food.

The only thing that kind of bothers me is the prices for the individual sides. ~$10 for a quart of mashed potatoes? Uhmm...ok. It's a good thing the food is so good because those kind of prices for inexpensive sides are a rip. The chicken and rolls are actually just a tad on the high side too...but that's only if you compare to places like Church's and Grandy's and the like. Bubba's is definitely a notch or two up in my book..so I'm OK with a little extra. Good spot for some good chicken. You have to try it!

Best Dallas breakfast--hands down. This home of big fluffy, buttery pancakes, biscuits & eggs for dirt cheap were where my sorority sisters & I would flock every Sunday morning after a late night. I also loved the thick, creamy oatmeal w/ brown sugar, raisins & milk.

This is where I had my last meal as a college graduate (well, before my professional graduate degree), I loved it so much. I think Bubba's catfish is a tie with Houston's the Breakfast Klub's Katfish. I think Bubba's might be thinner & crispier. But I think it's a draw.

Fan-tas-tic fried chicken. Loved the thick bacon & gravy.

Meat was juicy on the inside. Sides were plentiful. Warm, fresh rolls were just the right hint of sweet.

Low-key yet in the Highland Park area, we walked into Bubba's where families, some oldies, and hungry lacrosse players were eating at. Sounds like a one-size fits-all sort of joint!

We each got the 3 piece fried chicken combo with 2 slides. The coleslaw was just the right mayo-level: little. The mashed potatoes and green beans...tasted familiar (nothing special, nothing wrong), and the fried okra was crispy on the outside and slimy on the inside...just how I like it! You softies, beware: the chicken is SUPER crispy and bursts with steam and juices upon first bite. Oh, and also beware of the biscuit. It's super crisp and buttery without leaving you a metallic feel on the palate that comes with EXCESS LARD, you know what I'm saying.

Unless I'm looking for a old-timey family diner to eat at, I don't think I'll call back here again, as our bill came to be 23 bucks...and Pop-eye's or Church's does the same job but with more fried goodness for the same buck.

    Be still, my beating heart!

There's no better way to start your day than to devour artery clogging Biscuits & Gravy with thick cut bacon...

Bubba's is not a table side restaurant. You have to order your food at the counter. The young lady working the register was friendly and patient with the two out-of-towners that was my bud Mark and I.

Although I hadn't the opportunity to tried more of Bubba's signature dishes, namely their fried chicken, I still can't help myself but to give them 5 stars for what was such a great breakfast.

Biscuits & Gravy with 3 Slices of Bacon: 4.5/5
Such fine biscuits...sigh! As I write this review, my uncontrollable salivation is triggered by their buttery, flaky softness! This would be the first time I've had gravy served on the side rather than with a dousing. Is there a reason for not pouring on top? Who knows! Maybe they serve it on the side so the biscuit bottoms don't get soggy/pasty.

About the gravy, while very rich, I was expecting more sausage bits. I'm gonna dock them .5 star for that.

Bubba's thick cut bacon was prepared exactly the way I like it: Extra crispy. But what the heck? Three slices of bacon normally is not nearly enough for a bacon maniac as I. Why do I feel so full? I only ate two itty bitty biscuits! What I'd normally consider a side dish was so filling!

That's all folks! The next time I'm in Dallas, I'm coming back to Bubba's and gonna have me some fried chicken!

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to stand in a quick line at a funky retro diner decor chicken place and have a greasy plate of heaven served to you?

Try Bubba's! The honey, biscuits, the whole package makes me go mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... a long deep and satisfying mmmm! I don't recommend the green beans, I do recommend everything else. My go to combo: Chicken, mash potatoes, and Cole slaw with a biscuit. I mean really people, need I say more?

the chicken really was great. perfectly crunchy. mashed potatoes.. mmmm! definitely freshly mashed. the green beans were good, but i like a lot of bacon in my greens.

the parking is just horrible, i know that's something to expect in snider plaza. also the price is something to expect in snider plaza. 11 bucks for a small plate of chicken? geez. give me babe's.. where at least i can have all you can eat sides!

