*sniff* Can you smell that? Yes, that would be hype.

Everyone is talking about this place, which makes it suspect in my book. I can't do a pirouette in this town without running into someone talking about mead. I feel like I have fallen into hipster Medieval Times. Do they sell giant turkey legs too? And it is in the Short North, really? Why do you make me have to go there? This is going to be a disaster of epic proportions.

But damn, wrong again. This place is incredibly fabulous. Mead turns out to be pretty bad ass. You can get a relatively inexpensive sampler and the bartenders are attentive and explain everything with patience. You can tell they love working there. The cocktails are expensive, but heavy handed- and the one with the Apple Pie Mead (which is sweet like Wassail) and local whiskey... definitely a top 5 cocktail experience.

Booze excellent, service stellar, place is beautiful, especially the wooden bar... it is pricey if you spend too long here, but so well worth having to go to the Short North.

I do like being wrong... sometimes.

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't have noticed this place if I was randomly walking around the Short North one day, because it is literally off High Street, across from an empty dirt lot and located in what appears to be an old garage. While that may sound odd, it is an exceptionally awesome place.

I've had mead before, but through a friend who made it themselves. But I have never had mead like this. The place is laid-back and friendly, the staff is awesome (they even remember you if you stop by again), and the selection is full of variety. If you get a chance, ask for a sample of "Apple Pie." That stuff is fantastic.

I'm more of a cider/wine/mixer drinker, but mead is slowly becoming my favorite drink if I keep going back to this place.

While it is a chill environment, it can get a bit crowded pretty quick because of its size, and parking can be a bit of an issue. Other than that, it's cool and welcoming.

WARNING! watch out for the creepy bartender that will explain how he will "Pop your cherry". Overall the staff was great, but this person which will remain nameless was akward and creepy. Would not address me, as the purchaser, consistently stared down my girlfriend. I didn't say anything as i did not want to make me girlfriend feel more uncomfortable. We left shortly after we got our drinks.

I had very high hopes for this place. I was excited about their product. It's funny how one person can leave a bad taste in your mouth and it wasn't the mead. Simply put I will not be returning.

The building itself was small, as it is a converted service garage. If you look on Google Maps, Mike C. pointed out to me, you can see what the business looked like before the Brothers took it over. As such, it is a bit small and can get crowded quickly. The woodwork inside is gorgeous, but aesthetics can only get one so far, so I shall move on...

The Mead is the reason you come here. Hands down, best place in Columbus to get good mead. There is no question about that. I have tried a couple of their meads and I do like the Honey Oak and Wild Ohio. My fav is the Apple Pie. Here is where the train derails....

The Apple Pie is a seasonal mead. I understand that fact and I should just be happy that it exists in the world at all, right? When I bought my first bottle of it, it was a bit more than I typically spend, but I splurged and did not regret my purchase. When I went to the Meadery, they have a sign that they are sold out of the bottles, but will offer a $50 'vintage' 2010 soon OR I could purchase a 3 pack with 2 other bottles I did not want OR I could drive 30 min north and get a bottle myself. I was steamed, so I took the last option. As I drove all the way up north, out of my way, I bought 2 bottles of the big stuff for WAY more than I have ever spent on alcohol in one time in my entire life. UGh. I hate hype, but I hate the fact that I am in love with this Mead. Now- I don't want to open the bottles, because I dont want to run out!

Not only can Columbus boast amazing micro-distilleries and breweries, we also have bragging rights on Brothers Drake, a meadery located in Weinland Park. How many cities can claim their very own meadery? Especially one as locally conscious as Brothers Drake.

Brothers Drake occupies this beautiful little site - with the meadery in the back magically making the delicious nectar of life - and a bar up front. Beautiful exposed wood, dim lighting and art hanging salon style will make you cozy up to the bar and order glass after glass of this smooth sexy mead.

