So sad that the brothers are losing their lease on the restaurant here and having to reopen in another location.  I hope this historic landmark is not ripped to shreds by the remodel.  The owners want to turn it into a resort.

Brothers Restaurant has been a happy place for me to go for a number of years.  I have many fond memories of eating on "the porch", and enjoying the bar with a fireplace, which is beautiful.  Last time I was here had the small portion of the prime rib, which was huge, and the butternut squash soup, which is a must-have.  My boyfriend enjoyed his steak as well and said it was cooked perfectly.  I can only hope that they continue with their wonderful recipes in the new location in Los Olivos in the former Patrick's Cafe.  The old stagecoach inn won't be the same after the remodel, which I guess starts in April of 2012.

Came here for my birthday on a Sunday evening in January.   We had reservations but it was not too busy.  When we walked into the restaurant the fire place and couches surrounding it was warm and inviting.  It was rustic and cozy meets fine dining.

I had the rack of lamb and it was perfectly cooked medium rare.  It's one of the best I've every had.  My bf had the huge prime rib and it was pretty good; it did not melt in your mouth like others have described it.

The service was excellent.  She even brought out a free ice cream drizzled in chocolate dessert for my birthday and it was delicious.

This place is excellent.  It is the epitome of a wine country dinner experience.  Rustic and cozy, this historical landmark has an old country charm that really matches the area.

The food is very well cooked.  The Salmon is perfectly cooked and light.  Their chinese chicken salad(sounds like a weird order, I know) is nice, because it is a touch bitter and has a hot mustard vinaigrette that is very different.  They could let up a bit on how many fried wontons they add on top though.  The slow cooked Prime Rib is also delicious.  But the highlight for me is the Pork Chop, which has a brandy glaze and bacon mashed potatoes.  One of the best I can remember in a long time.

They also have a great wine list, with a varied level of pricing, which of course includes many local vineyards.  But they also allow you to bring your own if you were previously out tasting, with a small corkage fee.

Brother's has moved to the former Patrick's Sidestreet Cafe in Los Olivois. It is now called Side's Hardware and Shoes (no kidding). We had an outstanding lunch. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every table was taken when we dropped in at 2:30 in the afternoon. We understand they are in the process of taking over the Red Barn in Santa Ynez so fans in the area will have two opportunities to enjoy their wonderful fare. We will give a more complete review after we have trie breakfast and dinner.

"Dessert is probably the most important stage of the meal, since it will be the last thing your guests remember before they pass out all over the table" -- William Powell

After an afternoon of wine tasting, dinner at the Ballard Inn with four bottles of wine...it was time to head over to Brother's for dessert before passing out :)  Two mudpies, one sundae and one molten chocolate cake later..we all agreed in spite of the sometimes mediocre food at dinner, this was a very, very enjoyable night.

Based on the desserts alone, I'l have to come back and try the food.  Loved the dark chocolate flavor and decadence of the molten cake.  Well done...

    Great food in quaint locale.

    We ordered:

    filet mignon - tasty, tender
pork chops - surprisingly juicy and well seasoned

    corkage fee $15/bottle

We had dined at the Ballard Inn the night before, we would highly recommend this restaurant over the latter.

I have been here many times and have only been disappointed once.  The chicken with goat cheese, the kobe burgers in the bar, the trout with butter sauce, the calamari are all extraordinary and it is hard to decide what to order when I visit.  One late spring they had a strawberry shortcake with sour cream ice cream which sounds weird but is seriously one of the best desserts I ever had!
The only meal I didn't like was when I ordered the lamb chops.  They were awkward to cut so maybe it was my fault of not having good knife skills, not theirs.  I remember the sauce that came with the chops to be yummy.
Also, they serve this bread plate before the meal which is super good.  It is hard not to fill up on bread before the meal.
Look for the art by Cheryl Ladd, it is a cow in the room that was the enclosed porch.

Old historic stagecoach bldg in Los Olivos, Neverland not far away.. Great ambiance, warm cozy fireplace and cozy bar. We were one of the first in and I was browsing thru their cookbook when Matt one of the owners happened to come by. Very friendly.  He happily signed my book with his special pen. We had the trout and salmon in the patio room. Delicious! We were lucky to sit in corner. Beautiful old cypress tree outside window.
They gave us a mud pie for my bf's birthday. Wow! It was so good! Definitely will be back. Too bad their lease is up. They will be moving to another location up the street.

