Friendly. Great Customer service. Great Quality, nothing home depot could do with the support (frame for the studio project), and cheap? (not sure, i thought it was pretty cheap.)
I was completely lost, in need of cut wood to make a support for my oil painting class. My college instructor had called in to get the wood ready for a certain amount of people that were going to head to this location. Sadly to my dismay, one of my classmates probably changed his/her mind about not going to get it from this location. But, the man helping me double checked files and even the back.
Finally, he helped me out and asked me what I wanted. One of the requirements for the support was really confusing, so the man helped me with giving me a few options of what I could do and told me or I could just come back and he'd cut the wood for me if necessary for free. And told me the options again. I got the two wood pieces I needed and he helped me bring it out. And it did not take very long. The whole experience was pleasant. Super friendly folk here. [:
1 8 ft. length of 1"x3" clear pine and one 8. ft. length of 3/4" quarter-round = 8.79 + 4.72 = 13.51 subtotal. -

Going here today (my first time) made my whole week. My husband and I needed to buy a large piece of plywood, and since we live about a half a mile away, and don't own a car, we had planned to just carry it home. Awkward, yes, but exercise is good for you.
Anyway, within about 30 seconds of walking in we knew everyone's name and we had more friendly people helping us than we knew what to do with. By the time we had decided what to get, both Dave and Eric were offering us free ride/delivery with their pickup trucks on their own time! In no time, Dave found a truck somewhere and dropped us off at home with our unweildy purchase.
Sadly, these family-owned lumber places are going out of business. Going to the big box stores leaves me grumpy, feeling like I've wasted my day. Going to Bruce Bauer today left me in a good mood I expect to last all week. A big thanks to everyone there! -

They are friendly and super helpful. I special ordered a piece for my anderson door here and when I picked it up they helped me load it into my car and secured it for me, which was a huge help since I had my 3 year old with me.
I recently gave them a call looking for some garage door parts and they pointed me in the right direction even though they didn't carry them. I look forward to shopping here again. -

We initially had a very good experience with Bruce Bauer Lumber & Supply, but they dropped the ball badly at the end. I worked with Ross (mainly by e-mail) to order an Anderson exterior French door, and he made the process as easy as possible. He cheerfully sent me the prices of all the options we were considering, and helped us tweak the order until we had things just right. The final price was the lowest we could find in the area.
Delivery went smoothly too, almost too smoothly in fact, as their deliveryman/scheduler Rick arrived about an hour early. Fortunately there was a worker onsite to receive it, and it got to us in just over three weeks, which is apparently a tight turn-around for these doors.
However, the vinyl (exterior) side of the active door had a small defect, and after some back-and-forth with Bruce Bauer and the Anderson Rep, they finally agreed to replace it, but delivery would take roughly a month. As all our new doors (including the new French door) were due to be stained and finished well before then, I asked explicitly by phone if the entire active door panel would be taken, or just the exterior/vinyl portion. I was assured only the exterior portion would be replaced. It turns out they didn't know what they were talking about, and the whole door had to be replaced, thus wasting the money we spent having the door stained and finished.
Bruce Bauer refused to take responsibility for their error, and when I suggested they come back and re-install the defective door, they said they'd charge $350 to do so, and void my warranty. So when push comes to shove, don't count on Bruce Bauer to stand by what their employees tell you. -

Superb costumer service.
I needed a few screws for some curtain rods that I was installing. I quickly drove over to the store and went in the driveway. As I did I looked behind me and realized that someone was closing the gate.
I asked him if they were closed since I just needed a handful of screws. He said no problem and walked me inside.
He helped me find the right screws and went to the counter with me. He then realized that the registers had already by closed out. i only had a couple of dollars on me and the bill was 70 cents more than I had. The younger guy at the counter took out 70 cents and covered me. He told me I could repay him next time I come in.
I cannot get over how nice that was.
They will always get my business. This is customer service at its finest.

This place is the best.
I will never cross the threshold of a big box home improvement center again. It seems like I am always in the middle of a project of some sort. The greatest aggravation usually comes from having to make five or six trips to the big box lumber yard only to be greeted by a kid who was a computer programmer last week and knows NOTHING about construction or where to find anything in the store he working in.
Bruce Bauer is a breath of fresh air in a world where customer service is a thing of the past. Absolutely the best customer service. The staff is knowledgeable about the products and eager and willing to help. I have recently replaced a window in my home and the staff in the window department took great care of me, provided helpful information that a home owner would not know to ask, and provided great follow through.
The experience working with the folks at Bruce Bauer was great, and I do not care that I MIGHT have saved 39 cents on the pack of galvanized screws at the big box store. You can not put a price on your sanity, and my time is valuable, very valuable. I can tell that the company culture at Bruce Bauer respects both. -

