Thursday and some friday nights, the best grateful dead tribute band! Can't beat it!
Alcohol is not cheap though and there's a 7$ cover. -

Can't think of ANYWHERE I've ever been where the service is worse. Two strikes they're out

I ventured out to Brownie's 23 East tonight with my partner. Saying I left disappointed, offended and enraged is an understatement. We arrived around 9:30 p.m., and the joint was empty. We went across the street to a quaint pizzeria and enjoyed a slice. Thirty minutes later, we went back to Brownie's, hand-in-hand. Clearly, the bouncer despised the sight. He grimaced as we stepped through the door, and as soon as I handed him my ID I swear to God he muttered a homophobic slur under his breath. I replied, "Excuse me, sir?" and he merely slapped my ID back in my hand and said in a voice thick with sarcasm, "Have a nice night, we've reached capacity" as he smirked and his fellow bouncer burst into laughter behind him. Seeing that the place was still nearly empty, my own partner -- extremely sensitive and newly out -- started to tear up. Needless to say, we will never be back there again.

The wife and I stopped by here last night to see a band we really like. It was our first visit and it will be our last. The band was great but we expected that. Here is what we didn't expect.
* The seating/sight lines are terrible. For much of this place you will hear but not see the band.
* Speaking of hearing, the acoustics are bad.
* No waitress service. Plan on that ever enjoyable fight at the bar.
* No food. None. Not even bar food. We were told you can bring in whatever you want. Weird.
The Internet is a wonderful thing. For bands we like, we'll watch their web sites and wait until they play at a better venue. -

If you are 21/22 and looking to meet someone, have at it. If you are 23 or older hit the train and go to a real bar to dance.

Definitely not a fan of this place, but maybe because my shoes stick to the floor when I "try" to walk (I say that because when its a weekend night you cant move in there!), the cover price is beyond rediculous for live cover bands with no originality, I dont drink very often so when I do its not at a place like this, and drinking with immature "I just turned 21" kids is not my idea of fun anyway. Years ago it was a cool place to go and play pool while having a drink or two, but now thats even impossible with all the people in your way.
I know its a hike and annoying, but find a DD, or take a cab and head to the city! -

I used to come here a lot last summer when I lived in Villanova. They used to have a pretty good Friday happy hour deal, but I can't seem to find anything about it on their website. It seems like they're under new management.
Last night, my friends and I were on the main line and looking for a place to dance, and this was the only place I knew about.
The food is pretty meh, borderline gross, but I didn't really expect it to be more. There are pool tables and beer pong tables, and a stage for the live bands / booty shaking contests / hot messes. The live cover bands I've seen play pretty much the same songs. The DJs tend to mix music from the top 40 and then those older classic rock songs everyone loves to belt at the top of their lungs but can't really dance to. I wasn't really feeling it last night.
I always hear that tons of Nova and St. Joe's kids come here, but I somehow manage to come on nights during the summer when most students are gone or when there are mostly older people and creepers. And there's always that one older woman rockin' out by herself. Always.
It's an okay place to get drunk for cheap and skank the night away on the dance floor, but it's not one of my favorites. -

I only went here once on St. Patty's day because a friend had nothing but good things to say about it. Apparently they're now under new management.
Between their ridiculous cover charge, the crappy band and having them constantly saying they were out of the liquors that were part of their drink specials, this place was a huge disappointment. -

my review for this place now will be a lot different than if i had written it when i was in college. back then, i went here every wed nite for sink or swim -$5 cover and 50 cent drafts, $1 well drinks. that's perfect for a college drinker, and i always had a blast when i went there.
now that i'm out of college, i can't go near this place. they pack way too many people into the place-must be a fire hazzard. if you don't get there early and snag a seat at the bar for the night then it's really hard to get in for the rest of your drinks. when they have the upstairs open, then bar is usually not as crowded, but you still might have to wait a while for service. the bands are ok...same old cover bands that play the same songs. it's nice to get trashed and try to dance on the dance floor among all the sweaty frat boys. or it was when i was 21...
thursdays are (or at least used to be) some type of hippie night with cover band that play a bunch of 60's and 70's rock. not as busy on those nights; you will probably encounter more of the stoner college kids than the frat kids, so they are more mellow.
the bathrooms are always gross, but that's what happens after a bunch of girls puke all over it. bring your own TP. floors are sticky indeed from all the drinks that get spilled. the bartenders can go either way; some of them are real snobs who will ignore you at all costs and others will be friendly and make sure to take care of you as soon as they can. i guess it depends on who you tip well.
it's right next to a police department so don't you dare try to drive away if you've been drinking. luckily, there is a train around the corner and there are always cabs outside ready to cart you home.
i might stop in every now and then just for the nostalgia of my college days. but definitely early...because now i'm old and i need my sleep.Listed in: Sink or Swim

