What a loss...This place was great and will be missed dearly! Great family run business I'm sorry to see them closed. They had the best Chicken Salad sandwiches. And the man that ran the business always recognized my face whenever I walked in.

Not what I think of when the word "deli" hits my ear. No huge deli case. Not like what you see in NYC. Then you eat one of their sandwiches and maybe you let it slide. I sure did.
My first visit to Bryn Mawr Deli (BMD) occurred this past weekend. I was on babysitting duty and the boy and I ventured out to enjoy the nice fall, 85-degree day. My order consisted of the Italian Sub, always my default when I try a new deli.
The sandwich, while not a behemoth, was certainly big. Filled with all the good ham, salami, pepperoni, cheese, and peppers a dude could want. The roll was fresh. Flaky and firm on the outside, soft on the inside and it really soaked up the oil, mustard, and mayo (I was going balls to the wall on this sammy). Pair it with a cream soda and I was in sandwich-hog heaven. Good thing Jack and I were walking home. Jack only ate a Mum-Mum, so he didn't need to walk, just me.
The place is cool. Clean and well lit, with nice tables and a friendly guy behind the counter. Also, the Bear game was on. I'm looking forward to heading back for the corned beef. -

This place rocks!
1. Fresh ingredients (the lettuce was GREEN, not limp and pathetic)
2. Flavorful sandwiches, including panini offerings
3. Awesome prices ~ $5 average for a sandwich
4. They use REAL bread, not the crappy Subway stuff...
5. Fabulous bottled soda made with cane sugar!! yum!
6. Friendly staff
7. Hellllo--right near the Red Line, so no excuses ;)
It's homey. Go. Eat. Read the newspaper. Heck, write your Yelp review there--free Wifi :) -

I concur with every five star review about this place. I came here with a friend my frist time and was treated like an old friend by the gentleman behind the counter. I wanted a buffalo chicken sandwich, and he gave me a sample of the chicken first to make sure I'd like it and it wasn't too spicy. Well, it was fantastic. We sat at a table while he made our sandwiches himself, and he even carried them out to us, so nice. He recommended that next time I try the buffalo chicken on a panini, so I did and it was awesome.
The deli also has one or two homemade soups and chili that change every now and then. Sandwiches are relatively inexpensive and made with really fresh ingredients. You can find unusual drinks here, like blueberry or grape flavored soda. If you want somethin custom made, it's not a problem at all. It's not that often you can find a place with amazing food and extraordinary service. -

Great sandwiches.
My cousin and I bought some sandwiches and were enjoying the time(spent about $8 bucks each). His girlfriend walks in (cute white girl) manager asked if she wanted anything, She said she WASN'T hungry. He says, you must try the soup its good. Gave her a free bowl. A BOWL! Me and cousin share a look. He saw it, so he says.. "oh, the spicy chicken salad is great, you try", offered us a taste on a fork.
It was good, so purchased a spicy chicken salad sandwich to go. Panini was awesome. Menu items are $4+, sandwich+drink+side could be less than $7 dollars.
They had hookahs in the store, not sure if they were for sale or if you could smoke them.
--went in today for takeout, 3-27-2007. Everyone loved the sandwiches, panini's were extra loved. Its great that they will add hot peppers on any sandwich and its not extra. Reza is a engaging nice guy. Asked if I worked local, etc. I mentioned I'd been in before and live a few miles away and really wanted their sandwiches. He was happy about that. He shared the happiness by offering me some free chips and a few pickles. Yum! Honestly I would've just paid for it.
Oh. The hookahs were for sale. He sold the ones he had. But, if you are interested, ask about it, he can get more. -

If you have a friend I highly recommend you stop by after work for the happy hour deal. It's basically "buy one sandwich or sub, get another sandwich or sub for an extra $2." My friend and I each got one of the buffalo chicken salad sandwiches and it came out to less than $5 each with the deal.
The sandwiches were pretty good. The bread was excellent. I really liked the guy working behind the counter (the owner I think) - he was pretty cool. I really liked the whole atmosphere of the place (although we took our food to go). I think I could go up to 5 stars if I end up getting a sandwich that is a little more traditional. Don't get me wrong, the one I ordered was good, but I think this place would really shine with the cold cuts as opposed to the weird stuff. I'll find out at some point, because I'll be back. -