Brothers Drake makes mead to suit every style and palette. From uber sweet Apple Pie Mead to the Honey Oak, a dry traditional mead. My favorites include the Bergamot Blue and Scarlet Solstice. Both a semi-dry with the Bergamot Blue having notes of blueberries and the Scarlet Solstice hinting at red berries. The Apple Pie alone is too sweet for me, but combine it with OYO Whiskey and you've got a hell of a great cocktail. The bar at Brothers Drake uses only local brews and spirits, yet another in a long list of reasons to visit Brothers Drake Mead.

If you're looking for a fun and different bar atmosphere, this is the place.  Mead, while not well known, is delicious.  There are several varieties ranging from dry to sweet, and each one I have tried has a very different, but always wonderful, taste.  The atmosphere is great here too, with a rotating selection of local art and live music on the weekends.  The staff is friendly, and is more than happy to educate its customers on mead.  The mixed drinks, often made with OYO from next door and mead, are wonderful, and there are even a few tasty beers.  Nice atmosphere, terrific product.  Come early, as seating is somewhat limited.

I'm so glad i found the bros drake and will be returning every chance i get!

No longer do I have to wait for the Ren Faire to get my fix for the sweet stuff; Brothers Drake has brought mead consciousness to Columbus and opened one of the best new venues around all in one fell swoop. This place is a must-visit for anyone who is ignorant of the deeper side of mead culture, as I was until I taste the amazing variety of meads coming out of this place.

Besides a bevy of wonderful mead varieties, Brothers Drank can also boast of their AMAZING staff as well as the absolutely delightful venue their space provides. I have been to multiple parties and gallery openings at their storefront and every one has been a huge success. If you can, get a tour of the production side of things from one of the workers- they are all friendly, knowledgeable, and  passionate about what they do- not only in terms of making mead, but in terms of supporting the local community and keeping their business in line with the general theme of All Things Local.

The prices might seem a bit steep for a bar, but mead is wholly worth the price point- to say nothing of these particular meads, which are far and away the best I have personally ever tasted. Whether I'm just coming in for a drink or coming to a planned event/party, I know I'm in for GREAT tasting booze, friendly service, and a quirky and fun little physical space.

I can't say enough good things about Brothers Drake! I literally have not one complaint, although I wish I did just to round out this review. So I challenge you to go here for yourself and find fault- my money is on the fact that even if you do, it will be minor compared to all the delights in store.

Finally a place in Columbus to get good mead! I have had pretty much every variety that they offer (yes I love mead) and have never been disappointed. If I had to pick a favorite I would go with the Honey Oak or Wild Ohio. The Hopped Traditional is also excellent. In addition, they offer some pretty killer cocktails with all local spirits. Try the Apple Pie mead plus OYO whiskey, seriously just do it!

Their meadery itself is a beautifully renovated little place with some excellent woodwork throughout. They usually showcase some sort of local artwork, especially around gallery hop.

I really like that they are partial to local ingredients and drinks at BD. The owners are friendly and will gladly chat it up with you about mead or life in general. We even got taken on an impromptu tour of the production works. Sure the bottles are a little pricey, about the cost of a good bottle of wine, but you get what you pay for and you know that you are supporting local business and culture. Buy mead, drink mead, enjoy the special things in life.

When I enter Brothers Drake, I feel like I am entering another city.  This is definitely a hipper side of Columbus!  We all know Columbus is awesome (those of us who live there), but this is where I like to take my out-of-towners to show them something cool and different that Columbus can brag about.  Mead is something I had been unfamiliar with (outside of Beowulf) until a Yelp Elite event introduced me to the venue.  Since then, I can't stop myself from going back.

Staff is awesome. The building is a cool space (especially when you factor in the live music often happening and the mood lighting) and the drinks are fantastic.  I'm a Honey Oak girl myself, but try the flight if you want to try a lot of meads for not a whole lot of money.  Overall, definitely a place to try if you live in Columbus and a place to visit if you're taking Columbus in temporarily.

