    Brother Juniper's, oh lord!

This was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had.

I was just visiting Memphis for the weekend, so I had to stop in on a Saturday morning. I've heard it gets crazy busy on the weekends, so I called ahead, they don't take reservations for parties less than 5, but we had a table waiting for us right when we walked in.. awesome.

I had the 'Pacific Northwest' open faced omelette- spinach, tomatoes, feta, cheddar, onions, mushrooms on top of a bed of homefries, on top of an omelette. It was served with a cup of cheese grits (i got them loaded- so covered in bacon, onions and sour cream), and rye toast. The omelette was made perfectly, all of the flavors mixed really well. The spinach wasn't too wilted, the mushrooms weren't overcooked, the sour cream was cold, and the cheese was plentiful (I'm from Wisconsin, trust me, there was a lot of cheese on there.)  Now, I've never had grits before.. but.. what?! why don't we have grits up in Wisconsin?! they. were. a m a z i n g. so good. so cheesy.

My dining partner had the biscuits and gravy with a bowl of grits. It was delicious, and HUGE.

Oh yeah, their house coffee is great. (And they sell it by the pound, FYI.) I had 4 mugs of coffee with my breakfast. Our waitress, (Nicki?) was totally on top of it, even with every table full in the restaurant.

Bonus Points:: They have homemade hot sauces at each table, which are also for sale in the waiting area. The louisiana chipotle is AWESOME. Perfect for sprinklin' on home fries and eggs.

    Brother Juniper's - So good.

Came here for breakfast on a weekday and sat at the counter.

Service was excellent, they were friendly, attentive and available. I liked chilling at the counter, easy to meld in as a solo diner.

Ordered the eggs and toast combo, which I thought would be a small portion of food, but his is the south, so everything is huge. The eggs were perfectly cooked, just how I like them. The hash browns I found a bit too salty, but they were otherwise tasty, probably because they were cooked in a massive amount of butter!

I had an iced soy latte. It was served in one of those plastic restaurant cups. Fail. Please serve me it in a glass. Oh well. Maybe they don't have real glass. Fine.

You take your check up front and pay there.

Overall happy with the food, price and service.

I don't get it. Everyone speaks so highly of Brother Juniper, and I just don't get it. I hear there is normally a line to get in, but i outsmarted the city: I went on Wednesday. It was empty. Even so, the parking lot is a nightmare. The store is located close to the University of Memphis and  can be congested, especially at busier times.

The staff might be some of the friendliest people I've ever met. When i entered, Patrick literally sprinted from the counter, and offered every polite greeting and welcome I've ever heard. Hell, he even held my hand as he escorted me to the table (kidding). I decided to eat at the bar since I was alone. The menu is expansive, with a solid array of breakfast items available. I heard that the open-faced omelets where amazing, so that's where i focused. I finally decide on the Hungry Tiger. It's cause I'm fat.  The amount of food is undeniably massive. The omelet comes with a heap of stuff on it, a huge cup of cheese grits, and a biscuit. The grits were delicious, and piping hot. I'm glad no angry woman was close by to throw them in my face (shout-out to Al Green!) The omelet itself was...lacking. With the major exception of the home fries, which were delicious, the omelet  and most of the ingredients were boring, or overcooked.

Perhaps, I made the classic mistake of ordering right before close. Or maybe Brother Juniper's suffers from the classic problem of being over-hyped and underwhelming. Either way, when i need a breakfast fix in the future, I'll stick to- gasp- IHOP.

Brother Juniper's...where do I start? I had heard many great things about this restaurant so today I decided it was high time to check it out.

It is the textbook definition of a hole in the wall. It's nestled by Tiger bookstore and a laundromat. It's a converted cottage and when you walk inside, the dining area is quite small. There's a diner type bar as well. It's a very homey atmosphere. The coffee is delicious and the mismatched cups add to the atmosphere.

I had heard several suggestions on what to try, so I was quite indecisive. I finally settled on the Mexican omelette with home fries and a biscuit.

    Oh my.