This place has some of the most decadent food I've ever tasted. The brussel sprout appetizer was fantastic. I had oredered the salmon... it was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. My husband ordered the pork dinner. It was so tender and juicy with very little fat. He was extremely pleased. The atmosphere is nice and very quaint with a romantic feel. The staff was helpful and on point. Highly recommend!

Expensive, world-class cuisine in an historic tavern in the charming little village of Los Olivos. At a fun winetasting, our host recommended this delightful restaurant/tavern. We sat next to the kitchen, schmoozed with one of the chefs, one of the brother's. The steak was delicious and done to perfection. The waitstaff was attentive and gracious.

A Zagat-reviewed restaurant in Santa Ynez? A must if you have the time and money. If you're disappointed by anything on the menu, you have killed your taste buds on inferior food. Best meal I've had in California in a year of dining out.

The bottom line is that this place is awesome! After a day of wine tasting in Los Olivos, the wife and I ended our day at the Sarloos Winery (Which is also fantastic) from there it was just a stumble, I mean short walk away to Mattei's Tavern. This building used to be a Wells Fargo Stagecoach stop and is now a historic landmark. When you first walk in, its like coming home. The fireplace is lit and its warm and cozy. The service was very good, but, the food was amazing. I ordered the braised beef with garlic mashed potatoes. My wife ordered the Filet with carmelized onion potatoe gratin stilton cheese-port wine sauce. The potatoe gratin alone was worth the drive, it was the best I have had...ever.
The food was so good, we didn't have room for dessert. If you are going on a weekend, I recommend making reservations. They are also changing locations in March so if you want to experience the food in this location, go now.

We went here after a full day of wine tasting and I have to say the meal was a perfect ending for a fabulous day-my birthday.  I wanted to eat something classic and that could stand up to the beautiful wine we had.  It did not disappoint.

I had the 120z prime rib.  It was cooked to medium rare perfection and melted in my mouth.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I ate it all!  It was so good.  My boyfriend had the veal chop which was delicious and juicy.  I couldn't decide whose meal was better.

The service was also warm and welcoming and definitely at your service.  The prices are expensive but not outrageous and worth every penny.  I would come here every time I come to Los Olivos.

I came here for 'tini Tuesday with friends a while back & sweetie and I thought we should return for dinner at a later time. We decided to go without a reservation and ended up sitting in the bar area.

I ordered a blood orange martini, but the mix was frozen and so I ended up with a lemon drop. The martinis (of all kinds) here are good, so this was not a major nuisance.

The bread plate was cold. Not that some of them weren't good, but I do notice details like this. I ordered the salmon, which was decent and my honey had a burger which was good. I wish they wouldn't serve frozen French fries though - fresh cut is a nice touch at restaurants. We split some salted caramel gelato for dessert - yum!

We'd probably eat here again, but it hasn't made the "ZOMG must return now!" list.

A truly charming place and a fabulous experience from start to finish.

We came in after wine tasting with a fairly "lively" group of six people.  We were very pleased with our waitress and her sense of humor.

The food was to-die-for....the best meal I've had in ages.  The dessert was phenomenal...a chocolate, caramel, salted slice of heaven.  Yum.  Yum...yum!!!!!

Went to dinner with a coworker and was very impressed with the dinner served.  Had the pork belly as a starter (I am not afraid of animal fat, for sure!) which was very flavorful and I really liked the sauce with which it was served; Ordered the lamb chops for the main course and was highly impressed with the flavor of the entire plate: lamb chops over garlic potatoes (and I'm not at all a potatoes kind of person) and roasted vegetables over jus.  I couldn't stop eating it as it was so delicious.  Our wait staff was very good - no complaints.  The pricing was appropriate for the atmosphere and caliber of food offered.  I would definitely return and hopefully soon!

I should start by saying that this story in entirely true....

We stopped by after a long weekend in Cambria. We have heard so many good things about Mattei's and were looking forward to an amazing meal.

What we got was an unbelievable show and a very nice bill.

Arrived a little bit early and decided to sit at the bar for a cocktail before our meal. The bartender wasn't exactly the friendliest but the drinks were poured nicely.

After being shown to our table we noticed what a lovely view of the OPEN KITCHEN we had...this will come into play in a few.