Bruce Bauer is a fantastic place. My partner and I made a gorgeous king size bed for our bedroom and a full size bed for the guest room. When I say made, I literally mean made. I designed the beds with sketches and measurements of all the cuts of wood that we needed.
The wood selection is incredible and we picked a bunch of birch 1 1/2" thick plywood sheets to make the beds. We had planned on just strapping the plywood to the top of the car, but the guys there cut all the sheets to the dimensions that I wanted. They charged us like $20 for a lot of precise cutting that I could have done myself at home, but wouldn't have come out as perfect as their machines do. Plus, by having them do this, it saved me so much time and made transporting all the wood much easier.
The beds look insanely fabulous. Not for everyone, but if you have a modern asthetic in your home, you can get a super high end look by making them yourself. The beds are custom and we get so many compliments on them. Also, we saved about 2K by doing the work ourselves and not giving it to DWR or CB2.
We never would have gotten the quality of wood or such precise cutting at Home Depot. These guys are true professionals, with no attitude and the highest level of customer service that I have ever experienced at a lumberyard.
They have everything here and I;'m so happy that we found BB. No more self checkout at HD. Yeah! -

Fantastic. Very friendly and helpful staff. The quality of wood is top notch - far exceeds what you could find at a home improvement store. They helped me build a redwood planter. When in the area its the only place I go!
Update: They help you make custom Beer Pong tables, too! -

This place is fantastic. I went in with a plan for garden boxes. They changed my design with the info to back it up. They let me hand select the pieces I wanted then cut everything to my exact specifications. They even had the hardware and chicken wire for the bottoms. I am definitely going to find a reason to come back here. Donuts and coffee on the weekends! They love dogs! Are you serious??? They are a little more expensive than the big box stores but you totally get what you pay for in terms of wood quality and service. My garden boxes are the envy of the neighborhood.

I have mixed feelings about this place. They carry good quality lumber and building materials, however they are more often than not over-priced (certainly compared to OSH & Home Depot, but occasionally relative to smaller independent hardware stores).
Where Bruce Bauer excels is their customer service. The staff are friendly and helpful. On the one occasions when I needed to return some warped and wet lumber, they let me come back and exchange it from the new stock they had recently received.
I will certainly keep buying building supplies from here, but only when I'm looking for items of particular quality I can't find elsewhere and am willing to pay their somewhat inflated price tags. -

I like this place however It can be alittle hard to find. They are a good source for wood, most hardware. They excel at doors & windows and decking. Staff helpful however sometimes it hard to get their attention. Over all I am a fan.

Yes - prices are slightly higher than home depot. A 2x6 (8ft) piece of knotty fir would have cost $3.71 at home depot vs $3.99 at bruce bauer. But much much better quality lumber. (Although lumber prices do fluctuate)
And like the rest of the reviewers have said, SUPERB customer service. The Bauer family is just so warm! And yes, free donuts on Saturday. They never rushed to answer all my questions and I felt like they really cared about the project I was doing. I appreciate all the advice they gave me and I would definitely like to support more local neighborhood stores since I'm a resident of Mountain View. -

We were right in the middle of moving our business when I found myself in need of a special type of lumber. I consulted the yellow pages (first mistake) and phoned the closest lumber yard. The person who answered the telephone informed me that they were not open for business that they were busy taking inventory AND that the next closest lumberyard was way South of here. ADDITIONALLY, she informed me that it is not the norm for a lumberyard to be open on Saturday.
I hung up in despair and tried Google and found Bruce Bauer Lumber in Mt. View, 15 min. South of our office. I was greeted on the telephone by friendly person who was well informed. He told me that they did indeed have the produt that I needed and that they were open until 4:00 PM & would be happy to assist. He even gave me detailed driving directions and his parting works were, "becareful it raining out there". (hmmmm, wonder why the first lady would lie?)
When I walked in I could smell the familiar scent of a lumber yard, the kind that you remember as a kid. The staff was very friendly, informatitive & even offered a "guilt free" doughnut & coffee while I waited. The people who loaded the lumber made certain that the lumber would not scratch the interior of our SUV!
While it may be WAY south of us (according to the first lady), I would make the trip anyday, rain or shine. -

I would not recommend this place to anyone. They dropped the ball many times when I ordered a couple of marvyn windows. I had measurements done by my installer and brought them in to bauer. They couldn't even copy it correctly to their system. When the windows came one of them was broken on the inside and the other was off by 6in in height. They did replace the sache on the window that came broken from marvyn's. I went back to them and the same attendant who took the measurements would not agree he had seen the paper or written the measurements to their system. On top of that he started shouting back at me, I was outraged! Their manager ended up calling me at home and apologizing. As for the window, he wanted me to keep it and order another one which he would then split the cost. I was again outraged, why would I order anything from them if they had already messed up my 1st order? After a long time on the phone he ended up agreeing to split the cost of the window they ordered incorrectly.

