I have never had a bad experience here, Its a nice place to eat for lunch when we go to the Aquarium next door.
4 stars for the steamed clams & muscles appetizer. Everything else is OK, but the atmosphere is fun and the trivia is fun no matter how many times you've heard it.
Also anywhere you sit inside pretty much every table has a view of the ocean, on the day we went we got to see the coast guard helicopter doing some kind of training mission or something. It was pretty low to the water and pretty close (like 500 yards away).
Oh and on our last visit one of the waitress told me the place used to be called Rusty Pelican. I always wondered what happened to them.. -
Review from Jen H.
Solid 3 stars!
Why: Great company, okay service, fairly good food, and great ambiance/view of the ocean.
Yes, yes, I know...total tourist trap, but some of the folks wanted to go, so I gave in. I haven't been back to Bubba Gump since 2008, and the overall experience was good.
Surprisingly, the portion size is smaller than I expected, so for late lunch/early dinner, aka "lunner," it was kinda pricey.
We came here around 4pm, and waited for about 30 minutes to be seated.
We ordered:
1) Frizzled Onion String: 2/5--eh, definitely not good at all. I prefer onion rings.
2) Bourbon Street Mahi Mahi: 4/5--Surprisingly really tasty; the con is the portion size is pretty small for a $20 dish
3) Shrimp New Orleans: 2.5/5, eh, this was just okay
4) Cajun Shrimp: 3/5, good, but not really worth the $--the shrimps were tiny!
5) Bubba's After the Storm "Bucket of Boat Trash"-3/5 Good--i think this meal was definitley the only "bang for your buck" meal at our table that evening.
Ah, we all got a Margarita with an upside corona bottle in it and we didn't check the price. It was close to $11/each!! -

When we had kids at home, we'd hit here after hitting the Monterey Aquarium....'cause it is REALLY well set up for dealing with the wondering minds of children. And, the food is perfect for kids. Greasy fried stuff.
We thought we'd left Bubba Gumps FAR behind...but noooooOOOOoooo....our motorcycle club decided to hit up BGSC after a cruise down the coast to Monterey.
Being team players, the wife and I took one for the team, and figured "how bad could it be again"....keeping in mind neither one of us likes fried food, of course.
I ordered a burger (a safe bet) and she ordered calamari (as fried foods good, always safe).
(hit loser buzzer here).
Burger was a sopping mess. Calamari was overcooked ('course, I pointed out to her that that's FAR better than undercooked...she didn't grasp the point, it seems).
Bottom line....this is a tourist trap in a tourist town (it's my hometown, I can say that).
There are SOOOOOO many better places to grab a bite on Cannery Row. If you have kids who insist, by all means go and be trapped. Otherwise, go elsewhere. -

The place is a total gimmick. First time I've eaten at a Bubba Gump. In order to like the place, you would REALLY have to like the movie. The food was over priced and not that good.

Good food and excellent service! Never a big fan of fried food, so I ordered New Orleans and Net Catches. Both were really tasty! Their fruit lemonade and Mama's short cake was a plus! Ocean View was wonderful! I would highly recommend this place expect that it's a little pricy.

Despite the loud atmosphere, it always being crowded, and the pricey food, I love Bubba Gump's! It's cute though it's a bit of a tourist trap, and the service is always friendly. The food is great though and I love that you can take home the light up cups that come with some of the drinks. It's always fun and one of my favorite restaurants in Monterey.

