It pains me to have to write this review because Brown Sugar Cafe on Jersey Street is likely now closed. :(
I've been going to this restaurant consistently for close to ten years, and have not once tired of it. The food has always been good, the service has always been good, and it's affordable and just an overall great experience. Brown Sugar Cafe has become one of my favorite restaurants in Boston, and I am really very sad that they have closed the location that is closest to where I work and live. -
Review from Ali E.
My lab/office has ordered take-out from here a few times, usually the wimpiest/nonspiciest things. For a big order, be prepared to wait at least a half hour for delivery. There was a little confusion trying to order for one of the girls who's Celiac (no soy sauce, no vinegar, no gluten) but all in all a good experience. Definitely a better lunch meeting option than Pizza.
The yellow curry is yummy (I am pineapple-averse and got an order without it). The pad thai is pretty good, very peanutty. STELLAR scallion pancakes. Crispy and awesome. The drunken noodles were too spicy for my WASPy tastebuds (and the stealth spicy that tastes awesome at first so you take another big bite and then seconds later your mouth is a raging inferno of death) but my more sophistocated palated officemates seemed to enjoy it.
Damnit, now I want Thai food.Listed in: Work Schmerk

A conversaion often had by my friends in other thai restaurants:
"So what do you think of your ____?"
"It's good....but it's no Brown Sugar"
My usual order:
vegetarian tom yum goong soup
country style vegetarian pad thai
thai iced coffee
spring rolls
Minus 1 star because the take out has been lacking lately.Listed in: A Girl and Her City, Soup and Salad, And I Would Walk 500 Miles

I blame Brown Sugar Cafe for the fact that no thai food tastes as good to me as it does here. My friends won't go to Thai restaurants with me anymore b/c I'm never satisfied. Brown Sugar was my first Thai experience and set too high a standard. I've since also realized that their food is a little different than the thai food you get anywhere else. Aside from the largess of their portions, I'm not enough of a food connoiseur to articulate the difference.
Anything I've gotten here, I've enjoyed. You just can't go wrong. I recommend the spicy dishes, but you really can't lose with whatever you choose.
If you go here during the day or on a date, I recommend hitting the rose garden on Park Dr after your meal. -

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!
Everytime I come back to Boston, I make sure to eat here. I cry because as much as I love SF, there is no Thai place as good as Brown Sugar. It can get crowded as it's so popular but I like the decor and feel of the place. I've been to the BS near BU too but prefer this one.
I love the spicy chili basil style and Brown Sugar has a unique fried prawn dish with this flavoring. Half the time I get sick from eating this because it's so spicy but I can't help myself.
Last time I was in town we went there for lunch and I didn't see the prawns on the menu and was freaked out that they changed the menu. (Food is very important to me =) ) Apparently the prawns are not on the lunch menu but after begging the waitress, the chef was able to make my sorry out-of-town behind my fav dish as the kitchen was slow.
Also love their green tea ice cream with sticky rice. -

Okay I've been to Thailand so I know what good Thai food tastes like! The food is authentic, aromatic, and comes accompanied with a variety of sauces.
Ordered the steamed chive dumplings with a light sauce.
Next came the veg pad thai (amazing - probably my fav dish), and jungle curry. Everything was perfect.
The place is on the smallish side, but we managed to snatch a table. -