Drool...Bubba's.  One of my favorite chicken fried, bypass inducing, greasy treats anywhere in the world.  Ever since I can remember, having grown up in that neighborhood, Bubba's has always been a fixture in every era of my life.  From the sneaking off campus lunches during high school, to meeting friends for a hearty, greasy, classic American hangover breakfast, Bubba's is a Dallas institution.

This is a southern soul food paradise in a neighborhood known for expensive restaurants, wealthy families, and SMU.  I'm pretty sure Bubba's has been around before any other building in the area.  I cannot confirm, but I'm pretty sure cowboys used to stop at Bubba's while on a cattle drive up early times Preston road.  Sarcasm aside, you need to try Bubba's at least once before you die, vegetarians included.  It's worth the cheat.

Starting with breakfast, Bubba's offers up some of the best biscuits and gravy in the world.  Aside from biscuits and gravy, they offer fresh cooked, classic American breakfast foods like eggs any way, thick bacon, sausage, pancakes, all kinds of breakfast biscuit sandwiches, and sinfully delicious, homemade cinnamon rolls.

If you've never heard of Bubba's, there's a good chance that you've heard of Babe's.  Babe's was born from Bubba's success and was opened, and owned, by the same family.  Juicy, southern fried chicken is what you can't miss out on after breakfast hours.  Whether you're into breasts, legs, thighs, wings, gizzards, livers, or tenders, Bubba's fries up all their chicken perfectly and oozing with greasy goodness.

You can't eat Bubba's without trying some of their delicious southern-style sides.  The mashed potatoes and gravy are so yummy.  You get the impression that your practically eating a stick of butter, and you likely are, but there is no mercy for the dieter at Bubba's.  Other favorites include the green beans, black-eyed peas, candied yams, and corn on the cob.  Every meal is topped off with a fluffy yeast roll that is commonly ingested with a heapin' helpin' of honey drizzled on top of it.

So if you've yet to try it, mosey on down today and indulge on all the fried goodness you can handle.  This is the bee's knees for fried chicken lovers!  Enjoy!

I've always been a fan of this chicken institution, but just fell in love with their biscuit breakfast sandwich.  It's wrapped in foil, so don't forget to unwrap before sticking it in the microwave (lesson leared).  It's a perfect greasy mix of cheese, egg, and ham---and i get a side of gravy to dip it in because it seems sacriligous to have biscuits any other way.  Just sayin'.
They have a drive thru, ya'll and open at 6:30!  Skip Mickey D's and re route tomorrow on your way to work.  (just pack your gym clothes so you don't feel too guilty all day).

While I was leaving from the SMU campus this afternoon, I got a hankering for some fried chicken.  I was going to go to KFC.  But then I said to myself, "Self, why don't you try Bubba's?"

    BEST DECISION EVER.

Got my food to go.  The biscuit (that I can only assume is made with some combination of crack, monk tears and unicorn byproducts) didn't even make it to 75.

The chicken tenders were really good.  Very fresh and juicy.  Coleslaw was decent.

Those biscuits though?  Next time, I'm ordering no less than 3.  I want another one RIGHT NOW.

Went for takeout last night...the line was long but moved fast.  Got a 3 piece chicken to go as well as the chicken strip dinner to go.  Service was quick but I thought one of the servers was a little rude.

Food was excellent but the chicken was smaller than usual and I ordered extra gravy (no charge) on my mash potato's after seeing the small amount dropped on there when it was being put together.

Other than that complaint...the food was great - it is about the best fried chicken you can get in Dallas - 4 stars - 3 for the service and 5 for the food.

    Oh Bubba!

This fried chicken makes you indulge like a glutton fool. Every time I eat here, I have to unbutton my pants and release a loud sigh that sounds slightly like "buuuuuuuubbbaaa' in slow motion. The chicken is plump and juicy and the skin is some good greasy stuff. What's even better are the oh-so-complimentary sides. The biscuits with honey, the green beans, the collard greens, the fried okra. Okay - I am salivating.

This Hillcrest establishment boasts a fun, lightheartedness, '50s diner vibe that makes the whole experience that much better. It's a laid back atmosphere with what seems to be a very loyal staff. I swear I have ordered from the same lady at the ordering counter every time.

