It had been over 3 years since visiting Broussard's. This visit was just a good as the other times i had been while in the Cape Girardeau MO area. Food quality was tasty and not greasy in the least for a tasty shrimp poboy and gater tails. Service was excellent.
Still hate the fact they have a smoking section though, which you have to walk through to get to non smoking... -

Yay to new experiences!
After trying this place out, I'm officially a fan of gator meat. I would have never thought about it, but that was their specialty and they cooked it very well. The gator bites tasted just like chicken nuggets.
This place is seat yourself and very casual. The service was great. The waitress was on top of everything.
My fiance and I tried the seafood platter for two. There was a lot of fried foods on that platter. I felt overwhelmed after a while from all the oiliness, but small amounts of each was good. The only thing I didn't like was the frog legs. Everyone tells me they taste like chicken. When I bit into it, it didn't break apart like chicken. It was just too chewy. I had to spit it out. I couldn't take the idea of having a frog in my mouth.
My favorite part of the meal was the jambalaya. Next time I'm going to order a big order of it. -

The server was terrific! She was upbeat and very helpful.
We had Gator Bites. I liked them. They had yummy seasoning and were fried. They came with cocktail sauce.
The bread pudding was delicious. It was served warm with rum sauce. The bread pudding was raisin free, so I was happy. -

This was a great stop. We were seated quickly and the server was polite and knew her menu very well. Lots of tasty things to choose from on the menu and everything that was being brought out from the kitchen looked awesome. Great size dinner portions and the place was clean.
I had the Crawfish Etouffee with the Gator Bites and I couldn't have been happier. We also shared rice and beans that were very tasty.
My only knock on Broussards is that from the seating area you have to go through the bar to get to the bathrooms and for a non-smoker... that's pretty rough. -

I like to eat here in the winter for the comfort type of food they serve. I don't like the smoke but I do like the music that comes with that kind of bar atmosphere. You get very large servings here so keep that in mind when you order.

Down in the Cape for work and yelped the local fare, and Broussard's hit the spot....
Decent priced beer, friendly bartender and an awesome catfish sandwich. If you go from 12-3 or roughly 3ish they will give you the half catfish po boy and fried for $5.89, and it is huge. Seasoned fries were hot and crispy as well as plentiful.
The oysters were a small but fine tasting and priced about right for the size (I think) @ $13 a dozen. I was about $25 out the door for all that and 3 Bud Bottles.
Smoking is still allowed in MO in the bars so if that bugs you... sit in the dining room or don't come! -

Broussard's is a landmark Cajun restaurant in downtown Cape Girardeau. It's been around as long as I can remember offering up good Cajun food.
On my most recent visit, late on a Friday night, we were promptly seated by the friendly staff. We started with an order of alligator bites and boiled crawfish. Breaded and deep fried, the alligator bites are better than ones I've tried at other places. If you haven't tried alligator, go for it, of course it tastes like chicken. The crawfish were also tasty and messy. A salad came with my meal and I went for the house dressing which was nice. For my main course, I ordered the shrimp and crab gumbo. I'm no gumbo expert, but the taste was good and there was a good amount of shrimp in it. My side of fries was cooked perfectly crispy and delicious. Another good option for your main course is the half and half which consists of half breaded and fried meat of your choice and half etouffee style meat of your choice. I've gotten the crawfish half and half and found it to be good.
3&1/2 stars for Broussard's, but heck I'll bump it up to a 4 because you probably can't find much better Cajun in Missouri -

