    When I walked in:
-I was greeted warmly by the ladies behind the counter.
-There were plenty of cute little places to sit.
-Hot guy was seated typing away on his computer.

What my friend and I ordered:
-Breakfast sandwich with bacon = scrumptious
    -Coffee = standard coffee
-Salmon sandwich = looked really good. My friend didn't offer me any of her sandwich, I'm guessing it was so good it couldn't be shared.
-Mango Smoothie = same as the salmon sandwich.

Every single person that walked through the door was greeted warmly by the ladies behind the counter. They were both so friendly that I can't wait until the next day I have off so I can stop by and have my morning meal here. =)

I was in the mood of exploring Oakland again and I should say that I wish this cafe exist when I live in Oakland as a college student 11 years ago.

It is a hip cafe to hang out by yourself or with one or two other people. They 4 seating table indoor, couple chair at the bars and 2 outdoor seating.

I have not try their food but i will probably comeback again..

I've been perfectly content living in the city of San Francisco, right by Golden Gate Park, for months. What else could I ask for? Nature nearby, shopping around the corner, bars in the vicinity, and the list goes on. But then I had to come here, and I'm halfway-serious-halfway-not about moving to Oakland, right around the corner from this little gem. I just love it so much.

I spent a couple of hours here the other afternoon, and it was blissful. I had looked at reviews beforehand and discovered the owner's name was Theresa (points for an awesome name!). She warmly greeted me when I walked in, and one of the guys behind the counter got me a tasty hot chocolate.

The interior is absolutely wonderful. Lots of comfy couches to sit on, even though the space is definitely tight. Art on the walls...tunes in the background...oh! and there's free wi-fi. It's such a great spot to chill and relax, get some work done, people-watch, or whatever else you could imagine. I was really happy to hang out here.

I cannot wait to return! Or move in next door.

It's a cozy, funky, hippy/alternative kind of place.  I like the vibe and the food and coffee are good for the price.  Plus, sidewalk tables (if dirty) are still a good thing.

The main reason I go back to to be greeted and taken care of by the older woman who works there (the owner perhaps?).  She totally understands hospitality; smiling, positive, helpful, engaged and thanks me for coming.

The rest of the staff are very hit and miss.  Like a few other reviews on here, I've had to wait at the counter a long time with out being acknowledged, interaction is minimal, sometimes even sullen and rarely a thank you or good bye.

I hope her influence rubs off a little more.  I'll still go back.

I felt almost too welcome in this amazing sandwich joint! Wonderful staff and DELICIOUS food. I enjoyed the Spicy Cowgirl wrap! It was so big, I had to take half with me and they wrapped it up in foil for me! Such awesome service. Though it's not on my usual route, I will go out of my way to visit again, soon! YUM!

    Wrap heaven!

The hub is always nagging me to join him for lunch so I thought I would make his day and grace him with my presence. I was feeling like a fatty and wanted to try the huge wraps that I have been drooling over on the yelp pics. Here I come Brown Couch!

Weekday lunch time around 12:15PM. Just a couple of blocks from 12TH St. Bart. Why bother with parking when it's such a nice day and accessible by public transportation.

Upon walking in you are greeted by colorful art on the walls, casual seating and a huge menu board. I think I still have a cramp in my neck from staring up too long. Everything sounded wonderful sandwiches, wraps, salads and smoothies. It was difficult to make up my mind.

After much thought I ordered the Southwestern BBQ chicken wheat wrap.

We found a table and took in the view of the art. Before I knew it our food was being brought over by the owner. She was very sweet and told us to enjoy our lunch. She doesn't have to tell me twice I was ready! I looked down at the brown plastic tray and saw a huge wrap I swear it was the size of a 1 month old baby.

The wrap was delicious. Fresh ingredients and just enough sauce so it wasn't over bearing and not dry. The hub asked to trade halves (he knew mine looked good) so I thought I would be a nice wife and grant him his wish. So I tried his half the Spicy Thai on spinach wrap. It was good. I liked mine a little more but the spinach wrap had a better taste compared to the wheat.