Really great place to eat. Very laid back - even though you order at the counter, you don't have to pay until after you've eaten. Great sandwiches, great selection of drinks....overall a great place.
The atmosphere within the restaurant is very nice. Interesting art adorns the walls and apparently you can buy it if you're interested enough.
The owner was very nice. I was short a few cents and he spotted me even though it was the first time that I'd ever been there. He was warm and had some great suggestions when I was creating my sandwich (because I really had no idea what was good).
One bad thing though, I've heard from a few people (this could be a total rumor) that the owner is thinking of turning it into a wine shop and ditching the whole deli...to him I say PLEEAAAAASE keep this place open. It's my main destination when I get out to Chicago! -

Subway? No way. Potbelly's? Poor buddy. Jimmy John's. What's with the commercials?
Nope, when I'm looking for a HUGE, high quality sammy, there's one place I turn: Bryn Mawr deli. This is the epitome of your typ 'neighborhood deli' - tons of delicious options, friendly owners and staff, great prices and a few kitschy bistro tables to support your mortadella-consuming bum while you enjoy the best sandwich in the 'hood.
Bryn Mawr has recently become my Saturday afternoon staple (don't tell Costello's). A seriously impressive menu of subs, paninis, salads, etc. If you take more than five seconds to order, the owner will inevitably shove about half a dozen free samples your way. In fact, by the time you do decide what you want, you're prolly already half way full, but how could you pass up the real deal?
They have one of the best Reuben's I've had in the area and the Bryn Mawr special seriously weighs about as much as a newborn... elephant. Share with a friend.
So if you're looking for a great sammy at a healthy price, Bryn Mawr's got it. And they have a happy hour, too.
Enter the sam-man. -

Prrrretty good!
There are quick to go options up at the register as well as freshly prepared sandwiches, wraps, or salads.
I went with the custom wrap option and it was awesome. Although, if you ask for dijon you better really like dijon because it was loaded. I was able to scrape some of it off so that my nose wasn't burning and taste buds exploding. Also, go for the black cherry soda, it's frickin' amazing! -

I just tried this place out for the first time this weekend. Reza, the owner, is very nice... I told him it was my first time in and he gave me a cookie AND a diet coke. Nice!! It's a cute, clean place... nothing fancy... and that's okay with me.
I had an Italian Sub... offered to heat it, so I let him. It was probably 10" with about an inch of meat on it. I could only eat half of it and was stuffed. I (of course) managed to pack in the oatmeal raisin cookie and it was pretty good...
It's nice to see a friendly face waving at you from the shop. I'm glad I stopped!Listed in: My Neighborhood, Cheap Eats

I have lived a block away from this deli for about 9 months now, and today I finally decided to give it a try. I had a corned beef sandwich (one of the specials today) and a bowl of chili to go.
The sandwich was pretty good, served on fresh bread with great quality vegetables (really green lettuce, ripe tomatoes) with tons of mayo/mustard on BOTH sides of the sandwich. Yummers.
Did not enjoy the chili so much, but I am very picky when it comes to chili - I like runny, soupy chili with lots of chunks of tomatoes and peppers and other veggies and meat (believe it or not, Wendy's chili is my fave). This chili was the total opposite, thick and chock full of beans and potatoes. Not so great in my book, but if you like hearty chili, check it out.
The deli's owner that everyone talks about was not around, but the girl at the counter was pleasant, humming along to the oldies playing in the background. Lots of seats available, there were only a few patrons who appeared to be taking advantage of the free wi-fi.
I'll be back to try some other items, fo' sho'.Listed in: Bryn Mawr, Kenmore...gimme…

I love this little deli. The owner is there all the time and he is great especially to his regulars. I just noticed a sign up last time I went after giving him my debit card that said you had to have a minimum of $10 purchase before using the card. Mine was $7 and some cents and I didn't see the sign until after and he told me not to worry about it because he knew his customers. Apparently, he gets a lot of people just buying soda or something and putting it on a card and he gets charged $0.89 every time he swipes a card so the minimum makes perfect sense. He handled it like a gentleman with me though.
I have been here a few times and I haven't been disappointed. I love their paninis the most. They spray oil and sprinkle herbs on the bread and then grill it to a cheesy buttery perfection. So far I've only tried the pizza panini and the Italian panini but I've enjoyed both of them. He usually has specials going on for half a sandwich and a small cup of soup or something similar.
Recently this place has also put a sign up asking artists who are interested in selling their art in the restaurant to call him. I think it is awesome that he's really getting involved with his customers and the neighborhood around him. These kind of actions make this deli stand out amongst the rest.
Definitely try it out!Listed in: Edgewater

