If you're in Cayucous and you don't stop here you're missing out.
These are some of the best cookies I've ever eaten. I love that they sell little cartons of milk and give you samples of pretty much every cookie. Don't miss the cocoa cookie or the honey cookie - both are phenomenal.
I can't decide if the fact that they're a little pricey is a bad thing or a good thing (because it keeps me from buying and eating WAY too many)... -

Is the cookie good? Yes
Is it $1-per piece good? No
I ate it very very slowly for me to justify the price. I didn't want to finish the whole (small) cookie just in a few seconds. Nice for once in a while treat when you are in the area; but I don't think I would buy again as I think I can find better cookies and cheaper nearby. -

Pricey cookies, but hey, it's a treat!
My DH fell in love with their cookies after we received a gift basket. I'm not the biggest butter cookie fan in general, but the cookie is good -- buttery, rich, nuanced with the brown butter and sea salt.
The ladies in this tiny shop were extremely friendly and open to any questions and sample requests. I love great service!
We ended up leaving with the originals, Bourbon, and some of their other non-butter cookies. I'd say skip the latter, load up on the namesake cookies and granola (delicious BTW with the candied ginger and coconut!). -

Due 2 lack of parking space, i had 2 only give it 4 stars... Other than that, this place has the best, melt in your mouth cookies on earth!!! Great, friendly customer service! Enjoyed watching the bakers roll the perfectly shaped cookie in2 a ball. Variety of cookies, i liked the $10 tower bag of cookies (my favorite wuz the peanut butter). Cute lil building in a cozy lil coastal town. Thank u food channel 4 discovering brown butter cookies!!! Good thing we cud order online since we live 4 hours away from this place. Yummy cookies!!!

My husband's boss ordered some of these cookies online with the hopes that I could crack their recipe. Well, I definitely WANTED to. After eating these little cookies, I was madly in love. I bake on a daily basis and have a huge sweet tooth but these are truly something else. The flavors are intense yet delicate at the same time (you definitely get browned butter and you definitely get sea salt in every bite) and the texture is just right right on - like a crispy snickerdoodle/shortbread combination. Anyways, I could go on and on about the cookies but what I really want to say is that the shop is just as cute as the packaging and hte cookies themselves. They give you bountiful samples and even gave me a hint to their recipe after I confessed my failure at replicating them.

Over hyped and under delivered.
I was excited to stop by this place on our last road trip up the coast. I had read about it in a magazine and seen all the good reviews on yelp.
This place was nothing like what I expected.
It felt like a tourist trap, not a local cookie company.
The staff wasn't very friendly, especially the one giving out the samples. It is clear they do NOT want you to try more than one or two samples. They just want you to taste one and then get out your money.
Completely overpriced for a very small cookie that is similar to a Girl Scout Cookie! ...... $1 a piece for that little cookie?!
I did very much like the taste of the original brown sugar sea salt cookie.
We ended up buying 12 for $12.00. ... altho they are very tasty... it still feels like a rip off.
If you are driving up the coast... I would skip this place and instead stop at Red Moose Cookie Company in Cambria.
Much better and much friendlier. -

Located right off Highway 1 in Cayucos, easy enough to get to. However, super pricey cookies- I think I spent $10 for a dozen or something like that. Sadly, I wasn't a fan of the brown butter/salty taste despite the rave reviews. But I would definitely recommend trying them once if you're in the area. The staff was VERY friendly and inviting, and they give you samples of almost all the flavors (still warm from the oven).