Prices are reasonable for the ingredients, portion and service for $6.75 each.

The staff was very nice and I liked hearing the owner greet her regulars by name. You can see that she really enjoys what she does and her store.

When in the mood for a casual meal check this place out.

There are people whose presence on Earth makes living a little easier and days a bit brighter.  One of those people is Theresa, the owner of the Brown Couch Cafe.  She is a woman who possesses that rare kind of electricity that unifies people, creates harmony, and energizes the soul. No matter who you are or what your story is, the Brown Couch is the closest you'll ever feel to a safe and cozy home in a cafe.  This place radiates with a palpable positive aura, and everyone working here speaks the language of casual kindness.

I truly believe food holds energy inside it, and a thoughtful meal is one of the greatest expressions of love you can show someone.  If from time to time everyone had a Brown Couch Cafe experience with Theresa and staff, one in which joy and caring can be tasted, the world would be a little better for it.

I am not a hipster, but totally converted for my brief time here.

Art covering the wall - stuff I could do, but wouldn't waste the paint.   Good word for atmosphere might be "Casually eclectic".  I did like the random seating.

The Spicy Thai Chicken Wrap was great.  Heavy on the lettuce, but I enjoyed the fresh crunch with each bite.  Shared half of Amber's BBQ Chicken wrap and it was also excellent.  Same style of lettuce with a crunch, and a saucy bit of chicken with every bite.

The Mango smoothie was extremely tempting, but I can save that for another trip.  The owner and staff were both very pleasant, and you can tell they love their job, or at least show a kind respect for everyone that comes in.

A bit less than $15 for two generously sized wraps.  Not bad.

This is my downtown hang out.

Reasons why I love this place (and I've only been here three times so far--but three times in the past week):

+The people who work here. Super nice and might I add, good-looking. They've always been cool with my dumb customer questions about what they make their chai/hot chocolate out of, what's the best smoothie, etc. They also offer extra service that's not on the menu. Right now I'm currently sipping on the last of my very yummy Berry Mint smoothie. Hopefully soon to be on the menu. One server also made me a chai latte the way he thinks is best (not the premade stuff, which I ordered in my first visit and was too sweet for me)--and it was good.  I also watched them patiently and respectfully communicate with a Chinese woman whose English was very, very limited over an order of bagels that she didn't understand. That gets infinite stars in my mind.

+The atmosphere here is cozy and laidback. It's a small space but there's always a seat available. Perhaps I've gotten lucky, but I don't mind. It looks like the art rotates, which means they probably support local artists. Not surprised. The patrons are a nice mix of people who are students and professionals, on laptops, or actually meeting to chat with each other *gasp* or stopping by for a quick drink/bite. Not the trendy types. I've spent a good three hours here and not felt pressured to leave. It seems like there are quite a few regulars who know the people who work here by name and are known by their names. Good light with different spots that don't get as much sun if you don't want it. Outdoor seating. Good music and overall the sound level is not too loud to have a conversation with another person or on the phone.

+Location is in downtown but not in the crazy and heavy-traffic part of town. Read, a bit calmer but still active energy and less crazies wandering in.

+Free wifi. Outlets could be more accessible but I've never stayed long enough to need them.

+I've heard the food is pretty good here. I can't wait to try it out myself.

Been here twice now - once to eat in, once to-go - and I like it. The food is good, the prices are decent, and the service is not bad. It's a cute place I could hang out in for an hour or two, in the middle of a blah neighborhood.

The downsides: I would love it if they got a website. Seems like in this day and age, that would be a pretty obvious thing. I want to be able to look at the menu, call in an order and just pick it up (instead of ordering when I get there and then waiting -- lunch break is short and it took a long time to get my to-go order ready.) Could have solved this problem last time I was there by picking up a to-go menu, but they were out...