This thai restaurant gets 5 stars for having the BEST green curry with duck in the city. The duck is juicy and honey roasted, surrounded by a thin, salty-sweet layer of duckfat. This dish is the standard by which I measure all thai restaurants. And it delivers! Whole coconut milk, adequate heat and sweetness, excellent white rice, colorful and fresh vegetables, not overcooked.
The pad-see-ew is also a great dish there (flat wide rice noodle dish with veggies and sweet soy sauces).
You can count on fresh food, excellent taste, and good service here. Lunch is a bargain with most things being about half the price of dinner. Delivery is fast (cash only)... and comes in a high end turquoise bag.
The Thai iced tea is refreshing, as ever. I love this thai restaurant. Best in boston- now that the 30 year old Bangkok Cuisine on Mass Ave moved to the burbs. It was my favorite but now Brown Sugar holds the torch.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I came here in hopes that this place was gonna be as good as everyone said, but I was only disappointed. For $10 a piece when it comes to their noodle dishes, I wouldn't have thrown down a quarter. It was horrible. I got the pork pad see you. Biggest mistake ever. Some of my girlfriends are vegetarians so they got vege pad thais. They enjoyed their food, but I tasted the pad thai and was not a fan.
My pork pad see you was cooked kind of funny. The pork, I am almost positive, was spoiled. It had a stinky kind of stench and I could taste the stink in my mouth. It was disgusting. So I relied on my noodles and broccoli to fill me. Mistake #2: they did not use chinese broccoli, but regular broccoli. I'm not sure if they're trying to be more Americanized and less authentic or something, but blech. So after I ate the three broccoli florets that they decided to toss in, I was left with noodles and sauce. Bland! I didn't even finish my puny $10 meal which didn't even fill me up. I went to Burger King after.
In all of the reviews that I have written for Thai places, I have always said that you should just go to Rod Dee for cheaper and tastier food. I am writing it again and still stand by my own opinion. I've been to Brown Sugar once and let it be known, I will never return. -

The boy: "So, after we do errands we can hit up Brown Sugar for some Thai."
Me: "Aaawwwe, that's where we had our second date."
The boy: "Awe, it is."
Me: "I just puked a little in my mouth a little bit from that."
The food is delicious. Totally start with the fresh spring rolls. They are a great palate cleanser and make you feel like you are eating healthy as heck. We had a bottle of wine and I was impressed with the wine service and attention to detail in serving it. There are also a couple of Thai beers on the menu, which are fun to try. Even better, Brown Sugar has a patio outside in the nicer months.Listed in: Outside Drinking

Huge favorite of NU/BU students and anyone in the area, really. Located close to Northeastern's campus, Brown sugar is a huge favorite in the neighborhood. Place tends to get crowded at night, particularly when there are Red Sox games (although there's no place in the area that doesn't get crowded, really...) so go early or just avoid the area on those game nights.
They offer the traditional Thai favorites, such as fried rice, pad thai, pad see-yew, etc. Unlike other Thai restaurants in the area they tend to have more seafood on their menu. I wasn't a fan of their beef or chicken satay, which could be occasionally really chewy, but their spring rolls were good. Waitstaff is very friendly and they will recognize you after a while. When ordering takeout they will even bring it to their waiting area if they know you're sitting there. They definitely have vegetarian options and don't mind if you want to tweak your order.
They are also quite good with making sure you have water in your glass and will want to know if you want dessert. Fried ice cream is a must, especially since they drizzle honey on top. Sometimes, though, it's not freshly made. :(
Recommended items: Spring rolls, tofu triangles, fried rice, curry, pad see-yew, thai iced tea and fried ice cream!Listed in: Places to eat in or around…

I never liked the color Brown. It's very plain. Just like the food and service at Brown Sugar.
I asked the waitress for recommendations and instead received none. She did my job of being confused by the variety of choices presented upon by the menu.
Overall, I would not go here again. Brown Sugar is meant for your tea not your dinner. -

Thai comfort food.
I liked this place in a greasy westernized thai food sort of way.
The dishes are definitely tasty, but it really doesn't feel that authentic. Still the staff are attentive and nice, and the food is tasty, but nothing you eat feels even moderately healthy, and it's all a bit over-priced.
Still this is GOOD greasy westernized thai food. Not BAD greasy westernized thai food that so many other restaurants in Boston seem to serve. -

