Well I decided to try this place out due to the reviews and it being somewhat close downtown.  I called to make an appointment but the guy on the phone said it's only walkins.  The place isn't very hard to find and it's located in a strip mall.  I had to wait about 10 minutes before it was my turn.

The chairs are apparently from the 1950's which I thought was cool and the sinks were super antique too.  It turns out that this is my barbers grandfathers place originally, which is now owned by his uncle.  The barber was super meticulous and cut my hair exactly the way I like it!  A head massage at the end of the cut was very nice as well.

It's $20 for a cut and I'm definitely happy with the service!  You simply can't go wrong with a barber that is a third generation in the craft!  I didn't catch my barbers name but he was a very nice guy.  Highly recommend and will be a returning customer as long as I can!

This place is amazing.  My haircut, aside from being quick and cheap ($20), came out great.  I truly don't remember the last time I had one this good.  The dudes were also super-nice.

This definitely a no-frills place but it works for me because I just want a haircut.

Having recently moved to Dallas, finding a good barber was a hard thing to do.  I first went to Brownie's in October of 2011 and was really happy with my haircut.  It is run by a very friendly man named Ray who's father purchased it from the original "Brownie" some time ago.  There are old sports and movie posters all over the wall and TV on the back wall.  The first time I went was during the Rangers-Rays playoff series and so the barber moved my seat so I could watch the game while getting a haircut.
If you're lucky, some days you get a free beer (or two) while getting your haircut as well.  The barbers are quick and precise and make sure to ask if you like what they're doing to your hair.  Not only do they give great men's haircuts but it's only about $19 which I feel like is unheard of today.  If you're a guy looking for a good solid haircut, Brownie's is the best bet.

I have had the same person cutting my hair for the past 27 years so it was with some skepticism that I went to Brownie's.  It's been a couple of months since my last haircut and it was beginning to show.  I walked in just as Ray was finishing up with another customer.  Ray did a fantastic job with my hair and even trimmed my moustache  and eyebrows.  I will definitely be back.

In 1984, when I first moved to Dallas, I found myself in need of a haircut. As a young man-about-town at the time, I asked around among my new friends for their recommendations. "BROWNIE'S" They all told me. Considering that my friends were some of the hippest people in Dallas at the time, I assumed "Brownie's" was some kind of unfortunately named unisex place with flitting hairdressers, pounding rock music, and juicy neighborhood gossip. I could not have been more wrong. And my friends could not have been more right.

Brownie's was located then on Oak Lawn Avenue near Lemmon Avenue (where some shoe repair shop is now). Later, about the time Eatzi's opened across the street and rent skyrocketed, they finally settled in on Lemmon Avenue, across from the deservedly-famous Mia's Mexican restaurant, not very far from their original location.

Imagine my surprise back in 1984 when at Brownie's I found a throw-back to barber shops of yore! An older gentleman commanded the first chair and a much younger man worked the second chair. That younger guy was the son of the older man. The boy was about 18 or so and he cut my hair that day under the careful eye of his dad. The shop was plain, masculine, welcoming and professional. And it smelled wonderfully of talc and razor strops.

That kid was RAY VASQUEZ and he still cuts my hair today at Brownie's, about a quarter of a century later. That's a lot of haircuts.

I was a client when he got his first car and then his second, and then a blushing bride, and then the birth of his kids (and even the recording a CD of Mexican music ~ he's a talented singer and musician!). And Ray has seen me through times both tough (when I had to ask for a haircut on credit when I found myself job hunting and growing desperate) and wonderful (when I finally got married and he groomed me for the wedding pictures).

Sadly, Ray's dad passed a few months ago. The thousands of us who knew him feel the loss. Last time I was there a white floral cross occupied the first chair, Ray continued to work the second chair and his nephew, Eddie, a younger man who joined them a few years ago, knows what he's doing at a third chair.

The place is strewn with a selection of rare and interesting "1950's stuff," like photos of outrageously finned cars and Elvis and stunning black-&-white portraits of Dallas skylines from the past, including one of a relative working on the rising skeleton of a downtown skyscraper. And their magazine offerings (while you wait, if necessary) is unmatched! A selection that will astound you, including ALL the favorites...