I've lived in the neighborhood for 3 years now, and love Bryn Mawr Deli!
Reza, the owner, is so kind. He's the type of guy who will wave when you walk to the train in the morning, let you come in out of the rain, give you a free cookie if he can sense you've just had a really bad day. And then he makes a really, really mean sandwich.
His ingredients are always fresh, the bread is great, and I've never been dissastisfied with anything I've gotten there. (Particularly the tuna salad. Heaven. Pure heaven!)
The deli itself is not designed to impress you, but the sandwiches will! the Deli is a true neighborhood gem. -

This place is a work in progress with it constantly getting better and better. The owner is an extremely friendly person who waves at 9/10ths of the people who walk by.....and will throw in free chips...or cut the price of water or whatever. He just wants you to eat his food and enjoy it. If he recommends heating a sandwich or whatever...take him up on it. I haven't found him wrong yet.
He doesn't do "breakfast" anymore and is sticking with lunch/dinner. Definitely take home one of his heat-and-eat meals one night if you need something quick. They are quite tasty and are a whopping $4.99 (you'll probably have leftovers). His spaghetti and meatballs are very good. -

Prime location: right off of Lake Shore Drive on Bryn Mawr and Winthrop. One stop before the Sheridan exit on L.S.D.
Restaurant: Very roomy, nice tables and chairs to sit down with friends at. Serve yourself soup section and carry-out counter. The vibe in the deli is very reminiscent to the one I felt when I worked at a family owned ice cream store in high school. It has a nice staff and a homey feel to it.
Food: Delicious. Sandwich, soup, and pop for $7.99. I had the Chicken Tortilla Soup and Reuben.
Chicken Tortilla Soup: Tasted like a marinated chicken soft taco was submerged in a bowl of zesty chicken broth. Had great spices and seasonings added to it. Great compliment to my sandwich.
Reuben: Marble rye was toasted and corned beef was really juicy. Came with sauerkraut and thousand island. The dressing and sauerkraut were a little too sweet for my liking; not as tangy as I usually prefer but all the flavors worked very well together.
Overall: This place gets 4.5 stars if I could give it that rating but unfortunately I am stuck giving it only 4 stars. -

I've been a patron of this deli since almost day 1. it is THE BEST !!
My favorite is the honey mustard chicken sandiwch. the buffalo chicken salad is also incredible. honestly everything is good!
The owner is what makes it though - very warm, sincere, and congenial. and always remembers what his customers like and enjoy. the world needs more places like this! but thankfully my neighborhood has the real deal already :) -

I give five stars. I'm really really trying really hard to think if something about this place that I don't like... let's see, the sandwiches are better than Zanzibar. looking at this place from just across the street you would think this place is a crummy hole in the wall, but inside? it's really nice with all the woodwork. they usually have good tunes on, and I've used their wifi from time to time. or you can take your sandwich across the street and chill at starbucks with a good latte for your sandwich. the food here is great.

I love the sandwches here. The buffalo chicken salad tastes just like a curry chicken I used to get in Scotland, and they offer a variety of side salads like heart of palm that are fan-freaking-licious.
The bread is so fresh and tasty; I had the marble rye, and it's really hard for me to even try anything else because it's so damn good. You can get an old-fashioned root beer, cream soda or ginger ale to wash it down with, too.
Everyone who works there, including the owner, is exceptionally friendly. It's not dirt cheap, but still reasonable considering the quality of all the ingredients.
One recommendation is to invest a bit more in the decor--it's a little empty inside, like the room is just waiting for someone to come in and throw down some awesome design skills. Also, one day during the summer the AC was out, and it was UNBEARABLE in there. Not good airflow, unfortunately.
Give it a shot next time you're looking for a sandwich in the neighborhood, it's worth it. -

This place is GREAT!!!
Breakfast and lunch... I've loved every sandwich I've had here. And the owner and staff are so nice. I never bring my lunch to work (across the street) and so I am constantly eating out... I'd eat here everyday, but I wouldn't want to get sick of it.... which would never happen. It would just be a "timeout."
This is the kind a place that makes me feel good about supporting a local neighborhood small business.
GO THERE!!!
Everything is fresh and delicious!!! -

I came here after learning about it on yelp n i have to agree this place is great.
They used fresh and high quality ingredients and the sandwiches are really tasty. I ordered a grilled vege sandwich and I'm a bit disappointed the vegetables like carrots and eggplant are still hard as rock even though there's grill marks all over it. I guess I'm used to the soft smoky grill vegetables... yet it's still great though.
If you choose your seating, don't sit by the doors when it's cold. They don't have 2 layers of doors that would cut the wind so you'll feel the chill everytime someone opens the door... -