Tucked neatly along the Fenz, you'll find Brown Sugar. Tiptoe through the romance to Jersey street between Park and Queensbury. We met with the rest of our party and now needed a table for 7 which was accommodated quickly without a reservation.
We started with an order of crab rangoon and some limeade. Listen, I know that's not really Thai food and it contains minuscule amounts of crab, but I can't help it, I love them...even if the menu says they contain pickles. I was sort of surprised by their choice of sauce. Sweet & Sour? Awkward. I'm usually more drawn to a plum or peanut sauce with rangoon, but it worked out alright. Until Liz chomped onto a rangoon that ejaculated all over the side of Jarf's skull. I couldn't even look at it. We bag to wonder if we were perhaps on an episode of Candid Camera and that the rangoon was spring loaded. Amazing, just amazing.
For dinner, we shared an order of Kua Gai, a wide rice noodle served with scallions, egg, stir fried with beef. It arrived to the table served on a bed of romaine and we scarfed it up very quickly. One odd thing that we witnessed was that the waitress told our guests that they couldn't just order drinks, they needed to order at least an appetizer as some part of their liquor law. They only serve wine and beer here as well, so don't expect to order a "zombie" or a "suffering bastard" from the bar. -

Really good Thai food and only half a block from home! How much better can it get!
Everything is really fresh and authentic. I love getting served my meal inside a pineapple. If you're a spice nut/spice adverse they can tweak the spice factor for you. (Crank it up baby! Feel the burn!)
They have excellent mai tais and similar tropical drinks which may have you poking the koi in the head on the way out the door. (Who? Me?! Never!)
It's a small place so arrive a little early or call ahead to make a reservation.Listed in: The Good, the Bad, and the…

I like to think that I am a Thai food conisseur. I spent much of my weekends in Boston, waiting in Big Dig traffic, salivating for the best pad-thai and green curry I could find. One day I met my match. I thought I had assembled a clear list of favorites, until my friend pointed out that I was the missing the obvious best Thai restaurant in Boston - Brown Sugar.
I was not let down. Brown Sugar is da bomb. Their dishes are exceptional and their Pad Thai - divine. The flavor in all of Brown Sugar's dishes is on point and unparalled in any of the many (and I mean MANY) Thai restaurants I have visited in Boston. I rarely head over to the Fenway area; but would do so again in a heartbeat - just for a taste of some Suga.' Oh so sweet!Listed in: Places and Businesses that I…

The drunken noodles here are unlike anything I've had at other Thai restaurants. Despite no dark brown soy sauce concoction, the noodles and chicken were flavorful and spicy. It was surprisingly light and refreshing.
A gigantic menu with all sorts of interesting choices. My sister had her dish served inside of a half pineapple! Bonus points for brown sugar shakers at every table. -

It was very hard for me to walk by all the Fenway sausage vendors and not stop, but it was absolutely worth it! The atmosphere feels young and fun, but with an elegant, simple decor. The waitresses did everything to help- checking in with us to give us their recommendations based on what we said we enjoyed.
The scallion pancakes are thin, crispy and scrumptious without leaving you with the feeling that your stomach is lined with oil. My drunken noodle was spicy and delicious - some of the best I've had - and I order it at some of my favorite Thai restaurants. My bf's cashew chicken was stuffed in a hollowed out pineapple half was fun as it was tasty (when I could steal a bite or two from him).
Enjoy! -

Best Thai I've ever had....I need to get back there again soon.
When you order something "hot" you sure as hell get it. I have NEVER ordered anything here that was remotely mediocre in flavor or quality. No lie.
The golden triangle and fresh rolls to start were on point. The appetizer portion are a little on the smaller side, so when I was finished I found out however, my stomach was not. I ended up ordering the Blue Lagoon and was satified immensely with the quality of crab.
My only cons about this location, is that the parking is terrible. And no, certainly not the typical-Boston-parking-fiasco. I'm talking about a very small street, residental parking, and if you do find a spot it most likely belongs to someone and they WILL tow your vehicle. That made me pretty livid, but of course in no way deters me from eating here.Listed in: Little Piggy's Eating…

I really enjoyed this place. I order the sweet-and-sour chicken and it was wonderful. Everyone's plates looked great. The menu had a wide range of options, so no matter who you are, you can pretty much find something you like.
The best part about the meal was the fried ice cream we had at the end. I'm dying to go back here just to get the fried ice cream again! Its worth the extra splurge. -