I had my heart set on the french onion soup but apparently the menu outside hadn't been changed to match that nights dinner service. I settled on a traditional cesar salad while my boyfriend had the tuna tartare. Both were good, but nothing too impressive. I'm sure its because I really wanted the soup.

Moving on to the main course. I chose the Oven Roasted Rack of Lamb with sauteed spinach (instead of mash) and Red Wine-Tomato Sauce. I ordered this medium rare. My boyfriend had the special New York steak with a cherry syrah sauce also ordered medium rare.

When the food arrived I immediately sliced into my lamb and was disappointed to see that it was over cooked. I sliced into the other three chops to see if maybe they were a little less done but they were not. That's when the server walked up and asked how everything was. I mentioned about my lamb being over cooked and she insisted that she would take it back. I HATE sending back food but agreed to let her since it was an open kitchen and I could watch what was happening to my rejected plate.

My boyfriend started in on his steak and let me tell you it was amazing. The seasoning was perfect and the cherry syrah sauce was to die for! I was a little jealous, but mostly because he had food.

We watched the server take lamb back to the Chef who then nodded as he took the plate. The next thing you know he has thrown the plate (possibly on the floor, counter, or trash) and an echoing of shattered glass fills the dining room. We were sitting a few feet away and saw the entire show. I do not believe I have ever made a chef have a temper tantrum before...It was probably one of my best restaurant experiences.

My boyfriend finished his steak a few minutes before my plate was brought out. I had noticed the chef glancing over at our table looking rather unhappy. My lamb was brought back by a very apologetic server who mentioned the Chef would be taking care of my meal  since we were not able to eat together. I thanked her and started in on my plate.

The lamb was amazing! It was perfectly seasoned. The tomato wine sauce was unbelievably tasty. I loved the spinach and the tang of the lemon juice that was added. I polished off every last bit of lamb, and even started in on the meaty bones. I am still not sure what the proper etiquette is for rack of lamb, but I am content with eating them like popsicles.

When the check arrived we were beyond surprised to see that the Chef had comped everything but the alcohol...everything! I questioned the server and had mentioned that I thought only my plate would be taken care of...she said that since we didn't get to eat together the Chef had taken care of the entire bill. I actually told the server that the food was so good I would have paid for it.

I highly recommend Mattei's if you are in the Los Olivos area. I can guarantee you a spectacular meal and the possibility of making a memory that will last a lifetime.

Despite visiting this area since childhood, we just made our first visit to Mattei's Tavern and Brother's Restaurant. I love the historic building and decor. We meant to bring our own wine, and forgot, so we ended up ordering cocktails -- the wine list seemed a bit over-priced.

I had the filet and it was absolutely melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. My friend had the New York steak special (for $12 more than my filet) and I didn't think it nearly as good as mine. The potatoes were fine, but the steamed veggies were nothing special, not bad, just plain.

Our server was excellent -- friendly and attentive.

Overall a very enjoyable experience and looking forward to returning.  The bar looked very inviting, as did the burgers on the grill.  Next time we may just do the bar and a burger.

What a cool place! Super historic building, loved the look of it all. Food was great too. I wasn't too hungry, just nibbled a salad and some of everyone else's food. Mashed potatoes were absolutely perfect! The trout and the prime rib were excellent as well. Sadly, this place is moving in a few months as a fancy hotel bought the lease on the building. I hope they keep the historic building up and don't bulldoze it, as that would be a freaking shame.

When I go to Solvang, I leave it up to my family to decide where we eat.  They're part-time locals in this idyllic wino-foodie town with great taste and a knack for enjoying the moment. So when they started telling me about this old stage coach depot with great food, naturally I was surprised.  Kitchy historical gimmicks?  Really?  Apparently not.

Brother's Restaurant at Mattei's Tavern is a Los Olivos landmark for the history of the building and the perfectly prepared, locally sourced California cuisine that is unsurpassed.

The decor is rustically deluxe.  Imagine what ornate design and travel comfort might have looked like in the early 1900's and add in some modern touches in the form of homages to the Brother Chefs on the walls coming together in a ranch world-farm country aesthetic. Sound too frenetic to make sense?  It fits in perfectly with the feel of Central Coast Wine Country.  In fact, many weddings have been held on the property, a particular favorite venue for the locals.  That really says something when these are the same locals who have access to winery venues like Fess Parker's expansive estate.

