Lots of notions. Like great buttons for your coat. Cosmetics, coin purses. Odds and ends you will not find anywhere else. Great travel stuff, money belts, luggage locks. Real cotton underwear, sweatshirts. Basics from the last major recession in 1930's.
Eclectic and eccentric.Think old fashion Woolworths.Reading glasses all things you will need over 40 years old... -

Weak customer service.
Overpriced products.
Terrible selection.
Why would anyone return here when there are better alternatives?
Local doesn't excuse the pricing, the horrible store layout, and the bad service; those are the worst reasons to shop locally. -

Oh, Bruce Variety Store, how did it take me so long to find you?
I originally went here in search of inspiration for a Halloween costume. What I found was so much more...make-up, buttons, party favors, aprons, wacky sunglasses, even women's underwear! While I couldn't be convinced to buy the sexy mouse costume, I will certainly be heading here before my next party. -

1 part hardware store + 1 part party store + 1 part Michaels = Bruce Variety.
A veritable Box of Chocolates.
Helium balloons to boot!
Prices similar to Giant. Not everyone has a car or access to suburban shops like Michaels and Dollar Stores, so this will be our new office go-to store for events.
Mixed bag on service, but the owner was quite helpful!
NOTE::
Tight corners for wheelchairs and strollers.
AmEx not accepted. -

I love Bruce's. There's nothing you can't find here.
You can get school supplies, housewares, fabrics, stickers, games, car accessories, bathroom necessities, glues galore... Really anything. Be sure to take your time and look over each inch you can!
Disclaimer: I've been coming here for years. Most of my Halloween costumes were made from fabrics from Bruce Variety. Love. It. -
Review from Merida F.
I visited Bruces again when I was having a toga party and I was looking for some fabric. It is hard to find stores that sell bolts of fabric anymore and it is really nice that they do, along with the ribbons and tassles that go along with it.
They were very nice and I ended up coming out with a lot more than I went in looking for. Definitely will be back for my next party :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Looking for something utterly random, like beeswax or odd sized paper table cloths, a child sized batman outfit or a particularly small needle threader? Bruce's has likely got it, as well as 397 other out of the way things you could put to good use. My go to place for the bizarre problem solvers life periodically requires.

Wondering if Bruce's has recently changed hands, or if I've just become more aware of their (lack of) customer service. I used to enjoy wandering into BV after a trip to Strosnider's next door - more out of a desire to be surprised by what they carry, rather than any burning need for their goods.
However, yesterday I went into the store looking for a plain kids' T-shirt and markers. The woman at the cash register barely looked at me when I asked about the shirt. A staffer at the back told me that my toddler could not touch the styrofoam balls that were at foot level, without so much as a "sorry" or "I hope you don't mind..." (for the record, he had just picked one up to look at it, and was not throwing them or smashing them). I put down all the items I had collected to purchase and walked out of the store.
While I don't expect the world to revolve around my children, as long as they are well-behaved I expect that they (and I) to be respected as equals to any other customer. I don't understand stores that purport to serve families, then act as if children are nuisances the moment they enter. I will be going to CVS, Target, G Sreet Fabrics, a toy store, or costume store for my sundry needs.... anywhere instead of BV. -

Went here on the recommendation of a friend who thought for sure me and my crafty self would achieve Nirvana. So disappointed!
There was very little by way of novelty, and most of the stuff in this store can be found at good dollar store for MUCH CHEAPER. The crafts can be found at most Michaels and A.C. Moore for MUCH CHEAPER. The housewares can be found at Homegoods for MUCH CHEAPER (nicer, too). I finally threw my hands up after picking up a non-stick Bundt pan priced at $30. Are you kidding me? I recently bought a larger, much nicer brand pan at Homegoods for $12. Basically, I found their prices for everything absolutely outrageous.
I can understand how some local folks wax nostalgic because they went here as kids, but the rest of us can surely do better. -

Nothing reminds me of high school more than buying hair ribbons at Bruce's... a real variety store with the most random assortment of things under the sun. Great supply of stickers, school supplies, puzzles, boardgames, and miscellaneous plain colored clothes.