If you are really brave like Andrew Zimmern or Anthony Bourdain, you should order the chicken gizzards. My crazy-ass aunt (who I have mentioned before) eats them like candy while I stare at her perplexed. She makes them look so good, but then I remember...it's chicken gizzard. Hmmmm...maybe someday. It's definitely on my food bucket list.

Oh! And their lemonade is the jam!

I'm constantly on the look out for non-Mexican food just in case we get some visitors that would not be impressed with my endless list of wonderful amazing Mexican fare.  I've had quite a few misses in the non-Mexican category, however, lucky for them, I tried Bubbba's.

If I do indulge in fried chicken, I have to admit it's usually only from KFC and is always a let down.  Something so high in calories should at least be worth the price and here, it is.  The outside of the fried chicken is crispy but not rock hard the the chicken inside is tender and juicy.  It also has flavor.  The mashed potatoes are good and the gravy isn't too heavy - it's just right (though Sameer is right about adding a little big of salt).  I opted for the green tomato relish for my side and I found it delightful.  It was a good tangy contrast to all the savory I had going on, on my plate.  OOO!  and the biscuits!  I can't forget those.  It was soft and warm on the inside with a bit of crust on the outside with butter and honey... those were really really good.

If you've been to Babe's Chicken Dinner House, then you know the food.  It's excellent.  Definitely some of the best comfort food you'll find.

Unfortunately, Bubba's suffers from really poor customer service.  My office orders a rather large order of meals on the same night of the week, each week.  It is one of our "food run traditions".  The person picking up the food oftentimes seems to encounter unnecessary attitude from the staff when they verify each order is correct...as if they are personally offended by our wanting our orders right.  The times orders weren't verified, something was always wrong or completely missing.  When the food runner called to correct the mistake, Bubba's staff members accused him lying and trying to steal from them by "claiming" certain orders were missing.

Perhaps this attitude is the result of dealing with high-maintenance Highland Park residents on a daily basis, but it's just not necessary and has made Bubba's a place I avoid...unless I'm forced to go by "office tradition".

Let's just go ahead and imagine that you have never had fried chicken. You were brought out from under your rock and were brought straight to Bubba's. From the first time you sink your teeth into the perfectly crispy, perfectly juicy, golden fried piece of heaven you will never look at a chicken the same way again, nor will you refer to anything else as "fried chicken" again. As Jackie and I sat across from each other enjoying the chicken, incredible sweet rolls, and down home sides, i looked at her and said "Do you think chickens know they are this delicious?"  ......Any questions???
P.S. I didn't like the green beans. I traditionally only like fresh veggies. i think I am a little scarred from my grade school cafeteria days. Nothing worse than mushy veggies!!

Heat lamp, sheep clamp. This diner is straight up rugged. At $8 a plate, you can get a wide array of southern goods at your disposal, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Yes, I am suggesting that you go for 3 meals in a day. Just to try everything... for good measure.

I walked in and saw that the combos were all pretty similar, so I went with what I like: fried chicken and chicken and dumplings. Ah yes... the greatness that is chicken and dumplings.

If you have been to Bubba's sister establishment, the infamous Babe's, then you know that the freshly fried stuff is pretty similar to tobacco to Texans. Well, the breaded, grease-soaked poultry here sits under heat lamps and is not quite up to Babe's standards, but it is still flavored perfectly, and it has a thick crust.

The green beans were alright, a tad bitter and watered down. The giant lima beans were good. The baked beans were rich and not overly sweet. The best side was probably just the yeast rolls. They had a nice sweetness and yeastiness.

Now based on the above review, it may seem that I thought the food was so-so, but the chicken and dumplings sealed the deal. The chicken was tender, the gravy-like soup was rich and savory, and the dumplings were moist and tender. Perfect.

Head over to Bubba's to look like a Bubba. For not too much dough, you can stuff yourself good. This no-frills eatery does not pressure you into being neat and fancy. Get your hands messy, there is a wet nap on you tray!

