Wauwatosa, Milwaukee, WI
AWESOME! I loved this place! It was so much fun and different then the normal east side/downtown bars that I would usually frequent. The place is a little jarring, especially if your going for happy hour when its still light out, its almost completely dark in there and takes a little bit to adjust your eyes.
There small intimate tables skirting the area around the padded bar which are nice and cozy but I would definitely recommend sitting at the bar! There you get to see the bartender mix up there "secret recipe" drinks, unfortunately I did catch our bartenders name but he was awesome!
I guess Bryant's doesn't have a set drink menu but you give the bartender a few flavors that you like (exp: i liked vodka, honey, lemon, ginger) and they'll mix it all up for you into a wonderful drink! My mom described that she liked white liquor, not too sweet and a little spicy and got a martini rimmed with black pepper and a sweet lemony drink with a kick of Tabasco which tasted a lot better then it sounds ;D My boyfriend wanted an "adult" milk shake and wasn't disappointed in what he got. They do have some set drinks I guess but I only figured that out by pointing to one and asking "what's that???" it was called a "black magic" and it was delish! They wouldn't tell me exactly what was in it but did say it was a grape-y flavored vodka drink that tasted very much like a jolly rancher, I was hooked!
Even though these drinks sound very fruity and full of mixers they all have substantial amounts of alcohol in them, I was pretty intoxicated after my second drink and was ready sober up with a good meal! Our awesome bartender gave us a great recommendations of some new restaurants that had just opened close by and we were off. I will be coming back to this part of town often to frequent Bryant's and try and "stump" the bar keep :D -

Sorry to all you good reviewers. This is one CREEPY jin joint. I GET that it's so cool, different and old school. It's creepy place. The bartender was NOT happy to have another person come in. I think she said "Yes?". It sounded like "What do you want?
" And I do love lighting......usually. This place is Creepy Orange. The cash resister, the recessed lights, the wall sconces, the mini string lights wrapped around branches...all creepy orange. Like Halloween orange. Except the fish tank for entertainment. It glows green along with the stereo power meters also neon green.
EVERY other light in the place is orange. The drink was good but the bar keep said it was a secret mix. Fine. And she said little to nothing else. G-night all. Worth one visit for sure. But not again. -

When was the last time you were in a bar that has a radio with knobs?
Love the old skool vibe of this bar. Dropped in for one drink while in town for work and chatted it up with the bartender about places to go and things to see in Milwaukee. Loved the Moscow Mule he mixed up for me, too.
Reminds me of a swanky cocktail lounge in my hometown. This is the way drinks should be served.Listed in: My 100 Reviews for 2012

It's perplexing to think of anything that hasn't already been said about Bryant's. My parents frequented the place in the 70's. The ambiance and decor has not changed since then. Head to Bryant's and step back into that era of low light, high class, and swank to the nines.
From the cozy booths to the comfortable bar seating or a table upstairs, there isn't a bad seat in the house. The warm lights and cool jazz lull me into a dream-like state and I forget about the world outside.
If you love cocktails and mystery, you're in for a treat. The staff take great care in crafting drinks you'll oooh and aaah about, then beg for more. I'll try anything they care to make for me, with any liquor. If it's not to my liking, which rarely happens, they'll try again. Even if you prefer straight forward drinks like Gin and Tonic or 7 and 7, they put in the same care and panache as they do when creating a complex cocktail.
My favorite cocktail with a name is the Mona Lisa. I've also had the Zombie, Mai Tai, Frank's Drink, E.T., Scotch Dragon, Sophia Loren, Navy Grog, Scarlett O'Hara, Sazerac, Rat Pack, Love and Happiness, Dr. Funk, and many, many unnamed creations.
They can even pour a dram or two of whisky for you or create a drink when only given a conjured up name. I brought a friend for their first visit and to showcase how creative and accommodating the staff is, requested a drink called Monkey Brains. Knowing that the great Michael Morton would have fun with it, we received a cocktail in a monkey head mug topped off with what appeared to be brains crafted out of crushed ice.
Emily Evans creates some staggeringly tasty Scotch cocktails as well as an award-winning Milwaukee Manhattan.
Jordan surprised me with a Laphroaig concoction that complimented the whisky without drowning the signature peaty quality.
Keep in mind this isn't a beer and shot place. It takes time to create perfectly balanced cocktails that may have eight ingredients.
Sure, it gets busy. If it is, you will wait, patiently, because it IS worth the wait. You're usually served a water right away, if you aren't, ask for one. Hydrate and reflect on what brought you to Bryant's. Enjoy your company. When your drink arrives, keep in mind the care and thought that went into creating it specifically for you.
Whether you're out for a night on the town or looking for a quiet place to enjoy a few drinks after work, Bryant's will take care of you. -