On the road from KC to Gulfport and this was our dinner selection. Little off the highway but figured from the reviews that it was worth it.
We were seated promptly and our waitress was friendly and obviously enjoyed her job and working with people.
I was concerned about the size of the orders so I ended up ordering an appetizer of steamed shrimp, side of red beans & rice, and a salad.
I was so glad I didn't order the meal of steamed shrimp! Holy cow! The appetizer was probably 25 shrimp perfectly steamed and seasoned brought with cocktail sauce and butter. They didn't need sauce! The red beans & rice were delicious and probably some of the best I have ever tried. Nice spice!
After being good and eating a health conscious meal...I decided we needed to share the bread pudding. That part of the meal took at least 1/2 hour to get to the table and we were very ready to leave by that point to get back on the road. Our leisurely meal took us 1.75 hours off the road...not good!
The bread pudding was very tasty! Not too sweet, great sauce.
BIGGEST issue was that 1/2 the restaurant is a bar. You go thru the bar to be seated, thru the bar to the restrooms, and when the bar filled up the smoke definitely infiltrated the eating area. A big problem for me cause smoke turns off my appetite pretty quickly.
The food was wonderful. The waitress terrific. The facility...not so great. -

Not much to brag about concerning this place. The service was poor from the get go. No greeting. No escort to a table. No menu. No water. No refills on ice tea. The food was not good. The fried catfish was more breading than fish. The breading was gummy and not crisp. The gumbo was served lukewarm and tasted like it had been cooked a week ago and improperly reheated. The side of jambalaya was mushy rice that was in dire need of hot sauce. Yick!
Nothing but a waste of my time and money. -

The food isn't bad but way over priced for dishes that are mostly rice. If the smoker's are in full force, every bite you take in the nonsmoking section still takes like a cigarette.
The gumbo is my favorite but the tiny salad shrimp they use in it does the dish an injustice. It could be sooooo much better with good ingredients. You already pay for premium ingredients that they should but aren't using. -

I eat here whenever I visit Cape Girardeau. Good selection of food to choose from and consistently good. Great "towny", college hangout. Crawfish poppers and etouffee a must, at least for me.

For some reason, I always found myself bringing dates here. great cajun food. Its a bar/restaurant with room for a band. The restaurant is decorated rather festive, but the bar seemed a bit...crappy. I will go back anytime I near Cape Girardeau, MO. I highly recommend this local treasure. They do serve Jim Beam, but I didn't have any.

I've been here a bunch, growing up around cape when i got the cash i went here! GREAT cajun food, you can't pick an item and be disapointed with it, live music, full bar, great atmosphere. I love the aligator, crab, crawdads, catfish, gumbo, jumbalaya and they have a GREAT salad with a blue cheese dressing. If you come here plan on dropping a pretty penny in my opinion because your gona love it and you'll probaly drink a few adult beverages. Normaly we drop atleast 50 bucks for the tab but for a fun filled night with great food its hard to beat especially with these low prices.

This restaurant/bar is near the waterfront, tucked in along stores and shops. The folks at my hotel recommended it and I had seen it on here so I figured it was worth a shot. I liked the place for the small town bar type atmosphere. People seemed to generally like being there and there was a band setting up to play.
The food, while good, just didn't thrill me. I liked that it was something different, but that was about it. I got the Creole Chicken Parmesan which is basically some fried chicken pieces topped with a mildly spicy creole marinara sauce on a bed of rice. Everything just tasted sort of warm to me, as though the ingredients had been prepared well beforehand and they just assembled it.
I think had the food been hot and fresh it would have been a different experience alogether. -

This place is an impressive gem for Cape Girardeau. I don't think you can find better Cajun food for 100 miles. I hung out a lot here during college, great blues nights on the weekends. I also had my first drink served by a bartender here.

Frankly I wasn't expecting great food in Cape. But this place had gumbo that was simply terrific. Very friendly and informative waitress. I came on all-you-can-eat day and the gumbo was just $7.99 . . . I had two helpings and thoroughly enjoyed them both. It came with awful white bread and a better-than-average salad. Have the gumbo.

Review from David R.

Maybe it's better at dinner? Lunch, however, was a sad disappointment. The gumbo was watery and the jambalaya was in desperate need of seafood or meat (more like a side of rice with the occasional morsel of meat). I will say , however, that the French fries were amazing (and the only reason I gave this restaurant two stars instead of one).
