Brown Dog Deli & Wine Bar isn't just one of the best places to dine in Lake Placid - in my opinion, it's one of the best spots (in its price point) to grab a meal in the whole Adirondack region. The food may not be on par with what you'd expect from a similar place in a big city, but you won't get these views in any big city I know of. I took a girlfriend who was visiting from Australia to Brown Dog for lunch last week and couldn't have chosen a better spot to introduce her to the region.
We arrived around 1:30 for lunch and every seat in the house was taken - a great sign! Luckily the first table to open up was on the quaint patio in the back of the restaurant. Brown Dog's main dining area is really quite lovely, with warm colors and wooden floors and a sandwich bar and a wine bar. But the back porch is the spot where you want to be, especially if the weather is as nice as it was when I was there. We had a gorgeous view of Mirror Lake and I love how they decorated the porch with chandeliers and burlap sacks puffed along the ceilings. Soothing jazz was piped outside. Perfect.
Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the extensive wine list, which includes many options available in both 3 and 6 ounce pours. I really liked the food menu, too. Lots of local ingredients. The front page listed a number of appealing-sounding gourmet sandwiches costing around $15, and the middle page has the more reasonable $8ish options. We were on vacation so we figured why not go for broke. I ordered the lobster club sandwich: big hunks of lobster, strips of bacon, avocado, and lemon olive oil aioli on a brioche bun ($17.95). My girlfriend had an open-faced bison rib eye sandwich with caramelized Vidalia onions and tomato-laced bernaise. The sandwiches were both excellent, but I was a tad disappointed by a few details. The arugula that came with the sandwiches was sad and wilted, and my girlfriend's bison steak had a lot of fat running throughout. Plus, the fresh-cut rosemary fries had tons of potential but they were cold by the time they reached our table.
All-in-all I'd recommend Brown Dog without hesitation to anyone visiting Lake Placid. Hold out for a seat on the back patio! -

We ate here on New Years Day and were so disappointed. This restaurant pretends to be something it isn't. The food just doesn't deliver. This is really a place for tourists who don't know or care about good food. Our dishes lacked flavor. The vegetables were uninspired and undercooked. The mac 'n' cheese was penne not macaroni and promised shaved black truffle but used truffle oil instead. We love Lake Placid but we would never choose this restaurant again.

It was a snowy, wintery day...
(I have a feeling all stories in Lake Placid might start out this way)
A couple days before Christmas, my friend and I made our way down the main strip of Lake Placid in search of a decent place to get lunch. My friend is hard to please. I'm possibly harder to please, so no steakhouses and no greasy spoons, preferably something with a view, because I don't get to Lake Placid often (or, ever), so I want my damn view of mountains, a lake, a ski slope or something.
We came upon Brown Dog Deli & Wine Bar and thought BINGO ("there was a farmer, had a dog..."oh I did NOT just go there, did I?) We saw the menu is comprised of creative sandwiches and dishes and hello, wine! Plus a quick peek revealed a glorious picture window in the back. In!
Needless to say, you've hit the jackpot if you get a seat by the aforementioned picture window. Even if you don't sit right at the window, any seat towards the back affords a view. Our hostess thoughtfully sat us right next to the bathroom. Sigh. I forgive her because it was busy and at least we *did* have that amazing view (of the snowy lake, that is. We just ignored the bathroom).
One thing I noticed in the restaurant was the overpowering scent of lilies. I love the smell normally, but in a wine bar, not so much. The smell was invasive and at times interfered with the food and wine.
The vegetable sandwich I ordered was tasty and acceptable. The bag of Lays chips that came on the side was not. I mean, this isn't Katz's fucking deli or the school cafeteria. It just totally cheapens the rest of the plate to have that yellow bag on there, a most tacky garnish. Not surprisingly, they have a very thorough wine list and impressive amount of choices by the glass. We indulged. What did you expect?
Overall, I do recommend Brown Dog, especially for a glass of wine and a serene spot to enjoy the view.Listed in: New York, New Yorrrrrk...State

The Brown Dog is a small, Lake Placid restaurant that plates interesting offerings that are a combination of fine dining and comfort food with a great wine list by the glass to match each dish. The food was good.
The only problem came with the service. It is slow, which isn't necessarily bad, it gives you time to relax, sip your wine and see who is sharing the place with you plus you can listen to what is going on....like hearing your waitress yell your dessert (that she pushed as an incredibly delicious special) order into the kitchen "Do we have any of the apple tarts you made yesterday left?" Thankfully, they had run out. We passed on the remaining choices. -

Really good food. We went there for lunch. I got a wild mushroom and lavender soup and my husband got the lobster bisque. The mushroom soup was fabulous. I have collected my own wild mushrooms before and the kitchen did an excellent job of catching the flavor. Also, the lavender was such a great touch, you could really taste the herb infused into the broth. It was one of the best soups I have ever had. The bisque was great as well but there were little pieces of shell that needed to be picked out. We also ordered a chicken goat cheese salad. The creamy cheese, pecan clusters, and cranberries were great. However, ther could have been more flavor in the chicken. But the flavor of the rest of the salad made up for it. I would definately recommend this place.