Hello, Gorgeous! Wait, just let my eyes adjust. There we go.
It's been a minute since I have been out on the town. So, I was super stoked to try out Bryant's. Luckily, the rumors of very low lighting, velvet wallpaper and inventive cocktails, all came true. In the words of my friend, "this place is cookoo crazy!" But, in a good way.
We walked in and headed upstairs to the last available table. Score. We took some time to soak up the atmosphere and I was instantly reminded of a photo I have of my husband's family. It is circa 1940 and they are all lined up at the bar, drink in hand. If I closed my eyes, I could pretend we were there with them. A fun thought, but I had to quickly snap back to reality so I could prepare my drink order.
I typically stick to beer because, frankly, cocktails scare me. I get nervous that they will be too strong or too sweet or too expensive. Fortunately, Bryant's solved all that because you don't order from a set menu. You simply tell the waitress the flavors and alcohols you like and they whip up something tasty. In my case, I explained my love of grapefruit, champagne and sometimes vodka and out came a tall glass of yum. I wasn't able to get anyone to reveal the secret recipe, but they hit the nail on the head. Mmm Mmm Good!
The cocktails were reasonably priced and I now know that this is absolutely the only way I will order a cocktail from now on. Keep up the good work, Bryant's.Listed in: Milwaukee

This place is AWESOME.
Tell the 'tender the kinds of alcohol you like and what flavor you're looking for, and he/she will whip you up something delicious.
They make the best Brandy Old Fashioneds in Milwaukee and the rest of their "depression-era cocktails" (half-price during happy hour!) are just as amazing. Try a Moscow Mule with gin instead of vodka, or a "cucumber collins" on a hot day. Ice cream drinks your thing? They do those, too. The decor is retro all the way and the bartenders and waitstaff are incredibly friendly. -

It is nice to have an escape from the traditional bar scene. Bryant's sticks to their tradition and retro atmosphere while serving up fantastic drinks too.
They do not have a menu - just let the "mixologist" know what sort of flavors or spirits you enjoy and they will craft a drink just right for you. One of my favorite drinks was made by Evan - a Cucumber Collins. Very tasty and refreshing. Another friendly member of the staff also made a special drink in honor of my beloved pet that had passed away.
Don't be alarmed - no beer on tap and I doubt they carry UV Cake Vodka. Keep it classy at Bryant's Milwaukee. -

Bryant's is Milwaukee's best corner bar to capture some nostalgia. They have also gone beyond the call of bar keeping and concocted libations that wars were fought over. However, they do things the Bryant's way, which might not jive with you. They do not muddle their Old-Fashions, they over-dairy their White Russians (despite requests not too), but they can also read your mind and find something that is down your alley.
You can't recreate what Bryant's delivers. -
Review from Ilana W.

The taste: They will make whatever cocktail you want. "I like something that'll get me good and drunk, that's not too sweet" done. "I want something not too sweet, not too many calories, and a virgin version of it" - they come out with a Cucumber Collins. And while the sizes of the drinks vary (or rather the size of the cups range from reasonable to Seriously?! Is this the size for ONE person?), they're good and'll get the job done.
The place: I always feel like it's Halloween when I'm here. There are orange holiday lights draped around the inside; I haven't decided if they contribute positive or negatively to the otherwise old-timey feel of the place. Taking flash pictures in here will surely shock everyone around you, but it's been done (and I have the proof).
Have been there with large parties, and not everyone can fit at one set of tables. Probably the ideal group size would be between 6-10. We've come with 15 before, and there was definite spill over.
My face: What I remember of it, it's a good one. Tipsy, smiley, not broke. All good things to come from a cocktail lounge! -