This place is really special. Theresa, the owner, goes out of her way to really *know*  her customers. If you come in more than three times in a month she WILL know your name. Incredible. This kind of service and attention to detail has also spread to her employees, who are excellent.

The espresso drinks are okay. Their sandwiches are very good. The mango smoothie is awesome. The most important thing about this place is the people and the atmosphere of kindness they've cultivated.

I stumbled into this place today by accident.  The space used to be a health food cafe run by a Korean woman who made the most delicious marinated tofu.  I was sad to see she was gone, but am happy to have found this place.

Like other reviewers noted, the staff are super nice.  I had the panini with brie, apple and spinach - SUPER yummy!  I am craving another one right now.  Can't wait to try other things on the menu, like the wraps. I saw a couple of people eating salads that just looked DELISH!  Can't wait to try those, too.

The decor is a little funky but so what . . . down to the large brown velvet couch :-)

I'm setting up a meeting with a funder in a downtown Oakland cafe - this will be my new spot!

4.5 Stars? It's crap like this that makes Yelp seem less and less relevant.

Okay I hate to do this, but honestly most of these reviewers sound like they're rating with their hearts instead of their mouths.

I've gone to BCC twice now, ordered two diff. wraps, and both times came away with the exact same impression - their wraps are 90% tortilla and lettuce, and 10% meat and other stuffings.

That is an unacceptable ratio of filler-to-meat. If this were a Mexican joint you would throw the burrito back at the cook for giving you 90% rice. What makes it worse is that the wraps are so oversized that you think "OMG there's no way I can finish that" - and you're right, because by the time you've finished eating the meaty portions, you're still left with about half a wrap's worth of tortilla and lettuce.

If you are a man  you will come away feeling unsatisfied and probably angry that you just spent $7 on a salad-disguised-as-a-wrap.

The owner is a sweet lady, which is why I genuinely hope she reads this and does something about her wraps.

I spent a couple weeks searching for apartments in the Lake Merritt area and needed a place I could browse the web and have some coffee. I took the advice of my fellow yelpers and gave Brown Couch a shot. The staff there was friendly and helpful, I mentioned that was starving and they recommended the falafel wrap. It was massive and kept me full for eight whopping hours. I will certainly keep coming back.

Hey, it's no coincidence this place is called Brown Couch Cafe because sure enough, there is a big brown couch that pretty much provides most of the seating in this compact space. Apparently, it came with the place where he couch was moved from a women's home where owner Theresa Acree has played with her grandchildren. That's a great story of how she probably saw the couch as a sign that she should take her savings and open a deli cafe in downtown Oakland. I definitely wish her all the luck in the world.

The house specialties are the wraps with a few paninis and smoothies thrown in for good measure. Advance word was so good that I decided to come here on the way back from the dentist. I ordered the $7.75 Mama Za Za, a robust wrap with grilled teriyaki chicken, bacon, greens, arugula, tomatoes, onion, scallions and cilantro mayo (see photo). It tasted quite fresh with the bacon and chicken just the right amount to give it some heft and crispiness. The only drawback is that it's obviously popular with the regulars who stay parked in the more comfortable chairs, which leaves the rest of us either taking it to go or eating it outside.

FOOD - 4 stars...a healthy wrap in the mouth bursting with flavor
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...cute, Berkeley-style place, just hope Theresa can afford to expand
    SERVICE - 4 stars...friendly and efficient
TOTAL - 4 stars...Theresa's place rocks in a neighborhood that does anything but roll

It's a Saturday morning and the cafes in downtown Oakland are closed so when you spot the Brown Couch Cafe, a little ray of hope springs up in your heart.  The cafe is near a corner with outdoor seating and it appears to be bustling.

Inside, there are people bent over books and computers, people chatting and people standing at the counter waiting for their orders.  When you enter, 5 people look at you and take you in then go back to what they are doing.  2 of the 5 people work there.  They don't acknowledge your existence.  They're communicating with other customers and busy.  You stand near the counter and wait a few minutes.  You still don't exist.