I've actually been to this tourist trap quite a few times. None by my own choosing.
I like the appetizer shrimp with cajun seasoning and garlic bread to eat the appetizer shrimp with but skip the rest. Just come here for appetizers and drinks. The drinks are also pretty good too. They have things like white trash margaritas. There is wayyyy better food elsewhere in Monterey. -
Review from Carol T.
I don't know what's the hype, since this place came out of "Forrest Gump" (I came here due to that movie). Overall I came upon this place after the Aquarium, and it was close by, and wanted to try it out. The service is really great, our waitress helped us with the menu & what she would recommend eating @ the restuant. Food was decently good, yet our son was getting a bit rowdy, so we had to eat twice as fast.
Overall the food is good, yet it's pretty pricey for it's worth. We ended up paying for about $60-$75 for one appetizer, two entrees and probably a dessert. I think money's worth, I could've gone somewhere else. Overall I'm giving this place a 3.5 stars. -

Two stars? Yea and two is a gift
I offer up a rating of two stars for two reasons. The first star is because I stayed and ate my food. In order for me to rate less than one star i think i would have to have left before even eating the meal.
The second star is for the help; our waitress was nice and pleasant to interact with.
Where are the other three stars? Well not in the food, menu or atmosphere that's for sure. This location is located on an ocean shore line but still the seafood was no where near par. It is expensive and disappointing; if you are in the area look elsewhere. -

My husband and I came here for the first time on 3/3/12, celebrating our anniversary. We had a very positive experience. Our waitress was very friendly and she knew her stuff.
The food was great. I ordered "Bubba's Bucket of Trash". It consisted of fried shrimp, fried fish, Canadian lobster claws, french fries and came with a side of slaw. It was really tasty! My husband ordered "Shrimp Heaven", which consisted of shrimp cooked 3 different ways and fries. He said it was delicious!
I also ordered a Beach Bum and Lt. Dan's Punch. The Beach Bum is definitely worth the $12.95....they do not skimp on the alcohol. The Lt. Dan's Punch was really tasty and more my style. I like fruity drinks. And to top it off, you get to keep the glass!
With two entrees, garlic bread for an appetizer and 4 drinks, we spent $110.00. I say it was worth the $ spent.
Also, while we were waiting for our food, the waitress stopped by our table and gave us a little quiz on the movie. It was fun and passed a little of the time waiting for our food.
We had a great time and would definitely recommend this restaurant!! -

I took my wife and two young kids here. It's a pretty decent kids environment - pretty loud with lots of things to look at and crayons and paper for drawing. Other than that, it's over priced very poor quality food and drinks. Service was also horrible.

Unless you have a fried food only diet, do not go here as their speciality is deep frying everything! I am surprised their logo is not deep fried!

The customer service was really great! I had a mango lemonade smoothies with a little of kettle one and it taste really good where I can't taste the alcohol. We order a popular dish that people order the cajun shrimp. It was not my kind of flavor, it taste like chilly powder on shrimp. Ate some crab too, steam crab is not good. Good location where its surrounded with many stores, antiques stores and the aquarium.

I have yet to have a bad experience with these guys. If you're going to eat on cannery row, and you want good customer service, I'd say this is a good place. I've eaten here on three separate trips, and have yet to be let down. The food is good, but I either usually order a burger or sandwich so I can't really compare what the other food is like.
All I can say is, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, the view, and most importantly the service. Our drinks were never empty and we didn't have to wait long. Our waiters came and checked up on us from time to time.
Good job guys! -

We ate here one afternoon after visiting the aquarium (which is really close by). Though I have never tried Bubba Gump's, considering it's a chain restaurant, I kinda already knew what to expect.
We decided to sit outside, even though it was getting cooler (they had giant outdoor heaters anyways). Our server was really cool. Very helpful and attentive. For an appetizer, we tried the 1 1/3 lb shrimper's net catch. It was funny to see all that shrimp disappear. Their entrees were very good (I had the "...Of Course We Have Scampi"). The portions are big, of course, and the dishes were well prepared. All the choices sounded good, so the most difficult part of the meal was actually choosing one. For desert, we tried the sampler - bread pudding, biscuit, and chocolate chip sundae. Delicious! For the price, I thought it was a good deal. We left satisfied. -

The bar area could really use an upgrade. Instead of four or five tiny, older TVs, they should get a couple large flat screens. I would come here and watch ballgames if they did this.
The dining area is cool, you can sit in or out depending on the weather. The food is what you'd expect from any chain, decent enough to keep things afloat. The employees seem nice, which is cool because you don't always get that in a tourist area.
Basically, given the location and room available, this place could really turn into a cool spot. -