I always get a kick out of bringing my out of town friends to Bryant's. It's in the midst of a residential area, so when we pull up, those not in the know are looking around like..."Is Bryant a person we're going to visit?"
But once you get inside, the atmosphere takes your breath away. A definite "Ta da!" moment. There is a dimly lit, romantic, swanky Mad-Men feel to the place, and as you look around and see the marvelous concoctions being sipped by the other patrons, you get a little-kid-before-Christmas sense of anticipation.
You slide into the cushy barseats or cozy booths and order whatever your little heart desires. I've said everything from "I want a root beer float that gets me wasted." to "I hate gin. Make me love it." On the occasion that I challenged the bartender to make me love gin, we agreed that if I hated whatever he put in front of me, he would buy it. The drink that he came up with was an amazing blend of cucumber, honey, lemon, gin, and...I believe...soda water. It tasted like summertime. Not only did I wind up paying for that drink - but I wound up ordering another.
I have brought everyone from colleagues to family to close friends to Bryants, and usually have a great time. On one occasion, I brought my father - who admits to being a beer drinker simply because he never knows what to order when the bartender comes around. I told him we HAD to go to Bryant's...and they would help him find "his drink." After a friendly conversation with the bartender about his likes and dislikes, my dad ordered a bourbon manhattan on the rocks - and loved it. It was the perfect recommendation for him.
I took off one star for my last visit, when I think I got a new bartender. He was friendly enough, but I ordered an old favorite - the Golden Cadillac - and it came out wrrrrronnnggg. It was awful. My friends' drinks weren't quite up to par either. I can definitely forgive someone for being new, but part of the fun of Bryant's is the absolute mastery of the bartenders handcrafting your drink. And 90% of the time - that's what you get.Listed in: 100 Reviews in 2012!

Do not go here if you ever want to be able to order a cocktail from another bar again and enjoy it. In other words, once you go Bryant's you can never go back. I'll go to other bars to enjoy a beer, but if I'm in the mood for a cocktail, this is now the only viable choice in southeastern Wisconsin. Being spoiled isn't so horrible though.
Bryant's has the best bartenders in the city as far as I'm concerned. Calling them "bartenders" may actually be derogatory. A more fitting title would be "mixologist". I enjoy twists on the classics, and my favorites, and they know numerous twists for sure. My favorite is a twist on the Manhattan, called Frank's Drink. Delicious.
Their happy hour runs late, from 6-9pm, which is perfect for those of us with later schedules. They have half priced old-fashioneds, as well as depression era cocktails during happy hour. The old-fashioneds are great and huge, but I don't really care for any of the depression era cocktails I've had (only about 5 of 45?) because of how sweet they are, which stems from the need to cover up the boozy taste of moonshine back in the day.
Since coming here for the first time I've really gotten into classic cocktails and mixology myself, and have a new respect for a well balanced drink. If you can appreciate the finer things in life, definitely make a stop here, even if it is out of the way, you will not regret it. -
Review from Matt R.
I went here for the first time on Christmas Eve, after a fabulous dinner at one of my favorite dining places. My date and I were looking for a place with killer drinks, and I had NEVER been here. Caveat for the remainder of this review: I am a musical fan of Sinatra.
This place has no beer, wine or drink list. They have a slim selection of wines, and an acceptable selection of beers. But that's not why you come here. You come here because you can say things like "I like dark rum, bitters and a little taste of sweet" three different times and get three fairly different drinks, all with a recipe and a name.
I had the fortune my first time of being tended by Mr. Michael Morton, a skilled individual (as are the rest of the team). This is a classy joint, not for the bar crowd or for the faint of wallet. The place looks straight out of the 50s (or an old Wisconsin dining hall) and the service is as good as you would expect it to be.
Definitely go here, but make sure to assign a driver (or hire one of your friends if you want to promote the local economy). These drinks might be fruity, fancy or even schmancy, but they ain't for those that can't hold their liquor. -

Seriously!
There are so many places in Milwaukee that looks so freakish scary from the outside, and then ka0bam! is so nice inside!
Went after dinner for our anniversary and had a really nice time. Too many Christmas jingles but as long as we remember to go back after December, I think we'll be OK.
I've got nothing better to add than all the other reviewers...
Just try it!
Oh, and all drinks are 7$, and the depression era drinks were $3.50. I guess the happy hours change periodically. (At least, that's what we paid for our drinks) -

This bar is really off the beaten path and one of the more unique bars in Milwaukee. I am a huge fan of theme bars/parties/costumes and Bryant's feels like it has a cohesive vintage feel right when you walk in. It is a little hard to put your finger on it (classic dive bar? 20's? 50's?) but it is awesome either way. I wanted to come back and wear a costume...you know, just for fun. It definitely has a Milwaukee feel to it (wood paneling, dim lighting, cheap Christmas lights as decor), kind of an up-scale dive, in a good way.
My only complaint was that it took a little while to get served and to get our drinks. And speaking of the drinks. I just feel like the bartenders there have to be geniuses. They invent a lot of their own things there. Our waitress told us to order by what we felt we were in the mood for- purple and rum, on fire and red, ice cream drink and mint, etc. I went with a brandy old-fashioned first and then a signature brain buster (for which I received an "I got brain busted at Bryant's sticker"- BONUS!). The drink was super boozey which is exactly what I was looking for. Tasty too of course.
After going here the first time, I have told a lot of people about it and it is on it's way to becoming a favorite of mine. There are not too many really unique concept bars around and this is one of them! -