One of my favorite new places! I can't believe I had walked past this place so many times and never gone in.
The owner is hilarious - it was like a sitcom the whole time I was there. A kind of crazy guy came in from around the corner and told Reza, the owner that he was looking for a job and that he wasn't crazy to which Reza replied, "I know you're not crazy - did you take your medication today?" He got him to go away by telling him that he was "in a meeting". Hah!
Some other colorful characters came in - Reza was polite to every one of them and generally made us all laugh.
Because it was my first time he gave me a free cookie and let me take whatever soda I wanted to go with my lunch.
The sandwiches are HUGE! I told him that in New York, a sandwich half that size would cost about $9 and he joked that he would charge me $10.
Great little deli! Lunch and a show, pretty much. He didn't get in your way though - I'm sure if I wanted to be left alone, he would let me.
Highly recommended. -

UPDATED: 12/1/06 Okay, I went here this morning, on an impulse 'cos it was a snow day. I ordered a cappuccino and ended up hanging out with the owner chatting for about a half hour. Very nice guy, and he gave me chicken soup that was tasty!
I probably need to go here again. I had a needlessly complicated and frustrating coffee ordering experience one morning when this place first opened that caused me to never to darken their doors again. I've gotten sandwiches that were good enough, but nothing exceptional. The hummus is plain and ordinary.Listed in: Edgewater Beach, Delis

Reza is truly a craftsman when it comes to making sandwiches.
Bryn Mawr Deli offers a pretty good variety of sandwiches, all of which are delicious. No, I haven't tried them all, but everyone that's come near my mouth, hell, everyone I've smelled, has been heavenly. The first time I walked into the Deli Reza goes "you look like you like spicy stuff". I was confused, but yes, I do like spicy food. He makes me a buffalo chicken panini, one that he claims to be the sole recipe holder of, and throws in free chips and soda. He let me taste a little fork-full of it and damn was it spicy. The panini had me turning red, as well as begging for me. It had this great combination of tangy-ness and hot-ness as well as the sweet taste of the tomatoes and the subtle taste of the herbs and oils on the bread.
Might be the single greatest sandwich in history.

I have no idea whats so great about this place. I just went there and had a honey mustard chicken sandwich and soup. The soup seemed like it came out of a can, it was ok but only when I added the crackers. The one thing that displeased me the most was when I saw the owner grabbing a bunch of chicken from a plastic bag, placed it on a dish and then microwaved it. I was like oh no, this can't be. I hate anything that's microwaved. But anyways, I still gave the sandwich a shot. And all i can say, it was not spectacular at all. Just a plain sandwich with plain old fashion ingredients. I also had a couple of cold pieces of chicken that wasn't heated all the way through. And then when I went to pay, he rang up the bill and charged me $11.90 for a sandwich +soup and can soda- And that was suppose to be the todays special .. ARE YOU FREAKIN CRAZY, thats way over priced for what hes serving. I don't know, it seems like hes cutting corners on the quality of food to make ends meet. Me and this one girl, were the only two people in the store during busy lunch hour. The girl across form me was not impressed either. She kept opening up here sandwich and picking things out..haha.
The only thing I liked about the place was that it was clean, and thats it... He definitely should do a better job in formulating better sandwiches. -

Before the mob attacks, let me get to the good:
The owner is super, super nice and gave me a free drink on my first visit. The buffalo chicken panini is AMAZING. The buffalo chicken salad actually has a really great kick to it and is really fantastic with their potato salad.
The 3 stars are for the other options, though. While I agree the turkey sandwich seemed to use fresh ingredients, it was just kinda meh. I mean, turkey, lettuce, tomato on average tasting white bread. I like my delis to have some expanded choices, like maybe baguettes or crusty rolls for bread and blue or brie cheeses. Is that so tough? Basically these are sandwiches your mom might make, but aren't anything too special.
Overall the owner is great and the food is tasty, but it's really not 5 star write-home-to-mama for me. Also, I don't know where these $5 sandwiches people talk about are, mine almost always come to $7, no matter what I get. There is also a $10 minimum to use debit/credit cards; I've known them to bend the rules, but there's still a sign so carry cash to be safe.
Wheelchair Accessibility Review- Completely accessible (Bryn Mawr El stop isn't, but once you're here, you're golden). I can't speak to any bathroom facilities because I haven't used them, but otherwise you'll have no issues getting in or out or maneuvering while inside. -