When I first saw Brown Sugar, I thought it might be a country kitchen. When my friend and I stopped by after spending the whole morning moving into a new apartment, we were pleasantly surprised to find a gem of a Thai restaurant on our block.
Try the Country Style Pad Thai. Just spicy enough to get your blood flowing. Oh! And be warned: avoid the patio on game nights. We were accosted by drunken Sox fans returning from Fenway Park. -
Review from Kristina M.
I somehow expected better. This is a cute little place with excellent service, and the food is good, but it somehow seems a little too westernized and not quite authentic. I had a noodle dish with Tofu, vegetables, Thai basil and some kind of tomato sauce. While it was very hot and spicy, the tomato sauce was at the same time slightly reminiscent of Italian pasta sauce, and overall the dish just did not leave me with a very happy feeling.
I would come back if I lived around here, but I was not overly impressed.Listed in: Veggie Boston

I made it here with Liz and Chloe....
Who? Liz and Chloe.
What? Liz and Chloe.
Okay no more name-dropping
We arrived here after we found out it was actually close to THAT other 7eleven (yes inside joke) our party of 7 was promptly seated, went through the menu and I decided to go with the safest option Pad Thai served chicken and shrimp, rice noodles stir-fried with egg, scallions, bean spouts and ground peanuts and I was VERY pleased with it, good taste and for a drink I picked a limeade.
I just wish I would've taken a picture of Liz's knuckles after the squirting incident, I think it took her about 3 minutes to wipe them off. Thanks to Chloe for taking a gentle bit off of her crab rangoon and not making me the next victim.
Good food, good prices and good service, make sure to check it out, and no open bar here so if you want to drink you have to eat. -

The prices are cheap, the food is outstanding, what's not to like?
I love thai food, and have eaten at dozens of places, and Brown Sugar definitely enters the top four. The panang curry and the pad thai are both amazing, and there are a lot of great vegetarian options. The servers were excellent, even going so far as to run out and stop someone from towing our car. The dining room is small and intimate. Everything is reasonably priced.
My only hesitations would be the lack of parking and the 1/2 mile walk from either the D or E green line T. If you don't mind either, then it's totally worth the inconvenience. -

I. Love. Brown. Sugar.
I have yet to have a pad thai that rivals theirs, and I've sampled all over Boston, New York, Philly and Chicago (side note: have you ever noticed pad thai is different colors in different cities? Curious...) I have friends from these respective cities who say they want to come back to Boston specifically for their pad thai. I also love their thai spring rolls, pineapple fried rice, jade noodles, and the last couple times I've been there they've brought out dishes that are on fire when they come to the table which, seriously, is fun for everybody =P I've never seen someone get a dish they didn't enjoy. Portions are big, prices are reasonable, service is fast and friendly.
PS Be careful when you're looking up their website, make sure you add 'cafe' to the brown sugar, or else you'll be directed to a site that's, let's say, not safe for work... ;)Listed in: Shippin up to Boston

I always liked Brown Sugar, though it wasn't my absolute favorite Thai restaurant in the history of Thai restaurants. Lots of people rave about it. It's a decent neighborhood option, but not really a "destination" restaurant.
WARNING TO VEGETARIANS:
Brown Sugar uses chicken broth in their veggie dishes. A vegetarian friend of mine discovered this after eating there for a good fifteen years. He wasn't very happy. -
Review from Meg K.
Jamaica Plain, MA
I really try to get something other than pad thai. But with it's fresh lime-y flavor with crushed peanuts, I just can't. It's so different from the heavy, oily pad thai that most restaurants serve that I don't get this dish anywhere else.
The service is always good, and if you ask them to reduce the oil they actually do. Tables are packed into both the fenway and Comm Ave locations, you practically sit at the same table your neighbor. I recommend staying away during a dinner rush for this reason, and you can also wind up with a long wait, especially if you are waiting for more than a 2-top. But do go, get take-out or lunch, and feast on the best (and most reasonably priced) thai food in Boston! -