It's a beautiful day, too beautiful to stand, invisible, inside some downtown cafe so you continue on over to glistening Lake  Merritt to the Grand Lake Coffee House at Grand Avenue and Bellevue.  There, you get your hot drink and a pastry while chatting with the friendly person behind the counter.   While sitting at a table outside the cafe soaking in the view of the Lake in the distance and the parade of people enjoying the beautiful day, you wink at serendipity and settle back into the comfort of familiarity.

That night, you check out the Brown Couch Cafe on Yelp and are surprised to see that people rave about the place, five stars everywhere.  It must have been bad timing.  The place deserves another chance.  Yelp lists the place open 9 - 5 on Sundays so you head back over at 10am on Sunday.  It's closed.

I met a friend here for lunch today who is a frequent customer.  The atmosphere is very laid back, and the artwork is great.  The menu options are wonderful and the food tastes great.

My only reservation is with the staff's attention to cleanliness.  In the 40 minutes I was there, I witnessed one worker put his hands in his mouth several times (to help open a plastic bag, after some food fell on his fingers, etc.). But yes, even after seeing the offending licking I continued to enjoy my Thai Chicken Wrap (so big I could only eat half; took the other half home for dinner tonight).  My rationale being that that guy was not the one making my food. -- I hope!  So far I'm not feeling the effects of any cross-contamination.

I hope this is not the norm for all staff, but some reminders to staff about about cleanliness and hygene are in order -- perhaps the use of food safe gloves might help?

That incident is my only hesitation about returning. The food was very good and this place is definitely a neighborhood gem.

This is a pure coffee review. It looked like they had a lot of good stuff on the menu and look back slightly sad I didn't try anything.

In town and completely unfamiliar with the area, a friend recommended I stop for coffee at this cafe. I ordered a hot mocha, needing the sugar and caffeine to help perk me up. Since I was enjoying my coffee at the cafe, I got it in a huge mug that was thick ceramic, which made it easy to hold on to the hot coffee. I wanted to love this coffee. Few things are better than when you go to a random cafe/coffee shop and have the most amazing cup of coffee of your life. But it wasn't anything great. :(

I liked the comfortable feel in the cafe and how they have local artists work on sale.

They get an extra star for having almond milk as a substitute. :D

I went from Meh I've experienced better to A-OK because of the service.

Super Friendly Service, Great Location, Cute Café (small but a great place to grab stuff to go).

I only tried the Coconut Smoothie but the Sandwiches look amazing and I love that they have a Vegan Chicken Salad here. Expensive smoothies/Juices compared to what you get at other places I probably would skip that next time. I will probably be back to try some food though.

I'd love to see their awesome little café rounded out with their delicious smoothies much thicker (mine was the consistency of milk) little cheaper  for what you get and biodegradable cups instead of plastic.

Some of my girlfriends really wanted to come to this place so I met them there for lunch.  The service is pretty friendly and the owner is amazingly nice.  She would probably be the only reason I'd come back.

The wraps are pretty huge and a really stuffed with veggies.  The prices were reasonable, especially for the portions.  Wraps are around $7-9 and salads are $8-10?

I got a Thai Chicken wrap and at first I thought there just wasn't enough peanut sauce in it... but after nibbling on it at work, I realized that the chicken was complete unseasoned!  It was nice and moist but has absolutely NO FLAVOR.  Even when I put extra peanut sauce on it, everything else (lettuce, wrap part) was flavorful... but well, you HAVE to season chicken while you're cooking or else it's not going to take the flavor.  I asked my friends and they felt like their wraps could be more flavorful as well....

    That's just too bad.

Just left here, and I have two things to say (well, a lot more than two, but alas): 1) I'm in a total food coma and I only at half of my 14th Street wrap (and I went in starving) and 2) the owner is the NICEST restaurant owner ever - I'd probably go back even if the food wasn't amazing because of her (but, the food was AMAZING, so I've two reasons to go back).

I'm always excited when a place has several vegan options, which they do. I look forward to trying them all. My wrap today was super good, better than I can tell you - I look forward to eating it for dinner as well!