I freaking LOVE these cookies.
Super delicious, sweet and salty and just amazing. I haven't been to the actual location, but I have eaten enough cookies to be considered a regular by far.
Get your hands on them any way that you can.
They sell them at the Tyler Florence shop in Mill Valley. They are expensive, but I would pay twice as much for how delicious they are.
Oh, and I have tried all the flavors- all are good, but the original is by far the bestest. -

I had this place book marked since they were featured in the AAA magazine at the beginning of the year. This year, I had to visit because I've heard great things. You can sample before making a purchase.
My favorite was the cocoa cookie it was mixed was great perfectionist. The cookie is not like most cookie. Its a little flakey and crumbly. Taste good with a glass of milk or chocolate milk.
The shop is small inside so you can't sit inside. You can see the bakers rolling the dough and having a great time talking to one another.
Who would have thought the combination of sweet and salty! -

We were tricked. Lured here by that friendly gesture at Cass House of leaving you cookies from BBCC at your night stand. And it's 10 pm at night and you have one, and then another, and then you're trying to find a way to explain to your friend why they didn't get a cookie. Now it's 10:12 pm and you want more--you search high and low, wondering if perhaps they would give two bags of cookies and you just happened to drop one bag. And then it's 10:30 you throw on some clothes and run over to the store and wonder if maybe there's a night shift of elves making the cookies who are willing to share. And then you realize it opens at 10 am and you now have 11.5 hours before the store opens.
The cookies are amazing and the staff warm and welcoming. They were amused by my gasp of delight as I walked in the store at 10 am, and offered me every cookie they had to try. The humored me and my questions, and chatted along. Definitely loved the original and bourbon. Brought cookies back to my staff, and they swooned about it; I was subsequently accused of attempting to induce a sugar coma so I would seem more productive than my colleagues after a vacation.
Sure, they're bit expensive. But to our group of friends, it's a treat worth the money. And something sweet to add to our time in Cayucos. If you cheap, there's a gas station two blocks down that sells chips ahoy. -

I refer to these cookies as crack cookies because they are just that addicting.
I haven't actually been to their location, in fact, I was introduced to them at a little wine bar in Pismo Beach. Lucky for me, I found a little boutique shop in Costa Mesa that also sells them.
These cookies really live up to the hype. They are sweet, salty and just enough. Well they are enough after you've eaten all that you bought. LOL
You can buy them in packs of 3, 6, or 12 and at about $1 a cookie its completely worth it. After you try them you will wonder how you've lived so long without them. I don't know how they can pack so much flavor into that little cookie and with so few ingredients. I keep thinking that I want to try and make them, but why bother when I can just buy the perfect ones.
A fair warning should be issued with this review: I suggest either only buying them in packs of three or hiding them from yourself because you won't be able to stop eating them once you start. -

Stopped by here after reading the reviews here, and I already knew I was in for a treat when I was overwhelmed by a warm cookie smell as I walked in this little red barn.
The cookies are like shortbread, with a little extra moistness and subtle salt on the top. My boyfriend and I liked the plain ones the best. Brought some back with me, and I was asked where they came from! -

I've Been thinking of these cookies all day - I can't concentrate and wondering if its worth spending 13 dollars for a dozen cookies and - Yes Sir I believe it is..
I will order 2 dozen on Monday because it takes 2-3 business days and i want to savor and share them at work....
This place is the best cookie shop ever - talk about sweet, salty and savory! If only it wasn't so far! -

I saw an article in a vacation magazine for this cookie company and added to our list of places to visit! I'm glad we did because the staff here are so lively and fun!
Nestled in Cayucos on ocean avenue, adjacent to the Cass House, this little shop has big flavor and an awesome staff! We looked around and one of the ladies were giving us some history, flavor, and of course a sales pitch... What business doesn't unless they aren't interested in their own products.
The chocolate chip cookie we shared was very tasty, just like those old fashioned butter cookies except with a perfect hint of chocolate chunks! It was a perfect dessert after brunch on the pier! -

When I get to heaven I hope they have these cookies!
This is a charming boutique bakery, filled to the brim with a dozen young women busily baking delicious cookies. My favorite is the bourbon cookies, you don't taste alcohol, they have more depth than the original flavor but aren't as overwhelming as the espresso.
Enjoy! -