Jackass college dive.
Fun if you're in that demographic, but definitely not a net positive for the neighborhood. -

Radio 104.5 and Thorpe Productions recently teamed up to host New Music Tuesdays here. If you're familiar with the old music night that Jaxon and WMMR had at Grape Street then this is pretty much the same deal - a fairly good showcase of local Philly music and beyond, only the music can be very radio friendly. Tune your radio dial to the station and the music here isn't going to be much different.
I'd give Brownies 4 stars if the other nights were like this one. but it can be average or below at best. A fairly annoying cover band takes the stage over the weekend, big screen TVs show sports, the place gets crowded with people who might make you feel fairly old, and the pool tables are semi decent.
It's an alright place to go. Just not every night.Listed in: The Worst!!, Music Venues, Suburbia

Both the top and bottom floors offer a decent view of a stage where I've heard a few bands play. Don't like the music? You can always play pool or enjoy their cheap chicken wings and pizza (good drunk food, nothing more) while you push through the throng of drunk students from nearby colleges.
Service is decent, bouncers are friendly. Not a bad spot, but I feel old walking in there sometimes. -

The best specials anywhere on a Wednesday night. It's definitely a good time.

Brownie's was your average suburban dance pub. They had a good band when I went, and the people were friendly. The DJ was ok, and the pub was crawling with tons of what seemed to be underagers. This bar caters to the St. Joe's crowd, so I positive that there were at least ten19 year old kids there. It wasn't expensive, and it was a fun place to dance.
I had a blast, but I give my best friend credit for that! -

Damn here again?!
When you get in for free and get free food, it's almost impossible to rate it one star. Which is why I gave two.
Maybe if you went to St. Joes or Nova you might have a good time. Maybe if you love crappy music and being crammed in a tight bar you'll have a good time. I'm not sure exactly.
Brownies is one of those place you would only step foot in on a Wednesday night, when its free.
When I was younger it was alright because I was broke and looking to go out anyway, But I've grown up. Go to a real club. -

Sink or swim Wednesday are the best. Where else can you drink for 75 cents? They have cheesy cover bands there as well on Wednesday nights that are a lot of fun. Friday's are good for happy hour as well with a dollar drinks and they have a buffet of greasy munchies of fries, and wings..
It is popular among the St. Joseph's University crowd on wed and Fridays gets more of the better looking Villanova crowd for happy hour. -

I don't think I would come here unless I was affiliated with soem sort of group with a discount. The drinks are pretty pricey. However, for an event like a bachelor/ette party it is great. They sell brcaelets with unlimited booze ($25 maybe) and food and a private seating area...and a stripper if that is your thing. Every time I have been here the music is great. Food kinda sucks, but whatev.

Cover charges gets you in and gets you cheap watery beer, terrible pizza and wings, and a terrible band. If you're in college and a mindless meat head or bimbo I guess this place works, but not for people who actually have taste in things.

I had a very poor experience at Brownie's that ended with a black eye, bruised ribs, a separated shoulder, and a concussion. Do you want an experience like that? If so, be sure to check this place out!

This place is awesome. Always packed with a young crowd. Live Music almost every night and probably the best Friday happy hour in Philly! Can't wait to go back this Friday, hint hint If you call first and tell them your coming in for Happy Hour they'll give you a two hour open bar. Love you Brownies!

If you're going to go, go on Wednesday night. Cover is $5, and from 10 to midnight, there are fifty cent drafts and one dollar drinks. Is it worth it, considering you have to deal with fratty guys groping you on the dance floor while listening to a cover band play Blink 182? Probably not, but if you like cheap drinks, smoking indoors, and Villanova students galore, this is the place for you.

cheap drinks, bar food what more can you ask for on a wednesday night? had one of there fish bowl dtrinks that cost 5 bucks. couldnt taste any liquor in it so i got another shot and poured it in. Wednesdays are the best night. its only a 5 dollar cover and that gets you free food, mostly wings, pizza, fries, and soft pretzels. he night i went there were dollar buds, so my friends and i split a 6 pack. the live bands are ok if you like live bands. i grew up in the area so i ran in to anyone i ever went to Elementary or High school with Kinda wierd. but if your looking for a place to party and the time is ticking away Brownies is Sweet!!!!!!!

so...i went out with a guy-friend to this new place to my eyes, and it was alright. there was a really nice band, "split decision", and they actually played majority of the request that people requested. but anyway, the only thing is that it didn't have any seats. there was a very long bar in the middle of the place without any bar stools....like, what is that?!?! the food wasn't all that great, just drunk food...lol! other than that, there was a big dance floor, and that is really all that matters!!!!