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Boston. It is near the MFA and I try to go there when I stop by the MFA, because otherwise it is a little out of the way.
The restaurant exterior is a little quaint and unassuming.
I went in one day for lunch. I had the Jade Noodles. Wow, they were quite delicious. It just tasted great! -
Review from Doris K.
We usually come to Brown Sugar to celebrate office birthdays or for going away parties. Everyone always gets the mango curry and swears by it but I'm not a big fan of mixing salty and sweet. Ex: I hate chocolate covered pretzels. Brown Sugar has a pretty solid Thai menu with varying degrees of spicy so you can customize every order. I usually get one of their noodle dishes (pad thai and #52) and they have also been very good. I love their Thai tea but then again it's hard to screw up.
Lunchtime gets pretty busy so if you are planning to go in a big group, make a reservation. -
Review from Wei W.
I went here with a few girlfriends awhile ago and forgot how good the food was. Oh, and the prices are incredibly reasonable, especially for a place in the Fenway area. They have two parking spots that they own in back of the restaurant (but it's kinda sketchy to park there at night, despite being enclosed).
Brown Sugar is one of the better places (I think) for Thai food - their portions are huge, their food is delicious, and it's always a great experience. I love their fried rice dishes, and you can never go wrong with pad Thai. They also have options for vegetarians and vegans, and they'll go out of their way to accommodate your food needs. It does get busy there, and sometimes the waitresses are too busy bussing other tables to realize that you need your check, but other than that, the service is great. -
Review from May N.
Mmmm....I lurv me some Brown Sugar. I walked over a few weeks ago with a friend on a Wednesday evening after enjoying a pay-as-you-go MFA visit. It wasn't too busy early in the evening, but quickly filled up as we hung out.
The menu was long and full of delicious-sounding options. I was hungry and was quite indecisive because there were so many choices. My friend recommended the mango chicken curry while she got the pad thai country style. The mango dish was sweet and creamy with a little bit of heat. The pad thai was spicy with a kick. Maybe lime?
Prices are moderate, ~$10 - 25, service was efficient. I will have to return to try more entrees! -

Really good Thai food in an American-friendly setting. The decor is great, the food is better. You probably won't be able to get food as spicy as you would at Rod Dee and Dok Bua, but it will be just spicy enough to have some zing. My green curry was rich, thick, and flavorful, much better than that at Khao Sarn (a much worse American-friendly Thai restaurant). The tom yum soup was a tad bit sweet, but it still had plenty of profound flavor and even some surprising spiciness. Even the rice was much better than average.
Highly recommended to anyone--from Thai newbies to aficionados. -

Fantastic Saturday Lunch location - you can get the same items on the dinner menu for lunch menu prices. I had the green curry with shimp twice and have definitely sampled from my date's plate both times (all three entrees I tried were delectable).
Service was nothing special, but as an ex-server, I might be a little more picky than your average Bostonian.
Make sure you save room for the fried ice cream, it's an interesting juxtaposition of . . . well fried stuff and ice cream.
As for how Thai this Thai restaurant is, I wouldn't be able to venture a guess on that one. All I know is the the ingredients were fresh, everything was cooked to perfection, and it was tasty as hell. Easily one of my favorite places to eat in Boston. -

Cambridge, MA
For some reason, right after I moved to Boston, I went to a lot of Thai restaurants in the area (including much of Eastern Mass.)
After a year, I found Brown Sugar and I haven't been to another Thai place in Boston. Brown Sugar is Thai food the way it's meant to be. And Thai food is meant to be crazy delicious.
Two winning points about Brown Sugar that set it apart from other Thai places:
1. Best scallion pancakes in Boston.
2. The food is in no way Americanized. For example, if you order something spicy, they don't ask how spicy. They just go ahead and make it spicy, the way it is meant to be.
Of course, they are totally flexible if you want to customize your dish as well.
Vegan side note: if you decide to get the Basil Tofu (which I highly recommend) be sure to ask for soy sauce instead of fish sauce. -