Mmmmmm.... I'm sorry, I can't write a review right now. I'm too busy eating the best darn cookies ever!
Brown Butter Cookie Company is a cute little barn house that smells of fresh baked cookies and is filled with smiling women hand-rolling the dough for the most amazing cookies you've ever tasted. I had the gluten free cocoa-mint. You wouldn't think mint and sea salt would go together, but they do! Their cookies have a perfectly mild sweetness, and they melt in your mouth like brown sugar. I just wish they offered more gluten free flavors (hint, hint).
This place definitely merits a stop if you are ever in the area. Also, I just noticed you can order their cookies online! It's more fun to stop by the shop, but if you don't live near Cayucos online ordering is an easy way to get your cookie fix. But I really recommend going there. It's so cute, and it's right next to the pier. -

Chino, CA
My favorite part about baking is eating the sugar-butter mixture before you add the other ingredients (you know what I am talking about, don't lie). Honestly that's kind of what these original cookies taste like except more refined.
Love how when you walk in it smells like heaven and you see the ladies rolling the cookies. It just gives you the charming old-school feel a city like Cayucos exudes. Add that to the water-front town it is in and you are transported back into time when things were hand made and not imported from China.
Original BB cookies run you about $1 a pop. Well worth it, my friends.

A few yards down from the Cass House you will find this charming cookie shop. As soon as you walk in, it is CROWDED full of cookie fans! There are few tables of women mixing and baking cookies. It's nice to watch the behind-the scenes as you sample all the cookie samples.
The cookies are baked fresh every. Stopped by here to sample and pick up samples for fam and friends.
My fave is the original brown butter with salt AND the bourbon...oh the boubon. The cookies is a perfect shortbread consistency with the sweetness of the bourbon flavor with the delicate salt on top that gently just tickles your taste buds giving you an AH-Mazing flavor contrast!
You must try this people. I never heard of Cayucos, CA... now we've met! -

Manhattan, NY
All the way from California to NYC, a little box of cookies appeared in my office labeled Brown Butter Sea Salt Cookies. I'm just going to cut to the chase here - these bite-sized wonders were amazing. And they were made just as their name implied - of butter that was brown, and with a bit of sea salt added. They are sugarily satisfying, and each may be eaten in one bite so as to leave no evidence. Just as soon as you lament that a cookie would soon be completely swallowed, you would be greeted by a little surprise in the form of the sea salt - but only as you are finishing the cookie, and not before.
Brown Butter Cookie - if you are reading this, I implore you to open a location in NYC.Listed in: Office Candies

Hermosa Beach, CA
These cookies are not the best I ever had, but they are certainly delicious! A little drier than I expected (i.e., than my preference), but nothing wrong with that. The sea salt added to sugary - and chocolatey - goodness is quite tasty. I highly recommend the cocoa and gluten-free mint chocolate cookies...yum!!! The staff are friendly, always smiling, the store is quaint and full of character, and the surrounding area is beautiful! My only complaint is the price...$14.50 for 12 small cookies is a shock, but look at it as paying for a palatal experience.

A bit expensive, but so glad we stopped here. We had seen the AAA article and were intrigued. We liked the original sea salt but wished we could have bought some honey sea salt cookies! They were sold out when we first got there (but told us they would be making more), so we bought a few different cookies and headed towards the pier to pair them with some coffee.
Side note: there was a pelican on the pier just walking between fisherman...hilarious and terrifying.
After our stroll on the pier, we visited BBCC again, only to find out that they had sold out of the honey cookies again. However, we did get a sample...which ensured our return to BBCC the next time we are up north. Third time's a charm, right? -

Come, tourists, leave your money with our local businesses! ;)
Friendly staff/ladies working here, and nice to see another small business open up in our little town. Wouldn't call their cookies phenomenal, but as others say I applaude their efforts. Great place to stop in a grab a chocolate chip cookie, but I wouldn't go buying a whole bag. Keep up the great work. :) -

While the Brown Butter Cookies were ok, they were over shadowed by an unfriendly staff. We were the only ones in the store when we entered, but after handing us samples (without a smile) there was no offer of help in finding a bag of over-priced cookies with the mix we were looking for.
I must say, I am super excited that I picked up a bag of the honey sea salt cookies. Those were delish! They get all my stars! I can live without the others and can definately find a better, lower priced cookie sold by a friendlier staff. But, I will now be searching to duplicate the honey sea salt cookies. -

I can't explain these cookies, but they are yummy. I will admit they aren't the cheapest things in the world, but what there are? It is interesting and it is as rare as the beauty in Cayucos.

