A couple of months ago I decided to try Broussard's after hearing a few friends who are Beaumont natives rave about how great the place was.  It also helped that the restaurant is approximately 10 minutes from my house.

I must say that after my first visit I questioned whether or not I would return.  The place is exceptionally clean and the food was good, but the young lady working the front counter didn't greet me when I walked in and furthermore acted like she had better things to do during the rest of my time there.  With that being my first time there, that was a huge turn off. But, I digress.

I usually order the two-meat plate (ribs, sausage, potato salad, beans) and the portions are enough for me to have a meal later on or the following day.  I'm sure most folks in Houston are used to places like Pappa's and formerly Luther's, but I'll be honest, I actually prefer Broussard's.  That being the case, I have returned a few more times since my first visit.  I haven't seen the young lady who was working the front counter since my first visit and each of the employess I encounterd in subsequent visits seemed much more appreciative of my business.

One gripe I have is that the last time I visited (which was approximately 2 weeks ago), I noticed when I got home that my food was unusually greasy - to the point where grease pooled in the areas surrounding the meat in the styrofoam container.  I had never experienced this problem during previous visits and will make sure to check for this in the future. I also advise anyone considering making  a visit to Broussard's to do the same.

If the food and restaurant standard continues to decline, I will no longer be a loyal customer.

After the fine words in the Chron, I took my team there today for lunch.

Definitely "different" from usual Houston BBQ - East Tex. The draw is their link sausage which is more like boudin. The casing is tough so you slice it open and scoop out the meat/rice mix onto bread (and yes they give you 3 slices of white bread). I think folks liked it but did not rave. Everyone did rave about their brisket. A little sweeter than usual.

Massive amounts of meat on the 2-meat combo (no one was able to finish) and good selection of sides.

Very friendly staff. A bit slow as a large crowd of folks must have read the same review.

Give it a try. Nothing fancy but clean and cheap and a different twist on Texas BBQ.

After passing by this place to and from work nearly every day for the past several months and being a sucker for any place advertising barbecue, I finally decided to stop in for a quick lunch.  (But, fefore doing so, I did some Googling and learned that this is just a new location for a well-regarded operation in Beaumont, so my expectations were fairly high.)

The two-meat plate with two sides sounded about right and the $9.25 price tag seemed perfectly reasonable.  I opted for the ribs (DUH!) and the brisket with dirty rice and BBQ beans rounding out the meal.

About five minutes later, the friendly lady working the counter brought the food out to my table in a closed styrofoam container.  My first impression upon popping the lid was, "Wow, that's a LOT OF FOOD!"  The three ribs I got were very thick, meaty, and nearly fall-off-the-bone tender and the sauce left nothing to be desired.  One unusual thing about them was that they were also cut in half into six shorter "riblets", presumably so they would more easily fit in the box.

The brisket portion was also generous; I'd guess at least 1/3 of pound's worth.  It was good, but not quite tender enough to justify the thick slicing.  The sides were just fine, but nothing particularly remarkable.

Nearing halfway in, it became apparent that something nearly unprecedented was about to happen - I wasn't going to be able to finish a tasty two-meat BBQ plate.  I managed to finish the sides, but kept a good half of the meat to take home for later.  It won't be wasted.

There are many good BBQ joints around Houston, and while this one doesn't top my list, I can't think of any that will give you more for your money.  I'm sure I'll be revisiting Broussard's before very long.

Thanks for bringing your Beaumont flavor to Houston. Everyone, if you want to taste old-school BBQ Links(not that SMOKED SAUSAGE that others call links) you need to check out Broussard's. The ribs are spectacular. As far as the sides, who goes to a real BBQ joint to eat those anyway?

This is the expansion of a long established institution in Beaumont, Texas that I've frequented over the years. There are other great BBQ places in Houston for ribs, chicken, and brisket, but aside from Broussard's and Papa's (the locally owned neighborhood spot on Scott St., NOT to be confused with the chain restaurant), very few have the Creole style hand stuffed links we love in the Golden Triangle (Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange). Most BBQ places give you smoked sausage and call it a link, but the two are not interchangeable.  Broussard's links are all beef, which is a slightly different flavor from a pork-beef mix, so keep that it mind. The brisket is usually tender (alas not always), and the ribs are great. As far as the chicken goes, I hope you like dark meat, because a leg quarter is usually all you can get (I like white meat, so I usually don't order the chicken). I would strongly recommend that you try the link, since many BBQ lovers in Houston probably haven't had a hand stuffed link before. If you're hosting a party, they also have reasonable meat sampler party trays.