This place is as good as it gets. If I could change my facebook status to in a relationship with Bryant's I would. The staff, incredible. Amazing artists. Artists, you say?? Yep. The whole bar experience here is a personal consultation that results in your very own delicious hand crafted bevy. These boys And girls know what is up. Trust them, they're experts.
Bryant's is atmosphere heaven. Small tables, booths, the room radiates a lovely orange glow. It's just dark enough so everyone looks amazing. Vintage cash register, fish tank and don't forget to check in on foursquare if it's your first time. Secret squirrel presents await. -

The best bar in Milwaukee. Period. End of story. Check please.
This place is my go to when I have some friends from out of town that are skeptical about the wonders of Milwaukee. From the outside it looks like grandma lives there. Then you get inside and you realize grandma was never this cool. Great cookies? Yes. This cool? No.
The ambiance sets itself apart from the typical through the use of dim (almost pitch black) lighting, rat pack music, and throwback furniture. They even have a room with velvet lining the walls upstairs. Even though it is not socially acceptable to drape yourself in velvet for all of you George Costanza fans out there, it is perfectly acceptable to drink with it surrounding you.
I've tried at least a dozen drinks and have never been disappointed by one of them. The bartenders are awesome and incredibly knowledgeable. I am a bartender. To compare the vast difference between them and myself, think of the difference between Ryan Braun and an 8 year old far sighted teeball player.
On the weekends there will be a bit of a wait and the drinks can take a while due to the time it takes to prepare them. However, it is totally worth it. -

Best bar in Milwaukee, hands down, no contest. Drinks are to die for, served straight up, on the rocks, blended, or en flambe by dapper men in suits and ladies in seamed stockings. The decor is kind of retro airport lounge in the best possible way. If it weren't in such a strange spot, I would be an all the time regular.

We've been to Bryants multiple times now and it gets better every time if that's possible. I personally like to hit them up early (before 9) so we can sit at the bar. I'm amazed at the effort that goes into each and every drink.
Bartenders have been great - witty and full of great suggestions for what we might like next. My current favorite - "The Herb" made with gin, fresh cucumber, fresh mint, fresh basil and seltzer. A perfect summer drink!Listed in: Time Capsules

I was in love the moment I walked in the door.
Bryant's, please don't ever change. Don't ever change a damn thing. Don't ever update your sound system, don't ever change the dim orange lighting, don't ever print out a drink menu, and don't ever stop playing that sweet, soulful music.
This place was almost surreal. When I walked in I thought I might have died and gone to heaven. It just has this vibe to it that's tough to explain... so old-school. Sitting down at the bar, my cares were forgotten and the outside world disappeared. The old-school sound system sounds warm and comforting and the mix of music playing set the perfect mood for getting buzzed, an awesome mix of quality motown and jazz. This is my type of place.
Service was among the best I've received anywhere. Top notch. The bartender John was a swell fellow and a talented drink maker. I heard they had no drink menu here so I just asked him to make me something that involved gin and bitters, I ended up with a tasty hand-crafted cocktail that was just the way I like them... strong! I can't wait to come back and see how they do a dry gin martini, that will be my next one for sure.
There were only two other people in here when I went in, but they were so nice and so cool, I imagine you could strike up a friendly conversation with any stranger here. Wisconsin people in general are just so nice (in my experience, for the most part... I am from Chicago where people are much more stand-offish). I have to admit I felt a little under-dressed in my heavy metal t-shirt but I still didn't feel out of place. I imagine you could come in here in a suit & tie or in a Slayer t-shirt and get by just fine, but the place has such class, I might opt for something more non-descript if I have the chance next time.
The good thing about this place's style and being in the neighborhood it's in is this: It seems to filter out the type of people I wouldn't want to hang out with at bars, and by that I mean Water Street jocks, Marquette trixies, college chads, hipster dorks, trendy douchebags, tools with mousse in their hair wearing Affliction t-shirts, and did I mention pretentious hipsters. If you fall into these categories then stay away. Don't fuck this place up for me, I will cut you.
Time seemed to stand still in here. When I go to a bar, I want to escape the real world and this place does that for me in a way only a few other establishments can. The whole time I was here, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face if I tried. No TV's, no loud shit... Stress level ZERO. Perfect atmosphere to unwind and forget the world.
I hope this place never, ever goes away and I hope it always stays just like it is. I'm really happy I live in Milwaukee now and I can't wait to come back here via taxi and just get totally rocked. This will be a regular spot for me. I plan on coming here at least a hundred more times, this place might be my favorite drinking hole in Milwaukee... a close tie with Foundation, Paddy's, and Palm Tavern. -