After reading about Brother's Drake in local food mags and blogs, we finally found time to stop by for a post-dinner drink. It was love at first sip of the corner punch, the recipe for which changes weekly. We've tried several of the cocktails made with local spirits and their mead, although we have yet to try too many of the meads straight.
I also really enjoyed the atmosphere/vibe, along with the friendly employees and live music. We've already been back multiple times (once for an "just-two-drinks-early-night" that turned into a fun late night making work a struggle the next day), and it's quickly becoming one of our go-to bars, and a place we'll bring out-of-town guests for something uniquely Columbus.

Brothers Drake brings something really unique to Columbus.  I had never had mead before going there, and while it will probably never be my go to drink, I love the creativity that goes into everything Brothers Drake makes.  They're also the only place in Columbus that has Jackie O's on tap, which is worth all the stars to this OU grad.

I always go to Brothers Drake on Gallery Hop nights, because it's the perfect place to  relax for a bit and get lost in good conversation.  They often have live bands playing that aren't the standard fare, and interesting art covers the walls.

I heart Brothers Drake. Big time.

Who knew this place even existed? Okay, apparently some people did. But not me! I live within walking distance and didn't have a clue about it until the Halloween Yelp event. Thanks, Christina, for introducing me to this delightful spot!

Brothers Drake is a Meadery. And in case you don't know - mead is wine made from honey. And oh em gee does it taste delicious!

During the Yelp event, the owners gave us a tour of Brothers Drake, and these folks are the real deal. Seriously, they are amazing, friendly people who are insanely passionate about their business. We were able to try almost all the meads, and they all tasted wonderful. But the clear stand-out to me was the apple pie mead. We're talking amazing shiz, y'all. I have a bottle of it at home just waiting for the right occasion! (It's a bit pricey for just everyday drinking - about $30 a bottle.)

So, after our tour, I couldn't really get that mead outta my head, so we went back with some friends a couple of weeks later on a Saturday night. The bar is dark and sultry, but the friendly staff keep it light and upbeat. And they were having live music the night we went! But the highlight of the evening was my drink - apple pie mead + OYO whiskey! Oh. Holy. Crap. This was one of the Top 5 best drinks I've ever had! But be careful - more than one can knock you on your ass!

Tip:  Be careful where you park! The tow trucks are crazy here!

This place is an absolute gem! Of course, the number one attraction is the mead. I had tried it on a few occasions where they were gracious enough to offer tastings at Yelp events.

Oddly enough, I didn't think much of it until our Halloween Yelp event where we were given a tasting flight accompanied by a tour. Brother's Drake is the WHOLE package. For some reason, the mead tasted great that night and once we got the story behind their business, you can't help but love it. If you don't drink, you might become a drinker just to support them. So, from that point, I knew I wanted to come back to Brother's Drake for a relaxing evening drink.

We went this past Saturday at about 6. It wasn't busy, we were warmly welcomed and served promptly. I ordered Pillow Talk with notes of Lavender and Chamomile. My boy friend and our two other friends ordered the Courtland consisting of Apple Pie mead (amazing on it's own) and OYO Whiskey made right next door. At $10 a pop, it was still well received. Quality trumps price here.

The best part is the bar has great energy, friendly, inviting, chill. It's a place you can definitely hangout at and feel like family. I also highly recommend you take home a bottle of Apple Pie for Thanksgiving. Epic!

At a tasting dinner sponsored byBrothers Drake Meade. Unexpectedly wonderful. I haas no previous experience with Meade and expected an overly sweet concoction that w tolerable.

I'm very pleased to say it is wonderful, flavorful, and was beautifully  paired with the dishes that Chef Michael prepared at Black Creek Bistro.

I also love that this is a Columbus based company making product specifically for this market.

If you have not tried meade or if you're remotely curious you should check it out.

Hanging out listening to great jazz and checking out the new drinks. They got their liquor license and there are some really nice items.