The owner greeted me immediately when I came in and gave me a big smile as she was bringing food to another table. She stopped to talk to me several times and always said "it's my pleasure" when I thanked her for something. You can't fake that kind of happiness, and it's infectious.

The staff was also super nice, and patient - which was good because with several vegan options it took me a while to decide.

I sat in a super comfy green sofa-chair, which I always appreciate.

It was just plain awesome. Love it, and will return regularly. I encourage you highly to try it out!

You could build a NICE robot army programmed to be NICE ONLY and they still wouldn't be QUITE AS NICE as the STAFF HERE. JESUS CHRIST, THEY ARE NICE.

The Yelapa wrap is one of the best egg thingys I've ever eaten.

Two and a half negatives (ALSO NAME OF NEW SHEEN PILOT):
    1) The coffee is sorta weak for me. If they added like 1/2 ounce more of grinds per pot-- may really help.
1.5) The dollar per cup refill is RIDICULOUS. (ALTHOUGH IF COFFEE TASTED BETTER I WOULDN'T MIND THE CHARGE AS MUCH)
    2) Some nutty lady with two rat dogs is a regular. GET HER OUTTA THEREEEE

I just don't get it, what is it about this vegan "chicken" salad that makes it taste soo good?!  Is it the sesame dressing?  Is it the veggie chicken?  I guess it's just a combination, but it's basically like vegan crack.  I mean this salad is pretty much the only salad that I would willingly pay $10 for..  Word of warning to the vegans, they typically serve the salads with bread and butter.  Neither the bread nor the butter are vegan.  Today I asked if they could replace it with something that is and they awesomely gave me a warm wrap cut up into pieces and with some herbs or something inside...yum!  I really don't know why they would serve items on the menu which are listed as vegan with non-vegan bread and butter...bizarre!  The owner is so cute, everytime I go here when I leave she says "thank you miss Celeste!" with a genuine big smile o n her face.

Anywho, the salad is amazing and I will be back!

Let me set the scene, it was a depressing morning with heavy on and off rain. I was having a crummy morning because of the residual crumminess from the night before, so I decided to trek to a nearby cafe for some solitude and comfort food to pull myself together.

I have never been this much affected emotionally by a cafe. It's a very intimate space with art hung all across the walls and arts and crafts products displayed for purchase from local artists. It made eating lunch alone, less lonesome because I had all these things to marvel at.

I ordered an apple Bree spinach pannini and a chai soy latte. I don't usually spend 13 bucks for lunch but I figured I deserved it today. It was just what I needed, especially when the owner came by and brought it to me with a huge smile and said "here you go Miss Jenny". Not in a, I'm calling you by your name because I want to make sure you ordered this and not  some other chick way, it was so personal and sweet. Maybe I'm over thinking?

It was difficult to find a seat, so I migrated from here to there until I got my food. I would suggest being patient, a seat opens up pretty quickly. I shared my table with a friendly guy and not before long, I melted into the massive comfortable soft and warm English chair with a plate of healing food and a delicious frothy chai latte in front of me.

Now I know where to go on days where I just need to feel better = ) I don't know if I would hold a serious business meeting here, but I would definitely see this as a nice place to bring companions to share intimate conversations and comforting food.

Thanks for making my day brighter.

Affordable, comfortable, huge portions, and great quality vegan meats as well as real ones.

All in all, a basic cafe, done right.

I really like this place.  A lot.  Sometimes I come here twice in one day (breakfast and lunch) or I'll order my lunch to go when I get my breakfast.  It's that good.

This is a great place for vegans because they have a couple different options - they even have a vegan breakfast sandwich, which I have found is a rarity.

The food is healthy, fresh and delicious.  What more could you want?

But there's more!  The employees and owner are super friendly and the art on the walls provides entertainment while you wait for your order.  And there are comfy couches and chairs.

I wish I knew if the coffee was Fair Trade or not.  Bonus points if it is!