So, my new years resoltions have been for the past few years to be more decisive. This is one place I let it slide. I mean I tell you things I like that sometimes are not even related to achohol and I get a drink that I love in return. The staff is usuallly pretty busy so dont be put off if it takes a moment to perfect the drink you ordered.
There is no menu here, which relates back to what I said above about being indecisive and that being awesome. I had a drink that had pineapple and basil in it last time, created by the Great Michael Morton, and I swear it tasted exactly like the sorbet I had told him about when he was asking me what I wanted. It just has such an easy feel to it. You can stop by for one or stay the whole night, Id recommend (and do) this place to anyone.. Milwaukee Natives, visitiors, whoever!

This is truly a hidden gem.
I had heard about this place and made sure to plan our Milwaukee trip accordingly so we can come here. I love that its hidden in a neighborhood further south of downtown Milwaukee.
We walked in knowing there is no drink menu, yes thats right. NO drink menu. The bartender asked us what do we like so I went with amaretto. The bf wanted something with whiskey and sweetness to it. What was brought back to us was this: an old school amaretto for me, and for the bf a blanche dubois (french drink with whiskey). The drinks were very strong, had unique flavors and were made with precision and craft not all bartenders are willing to use. I was completely floored and did not want to leave!
I must come back whenever i'm back in Milwaukee, what an amazing place. Miss you guys already! -

Bryant's is the type of place where your grandparents would've gone to get engaged. It has a dimly lit, basement of a bowling alley feel, that's both intimate and eerie. It's old-school charm doesn't live up to its potential, however, as Bryant's seems to feel incredibly one dimensional.
The bar staff are truly professionals, as they make drinks from absolute scratch with ease. They know exactly what flavors and components work together, and seem completely comfortable in their environment.
Even with that, it was not overly welcoming. We were greeted coldly and served coldly. Very professionally, but cold. -
Review from Brian M.
Ah Bryant's, you had me at hello..
What more possibly needs to be said about Bryant's that hasn't already been said!!?? Exactly. If you've been here, you know what I mean. Also, then you know what my parents super swanky basement rec-room looks like: Vintage HiFi, lots of black Naugahyde, about 8 total watts of candle power, super awesome, super specific-use glassware, etc, etc. Its only missing the high-pile orange shag carpet. Although, maybe it has. There's just not enough lighting to be sure.
Here's a list of only 5 of about 73 reasons why Bryant's is so cool:
1. True Artists behind the counter: Constant performers, always professional, friendly, predictably witty, and very intelligent. I am always awed. Go ahead, play stump the bartender. Just ask, they can make it.
2. Amazing selection. I challenge anyone to ask for a specific type of booze, brand, or mixer. I guarantee it will always be served in the appropriate mug, glass, goblet, cordial, or stemware. Ask for a Russian Mule: enjoy the copper mug.
3. Vintage HiFi. So appropriate for the selection of music they play.
4. Lack of menu. This forces you to either be creative, or allow the mixologist to be creative. I guarantee they know what you want more than you do.
5. I used to think this was just a hipster bar. Wrong! Bryant's appeals to everyone. What an incredibly diverse clientele. We've met people here from all over the country. The Safe House used to be the place to take out of town guests. Take them here now!
By far, this is the coolest new place on my radar this year. Any other places like this out there? Many reviews call this a "hidden gem." Sorry, I think the word has been out for a while now. We like to go early, before 9:00 and sit at the bar and watch the bartenders.
One final word of advice: Its not cheap. Drinks are typically $ 9- $11. Well worth the money.Listed in: South Side Spectacular!!