Love the one they call the "Wild sweet Annie."

I wasn't interested in going to a Meadery, but I stopped in with a friend. This place is way more interesting than I'd thought it would be, and it turns out fresh mead is much less syrupy than what you'd get in a store: very nice. The first time I went it was predictably bourge-y. The second time I went it was for the Arts Center afterparty, with a band playing, and the place was really hopping! Overall I'm really impressed; good product, good space, etc. They should maybe put a little more work into creating the kind of "accessible" atmosphere they seem to want to create, but this is a place I'll recommend to friends.

I came here to start off my Gallery Hop night with a mead tasting.  I split a tasting with a friend (5 samples of mead) and still was pleasantly buzzed afterwards.  A fantastic way to start galler hop! :)  The Bergamot Blue was one of my favorites.  The blueberry and bergamot flower flavors were amazing with the sweetness of the honey.

I purchased a bottle of the Bergamot Blue and was disappointed when the cork exploded out of the bottle upon opening it and found that the mead did not taste anything like it did at the meadery.  The honey in mead is naturally antiseptic and therefore mead usually does not need added sulfites to prevent over fermentation.

I brought the bottle back on a day they were not officially open. I had forgotten they were only open on Weds through the weekend.  I ran up to the door  in hopes someone could help me. (Picture a crazy looking girl with a half empty bottle of alcohol running up to their storefront and peering through the door).  Luckily the owner and others were there and waved me in.  They gave me a new bottle without hesitation or request of a receipt.  This problem with the over fermentation was only with the second batch of Bergamot Blue.    They also gave me a small bottle of their Wild Ohio mead for the inconvenience.  Excellent customer service!  I'll be drinkin their mead for a long time to come!

I've had a couple brief experiences here, plus the opportunity to meet the owners/managers at a Yelp event. I have to say I'm very impressed both with the product and with the company as a whole.

    What's so good about BD?
The owners have a steadfast commitment to being a local business and working with other local businesses.
They have great customer service and seem really proud of their products.
    The mead is damn tasty!

    What's bad?
I can't afford to buy a bottle of everything.

So far, I've had the opportunity to taste Bergamot Blue, Apple Pie, and Pillow Talk. I loved all three and I'm looking forward to trying more. Can't wait to show up  for another tasting sometime soon!

I love the garage door windows. While I'm not a mead drinker, I the decor and atmosphere of the establishment. The chalkboards, white walls, large windows, a separate bar area from the stage, an open flow of conversation. And the water? The small "milk jug" looking containers it's served in totally won my favor. I've noticed they seem to have a solid variety of bands that play here, and good music always has my heart.

Since I was, once again, reminded of how awesome BDM is at the Yelp Masquerade I figured it was finally time to finish this review that's been sitting in my box for too long:

We went to Brother's Drake one Friday night to see a friend's band play and as a music venue I really didn't appreciate it.
Fact: I'm a music snob and I knew about them when they were still "indy."
Truth: The acoustics in there are harsh.  So much so that it sounds like two bands are playing at once.  Also, there's not a lot of room to distance yourself from the sound, so bring earplugs if you're going to listen to a live band here.  I'm not joking on this one, my ears were actually ringing/buzzing for hours and my hearing was noticeably damaged the next day or two.  Maybe I'm getting too old, but I've gone to so many concerts and love to listen to so much music that I really want my hearing to be around 50 years from now when the heads of the Beastie Boys are doing concerts Futrama style.

That didn't really start like a 5 star review did it?  Surprise! For everything mead/bar related this place is tits!
The flavors vary so greatly that I'm sure anyone can find a flavor they like. Some is very close to light wine and is really sweet while others feel heavier like a good bourbon. Trust me: if you drink (which you probably do since you're reading a bar review) you'll find something tasty for you here.

Inside the decor is nice and just a little towards the swanky side with lots of local art hanging on the walls which fits their motto: "buy, make & sell, local." Yep, that's right. That flagon of mead you quaffed whilst  spying the busty wench a few stools down is all made with local ingredients, which gets my hippy juices flowing.