New York, NY
First time at bubba gumps. I never tried the bubba gumps in Times Square (From NYC) because it didn't make sense for me to eat seafood if I am not near a bay.
We requested to sit by the window because of the nice view, but it took a while to get seated by the window even on a Tuesday afternoon.
For appetizer, we had what I believe to be "Fisher's Net" or something in that sort. The shrimps' coating was decent, but when we peeled the shrimp, it was really bland. I can't seem to recall the food we ordered, but I found none of them to be spectacular.
I did enjoy my frozen mango lemonade and kept the free glowing cup. -

The waitresses are cute, we got most of the trivia questions right, and the environment is fun. I didn't expect great food, and I didn't get it. What I got was cute cousins laughing and coloring as they sipped milk shakes from flashing soda glasses.
It is what it is. Not more. Not less. -

Totally doing the tourista thing in Monterey. The bf really wanted to go there and I thought why not, this could be super fun and I LOVE the movie, so lets know what we're getting into and enjoy the classic rock soundtrack.
People need to relax and lighten up, it's a fun place to go, and their pricing for seafood was pretty decent.
The bf had total entree envy over my bucket o' seafood -- he had a shrimp dish.
They only get three stars because the lobster claws were super duper "I was cooked 4 hours ago" dry and flavorless but the crab legs were absolutely delicious beyond belief!
I would totally go back there again and next time just order the bucket of crab legs. -

We ate here after the aquarium. We had to wait although it, it was late in the day. Service was friendly but SLOW. The appetizer we ordered arrived only moments before food which was at least 30 minutes in arrival. The food was only so so at best. We ordered shrimp, mostly fried, which looked like it was pressed out of a mold. Just OK an overpriced at 16.99. Chowder was inedible. I can't believe anyone like this sort of mediocracy. The upsell to buy drinks is very pushy. There is not a drink worth they charge.

Our server sucked we had a big party and she just count Handel it. We asked for three separate checks she never forgot a couple drinks for our kids which is really important considering the get restless and then she forgot two meals and at the end she came over with the bill wanting us to basically re-order so she could write it all back down again lame we were there for 3 1/2 hours come on way to long

This is close to the aquarium, so convenient. But the food is just mediocre and way overpriced for what it is. It is also a very noisy place, but it was nice to take a break from the aquarium and get out of the rain quickly (walking distance). It was around noon and we were seated immediately. Note: if you just want to get out of the rain or sit down for a quick lunch, there are restaurants within walking distance in all directions.

Bubba Gump has always been pretty decent. It's not like I can't live without the food here. It's definitely A-OK. I ordered the Fishermans Net (shrimps)? with Cajun and Butter Garlic Sauce. Both the sauces were okay, it wasn't anything special. I had the Blueberry Lemonade with alcohol, but with me being a light weight and usually getting buzzed off the first drink and drunk by the third drink, I can say that this lemonade barely had any alcohol in it. But it was a penny for about $11.99 for a blueberry lemonade. (you get to keep the cup though). Would I come back? Yes I've been back a few time because the view is great!!!!

If you like shrimp and liked the movie Forest Gump, then this is the place for you. Food is really good and service is friendly. Wait time isn't too bad either. Restrooms should be better since this is also a touristy kind of restaurant and in a touristy area. Will go back in the future if I am in the area.