I wish I could come to Bryant's every night. Or at least a few nights a week. This might be my favorite bar of all time. The drinks are seriously delicious - I love the "no drink menu, just tell us your flavors" thing - cause they know what they're doing.
I also just love the vibe. All different kinds of people jamming to Sinatra in the city's oldest bar.
Also, Bryant's has the nicest staff and PATRONS ever. F and I got stranded here when no taxis would come pick us up as we fruitlessly called the dispatchers for hours - the bartenders and waitress were hustling to try to help us out, making phone calls, etc., etc., and finally hooked us up with a ride from Rose, the nicest girl in the world, who was sitting on the other end of the bar. Milwaukee, you're a doll. -

The first thing to pique my Bryants-Cocktail-Lounge interest: the happy hour half-priced old fashions and depression era cocktails. Oh, so the coolest premise for happy hour ever? Doooone.
I spent about 4 hours in Bryant's, tucked away in a black, cushy alcove with two friends and a table of perfectly mixed drinks. Dimly lit doesn't begin to describe it -- there are some strings of holiday lights draped and hung in various places, and... that's it. Once your pupils dilate, the barely-brighter-than-candlelight ambiance is quite nice. Service was prompt and friendly. Our waitress was full of suggestions that fit with the happy hour.
Oh, and all those other reviewers mentioning the Silk Stocking? Yea, there's a reason for that. So delicious.
Advice: try getting here a little early, around 6 or 7. We pulled up about quarter after 6, and were one of three tables being occupied. Leaving at 10, the place was packed and there was a substantial clump of people standing around waiting for seats. -

This place is amazing!
Don't think so? Just wait - your eyes will adjust.
I enjoyed my first visit to Bryant's when out for a small birthday celebration. There were 8 of us stopping to get a drink before dinner. As many have said, there is not a menu. If you don't know exactly what you want - don't worry. We had some people in our group show off because they've been researching drinks like the "Harvey Wallbanger" or the "Godfather" - so that is what they asked for. I simply told our wonderful bartender that I would like an icecream drink and I added that I would not like anything that tasted too strong and that I hate vodka. He went on to ask if I liked chocolate and I said yes!
What came to me was an amazing chocolate shake with all sorts of wonderful flavors including a hint of brandy. It was lovely and yummy.
Our drinks all cost between $9 and $11.
Also, the music was lovely, smooth, perfect.
Not only would I recommend this place, but I will be back! -

I purchased two groupons to Bryant's Cocktail Lounge and it was AMAZING! I had researched them a bit beforehand on which drinks to get. I got the Persian Ice, the Greek Goddess and another drink. Honestly, I don't know how I was able to remember these as the drinks were strong but inexpensive.
The atmosphere is small and dark but it adds to the mystique and I adore the outfits and the fact that they cater to what the customer's taste is. Because it's so laid back and focused on people, I would say that you should go with a group no bigger than four. This isn't like any other bar with shots and loud music. If you want to chill out, slowly drink and enjoy the company then come here. -

Walking into Bryant's Cocktail Lounge is a shocking experience. It takes a minute to adjust.
It's shocking because it's not hard to feel as though you've been transported to another time by its fantastic authenticity and careful preservation. Bryant's is what it has always been.
Here's why:
An old school, authentic, hi-fi sound system is present and in use.
A beautiful, dimly-lit orange halo of light seems to surround everything.
Soft walls, soft floor, soft space;
& a dim, dark, so so deliciously old-school vibe.
(Think Mad Men, but cooler.)
(Quick historical context: Bryant's has been a Milwaukee institution forever and ever and ever. A few years ago, the place closed, only to be bought up by all-around excellent guy John Dye. And he didn't change a thing; he only improved on the original concept by updating what needed updating, and keeping the place relevant to the community. Everything else stayed exactly the same. For this, Milwaukee is clearly thankful. Read the reviews!)
And there is no drink list. Nope. You don't get to read and scrutinize and pick based upon a list. Lists are limitations here. It starts with a conversation between patron and staff. Last time I went to Bryant's, I knew I wanted a champagne based cocktail. When I was crafted something with cucumber, gin, myriad somethings from tiny eye droppers, sugar, and champagne, I was impressed. Then...I tried. And was elated. And impressed.
Brandy Alexanders and perfect Manhattans and Negronis are standard, well-known drinks. A Bryant's bartender will make you any of these without batting an eye. But to have over 400 other cocktails available in your go-to repertoire and they don't bat an eye at that, either? Again, impressed. So, the girl to your right might have Bryant's signature drink, "the Black Magic." (You'll know because it's on fire.) Someone to your left might have a deliciously decadent ice-cream concoction. Across the bar, a couple might be sipping some serious-looking whiskey cocktails, marveling at those cocktails' complexities.
There is no possible way to overstate the niche Bryant's fills for our community. It's such an excellent addition to Milwaukee, and has been forever. I know many of us die-hard Milwaukeeans feel quite lucky that Bryant's was resurrected by John a few years ago, as when it closed it was assumed closed for good. A whole new wave of Milwaukee residents (myself included) are getting the chance to experience Bryant's unique and excellent take on the authentic cocktail lounge as a result of this resurrection, and for this, Milwaukee is lucky. -