The omelette was stuffed with black beans, sour cream, cheddar cheese, green onions and chorizo. The home fries were by far the best I've ever had. I did sample the cheese grits and although I'm not a fan of grits, they were great. The biscuit came with their homemade preserves which were great.

All in all a great experience. We went on a weekday and had no wait. Service was just as great as the food. I will definitely be back.

Run, don't walk here for breakfast!  And be prepared for the best food coma of your life.  The omelet's are huge - 3 eggs.  The Denver Omelet is my favorite, and it's so delicious that I would eat anything this place offers.  The home fries are great, the biscuits are great... This is one of the best breakfasts I've ever had, and one of my favorite places to eat in Memphis.  I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone.  The staff is friendly and attentive.  Expect a wait for a table, especially on a weekend, but your food will come out quickly.  This place is best!

Brother Junipers seems to be a Memphis mainstay, located at the U of M.  It's a tiny little cottege-esque slice of heaven.  It's always packed.  I don't think I've ever been to BJ's (as I call it, because I'm mature, but we've covered that previously) when there hasn't been a wait.  However, I'll gladly wait.

The menu has all sorts of omelets and even Rachel Ray's favorite open faced omelet, San Diegan, which was featured on her $40.00 a day show.  I seem to always order the Spanakopita omelet.  It's a spinach and feta omelet.  Oh, I'm having a craving just thinking about it!

When you're in Brother Junipers, it's busy.  Dishes are clanging together and servers are rushing around, but it never really bothers me.  The coffee is always served in mismatched coffee mugs, which gives me a feeling of being a guest in someone's home.

If you don't mind a little wait or don't miss having a bloody mary or mimosa at brunch, this is your place!

Off the plane and time to kill. Brother Juniper's was a very good find.

    OPEN FACE OMELETS!

Almost every table had ordered one, so we knew it was the item to get.

    Momma Lil's Special: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Home fries, roasted peppers, spinach, mushrooms & fresh smoked salmon. Loved all the veggies. The salmon was delish.

    The Desperado: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Black beans, salsa, avocado, cheese, tomato & sour cream. Super hearty!

    CHEESY GRITS!

As if the omelets were not delicious enough, the cheesy grits were amazing! Couldn't stop eating it!

Great food. Friendly service. Can't go wrong with Brother Juniper's!

Great breakfast, with an eclectic menu.  Be prepared to wait and wait, but it is worth the wait.  Everything I have ever had there was good - perfectly cooked and seasoned, generous portions, and plenty of flavor (layers of flavors - nothing one note).   Breads and coffee are excellent.  Biscuits were good.  TMy basic country breakfast (eggs over easy, country sausage, biscuits, and gravy) is good.

Brother Juniper you're killing me man! For real! I have been trying to get into this place for months now to try the breakfast to no avail.  That's because I was trying like mad to get in here on a weekend.  Never gonna happen for this girl.  I cannot get outta my bed that early on a Saturday or Sunday, just not going to happen. I refuse to wait an hour or more for food when I'm starving and smelling other folks breakfasty goodness.  Yes, I'm the jealous type.

Finally had the keen idea to head here on a weekday for LUNCH! I have beat the system! *insert evil laugh here*  I promptly ordered the San Diegan as I've heard nothing but rave reviews about it.  Fellow yelpers, I am here to tell you I can still taste this dish as I sit here and type two days later.  I am still craving the crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, fresh sour cream and those damn mouthwatering portabella mushrooms.  Oh Ma Gahd!  Insanity I tell you.  The eggs were light and fluffy and the perfect bed for all that yummy goodness to mingle and hang out on top.  I don't know how they do it, nor do I care to- it's freaking delicious.

My husband had a menu item called mama's something or other (not listed on their online menu) with smoked salmon, spinach, portabellas, bacon, feta and some other crap nestled in there.  It too was marvelous.  I couldn't get over how fresh the spinach was and all the ingredients worked well together- despite my protesting upon his choosing that perhaps it was a tad bit overkill.

The grits? Meh.  The biscuits? Had better.  The service?  Okay- nothing spectacular.  The decor?  Lacking. Forget all that nonsense though.  It's the omelets that make this place the bomb.