Review from Matty K.
A group of us girls thought it would be fun (and expensive) to do the tourist thing, so we came to Monterey. What is more touristy than Bubba Gump? We were greeted and followed the smileys. We were seated promptly and started ordering.
Atmosphere: It's a quirky chain based on Forrest Gump. The theme reflects that. It's definitely a family/group environment. The view is quite nice however, we sat at a table along the water.
Service: Friendly, quick, efficient. She checked on us several times.
Food: It's a meh, but I give it one more because my friends enjoyed their food very much and since I felt I had a skewed experience with the vegetarianism and all.
Clam Chowder: Small bowl, my friend doused it with some Bubba Gump hot sauce and annihilated it.
Mama Gump's Garlic Bread Basket: Scant portion, two small pieces does not make a basket. Tasted kinda floury. No on really cared for it, but we were starving, so we ate it.
Bubba's Far Out Dip: Comes with plenty of chips, but tasted plasticky.
Pear and Berry Salad w/o chicken: Yuck. Huge portion of spring mix with a vinaigrette, strawberries, raspberries, and sliced pears. I could have made it better at home.
I'm Stuffed Shrimp: Birthday girl had this and liked it.
Lt. Dan Drunken Shrimp: Friend loved it, it was a little spicy.
Shrimper's Net Catch: Comes in a little pot, they dump it all over your tray for you which ends up making a huge mess. My girlfriend raved about it.
Overall: Come for the atmosphere and if you like shrimp (duh). Try to pass if you are a vegetarian. Kinda wished our server would've noticed I only ate two bites of my salad and asked about it, but she didn't and I'm not much to make a scene. -

For Nick's grandma, the convenience of location/hours, and the foggy weather you don't want to drive in, we ate at Bubba Gumps. We were greeted at the entrance and were told to follow the happy faces.. (a long trail of happy faces).. until we made it to the hostess stand where someone led us to a booth.
Our server pointed out the license plates on the table: one meaning you're good and the other would wave him down for attention. I guess that didn't mean anything to him because even though ours was blue and we never needed to flip it in need of him, he always came back and talked to us about bullshit.. even pulled up a seat with us and talked. It was bizarre. It was loud.
Our server recommended an appetizer, which, we ordered. Never got. Our server said , "Oh, I was wondering why it showed up at that other table when they didn't order it. That other table got your appetizer. Do you still want it?"
Our entrees were really good, though. Our drinks-- really sweet, not so much alcohol. We ordered dessert and our server came back and told us good news and bad news.. bad news: they didn't have the dessert we ordered and good news: the dessert he recommended when we ordered the dessert we wanted was still available.
Some points just in case your server barrages you into a game of trivia with a nearby booth.. the answers are on your table. I, on the other hand, knows now that I need to lie and say I've never seen the movie in hopes it won't happen again. We just wanted to eat, dude.
I've eaten at a Bubba Gumps before and I don't remember the staff being so engaging. But.. I was impressed that Bubba Gumps is still alive even almost 20 years after Forrest Gump. -

Service was great. Unfortunately I left feeling really sick to my stomach. I am really picky about shrimp...I prefer mine to be cleaned and de-veined. I almost walked out after I picked up the 2nd shrimp and found it to not be cleaned, much like the first.
The highlight to the meal was the strawberry lemonade. -

Medford, OR
Well, it's not like we didn't know what to expect. Margarita was generous in volume, but I can't say as to how much tequila was in there. The retaurant in Maui served a very credible Ceviche; the comparable dish here wasn't nearly as fresh nor interesting. My salad (with pear, strawberries and added shrimp) was pretty good. Service was generally good. Dessert looked promising but it was substantially delayed. After telling the manager that our strawberry shortcake arrived WITHOUT any strawberries (literally) he offered to discount dessert 50%.
The view was terrific, but we'll make other plans next time. -

We went out to this place on the occasion of my son-in-law's birthday. The staff puts on a real production for birthdays. They sing a birthday song that was quite catchy and different from the standard birthday song. They gave him a pudding cup for free for his birthday. My wife, daughter and son-in-law attended the dinner. The whole place is based on the movie "Forest Gump". The waitress asked us some questions about the movie. In what grade did Forest meet Jenny? A. Kindergarten. What college did Forest attend? A. University of Alabama. What President did Forest meet? A. John F. Kennedy. What sport did Forest play in college? A. Football. My daughter answered all of the questions correctly.
The food was great, I had the bucket of trash after a storm. I received a bucket filled with shrimp, crab, lobster, and other fish. It was so tasty that my wife and daughter wanted to taste some of my food. My wife could not finish her plate and had to take home a doggy bag. The view from the dining room is really something! My son-in-law said that they used to have a bucket of shrimp on the menu, but they no longer have it. He said they used to fill up the same bucket I had with different kinds of shrimp. I was in the Salinas/Monterey area to visit my wife's cousin in the hospital. After our visit with him we decided to have dinner at Bubba Gump's. We all enjoyed the evening, the food and the service. We only had to wait about five minutes before our table was called. I gave them five stars because I had such a good time in the place. I recommend the "bucket of trash after the storm". -

