Omaha is known for its classic old-school steakhouses.  Brother Sebastian's is one of them.  Most Omahans have a favorite local steakhouse.  Each steakhouse has a loyal cult following that claims their steakhouse is supreme.

What Brother Sebastian's has going for it is a unique atmosphere; its a steakhouse inside a faux friary.  Besides being known for their steaks, Brother Sebastian's serves an excellent prime rib.

    Pros:
    Kitschy Atmosphere
    Prime Rib (w/ Au Jus)
    Salad Bar
    Service
    Unique Menu (Frog Legs anyone?)

    Cons:
    Price
    Kitschy Atmosphere (It's really dark!)
Some of the entrees are fair

Spoiled by my insatiable appetite for moo, I went on a hunt for a steakhouse.  What else?  Since I was in this beautiful land of milk and honey, why not eat the animal that gave me the milk, Honey?

Since I already toured the beautiful town of Lincoln the previous night, I decided to venture out to Omaha.  It was an hour drive out, but what the hell I had a rental car with a full tank of gas and I haven't gone anywhere.  Upon first pulling into downtown Omaha, I realized what I wasn't missing.  Ghetto.  Wow at least I saw a color other than white today.

I somehow ended up at some mall and walked into a restaurant which I thought served steak.  Nope.  I asked the cute young bartender where I can get a nice steak that won't break the bank.  She told me about Brother Sebastian's where you can get a NY steak stuffed with shrimp and crab meat.  Mmmmm sounded so damn good I had to make the drive.

When I first pulled up, I thought it was some monastery.  There was no windows and some chanting music was playing by the big wooden doors.  This is getting scary.  Here's a Chinese boy in a hillbilly town and I can easily disappear and no one will know where to find me.  Luckily, the first person I saw wasn't wearing a grim reaper outfit.  Whew. I didn't have to bust out my Jackie Chan moves today.  I kept my hands out of my pocket just in case.

I looked over the menu but was pretty set on eating what Daisy Duke enticed me with over at the other joint.  I ordered it medium rare since there doesn't seem to be a single steakhouse that can cook a steak well done without drying it out.

The salad bar was self-serve which I loved.  I can fetch me whatever the hell I wanted as much as I wanted.  Everything looked fresh, but there wasn't a whole lot of selection and was missing green bell peppers, alfalfa sprouts, green onion, sunflower seeds, brocolli, and real bacon bits.  Eh whatever.  I came here for the steak anyways.

When the steak came out, it looked a bit plain.  By that, I mean there was no seasoning on it and wasn't grilled enough since it seemed pretty colorless still.  I sliced into it and there was a decent amount of the crab and shrimp in it, but totally lacked flavor.  Usually when a restaurant serves A1, it means the meat sucks ass.  Tonight I was so tempted to ask for A1 but I refrained.  Instead I washed down every flavorless bite with some Jamaican beer.  Yah-man.  If only I was in the Tropics instead of this Monastery.  After force-feeding myself with the stuffed part of the steak, I left the ends behind.  It was just not worth knawing on something so flavorless.  Surf and turf is always yummy, but I guess in this case it shouldn't be in the same bite and Brother Sebastian better ask Father Serra to help him in the kitchen cuz Mother Teresa didn't teach him well.

I am vegetarian, but wanted to take my family somewhere where they could eat Omaha steak while they were in town.

This was about a year ago and before I had gotten the hang of online reviews- so I had ended up here on recommendation from a friend living in Omaha. To be blunt- I was expecting a classier place and better food. The decor was borderline farm/medival and not trendy in the least. There was a salad bar, and also the place was set up like a maze! I could see some people liking this type of experience but I was so disappointed because I had wanted to take my family somewhere a lot nicer and classier (ie something like the boiling room or the grey plume, but with steak!).

That said with the cons, there was a lot of parking, and the wait staff was friendly. The place was easy to find, and near the freeway. The food was medicore, and not really worth the price. My dad and a few friends were ok with their steaks, but my NYC/LA savy brother was more than disappointed.

Probably not a place i would try again because it does not match my tastes in food or atmosphere. Did i mention the uniforms that they wear there? Our waiter could have been in seminary school.

My boyfriend and I almost didn't keep our reservation--the monastic music coming from the restaurant scared us a little. My mind was suddenly filled with thoughts of "where am I?" and "why couldn't we go to Fleming's again?"

Thank goodness, the inside wasn't as intimidating, medieval, or sacrosanct--I would be able to eat my cow guilt-free. We had the Escargot ($6.95), which were perfect. This was my boyfriend's first taste of snails, and I'm happy it was a good one--this only means we'll be visiting more French restaurants! The Lobster Bisque ($5.25), on the other hand, was just ok--my college's food court did a better version with imitation crab. Yikes but yes.