I hate to rain on this love-in for Brown Sugar Cafe, but I was not all that impressed. I have only been once, and will likely try it again to see if my experience was a fluke. Yelpers seem to love it and I ran the name by some of my friends and they all raved about it.
I went with two other people, who each ordered identical soups and entrees (thanks, guys). They had the cucumber drop soup and were a little confused. As Amanda said "everything is big in this soup" and "it seems like the vegetables they chopped for last night." It was very strange because there were a couple huge pieces of vegetables and a huge piece of chewy seaweed. I actually quite liked my Tom Khar Gai, which is coconut based with pieces of chicken.
For entrees, they had some sort of green pasta with shrimp and vegetables and I had a stir-fry with tofu. It was all fine, but we agreed that the flavors were just not that exciting. We were all surprised at the lack of any spiciness, granted none of the dishes was labeled as spicy.
And to finish up...let's just say none of us felt very well after dinner. Not a good end to the evening. -

One of my absolute favorite places to eat in Boston!
I LOVE BROWN SUGAR.
1- the menu had literally 100s of options on it.
2- the staff are all so pleasant and friendly
3- the atmosphere is fine...nothing to die for, but not terrible
4- they deliver and are fairly prompt...also the food arrives PIPING HOT (bonus)
5- the large fish inside the front door is still there after 2 years (hasn't ended up in my Mango Fried Rice yet....big plus)
I have this friend who has a lovely Greek family who comes to visit her a good bit. I kid you not when I say that EVERY TIME they come to visit they go to Brown Sugar. Her dear mother tells everyone in Amish Country, PA about how amazing this food is. If Greeks don't know their food, I don't know who does....so, her review is review enough!!
I have never had a bad meal there nor has any of my friends...so order whatever you would like! Also, I went for lunch and it's a bit smaller of a menu, cheaper, and the portions are smaller...so it's a nice option for lunch!
oh...and p.s. the dinners are usually 2 dinners for me. Love me some leftovers! -
Review from Angela F.
Food: This is one of the best Thai food restaurants I have ever been to. The food is spectacular and everything I've ordered here has kept me coming back for more! There are so many choices on the menu that it's hard to choose what to eat here. Since every dish is so delicious here, I'm sure you can choose anything on this menu and you will not be disappointed. My favorite dishes are Brown Sugar Mango Curry and Thai Fried Rice (comes in half of a real pineapple). I've been to many different Thai restaurants but this is definitely one of my favorites.
Price: Reasonable. Dinner entrees on average range from $9 to $15 each. Lunch entrees on average range from $8 to $10.
Service: The service is great also. One time, I made a reservation and was 10 minutes late (my fault), so they gave away my reservation. However, the hostess kept apologizing, gave us the next available table, and ended up giving us a free appetizer because we had to wait since they gave our table away (the wait was only 10-15 minutes). Then, the waitress brought our food out 5 minutes after we ordered because they felt bad for making us wait the extra 10-15 minutes. Of course, we ended up having to tip her more since she was so accommodating.
Wait: My only complaint would be the wait time (usually not too bad...about 10-15 minutes). This restaurant is fairly busy during dinner time though and the wait could be longer. Make reservations or come early. It's worth it though! -

Another lover of Brown Sugar. I used to work nearby and the best days were when I would go to Brown Sugar during lunch and pick up some food. Once I ordered food for some students and thereby became their favorite teacher. jk
Anyway, I realize that I've never eaten in the restaurant, but it looks cute and cozy for a small group or a date. I haven't had a disappointing meal from Brown Sugar yet. And for the dorkiest thing ever: I love the takeout bags. They make me feel classy. -

This is my favorite thai place, although if i just want some quick, cheap take out I go to Roo-dee on Peterborough st.
Brown Sugar is more of a sit down retaurant, with large portions. Try their specials, espcially the various spicey combos of seafood and meat.