I went here with a group of about 20 people for a party. This is not a place to have a group of people
They sat us in two separate tables. The place was loud, so we could not really have a conversation or try each others food. There was another large party next to us, and they were as frustrated as we were.
There is nothing healthy on this menu. Everything seems to be fried, so if you have someone who is on a diet, go somewhere else.
Almost everyone liked the food. The two who were unhappy all ordered non fish items. The hamburger was like a hockey puck, and the steak was incredibly tough.
The staff was really great and attentive. The made the event. We probably had 5 different people working the table.
All in All, I would not go here again, but some of the people who were with me really enjoyed it. -

Tourist Trap. Overpriced. Hour long wait. Really loud inside!
That being said. I LOVE this place. I eat at one of the Bubba Gump locations MAYBE once a year. I can handle the price for that amount of frequency. They're only where tourists go (from my experience) - but it's great seafood!
We went as a group of four - and there was an hour long wait. They give you a time to come back - not one of those buzzer coasters. So we walked up the street to the Cannery Row Brewing Company while we waited. Came back a few minutes early - and got seated right away - and by the window! (So learn how to appropriately kill time people!)
It was a Saturday night and it was EVERYONE's birthday. But the guy doing the whole song and dance was funny - so what! It was also my fiance's birthday the next day - soooooo watching him tense up every time they walked out clapping was pretty hilarious.
The drinks are most definitely overpriced. They try to compensate you with some of the drinks by giving you a receipt you can exchange at the gift shop for a shaker to take home. The food is not really THAT overpriced, but it is overpriced.
My suggestions: GET the shrimp sampler! It's so much shrimp and soooo good! You will have to ask for extra sauces because they don't give you nearly enough though. The fish and chips is VERY good! I couldn't imagine how much leftovers I would have had if I had got the extra portion (for an extra $3.50).
PLUS I love Forrest Gump! That will be one of my favorite movies forever. So maybe if you don't appreciate the movie - you won't get this place. But that's a SHAME ON YOU not a shame on them. They're awesome and you're not (in that case).Listed in: Food! I like it!, Monterey! Oh yea!