As for the main attraction, my boyfriend had the Filet Sebastian ($33.95) and I had the Filet Oskar ($28.50). Both were dressed up with  extras--it cost us a lot of money for me to figure out I like my steak simple (i.e. salt, pepper, butter). The crabmeat, asparagus, and hollandaise sauce seemed like it was just there to cover a not-so-prime piece of meat.

The best thing about Brother Sebastian's is the salad bar. The reddish dressing is out of this world; it looked like marinara but tasted like cranberries. I loved it with my spinach salad and french fries. I won't come back just for that, but it has definitely inspired me make my own dressings at home.

Brother Sebastian's offers a unique perspective on a steak house. And with menu items like frog's legs and baked alaska it definitely keeps you guessing. Unfortunately I wasn't overly impressed with the quality of the food. And because that's one of the main requirements for me to repeat-visit a restaurant, I probably won't be going back on my own accord.

Still, it's a classic local steak house that's worth a try at least.  Everyone's taste is obviously a little bit different, the over 60 crowd that was a majority of the clientèle while we dined seemed to be big fans.

The way that you look at a restaurant is a function of the event. I am in town on business and was looking for a good steak in quiet surroundings, not too romantic as I didn't have The Rodeo Queen with me and that would have detracted from the experience. Brother Sebastian's was what the Vortex had in store for me - just exactly what I was looking for.

When I dine alone I tend to eat at the bar. We haven't graduated to the singles tables that I have found in Europe and the bar is the closest thing. Eric the bartender was pleasant enough and was quick to offer up samples of the Cabs by the glass without being asked - a nice beginning although the wines themselves were adequate, if not spectacular.

While others were put off by the Gregorian chanting at the door I found them a nice touch. It is a clever idea and I appreciate clever.

The highlight was the Prime Rib. I had the Prime Rib Benedictine and the meat was so tender that I could "cut it with the backside of the knife," Erick's way of describing it earlier. He was right. The sides were adequate and the trip to the salad bar was a step back in time.

All in all this is an interesting place and I will probably go again. I will find another place for date night, however, should I return.

Salad was from your typical salad bar.

My steak was average and the Chicken wrapped asparagus was greasy.

Service was excellent for take out.

I've only been here once.  I'll probably go back, but...

I think I was expecting a nicer place.  The building and atmosphere is pretty nice, they have big comfey leather chairs and internal rooms that control the noise well.  But they do have some basic maintenance and decorating issues that you notice while you wait for your food.  Bookshelves hold a bunch of books, unfortunately a number of them hang off the shelf since they are too large, the base from a light fixture hangs from the chain holding up the 1970's fake candelabra, etc.  They kind of have a "monk" theme, but the "robes" the staff wear are really more like slightly long hooded sweatshirts...

The food was pretty good, but service was a bit slow.  The food was priced very well, and while they aren't really set up for little kids they accomodated my 2 year old daughter pretty well.

While the prime rib sandwich was very good, I really wish that they would have taken more care in trimming the meat.  You have to expect some fat on prime rib, but when you make it into a sandwich you should trim it pretty well.

They have a pretty nice salad bar.

I'd probably go here for a business or casual lunch.  It's also probably a busy place around prom night.

Had an excellent dinner here a few weeks ago. The salad bar was above average, and I had the opportunity to sample both the New York strip and the prime rib.

The strip came with a pepper sauce, (I usually don't like anything on my steak but a little butter) but it was fantastic. The steak was thick, and the sauce was fantastic.

I believe it's pretty hard to mess up prime rib, but theirs was giant, and cooked to near perfection. Both meals came with potatoes, pasta, bread, and salad, which made it impossible to finish the main course. All in all, I definitely recommend this place.

Very good ribeye steak.  Salad bar was good with many items from which to choose.  My friend had prime rib and thought it was great.  Wait staff excellent.  We had great service.  Management came by to see if we were enjoying our meal.  Go there!

Some of the worst service I've ever had. The food is expensive, low quality, and utterly unsatisfactory.

It's been a while since I visited here, but from what I've heard, nothing much has changed.
I liked the interior, and the booth was comfortable and quiet. The atmosphere gave it the 2 stars instead of one.
Then there's the food. We had the Chateaubriand. The sauce was so obviously out of a can or pouch it was embarrassing. The veggies were out of a can and cooked into oblivion. The chateau, while medium rare as ordered, was badly charred on the outside like they cooked it all the way on the grill instead of marking it and finishing it in the oven. (that's how it usually is done in restaurants, for just this reason). It was tender, but it didn't have much flavor other then burnt.
The service. It was made clear by the waiter's total indifference that he didn't care about us at all. He made three trips to our table: to seat us, bring our food (which took forever), and to bring the check. Someone else brought the bread. Every time he acted like he wanted to make a noose out of the rope around his waist and put it around his neck. Seriously, think about another line of work.
I won't come here again. Too bad cause it does have some charm.