Awesome place:
My wife's family just gave us an "heirloom" cradle that was built by her grandfather. It might have looked good once, but when we got it, it looked like someone had left it out in the rain for a year or so. I went into Bruce Bauer to ask for some advice on how to fix it up and I was blown away by their customer service. Joel fixed me up with new paint, sanding supplies and wood glue and even showed me how to reattach a section that had fallen off. Our new baby will be very thankful to not wake up with splinters or have her cradle break while she is sleeping in it. Thanks Joel, and I'm sure I'll be back when my wife gets her next "priceless" family heirloom. -

These guys are crazy helpful, they try so hard I don't know how they make any money...unless... the business model of the Big Box Stores is wrong, and humans actually do give their business to a company that gives them the chance to speak with a knowledgeable salesman about their projects. The prices are no higher than their more tumorously inflated competitors, especially if you factor in the quality and the fact that Bruce Bauer have a lot more and better choices in many critical area. I've been coming here since we bought our house 20 years ago. I also shop at many other hardware stores of all sizes between Campbell and San Francisco; Bruce Bauer really is my favorite. No Hummel figurines or greeting cards, just high quality lumber and the means to turn it into your plan.

My wife and I have been customers of Bruce Bauer for about 10 years. On the first day we stepped inside their store, we learned that they treat every customer as if they are their most important customer. From helping us build an entire house on our own, to a much smaller Boy Scout Eagle project, they have been by our side providing sound advice, quality products and outstanding customer service. Beyond outstanding. They have eagerly taken our problems and made them their own. They are quick to admit when they don't have an answer, but work tirelessly until they do. Joel, John, Hella and whole Bruce Bauer family have taken great care of us and are a true pleasure to work with. If you want your next project, large or small, to go smoothly and be more enjoyable, visit Bruce Bauer!

If you need top quality wood or composite materials for any building or woodworking project, this is the place to go. The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. Almost everything is in stock. If it isn't, it will be delivered in a couple of days. They do not even charge you delivery for a big project. And they also sell really good tools! I was using Bruce Bauer Lumber in a few projects, including the new house siding, windows and doors trim and just recently a deck. It was always a great pleasure to work with Bruce Bauer store. I am glad these guys are in my neighborhood.

TOTALLY helpful staff. These guys have moulding you can't find anywhere else, and much better quality lumber than anywhere else I've found - yes it's cheaper at Home depot, but their lumber sucks. These guys have good quality lumber and folks that will actually help you figure out what you need for your project. They are closed on Sundays as most contractors don't build on Sunday. (There are free donuts on Sat! too.)

I cannot recommend Bruce Bauer Lumber & Supply more highly. A long time peninsula business, they folks have thrived because they consistently deliver fine service. During a couple window installation projects, Darryl Bauer would email me at 6 a.m., answering my questions. They showed up when they said they were going to show...and consistently were professional, friendly, and enjoyable to do business with.

I was building a structure for Sukkot, a Jewish holiday festival. I have never built one before so I sought the help of a friend. My friend drew me a diagram of what I needed for the roof - 6 2x4s with notches on either end (and gave me the notch measurements). I have no idea how to create notches in wood and with Sukkot fast approaching, I was feeling nervous as to whether or not I would be able to get the prescribed materials for the roof. First I went to Osh, and they said they would not be able to notch it for me, and they said neither would Home Depot. I decided to try a local place with a more service oriented approach. I was very lucky to find Bruce Bauer. They notched the wood for me for a small fee which was very reasonable, and it was available for same day pickup! They also didn't scoff at me for having little knowledge of lumber. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and approachable. It's sad that we as consumers have gotten used to being treated poorly at big box stores - skip the other places and come to the local guys!!

I had a great experience shopping at this lumber shop. I was specifically looking for Eichler beam flashing for the beams in my atrium. The employees who work there are super friendly. I searched 5 hardware stores and lumber yards before I was able to find exactly what I needed. At first, I had given up and was on my way out the door. Then, Paul (who really looked like a textbook lumberjack), asked me what it was I was looking for. He lead me directly to where they were. It was in the actual "lumber room" and I had not gone that far into the store. The flashing was there and in great condition. He helped to carry them to the cashier and also helped put them in my car. He was really friendly and added a great deal of information on how to work with that flashing as well. If you are an Eichler owner and need flashing for your beams, don't go to Lowes, Home Depot, Mintons, Sunnyvale Lumber, or Osh. Been there! Bruce Bauer Lumber & Supply is THE place to go.

This store has it all. From installed decks to help choose material color and type, to windows, doors and lumber.. Bruce Bauer has excellent service. Prices are higher than the big box stores but not by whole lot and to me worth it's worth a small premium avoiding the frustration and lack of knowledge found in the other monster stores.