I really wanted to give this place five stars however a few items held me back. Ordered the chicken breast platter with fried okra. The chicken was cooked just perfectly. I would have put a little spice in the batter and laid off the salt a little. Otherwise this piece of chicken would have been outstanding. The service at the counter was quick, courteous and accurate. There is an annoying sign hanging from the coke dispenser that reads 25 cents for a refill. Give me a break. With the prices being charged for food and the drinks, filling up my coke glass with half a glass of coke should not cost me an extra 25 cents. There are some mints at the end of the coke machine. Why not eliminate those mints and make refills free. Seating is like at a 1920's dinner. Kind of neat in this day and time. Also there is no need to clean your table as wait staff will do that for you. Parking is limited---only 4 spaces out front. If you park on the street too long the local cop will give you a  ticket.

Reminds me of a KFC with a diner feel. In terms of food, this trumps KFC. I'm not a fan of fried chicken or anything fried in general, but I'm willing to eat here. The chicken is full of flavor with the right amount of crispiness. I also like their side items: baked green beans, mash potatoes, biscuits. Great place for a quick, cheap meal.

I have long been dormant from review writing (about a year now), but Bubba's has motivated me to jump back in. All other reviews here are spot on--the reason I add this is because:
a.)  I just discovered their bat-cave entrance DRIVE-THRU (accessible only from Snyder Plaza) which can get me in and out of there with breakfast in, like, 2 minutes.
    b.)  A biscuit & sausage sandwich w/*side* of gravy is--literally--2 dollars.  $2!!!! To quote a Seinfeld girlfriend: "They're real, and they're fantastic."
c.) The ladies at the counter and the drive-thru window seem to be genuinely happy to work there and are really nice to me every time.

My first venture here in a few years was only a couple of weeks ago. Got a biscuit, side of gravy and also the hash browns. At first, disappointment because the hash browns were actually breakfast potatoes or "home fries"--not actual hash browns. However, disappointment turned to GLEE quickly upon tasting them. They are perfect. PLUS--the awesome lady fixing my order stuck in a hunk of sausage not only in my container of gravy (bonus!), but there was also a hunk of it down under the hash browns!! (extra super-bonus).

Lunch? Babe's-style chicken? Excellent vegetable sides? Yes, definitely. All of that is true.

BUT DON'T FORGET TO GO FOR BREAKFAST! It is super cheap! And lastly, their gravy is real. Unless you're satisfied with thin wallpaper paste like most places have, you'll need to get yourself over here pronto.

My husband and I were very hungry one night and craving something fried with love.  After reading the reviews here we tried Bubba's.  If you have not been to Bubba's then WHAT ARE YOU STILL READING THIS FOR GET IN YOUR CAR AND GET THERE NOW!

This is some seriously good fried chicken and sides.  Imagine if you will perfectly crispy skin covering slightly spicy and moist meat.  This is enough alone to send anyone into a state of pure fried bliss add your choice of good ol' country sides like green beans (that are heavy on the bacon..mmmm) and mashed potatoes and you have a meal fit to fill that deepest desire for something fried and wonderful.

Next time: chicken and dumplings!   I've heard wonderful things about them.

Imagine an orgy in your mouth and only good looking people were invited! That's what it feels like once the chicken fried steak hits your lips!

This place is located near the SMU campus on the nicer end of Dallas. Nice homes, nice location... I like. The place itself is a little small with a 50 diner's twist... but it's kinda cute.

I have to say that if this was the ONLY place I stopped during my Dallas tour, I wouldn't be upset. YOU MUST COME HERE! I came here with a bunch of my buddies and we only heard good things about it... we ordered about half the menu and gave stupid names at the counter like "Rambo," "Dicky Roberts," "Mandingo." Actually, I was the only guy who gave a stupid name... I just wanted to hear the nice Latina lady say, "Deek-ee Roh-Berto, jur orden esta listo."

    What to order:
Anything on the menu... I based this statement because of the Cole Slaw... I freakin' hate Cole Slaw, but if an establishment makes me eat ALL my veggie group... I'm sure everything is awesome here!

Bubba's never disappoints.  The service is quick, and the food is always fresh compared to most take-out chicken places.  For people that rave about Raising Canes, you must try this place (as it's only about 5 mins away). They're not in the same league.

A half-order of chicken strips includes a roll and a side. The fact that it only costs $6.25 is crazy. A full-order runs about $9 and is enough for two people.  Their fried chicken is perfectly cooked. The rolls are insanely good; you usually have to be at someone's family dinner to get a roll like that. Get the Plugra butter too. Good eats.