Marina, CA
Wow, can we change the name of this restaurant to Haters Unlimited? Seriously, how many times are repeat reviewers (yes, repeat reviewers) going to bash this place to promote their redundant and often obnoxious "opinion-as-fact" banter? I'd consider myself a local, I've been in this area on and off for the better part of 20 years and even though Bubba Gump's is far from perfect (they don't claim to be), it's certainly not as horrendous as people are letting on.
Sure, this place is louder than normal. I'll let you in on a little secret...come closer....BUBBA GUMPS IS FOR TOURISTS!! A little trivia for the masses: Why do you think there are Bubba locations popping up in some of the most desirable tourist locations domestically and internationally? Oooh, ooh, I KNOW! Bubba Gump's is a tourist-driven franchise. People from around the world have seen the multiple-Oscar award winning Forrest Gump. Viewing the restaurant not only evokes memories of the film but piques one's curiousity as well. That's all part of the allure with Bubba Gump's, it's passive marketing.
I guess the cool thing to do as a hipster-type local is to bash anything that isn't a local owned business. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for locally owned businesses, however, there is no need to continually spew unwarranted anti-corporate sentiment because it gives you a heightened sense of feigned self-righteousness. I read some of these reviews and it makes me ashamed to be from this area. I really do grow weary of the pretentious, elitist, entitled types that inundate Coastal Monterey County. Enough with my diatribe and on to what's really important, the experience.
Depending on what time of week you go to Bubba's will dictate the tempo for the rest of your time there. If it's slammed, expect to wait anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour to be seated. If it's a non-peak day, you can typically be seated immediately. Once you are seated, you are asked for your drink order. When the waiter/waitress returns, appetizers can be ordered at this time, my personal favorite being the Bucket of Boat Trash. The Bucket of Boat Trash is essentially a bucket filled with Hush Puppies with some sort of tangy sauce to accompany them. I apologize for not having a menu right in front of me, but they are very good nonetheless.
A couple of years ago, in between your appetizer order and actual meal, a waiter/waitress would accost your party and arbitrarily ask questions about Forrest Gump while you waited for your meal. I've only been here a couple of times since then, but it seems like they've gone with a less aggressive approach, which is definitely a welcome change. As cool as that part was the first couple of times, you really didn't want to bothered with it after a while.
The food here isn't spectacular, but it's still good. The Bourbon Street Mahi-Mahi, Coconut Shrimp and Shrimp Po-Boy are among the best items that are offered at Bubba Gump's.
The solution is simple for the complainers, if you do not like Bubba Gump's......stop going there, it doesn't get any easier than that. -

Went to bubba gumps back in November but just made my profile on yelp. Do not recommend this place to anyone. We often are in Monterey with the kids and decided to give this tourist trap a shot after an aquarium visit. Should have sucked it up and went charthouse down the street. After waiting to get our order taken after a half hour then when we got our food...oh after my wife and kids got their food. They finished and I had yet to get my food. My wife had to track down someone to let them know I hadn't receive my order. No one ever at anytime offered to comp or appologize for me not getting my food. The atomosphere is loud and small. And the food is not good at all, well the little I did taste. So if you tourist want waste your money and time going to bubba gumps have at it....now we know why we stay away from typical tourist spots.

MEH indeed. I have had people tell me they like this place and I am wondering why now.
PROS:It was right on the water and within walking distance of the aquarium. Food did not taste bad. They made a substitution for me and did not charge for it. My husbands fish and chips platter was the best thing we ordered and that was just the fish part.
CONS: Slow service and mediocore food. I had some Mahi Mahi that was dry on the outside and covered in sauce some kind of flatty sauce they called "bourbon sauce." The fries were luke warm. The popcorn shrimp was simply boring. The kids mac and cheese was like any packaged mac and cheese. Of course, it was expensive when the food was just ok, ok as in as good as some frozen dinners you could pick up at a grocery.
I will not be back, ever. -

Fries were decent. Garlic bread was NASTY- drenched in butter and not baked enough where the tops were brown. It was just bright yellow. The garlic shrimp "Net Catch" was edible but several of the shrimp were not sliced on the top. Most of them were not de-veined and still had their poo staring right at you. The one dessert ice cream cake looked HUGE and amazing!

Nice, very family oriented place to have some seafood and a good time. The theme and decor is appropriate for the name. The staff is down to earth friendly. Food is good but a bit overpriced. Almost all the tables have a high hair with kids or babies in tow. So if you're single and looking for a place to grab drinks, you might feel out of place.

Cute tourist trap and family friendly :)
If you have food allergies and don't want to take any chances with stomach problem on your vacation, this is the place to go. They are very, very, very careful handling your food once you tell them you have certain food allergy. We told them we needed gluten free for MDH and they even made sure his dish was delivered separately to prevent contamination from our dishes. The manager came out and told us that they even make sure the dish was made with separate area, utensils, etc... Kudos!
Our 7 and 3 year olds were entertained by the decor.

Not so good for decent food. Lots of greasy fried stuff. The place to go with rowdy friends who want to slurp beer, eat fried stuff and make noise.
It's all depending on your mood. Don't blame me if you gain a lot of pounds.
