I don't know much about the store since it moved to Alameda, but I bought many pairs of shoes from the old store when it was on either 35th or Fruitvale AveI above E.14 th street over 60 years ago. I went to High School at Fremont High with the owner's daughter, Jackie Brown, and was also a classmate of Walt Fisher who worked at the store. It was a great store then and a wonderful family owned business, I'm glad to see it is still owned and run by that same family.
I vividly remember the old ramshackle building and the wooden Popeye figure with the movable arms that was mounted on the roof in the front of the store. Fond memories, I will visit the Alameda store the first chance I get. For the record, if there is anyone still around from the old store and school days, I bid them hello (my name in those days was Al Colacicco) -

Brown Brothers a dying breed - a friendly neighbourhood shoe store. Their service is top notch, prices are competitive, and they've been around for longer than I have (since 1881). I have stopped by occasionally over the years and have always come away impressed and well fit.
Their selection runs a wide range from trendy sneakers to safety shoes. I'm notoriously hard on my shoes and have learned my own "you get what you pay for" lesson. Paying for Quality is a better choice for me, and only Red Wing or Brown Brothers really cuts it for me. And I'll soon see how well they do in a few weeks with my son and his size 12-13 feet..... -

Well ... the sneaks didn't work out after all. Bummer. They felt pretty good while walking in the store, but once I spent more time walking/running the next day, I noticed they were too loose in the heel.
I can't fault Brown Brothers for my disappointing discovery. ... Ended up returning the shoes and going to 'See Jane Run' in Berkeley. Picked out an expensive but extremely comfortable/sturdy pair of 'Brooks GTS' and haven't looked back. Four stars for BB because the service was great and they appeared to have a great selection if you're a dude.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Another visit to Brown Brothers, I think they are the Best! Better then East Bay On-line... possibly.
Looking at the shoes, browsing hmmm!! I don't see what I want. I decided to order some Nike running shoes because Brown Brothers doesn't always carry every pair of athletic shoes. Low and behold Greg, one of the associates brings out the Nike book and ask what do you want. I see what I want to purchase with the correct color and he said it will be here in 4 to 5 days. Great... I pay for it ahead of time.
I like shopping here vs. Finish Line or Foot Locker because I don't want what everyone else has. Be different and not a POSER. I buy the majority of my athletic shoes because of the low pressure and if I want to try on five pairs of shoes. No problem. Customer satisfaction No.1. -

The best shoe store in the bay bar none....the brown's consistently deliver all the new styles and bring service that you just don't see too much these days. I purchased a pair of Rockports for work that normally retail at $100 for $75 ....that's some nice savings my friends.Check em' out !

I'm an Alameda native and have been going to BBS for as long as I can remember. Even before they opened on weekends, and before they accepted debit/credit cards.
They have great selections, and reasonable prices. Sometimes you might find a pair slightly more expensive at BBS, but would you rather drive 5 minutes to BBS or would you rather drive 1/2 hour to Hayward or San Leandro and spend more on petrol, for a pair of shoes, and to save only a few dollars? Penny Wise, Pound Foolish.... Stick to BBS.
They get shoes that other places don't carry, anyways.
I'm happy that they finally started carrying selections rather than just sport shoes and Sperry Topsiders like back in the day..... I normally buy more high end shoes than BBS carries, but when the time is here, I do come in and get what I need.
BBS is definitely an Alameda Tradition. -

As a teen, I rode AC Transit to Brown Bros to purchase a pair of Nike Air's with money I made at a City of Oakland summer day camp. They were really nice. I didn't know they were still around.

Wayyyyyy cheaper than Foot Action, Athlete's foot, Footlocker, etc...
This is your moms and pops shoe store - nothing fancy , just a room full of shoes - Retro Jordan kicks, running shoes, tennis shoes, casual shoes, work boots, dress shoes.
The shoes are really cheap, since they own the building they don't have to jack up the price of their merchandise.
A few people across the bay would come here just to buy shoes. -

Yes, there are other shoe outlet/ warehouses. But, those are chains and none that offer low-prices, and selection of Brown Brothers. I've been a loyal customer for years. This corner shop has truly saved me so much money growing up. I spent plenty of back-to-school money and I even bought my prom shoes from this Alameda shoe staple. I always get lucky and come in on fresh shipment days. I usually don't leave empty handed, because I get to comb over most of the new arrivals before other people do.
I like how there is no sales pressure, but the employees are happy to help. I don't have to spend long looking for that next pair of shoes, because although it's small, they pack a lot in this shop/ warehouse. -