After the review in AAA travel magazine and various other Yelper reviews, I was excited and prepared to be blown away by this place. The original "brown butter sea salt" cookie was moderately tasty - nothing too special though. The "gluten-free mocha" cookie was like eating powdery-nothing...it was crumbly and tasteless.
The bright highlight was the amazing, finally happy to have something to rave about, "honey sea salt" cookie - these are thin, wafer like cookies that are ridiculously delicious. They are light, and have just the right sprinkle of sea salt. Without this cookie, our trip into this spot would have been forgettable. I can say that this one just may be my favorite cookie - ever. So, great comeback to you BBCC for making my frown turn upside down.
As for the environment, the woman who gave us samples when we walked in the door was friendly and ready to answer any questions we had. You can literally watch the baking staff rolling cookie balls right there, right behind the counter. That is somewhat interesting to see so close to the merchandise/cookie purchase area. But thanks to the honey/sea salt, it was worth the visit. -

"Brown butter sea salt" cookies in original, cocoa and espresso from the Brown Butter Cookie Company. Salty, buttery, crumbly, so good!
This cookie is fat and cute! Each little mound of smoothness looks so perfect, you'd think they were made by a Martha Stewart robot! (They're not; the company proudly proclaims that their cookies are hand-rolled, by humans, I presume.) Based on the cookie size and my gluttony level, I could easily pop the whole thing into my mouth, but, anticipating a gourmet experience, I restrained: my first taste was actually a delicate nibble. The texture and buttery-ness of the "original" cookie reminded me of shortbread, though a lot softer (no snap when you bite in). It fell apart on my tongue into grainy crumbles, allowing me to taste each pure ingredient one at a time, like I was eating a cookie deconstructed: oh, there's a grain of sugar... mmm, there's sea salt... oh, a rush of the browned butter... is that a spice? ...oh, yum, more sugar.
I also tried and loved the "cocoa," but the "original" was somehow more flavorful to me. I ended up eating two of those, to only one cocoa. This says a lot because I am undoubtedly a chocolate person. I did not try the "espresso" because I don't really like coffee flavors, but now I feel like I missed out and should've just taken one before the other office-vultures swooped in. The website also lists "bourbon" as a flavor-- intriguing!-- and "gluten-free chocolate mint"-- also intriguing! I definitely need to try those. In a delirious high off these cookies, I imagine skipping around a golf-manicured lawn, collecting the cute, golden- to deep-brown-colored cookies like Easter eggs! Ooh, are there move over there? But my basket is full with five of each flavor! Oh my! (skip, skip to another cluster of cookie mounds) Thanks, Dessert Bunny!
Well, back to reality. The reality is that I need to thank the foodie gods that my boss went to a conference in Santa Barbara and encouraged a coworker to stop in the little town of Cayucos to try these cookies, and hallelujah that he brought some back to share! ...because I don't know if I'd ever have driven 'round those parts and had the chance to be introduced to this amazing cookie, and new love of my life. Luckily, this infatuation can continue as a long-distance relationship-- the cookies can be mail-ordered from their website (below). I feel as though I will be asking for these for my birthday (psst.. it's in October), if I can wait that long. -
Review from Sophia G.
Eh. I don't get it.
I, too, could shape and bake flour, salt and brown sugar into little balls and bake them. The cookies are good, but NOT worth the price. It's more fun to just check out the place- they've set up a table for baking right in the middle of the store so you can stop in and chat with the whole crew while sampling and buying. Service is great, but flavor doesn't explain the unreasonably high price. Stop in if you get the chance, but try not to get suckered into buying anything. -

1 word to describe these cookies AMAZING!!!!! So good, you just have to try them to understand how good they really are. The staff is friendly and they will let you sample any of the flavors you want to try. A bit pricey but totally worth it! I believe they ship there cookies so you don't have to be in the area to try a little piece of heaven.