Bryant's where have you been all my life?! No really. Where?!
I used to be in your neighborhood all the time but never heard of you. You must have been there for a long time, because your interior is very retro 60's supper club. I'm sad that I missed out on you while I was a Milwaukee resident, but I'm happy that I got a chance to experience you with some of my Chicago friends. And PS, thanks for making me look like a super awesome champ in their eyes because they all loved it.
I'm ok with you not having any menus because when I'm going retro with my cocktails, there's only one thing I want and that is a sidecar. You made it perfectly. You also made my friends' drinks, the Bali Hai and the Silk Stocking (oh la la!), extremely well. I'm going to have to research some other drink options for my next trip and see what you come up with.
Bryant's, I love you.Listed in: America's Dairyland

What a fantastic bar! Went here with some friends for a birthday party after reading some good reviews about it and was happy to find it lived up to the hype. We had a nice waiter who was attentive without being obnoxious - plus he made great drinks and was happy to provide recommendations.
As noted by others here, the decor is awesome. You feel transported when you walk through the door and you will probably be happy the entire time you are there.
I think it is important to note that you do NOT need to be a hipster to enjoy this place. I have felt embarrassingly intimidated going into other "cool" types of bars because I don't wear skinny jeans with chuck taylors (not that there is anything wrong with that!). I went with a decidedly mixed group of friends and we all enjoyed it. There wasn't that feeling that you had to act cool in order to have fun there or you would be hipstered out the door. Instead, this is a come one come all kind of crowd. So great. Can't wait to head back there again soon. :) -

Bryant's exceeded my expectations. My boyfriend and I visited this weekend at opening (5:00 p.m.) on a Saturday. We were the only patrons, so it was quiet. Yes, it's dark and takes a minute for your eyes to adjust. Truly a unique atmosphere, and I agree with others that it's a cool date spot. I'd love for a guy to take me here instead of any old place that serves beer on tap. Our bartender was friendly and attentive.
We each had 2 drinks, first I had a "Pink Squirrel," the ice cream drink invented at Bryant's. It's a must-have for anyone who likes ice cream drinks. He had a Tornado (I think that's the name) a rum-based drink in a hurricane glass, it reminded me of a fruity/sour drink you'd have in a lounge chair on vacation.
Then I had a refreshing "Jack Frost," very light with a slight lime flavor. He had the "voodoo," very tart. These are what they call their "Depression Era" drinks.
Our total for all 4 drinks (excluding tip) was $32. I expected a much higher tab (but we're from Chicago).
If you travel to Milwaukee, Bryant's is a MUST. The Water Street bars are lively, but this is a unique spot that you won't forget and will actually tell people about. -

OK. Take a moment. Go look at the pictures of the building this place is housed in. Would you ever guess, in 5 hundred million years, that something so cool, fabulous, retro 1960's, dark and sexy would reside inside? Exactly.
So when we rolled up to this joint on a Friday night, smack dab in the middle of a residential area, my first thought was "oh crap I am too overdressed for this place" and my second was "this place is going to smell like baloney, I just know it".
But SEE, that was MY fatal error, because when a Milwaukee native tells you a place is good, you best be listening with both ears!
It was dark, it was cozy as hell, and the jazz playing in the background made you want to fling your mink stole off into a corner and have cute guys in horn rimmed glasses coyly pull off your opera gloves in one of the curved booths. Yes, this is the kind of place your parents (or, OK, at least a hip aunt) told you about.
Plus, there are no less than 450 cocktails available to order, and no menu! Yep, you heard that right - I know, how is it even possible? Well, the answer is simple and steeped in history. Bryant's founder felt that a cocktail menu limited the choice of the customer by directing them to a few popular choices. In fact, many of the best cocktails would sound a little funny on paper. A cherry bourbon drink with lemon? A green concoction with whiskey, gin, and apricot brandy? Most people would pass right by these drinks without a thought, which would be a shame given these are some of the best drinks in the inventory. I think they nailed it when they say it would be a shame to have a menu get in the way of a truly special cocktail experience.
And seriously, Andy ordered a bourbon drink which was, and probably forever will be, the only one I tried and liked (the Silk Stocking). I had the Bali-Hai, which was a giant, pineapple concoction that was delicious.
So basically you are going to want to come back again and again. If not to live it up, 1960's style, then at least to get going on that drink list - I have 449 to go!Listed in: Road Trip-Wisconsin!