All of this is to say that you cannot go wrong at Brownie's. These are folks serious about the quality of their work, who care about you, who bring you into their "family" gently and warmly. It's a MAN'S place that welcomes "weekend dads" and their sons, a variety of men from the nearby gay community, rich guys from nearby Highland Park, and any other guy in a 20-mile radius who appreciates one hell of  a good barber shop and the casual friendliness of those who recognize you and appreciate your business.

For those of us who want nothing fancy in the way of a barber shop (including no rat-tail-comb-waving victims-of-fashion flailing away at your head while dancing to Lady Gaga), BROWNIE'S is the place for you. No appointments, no calling ahead, just walk in and be greeted by name! Last time I checked, a perfect haircut exactly to your specifications cost $20 (plus a $5 tip if you're a responsible citizen). It doesn't get any better or any less expensive than this. You'll come out a handsomer man.

(Ray is a man who knows LOTS of "off-color" jokes, by the way, which he is happy to murmur into your ear while snipping away at renegade hairs. See if you have a joke that can top any of his.)

Oh, and about the name of the place: Ask 'em. It dates from 1929 and has had a number of owners, leading up to Ray's leadership today, inherited from his dad.

I promise: You're going to love this place.

Okay so I didn't personally get my hair cut but I was involved, they were cool and I showed them 2 pictures in a magazine and told them well make it like between these 2 and they did!  Also they remembered even though I was not there to supervise and cut appropriately...

Sat morning ritual haircut between 8 and 9 am. Unbelievable that Ray opens this early and i am so grateful! That early and there is never a line. He was finishing one cut and I was next. Waiting later in the morning on Sat may have a bit of a wait.

Ray said he's had a few more people come in and mention the found him on Yelp so elected to come in! Being more of an avid food yelper, it's always great to hear that these other yelps are noticed utilized!

Have gotten my hair cut in the elitist salons and chain hair butchers. Now that I've found Brownie's I've found a home. My condolences to the guys this week is the 1 yr anniversary of Ray's father's death. He started Brownie's many years ago. He cut my hair a few times and at 78 still did a mean flat top. The other two guys are continuing a great family tradition!

I'll say this place is probably great for a lot of people.  If you want a place to hang out, shoot the shit and need a really basic haircut then this is your place.  In fact, most of their customers look like they come in every week since they are all known by name and already have really short hair when they walk in or are otherwise bald.

My experience: I walked in and there were 5-6 guys ahead of me on a Saturday afternoon.  I assumed 2-3 them were already done and just hanging out or waiting for a friend in the chair so I open a magazine (good selection of Men's mags I must say).  We are talking hour long haircuts each, I swear one guys was completely bald on 80% of his head and the rest was just stubble - an hour??!!  It's walk-ins only and there are also only 2 barbers working at any time so expect to wait but it did not look like waiting for their usuals who want to spend their day in a barber shop.

My actual cut wasn't the best or worst I've had but not bad by any means.  Also, it's $20 before the tip so kind of high for man cut but that neighborhood is somewhat nicer so understandable.  I'll probably try somewhere else next time but it's personal preference - I just don't like making an afternoon of a haircut and think I could find a better cut.

I been using Brownies for years now. They are so friendly and a pleasure to be around. $20 for a haircut includes a head massage.

A no nonsense trip to the past, no fru fru uptight salon attitude here, expect an excellent haircut for an excellent price. Ray is a great guy, very friendly and would make his late father proud. I've known these guys for years and yes you may have a short wait but there is plenty of reading material to keep you occupied and bottom line: excellent value for your dollar. Can't go wrong here.

This is the best barber shop in Dallas, hands down! If you don't want your hair cut by a women, then this is your place. I moved here from California and searched until I found a place that resembled my old place back in Cali. Sure, Dallas has plenty of places where a man can get their hair cut, but most of those places have snotty girls and people cutting hair who just got started and won't be there when you go back.  On the other hand, Ray is best at what he does. He's been at the same place forever and loves his job. He knows almost everyone by name and the quality of the cut, attention to the client, and price, is head and shoulders above the rest. I would highly recommend it unless you enjoy a women cutting your hair.