    Onto the food:

Every meal starts with a plate of 4 different bread options: rosemary focaccia, jalapeno cornbread, cheddar onion biscuit and multi-grain wheat.  Each sublime, made in house and generously portioned.  They even give out the recipes in their Brother's Cookbook sold at the front desk.

The champagne, if you're so inclined to order it, is properly served with a tableside chilling stand. I love that kind of attention to detail. Your glasses, water or not, will never go empty since, despite it's down to earth decor, Brother's restaurant is committed to most attentive of service.

The menu is short, concise, focusing on 2 pages of the very best the Nichols have to offer, supplemented by mouthwatering daily specials.   I ordered the Roasted Chicken stuffed with Goat Cheese with Mashed Potatoes and an Herb Au Jus.  DH had the Prime Rib with Garlic Mashed Potatoes.

A Chef's Au Jus says a lot about their attitude towards food.  For some, it is just a requisite tossed together sauce to accompany Prime Rib.  For the best, it is a declaration of their understanding of the cooking arts.  It's an ode to the fundamentals of cuisine.  The Brother's Au Jus would make Escoffier tear up in pride. It's that good.

The mashed potatoes, fluffy, smooth and perfectly salted were transcendent.  The chicken? Deboned, perfectly herbed and roasted with the oozing goat cheese gilding the lily rather than overpowering the bird. And the accompanying side of squash and baby carrots?  So divine I'm on a personal search now for locally grown vegetables that can compare.

As the meal settled in, it was easy to understand why the restaurant was so crowded: simple food and an unrelenting dedication to doing every little detail perfectly no matter how small it seems.  A dining experience where the whole experience is exponentially larger than the sum of it's parts.

Of course, Alan Richman would be pleased to know that the Nichols' Bros are there every night cooking and ensuring their vision, taking a minute to happily sign cookbooks for the patrons that have the nerve to interrupt dinner service to ask.

It was my mother's birthday this past weekend so we decided to do something different and try Mattei's Tavern after reading some reviews.

I ordered the 12-oz prime rib but meant to order the grilled sirloin (yeah I don't know how I mess that up but I did.) I am not much of a prime rib fan, but this was really good! My husband, who is a huge prime rib fan, also tried it and he said that it is in his top 5. Everyone in the table ordered something different so I was able to get a little taste from everything. Everything was really tasty with a nice presentation. But I think the prime rib was the best dish. We finished dinner with the mud pie, sundae brownie, and a Mexican coffee. Now this is were I took out one star.

Who ever invented the Mexican coffee at Mattei's Tavern really needs to re-evaluate it. The whole party was Mexican so we ordered a couple Mexican coffees thinking it was regular coffee with cinnamon, "piloncillo," and kahlua. We were so wrong. It was actually tequila and kahlua mix in with coffee. Now I am all about drinking some tequila OR kahlua with my coffee but it was way too much for the cup that they give you. My own father who likes his tequila here and there even said that it was too strong and he couldn't even finish it. To be honest, it was almost offensive that they consider a Mexican coffee with all that tequila in it. Don't get me wrong I still finish mine but only after I added more coffee.

Other than the Mexican coffee everything was really good and I would consider going back again.. I will not order the Mexican coffee though.

What's the big deal?  We came here because it was recommended as a highlight and I don't understand why.

The food is good, don't get me wrong, but it's not special.  Heavy on the sauces and there's nothing adventurous about the menu.

The waitress-recommended bottle of wine was also mediocre.

Dessert was the best part -- they're generally huge and full of sugar, and it's hard to screw that up.

The ambiance is also very old school and very white.  I felt like I had stepped back into the fifties.   So if that's your thing, you'll love it here.

I've been spoiled with the Brother' Restaurant with dinner in the wine room and dinner at the chef's table. My parents eat here all the time, so much so that they got to the point where they realized that this was the only place they would eat then they would come to the area and they were coming pretty regularly so they had to branch out and sample some of the other establishment in the area. They will talk about the other places but they still speak fondly about the Brothers'.

First off, Pops raves about the steak, the Grilled Prime Filet with caramelized onion potato gratin with a stilton cheese-port wine sauce to be exact. He told my little lady about it and told her so many time we told him it was time for him to take her and let her make her own opinion. She agreed that it was the best, the Best, the BEST steak she had ever had. Beat Ruth's Criss with a bat until it was hamburger, Best.

If you're looking for a starter the Spicy Fried Calamari is a good table sharer. The Tuna Tartare with Avocado is good but could have been a little spicier and is enough to share with one other, maybe two if someone is in a giving mood.