The best part about coming here (beside the mead, of course): the people. As a home brewer I was fascinated with the entire process and everything that goes into making mead. I talked to everyone behind the bar about the whole process, what to look for, how to make it, why it's special, and was even led on a tour by Woody who answered all of my 1 billion questions. Very cool! (BTW I'm pretty sure anyone can get the tour if you ask).

Price- bottles were 30ish dollars and worth every penny. If that sounds too much for you because you're ultimate goal is to get wasted then go get a 30-pack of PBR for 15 bucks you dirty hipster; this stuff is meant to be enjoyed. I think the best idea here is to go in and get a flight so you can get a sense of the gamut of flavors mead has to offer, then pick a bottle of your favorite to take to share with friends a show off your tasty new find.

Dropped by here during Gallery Hop this past weekend for a tasting. Flight of five was $10.  When they say "Drink Of The Gods," I'll tell you now... they are not kidding.

Best tastes of the night? Probably the VO and the Apple Pie. Yes, Apple Pie... and it tastes very much like its namesake... no kidding.

The staff is terrific and knowledgeable. They take the time to explain the process of making mead, and pointing out the various qualities of these beverages that drinkers may notice or should look for as they taste.

This is such a fun place to visit on a cold, rainy Saturday night... or pretty much any night in any weather. Come down and enjoy.

We had some friends in from out of town, so we took them to Brothers Drake. I agree with the reviewer that said this is a good place to show the hip side of Columbus to out of towners. The drink menu has a great balance of interesting/fun and traditional. All the drinks I tried highlighted the unique flavors of their outstanding mead and did not try to distract from it. Plus, I did a shot of habanero-infused Wild Ohio and it nearly burned my throat out from delicious fieriness!! The staff is friendly, and they do the cool iPad-as-cash-register thing. Only downside for me was the live music on the particular night we were there. I found it annoying, but I'm sure other bands are much better to listen to. Brothers Drake is definitely a unique, fun place to show the cool side of our fair city.

With new digs in the Short North, I can see this as a frequent stop.

I think I am more partial to the tasting flights as opposed to committing to a bottle.  The variety is phenomenal.

I love the lavender-chamomile "Pillow Talk", if I remember the ingredients correctly, and the bergamot blue.  I guess I like the uniqueness of the herbal ingredients.

It's a bit of a cost commitment at $25 a bottle, but worth it if you budget or for special occasions.

I heard tell they are applying for a patio permit.  Yes please!  I could see myself with a sun hat watching High Street traffic and sippin' on some mead on a hot sunny afternoon.

Came in today for their art show before gallery hop. I had never had mead before (well, I had some not-so-great homebrew before, but I'm not counting that).

Let me say, mead is fantastic. Well, at least these meads. So delicious! And not all of it is super-sweet (although some of it is). I really enjoyed the Southern Belle, which was a traditional-style semi-sweet mead. It was not overwhelmingly sweet, and more complex than I would have imagined. I also had a glass of their Bergamot Blue, which is made with blueberries and bergamot flowers. It was less sweet than the Southern Belle, and also very good. I also tried a small amount of another which was dry and made with raspberries which didn't have as much of a finish or complexity of the others, but was more refreshing (due to the dryness, probably).

The people who worked here also seemed really nice, even though they were all obviously stressed because it was completely swamped. They had laid out a nice spread of snacks, which were of way higher quality than I expected. I will say that the service was a little slow, but I understand they were overloaded.