I love love LOVE this place!! Serious southern cooking. So good.

Fried catfish, fried chicken, french fries, biscuits and gravy, thick cut bacon, scrambled eggs, cherry cobbler, green beans, mashed potatoes. These are all the items I would absolutely recommend you try.

Each plate goes for around $5-10, which usually includes a main entree and two sides.

The parking situation is OK. There aren't a lot of spots directly near the restaurant, and the drive thru is very short, which doesn't allow a lot of cars to be in the drive thru line at the same time. But for the quality of the food, it is not a big deal at all.

Aaaah, Bubba's. Reliable diner grub. Only been here for breakfast, but I've never been disappointed. Generally snappy and polite service, hearty biscuits and gravy. Warm & cozy ambience makes for a nice, slow, euphoric wake-up on a chilly fall morning.

...or perhaps my memories of Bubba's are rosily-tinted by the cool company I find myself in whenever patronizing this joint. Hmmm....

The best fried chicken in Dallas. Best if you get the 1 pound of chicken and share with friends. The barbeque sauce is also amazing.

So, I am considering Bubba's to cater a lunch for 60 for my work and as I was driving home last night, I felt compelled to at least try them before I signed up for an event.

So I drove through and ordered an 8-piece pack ($14.99), which comes with four rolls to feed to my family of four.  Knowing that my rotten kids wouldn't eat the sides, I just got an additional mashed potato side and planned on adding to the sides at home.

I am somewhat of a fried chicken snob.  I make really great homemade fried chicken, but I never make it anymore because it is messy and fattening.  I never eat restaurant fried chicken, because it never measures up to homemade.  I may have met my match with Bubba's.  The chicken was a huge hit and the pieces were quite large.  It is really spectacular, perfect ratio of crust to chicken, the chicken was tender and juicy.  If there is a Bubba's or a Babes anywhere even close to you, never be tempted by chicken from the big chains again.  This wasn't just a little better, it was in a class by itself.  The rolls are dense and flavorful.  The mashed potatoes were a bit salty to me, but the gravy was very very good.

Now I wish I'd tried some of the other sides.  I am considering adding fruit salad, green beans and cole slaw for my catered event.  I am also struggling between the cherry cobbler or the apricot fried pies for dessert.  I may have to go back!

So we found this place on yelp and it got quite a lot of good reviews so decided to try it.  We ordered chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and red beans as the sides.

The chicken fried steak at first blush wasn't special at all.  But after a bit more contemplation and reflection, it's pretty good.  The meat tasted fresh but of course the fried batter shell over it kind of offsets that in the health department.  Not enough gravy on our entree but we could've asked for more I bet.  Side orders were good too.

The entree came with a roll-biscuit hybrid of sorts.  It was unique to me.  The muffin top was a roll but the contents tasted more like a biscuit.

Parking was hard to find.  But I will say it's not as bad as many other places near the area.  There's s huge parking lot area with plenty of 2hr limit parkings.  You can't miss it since there's this humongous Christmas tree at the center.  Of course, it is nearing Christmas season so that landmark might not be there all the time.

Staff was okay.  Nothing particular to point out.

#5 (fried chicken strips) with mashed potato's and green beans, gravy on the side, YES PLEASE!
I've been eating at Bubba's since I was a kid and then I really hit it hard while at SMU.
    Greatness, always hot and consistent.
Breakfast is spectacular too, biscuits and gravy or pancakes!

Bubba's is an institution. They have great fried chicken, good catfish and their mashed potatoes and green beans are mouthwatering. If the rolls are hot and fresh they are excellent (throw some honey and butter on em for full effect). Worth mentioning is that Babe's Chicken is a sister restaurant to Bubba's and is as good if not better, with locations all around the metroplex.

Oh yeah did I mention their breakfast? It's DANK.

I like fried chicken as much as the next guy but I don't see what all the hype is about.

The chicken is kept under heat lamps and it is marginally better than KFC, but more than marginally more expensive.

The rolls taste like normal rolls, albeit a bit more buttery.

I think Popeye's is better and cheaper.