The Roasted Chicken Breast Stuffed with Goat Cheese is really good, you gotta like the goat cheese though because it's goatish but if you are into the cheese flavor it's a good choice. The Grilled Pork Rib Chop is a thick ol chop of chop that will fill you up.

Save room for dessert. The Tahitian Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee will do you right, like really right. Their Brothers' Mud Pie with Kahlua-Caramel Sauce is good, def. big enough to share with someone. I have a thing for the chocolate pie crust, it's my fav. and this one is a good one.

Great wine list, great service, great location. Shame that it's probably closing in the next year or so. So get your butt in motion and get out here before it's too late and you are forced to hear people talk about, that steak that was the best friggin' steak ever and I wish I could get it again or what ever your dish of choice is.

Every local has nothing but wonderful things to say about this place and not wanting to insult them I made a trip after a long day of wine tasting.

The building is very old and an impressive local landmark, it is charming.

As others have said, the service is impeccable and the food is delicious. I had the trout and my date the chicken.

My one and only criticism is that after spending a day tasting and buying lots of amazing wine for under $40 a bottle I would have liked the very long wine list to have a larger selection of bottles for under $50. Even with the expected restaurant mark-up the Valley offers hundreds of great wines at that price point and it would have been nice to see them on the wine list.

Simply a delightful restaurant with lots of historic charm. The service is excellent with a wait staff that pays attention to details.

Our first dining experience was absolutely wonderful. The pork chop was cooked perfect, the tuna tar tar was delicious, and our special scallops were executed with precision.

This is definitely a place that deserves many return visits here in Los Olivos.

I always have good service here.  I usually order from the bar menu when here.  All though the dinner menu is great too.  Last time I was there, I tried the risotto and added chicken. I had no idea how good it was there.  Went well with a glass of wine I had that night too.  Love Mattie's, sad they are moving! Not that they are moving very far but love this location!

We never met these Brothers, but we love them any way.

Brothers' has to be The Los Olivos favorite. Everything we tried for their straightforward menu was excellent. After a great day of wine tasting on Grand street, we wondered up the road from Fess Parker Inn to sit down for a highly anticipated dinner.

We started with the Risotto, which had to be among the best I have EVER tried. It was Ottissimo. We then had the Lamb and Stuffed Chicken...both were amazing.

We'll definitely make Brothers' a part of any and every future trip to Los Olivos.

P.S. Ask for a table on the porch. It looked like the best place to sit.

Deeeeelicious steakhouse! We've been asking locals for recommendations all day, and this place kept coming up. After a long day of driving and wine tasting, we were exhausted and didn't have much of an appetite, so we got two apps and the top sirloin.

French Onion Soup -- too sweet, not enough gruyere, average
Chinese Chicken Salad - decent, nothing special, but it was refreshing
Top Sirloin entree - THE BEST! The meat was packed with flavor as well as the mashed potatoes and veggies. We enjoyed very bite.

The dessert special was a carrot cake with cream cheese ice cream and a glazed marshmallow shell encasing the whole thing. It was too sweet and too decadent (if that's possible..).

Our server (and the busboys) were so nice and down-to-earth with her recommendations of food and wine.

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE TOP SIRLOIN.

This place is as warm and friendly and delicious as it gets.  I cannot recall being at a restaurant that is so amazing on every level, from the moment you walk in the door until the moment you leave... Each and every person you encounter is polite and friendly and genuine and so happy... and that shows in the amazing food.  I am a bit sad that they will be leaving such a wonderful and historic space, but know they will have continued success in their new location.  I cannot wait to come back.  Thanks Danielle for getting us in... and Jeff for feeding us and everything else.  Top notch and class all the way.  This meal will be remembered.

We were a large table for 16, and with a reservation, Mattei's Tavern was happy to have us over for dinner. We had been wine tasting all afternoon, and I wasn't sure how hungry I was.

I like the old stage coach inn. The place is large, and with this group, it was a good move to put way in the back of a room. It looked to me that there were many rooms.

We brought wine, and our table ordered many items. I had Prime Rib. It was very tender, cooked medium rare, and quite tasty. I had the green salad to start.

The N Y steak and the salmon looked good too. No complaints from any of us on the quality of dinner.

The French onion soup looked good, but not tonight.

Good experience. I would like to return but with a table for 4 this time.