I'm new to the area and have been relying on Yelp to help me find good places to eat. In nearly every search, Bryn Mawr Deli is among the top 3 in the queue, so yesterday I decided to go after reading many reviews on here.
I'm obsessed with buffalo chicken sandwiches, so I was prepared to fall in love with the oft-mentioned and lauded buffalo chicken panini. Well, it would have been helpful to have known that the sandwich is actually a chicken SALAD sandwich with buffalo sauce mixed in. The outside of the panini -- the toasted bread and herbs -- was flavorful, warm, and crisp, but the inside was cold, mayonnaisey chicken salad with a touch of buffalo.
If you're looking for a piping hot piece of fried chicken dipped in spicy buffalo sauce on grilled bread, this is not your sandwich. If you like your buffalo chicken to make beads of sweat accumulate on your forehead, you probably won't even notice that this chicken salad has a lick of kick.
With that said, everything else in these reviews was spot-on. The owner is incredibly nice and, yes, gave me a bag of free chips. I'll give this place another try, but I'm just not with the herd on the buffalo chicken panini. -

Not Impressed! I've given the place 2 chances, tried the buffalo chicken salad and the curry chicken salad, both were just okay, kind of mushy and strange, I don't really get what people are raving about, and believe me I'm a big fan of all things buffalo. I was also disappointed to find that the first time I went, there wasn't any buffalo chicken left, and the second time I went I didn't see several of the choices that I saw the first time!
Also, the owner who people have been saying great things about hasn't been there either time so that was a let down.
On the plus side, I like the place, the stark decor and nice little collection of books available to browse through.
Maybe I'll give it one more chance, but overall the place was a disappointment, it doesn't even compare to a deli like piatto pronto which is just up the street from me in the other direction. -

This 5 star review is just for the sub. The deli in the name throws you off since it's a sandwich place. I was here with my daughter a couple days ago and the subs are 5 star. Great bread and meats, hot giardina. So fresh! Look out Bari's. These subs could challenge you for the top spot in the city. I forget the name of the sub I got but it was loaded with several different meats, it's one of their special subs. It was so good I took one home. My daughter had the corned beef...good but not great like the sub. Nice little tables to sit and chow down at. There a stack of newspapers to read if you desire. Oh yeah, if you eat in they bring your sub to your table on a plate, yeah a plate, not some plastic basket but a plate. Nice touch!

Love the tuna sub. I don't know why, but I wind up ordering it EVERY TIME we eat at the deli. If it didn't taste so good, I could easily stretch that overstuffed sub into two meals. The owner is extremely friendly, just what a neighborhood shop requires. He recognized and greeted me on the street weeks after my first visit. We're infrequent customers, but he somehow even remembers we have a young son and asks about him whenever I see him. This deli is simply a great asset to the neighborhood.

Well, let's see, after working in the area for exactly 2.3 weeks, i've done take-out from BMD a total of five times. Overall it's pretty darn good and he has some of the best homemade soups available this side of Foster Ave....the Minestrone and any of his chicken based soups are consistently fantastic, and they both pretty much keep in check my daily vegetable intake quota (if I were to be a foodie-pyramid sorta guy).

This is one of those places where I live 4 or 5 blocks away from and have passed a million times coming from Lake Shore Drive, yet I never stepped foot in it. Ever since it opened, I wondered about it and told myself that I would have to try it out sometime. And, almost 4 years later, I did...what a shame, I missed out on some really great food! What really got me motivated to try this deli out was the excellent yelp reviews it received. My boyfriend and I came in an hour before closing...it was just us and another couple, but they ordered to go while we stayed in. I ordered a turkey panini, my bf ordered the famous buffalo chicken panini, and we shared a bowl of chili. The chili was very good and hearty My turkey panini was great and my bf's buffalo chicken was just WOW. It was so tasty and spicy, even without the ranch or blue cheese! I don't know if I'd be able to finish a whole sandwich by myself because of it's spiciness, but it was perfect for my bf, being the Mexican he is. So, every once in a while, I had to steal a couple of bites from him. As was mentioned in these reviews, the owner is a genuinely nice guy...even gave us a free cookie for being first-timers!
The deli also has weekday specials and also options to get a half-sandwich with a cup of soup. I probably will be frequenting this spot now that I know how great it is. So, forget Panera! If you do go, be sure to try the owner's amazing creation....the buffalo chicken panini! -

Free wifi, an awesome owner and great sandwiches at a fair price...a great neighborhood corner sandwich place! Love the buffalo chicken panini. I can't think of any other place that has anything quite like it. Next time I'm going to try out of the microwavable boxed lunches to take to work. I enjoy spending my money at unique places like this where you know the owner over somewhere like Corner Bakery or Panera.

One of the best deli's I have ever experienced. My girlfriend and I visited the place yesterday and we ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and the BLT. Both were exceptionally great in taste and overall freshness. The prices were definitely reasonable as well. I know I'll be coming back to this place in the future.