First off, I'm a beer snob. I've done beer tours, and I pretty much only drink imported brews. I won't get near anything with "bud" "light" "coors" or "miller" in the name unless it's well past last call, and probably not even then. When it comes to wine though, I'll drink anything and everything, from a box, bottle, or glass jar. And that's just a little about my drinking habits.
So I went into a tasting and tour at Brothers Drake last night with a group of friends having no idea what mead was besides what people drink at the Renaissance festival, which really wasn't my scene. So I wasn't expecting to be impressed. I'm pretty sure "tastings" are just a classy excuse to get drunk, and I'm not really used to sipping drinks. But this stuff you definitely have to sip. The flavor is strong, and in some not so great. But it's interesting. It all looks like wine, and some tastes like beer. I couldn't drink mead with the volume or frequency that I drink wine and beer, but I don't hate it. Plus it's expensive. My favorite was the apple pie something or other that is evidently a fall thing. It was sweet and actually tasted like cider.
The best part of Brothers Drake was the staff. They were friendly, courteous, and very informative. Our tour was really informal, with plenty of questions and more tastings, and I was surprised to learn the entire process takes place in one room that kind of looks like a garage. All of their ingredients are local, and even the art on the walls is by local artists. Not going to be my weekly hangout, but definitely a place worth checking out.

Finally went to the new location.  Parking is a bear, so be careful.  The building is much bigger, in front and in their production area.  Tastings are just as much fun as before, and now they can have parties and bands.  The mead, a different assortment than on my last visits, is still great.  I still think I like the simplest meads best (Wild Ohio, I think this one was,) but they are all good and there's a range of flavors.  The berry Scarlet Solstice, and the Hopped Traditional were excellent.  Yes, hops.  They work with the mead, somehow.

I hesitate to write this review because I want to keep this place all to myself but I figured the generous thing to do would be to share this place with others.  Brothers Drake introduced me to mead and I thank them for it.  The mead is delicious.  Apple Pie was the best of the three meads I had.  The atmosphere is inviting and the decor is unique.  I was fortunate enough to get a tour at my first visit and I was pleased to learn that Brothers Drake is locally driven.  (All the ingredients and supplies are from local vendors and they only distribute locally.)  I'm new to Columbus and not only will I be returning but Brothers Drake has now made the list of places my friends "must see" when they visit.

Okay, so I basically had the time of my life here today.  Silly me didnt realize they weren't open but they greeted me like an old friend anyway.(thanks, Eric!) I found out they do tours and quite honestly, I like what they stand for: local everything. From the honey in the mead to the paintings on the wall. If you live in the columbus area and enjoy a good glass of wine (mead in their case!) there is no excuse for you not to support them.  They literally have something for everyone. As a beer lover, Eric talked about a "hopped up" mead.  Gave it a go and boom. Amazing. Mead has something like 13% abv but there isnt that burn like youd see in other beverages.  I'll be back and I genuinely hope you'll stop in as well.

Friends brought over a bottle of Bergamot Blue honey wine (mead) and I LOVED it.  The fact that it was made here in Seabus appealed to me, and I plan on buying another bottle the next time a special occassion presents itself.  At $26/bottle it will have to be a bit special.  You can pick this up lots of places according to their website, including Clintonville mainstays Palmers and Weilands.

Surprisingly sophisticated, amazingly complex notes. My favorite is Pillow Talk, a dry chamomile lavender mead that would pair beautifully with seafood, especially scallops. Great people, friendly, and really know their stuff about mead.

My parents were in town for a visit and we opted for an early dinner to scope out Milestone 229.  We were looking for something else to do before calling it a night and found ourselves at the door to Brothers Drake Meadery.  What a great decision!  The four of us decided we'd try out the flight which includes 5 different selections for $15.  The staff was friendly and laid back.  The interior design was equally laid back, yet well thought out...a mixture of contemporary concrete and art blended with old wooden doors and reclaimed windows to see into the brewing areas.  The mead itself really can't be compared to anything else I've ever tasted.  In the first glass all I could taste was yeast so I wasn't overly thrilled (it was really the only one I wasn't a fan of).  There was another one that included berries that was yummy and the one that surprised me most included lavender and chamomile. All in all it was a great experience and we are already recommending the experience to our friends.