There are bars, there are cocktail bars and then there is Bryant's Cocktail Lounge. I have traveled the U.S. and abroad and have yet to find a place that comes close to the classiness, knowledge, creativity, sincerity and downright deliciousness as Bryant's. Whether you're going on a romantic date, with a group of friends or by yourself, it's the perfect setting to revel in one of their 300 specialty cocktails.
There's an incredible amount of history to this cornerstone of Milwaukee and owner John Dye has done quite a bit to maintain its authenticity - from decor to the famous holiday punch and the incredible sound system that plays classics from Cooke, Otis and Etta- all proof that good things need not change. And if you're lucky, you can get a ghost story or two from someone behind the bar.
Though there isn't a menu for customers, the usual classic cocktails are always served and friendly staff can also suggest drinks based on your taste and preference. Bryant's is truly an experience, one that Milwaukee is lucky to offer. -

Thank God for Yelp and thank God for Bryant's Cocktail Lounge! A friend and I headed to Milwaukee for a show and decided to make a night of it ... thanks to some great Yelp reviews, we decided to try Bryant's ...
The place is dark (gentlemen, this is a great date spot), the bartenders are dolls (what's your spirit? what's your preference, sweet, sour, bitter? and they totally kept a straight face when the dude next to my friend and ordered a "mocktail" ... for real.) and the crowd is a delightful mix. We met an older couple in for drinks and a young couple on what appeared to be a first date.
If you're a gin drinker, I highly suggest the Aviator. Hello, delicious. -

Bryant's is honestly the greatest bar in history. The bartenders here don't just open bottles of beer and pour shots. They are masters at crafting wonderful drinks (both alcoholic and non).
You can go in and tell them "I want something raspberry-y with maybe hints of coconut and amaretto" and they'll instantly know exactly what to make for you, usually with further questions like "Frozen?" "Blended?" "On the rocks?" "On fire?" (Yes, they actually serve drinks that are on fire.) -

Unique place. Bar staff are very knowledgeable on drinks and mixes and what will go good with what. I tried a couple of different things and they give good recommendations. I like that they can pull a drink out of nowhere based on one ingredient. Small corner bar but pretty cool. Ambiance is different, very dark and 70's porn lounge or parents basement bar looking. Great experience, friendly people, glad I tried it.

This is without a doubt the best cocktail lounge in the city. If you're after beer of any sort, go elsewhere. If you're after real, intelligent and creative drinks, go here. While you can get the foo-foo fruity faux-martini drinks common at most restaurants and bars, ask the bartender for something unique to Bryant's and don't be afraid of actually tasting the alcohol.
Don't ask for a menu (and don't be rude when the bartender tells you no such thing exists, save the Rolodex next to the register to refresh a weary barkeep's memory). Instead, consider your mood, favorite flavor(s), and the general ambiance. Sunday evenings are the perfect time to enjoy a Cafe Arlene or a Navy Grog (their version made with a nutmeg liqueur).
Weeknights and Sunday nights are the best time to go here. Try to sit and the bar and get to know the bartenders. They will guide you through the almost limitless possibilities.
And for God's sake, don't bring your loud, rowdy frat buddies here. It pisses off the regulars. -
Review from Denise D.
Like At Random, Bryant's hasn't had an upgrade, probably ever. There is even a cigarette machine! I hate cigarettes, but how often do you see a cigarette machine? Cool, hey? It has a great feel and is a hallmark Milwaukee bar. The decor and music maintain an old Polish neighborhood feel (even if the neighborhood has since switched to Latino around it), and the bartenders wear tuxedo shirts. There is a dress code for patrons: there are rules about hats and bare arms. (Read the fine print at the door).
On Friday and Saturday nights, it can get quite crowded & smokey-- try upstairs before you bolt. You won't get a menu with large print like at At Random, however-- you either tell the server or bartender what you're thinking of ("a blueberry flavored girl-drink," for example) or have a specific drink in mind already. I always get Vodka Collins when I go, my friend Jenn gets Old Fashioneds-- how Milwaukee is that?
Keep in mind that the cocktailers do not tip out the bartenders (I went out on two dates with a bartender and he told me), so split your tip between your cocktailer and the bartenders. If you've ever worked behind a bar, you know what a pain in the ass ice cream drinks are, and they make more than their fair share.