I was watching " Wassup Rockers" on IFC and delaying the inevitable: I needed to get new work shoes. I didn't have a day longer, I had thrown my old pair away Friday after work. Earlier in the day I had already seen terrible choices and Kohls, and just straight up embarssing no man's land options at Payless.
My girlfriend said " Don't buy cheap shoes , you should take care of your feet."
So while she was studying I decided to walk around the block to Brown Brothers. While I headed there, I noticed a trampy women who resembled the girl in " Wassup Rockers". My life is so ironic like that. I looked away and headed to see that one of the workers was bringing in their street sign.
But it's only 3:50pm!!
I walked in, saw a great selection of black shoes and saw these sweet Kenneth Cole's for $69. They had my size and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes.
I really am not impressed by there their casual shoe collection. I got some converses a month ago because they had no vans. I woulda bought some nikes but all these had were air force ones, and I'm not trying to be Nelly.
And the dude who resembles Big Boi from OutKast who works here kinda gave me 'tude for walking in ten minutes till closing. I guess they must do a lot of business to give me that kind of treatment.
I love my new shoes though, and this place is literally a block from my house. So mad convenient in the end, I like it... -

Brown Brothers..... you guys all came thru again! Thanks for getting me the well sought after 11's. You guys come thru all the time! Your customer service far exceeds that from the Footlockers and Champs. Unlike these stores I feel I am a valued customer and not just a sales quota for that day. Please support Brown Brothers Shoes as these stores are hard to find nowadays!

No crap, no fluff, no fancy ads, straight dealin...
I remember going to brown brothers for shoes since I was a wee little one... and they were always spot on. Sure, their hours are sometimes a bit odd to deal with, but they're a family business, whatcha gonna do but support them anyway. -
Review from Eugene L.
When I was a Kid I used to buy my shoes at Brown Brothers . I would wear Converse Chuck Taylor High Tops and then when I hit Junior High I switched to Steel Toe Boots and been with those since. I switched to buying Big 5 boots but noticed that they didn't last too long. So I decided to switch back to Brown Brothers and go with quality. I rolled to Brown Brothers in my Blue Whip. I arrived and wandered in and was pleased with their large selection of shoes. I saw that they carried Carolina work boots and talked to one of their sale reps. He measured up my feet and brought out a few of my choices . The first set he brought out fit my feet like a padded glove . Love at first fit . I pulled my plastic charged it and walked out with a new set of boots. Great service and selection a winner in my book.

I really wish I could give this place a hundred stars! I am a big Nike Cortez fan and have been wearing them for almost 10 years now. When I moved to Alameda six years ago I discovered this place through a friends recommendation. The store is small, but it has a really good selection. What makes me happiest is that they have my number on the bulletin board so when new styles of cortez come in, they call me! They've made many special orders for me. They will show me the newest catalog and I tell them the styles I like. My favorite pair of the moment is the chocolate brown with the orange swoosh and the hot pink. Can't say enough about these guys, first class all the way.

This is the place to go to when you're looking for the latest Nike kicks. I've been coming here for over a decade (yet my latest adds have been from NikeID). The guys here are really great and helpful. They also carry dress shoes and construction work boots....all at reasonable prices. Beats all the retail chains...hands down.

brown brothers used to be in oaktown in the fruitvale district. i'm glad they didn't move far. they have a extensive collection of sports and tennis wear. they stock floursheim, stacey adams, and similar shoes.
stacey adams high heel boots sell here for 70's while macy's sells them for $95.
the reason? they don't pay rent. in oaktown, they owned their own building. i assume it's the same in alameda.
they have ergomatic shoes also, rockport, clarke, etc.Listed in: alameda…, shoes are made for walking

I love this place. My 13 year stepson is graduating today and he wears a size 15 shoe. My husband and I had been looking for a week to find him dress shoes or ALL black sneakers. We couldn't find them anywhere and were on our way to Stoneridge Mall but then a light bulb came on and I remember this wonderful place. The salesman was so helpful and within 5 minutes of us walking in we were walking about with a pair of black dress shoes that didnt cost an arm and a leg. Thank you Brown Brother's for saving us time, gas and money.

I thought the big Popeye logo on the corner of 9th and lincoln was the coolest thing as kid. I got my first pair of dress shoes here, some black square toed kenneth coles. Then later on I got a couple more dress shoes, then some nikes, then some 'verses, and a jordan here and there, on and on and on

When you wanna be the first on the block to rock the new Jordan's first......pick 'em up here. Most of the true sneakerpimps in the bay know of this store. Helpful, good variety, good prices and pleanty of parking in the area. Damn, I should've kept this place to myself.

I lived next door for years and was so happy to have the best shoe place around 2 places down. If you live in the East Bay, go over a bridge or through the tunnel to this place and you will pay less for badass shoes and you will get great service to boot.

this is one of the greatest places in alameda. if you lived in a alameda one time or another, you know brown brothers. my dad used to get his work boots and i'd always go with him to get the jordans, the barkleys, or the latest pennys. with the retro kicks coming out, seeing them on the shelf here takes me back to when i was a sz7. much love to the family.

men's shoes... kicks, athletic, work boots, dress, casual, wingtips... what more can you ask? the prices are seriously low... since they own the building they don't have the same overhead costs. as if a great selection weren't enough, five generations of family ownership lets you feel even better about supporting this fine shop. lots of kenneth coles and stacy adams, which suited me fine. got two pairs of nice shoes for around $130, would have been close to $200 elsewhere.