Not kid friendly. Couldn't care less about families with kids. They haven't changed since last year. It's their choice of course, but a big FU to the Brown Dog and their mysanthropic, couldn't give a sh** wait staff..

PHENOMENAL! I highly suggest the "tasting" menu on Saturday nights - 5 courses total including a main meal. You can get this with and without wine pairings.
This is a very intimate setting - they only have about 9-12 tables (though I'm sure they can accommodate a larger group too).
Service was excellent and you can tell they put a lot of thought into everything they do here. -

Bottom line is - the back patio view is breath-taking. I would strongly suggest making reservations for dinner, not so much lunch. We ate dinner here on the back patio on a Wednesday night and it was an all-around great dining experience. The waitress was uber friendly and helpful in selecting appetizers, entrees and an accompanying wine.We ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon appetizer and a salad. For entree, I opted for another appetizer selection of the giant prawn with lemon risotto - light, refreshing and filling. My boyfriend ordered the steak and it was cooked perfectly medium rare as requested. My mom ordered the goat cheese duck quesadilla, it was a very unique combo of ingredients but it all paired well together. For dessert, we shared the creme brulee (ehh, it was aright). All together it was a great evening dining al fresco taking in the beautiful sunset over the glistening lake.
*Just a cute little tidbit - they deliver your check in a empty cigar box, it which you are encouraged to write a little note to the establishment. -

This is the best restaurant for dinner in the Lake placid area by a country mile. I had dinner here with my mom and dad, and it was some of the best food I have ever put in my mouth. However, if you want to eat good here, prepare to visit the ATM.
My dad and I had the veal chop. It's off the tasting menu, but you can order anything from that section. Funny thing about that tasting menu, there are no prices listed. After looking at the bill, I knew why. Those chops were VERY expensive for VERY expensive. But they were absolutely delicious, so I don't complain. However, I would much more highly recommend the swordfish with white truffle polenta, which my mom had. It's less expensive and (I think) better.
Beyond that, the service was very good. Our waitress (Chelsea?) had impeccable timing, and did very little to interrupt the dining experience.
The restaurant itself was very calm and quiet. No hustle and bustle with only 3 waitstaff and 9-12 tables. The restaurant had a very nice ambiance, which was never broken and it made the meal very pleasant. -

Really good wine list, delicious sandwiches and the ladies behind the counter really nice. I saw a few Tokaji's on their wine list which instantly bumps you up in my book.

This July 4th we went camping on Lake Harris (we are from NYC) and visited Lake Placid for the day.
I was with 2 other girlfriends and 2 small dogs. We were able to sit outside and have drinks but the kitchen was closed (we came in between lunch and dinner set).
Our waitress was new and did not know how to handle our table. We are all 30-31. We ordered our drinks but
one person in our party did not have her wallet. The waitress said she would check if she can still bring up her drink order. After a few minutes, the waitress came back asking us a 2nd time about our drink order; she said she "...forgot what it was." She completely ignored our friend who didn't have an ID. We had to ask the waitress if she could still get a drink to which we received, "Oh, uhm, no. Can I get you a lemonade or ice tea?" We found it extremely rude that she came over and ignored our sans-wallet friend. When we finally got our drinks, she brought over a Melini red wine instead of the bellini that I orderd (twice now). While waiting for my correct drink, we were all sharing tastes of the wine at our table. The manager came outside and TOOK THE GLASS OUT of my friend's hand. She rudely said, "Since you don't have ID you cannot drink this." We were flabbergasted. I do believe there were more polite ways to handle this situation.
The waitress brought us the check before we asked and kept the incorrect drink on the tab.
I am highly disappointed at the service and will never return back. -

A few of us hockey dads went there last weekend when the Cottage at Mirror Lake had too long of a wait. Great find. This place had a cool view, great relaxed atmosphere, a waitress with an attitude (in a good and fun way) and no wait to get seated...perfect start. The lunch choices were excellent. I had a nice grilled chicken on sour dough. Wish I had a chance to go back and have dinner...looked like a nice wine list.

I rarely make a point of writing reviews but our experience here was so sub-par that I feel compelled to write this. Other diners have recommended this place for lunch and that may be a decent option, but for dinner the menu is extremely limited and overpriced, and our wait-person was so pretentious I almost couldn't keep from laughing. First we were chided for not making a reservation, even though there were plenty of empty tables. There's a blackboard listing lots of salads but that's for "lunch only" - for dinner you can't get anything a simple as a nice salad or a side dish - you have to order a heavy, rich, overly complicated entree. The 'lite' menu options are really just an excuse to put less food on the plate for still a lot of money (two tiny crab cakes for $16), but it's not light in calories. The biggest insult was to be offered a choice of still or sparkling water, then the waitress opened and poured another bottle without asking if we wanted it, and then charged us $15... for 2 lousy bottles of water! Go elsewhere if you don't want to feel ripped off...