Review from Jenn C.
The original cookie is excellent (like a fat sable with rich, brown butter flavor and flecks of delicious sea salt on top), but that chewy honey cookie has stolen my heart - it's got a fabulous chew (love), it smells and tastes like the worlds best honey...I could eat a million.
They're really nice and smiley there....but somehow they look a little too much like creepy robots rolling out cookies all day with their smiles. And it's a TEENY expensive (upon hearing what I paid for one cookie, one of my companions ripped me a new one), but it's really worth every penny. -

The. Best. Cookie. Ever. Seriously. Drive up to Cayucos and head right over to the Brown Butter Cookie Company. We were in town for a quick stop on our way back to way LA and their cute storefront drew me in. They give you samples of the plain and chocolate, and boy that is the best advertising. Once you have one bite you must open your wallet and pay $1 for the very tiny cookie. Crazy? No way. Worth every penny, I am sad that I didn't pay for a hundred of them. These cookies are the perfect combination of sweet and salty. I am now obsessed and will body blow anyone who finishes the last one.

Saw this on the AAA magazine. They raved about it. First the service there was terrible. Not friendly at all. You spend $23 for a dozen cookies you would think they would be nice. Cookies were not the best. But crap service. Don't go for the hype.

Oh, dear lord these cookies are good. Dangerously good. Well, actually the calorie count isn't too bad and there's only about 6 grams of sugar.
I just can't have one. I'm also known for eating several in one sitting.
Yes, they are expensive for cookies, but worth it. My favorite is the cocoa one, but the originals are good too. -
Review from liz c.
I'm a fan of the Brown Butter Cookie story and the great customer service (it's like working in Santa's Workshop - all the cookie elves were happy to make their customers happy..) but I'm not a HUGE fan of the cookie itself. Personally, if I could eat several of the cookies in one sitting, then the product would be a 5 star, guarantee. But it's a tad too flaky and dense for my liking.
I suppose it doesn't help that I'm not a huge cookie fan either but I really enjoyed the samples I tried. The original was yummy, I just wasn't sure how much it was overhyped by my companions. Still, I went with a 4-pack (4 cookies for $7) of the espresso - be sure to try it if the original doesn't win you over! Loved the coffee kick and it was a little less bland than the original.
Cute place with very friendly employees. I'd definitely visit again when in Cayucos! -

You have to try this place. I went in there first thing on a Saturday morning and it was filled with a bevy of enchanting women, laughing, cooking and I think one may have even winked at me!
Tasty, tasty, tasty and very pleasant people. -
Review from Linda L.
Their namesake cookie is a good cookie. Richly packed with the flavor of browned butter. If you are expecting a smooth cookie, the initial impression may not wow you, but stick with it. The cookie is gritty with coarse sugar, but it actually grows on you and becomes a bit addicting.
We also picked up a bag of day-old oatmeal cookies. Hands down, these were the standout for us. Crispy exterior and a soft wonderful inside studded with moist raisins (and I don't like raisins).
Their cookies may not come off as cheap: $23 for 24 Brown Butter cookies that are about 1-1/2 inches wide and maybe an inch tall. Their day-old oatmeal cookies were $7 for six. The pricing goes with the territory and the town. All natural ingredients, such as butter, carry a price tag.
Brown Butter Cookie Company is located across the street from the public parking lot right at the end of the line before you hit the beach. Grab some cookies, then saunter over to Duckies for chowder and fish. Head down to the beach and enjoy.