I guess the joke's on me now. I didn't "beat the system."  Nope.  I fell right into the trap.  I have to go back here.  Soon.

This place was BA! There were so many choices on the menu that I wanted to try but I ended up going with the special gyro on pita and it was scrumptious. The home fries were equally as delicious. The wife had the San Diegan opened faced omelet. It consisted of mushrooms, bacon, cheese, sour cream, home fries, and green onions. Of course I had to try it and it was pretty dang good as well. I'm pretty sure that this place has become our new favorite brunch spot in town.

It came with a warm biscuit, and cheesy grits. the grits were very cheesy, and a huge bowl! We also shared a pancake, which was fluffy, delicious and served with REAL Maple Syrup!

It's simple here: Order one of their open face omelets. You won't be sorry. I am originally from the South and I love Memphis, but being a New Yorker now I feel sometimes that I get a little snobby and elitist when it comes to food. The food here at Brother Juniper can put to shame most any NYC locale for breakfast or brunch. Not only the food, but I have to say the coffee and espresso are some of the best I've had outside of Europe and NYC is of course known for it's many coffee joints. The food and drinks are great and the service equally so, my group had 0 complaints and we were never rushed while we sipped our post meal coffee despite there being a growing crowd outside the dining area. When I find myself flying into Memphis in the morning I'll be coming here.

Stop #3 on our cross country road trip, and sweet Jesus this breakfast was to die for. I may be smited for my blasphemy (there's a lot of monk paraphernalia here!), but it's worth it. We made a reservation for brunch Saturday morning, and after a short wait looking at local paintings we were seated in a small dining area and feasting our eyes on every one else's breakfast.

What to choose?! Those pancakes that just went by looked fluffy, but the open-faced omelets looked so big that it could be split between the three of us. Instead we settled on some classics (granola with blueberries and a cinnamon roll) and something different (scrambled eggs with fresh pesto and their take on a monte cristo). We couldn't help ourselves from sharing our meals with each other: the monte cristo, a griddled ham and cheese between two slices of french toast, was rich and wholly filling, whereas the cheese grits were essentially cheese and butter being held together by a heart attack. In a word: a-mazing.

If you're looking for a place for brunch, Brother Juniper's is a must! You'll have a hard time choosing what to order and realize you'll just have to come back again. Also, make sure you get a sampling of all their homemade preserves!

I especially appreciated that Brother Juniper's was a major supporter of different educational programs in the area, such as KIPP Memphis. To me this shows that the establishment is invested in its community!

Thank You, Memphis Yelpers! I love it when I actually use Yelp for reco's and they turn out to be stellar! Best Breakfast in Memphis! You can't beat the menu for traditional breakfast mixed with a huge menu of omelettes and scrambles, and with downhome charm and service, I can see why Brother Juniper's is a breakfast fave of Memphians.

I'm a sucker for a breakfast burrito, so I ordered the black bean burrito. I loved that the scrambled eggs inside were seasoned and not bland like so many takes on the burrito. Chock full of tasty goodness, and served with sour cream and a mild tomato salsa, it was great.

I loved the homemade jams for the toast and picked up a jar of the apple for my mom. Brother J's sells all of their specialty condiments like hot sauces, jams and the yummy seasoning salt. The menu was huge so it begs many return visits. Guess I have to come back to Memphis!

Flew in town way too early for work and had a few hours to kill. Decided to check this place out thanks to Yelp. When my coworker and I pulled up to this little shack with the gravel parking lot and no shortage of potholes, I had to double check to make sure we were at the right place!

Inside, the decor was cozy and homey...and CROWDED on a Wednesday morning. This was a good sign. We both ordered open faced omelets ($10 each) as recommended by Yelpers and stuffed ourselves silly trying to actually eat it all. I got the Florentine and my coworker ordered the "San Diegan", which had Rachel Ray's face next to it. When they showed up, there was so much topping that they looked more like nachos than omelets! The omelet itself was more than sufficient for a meal but it also came with a huge cup of cheesy cheese grits and a buttery biscuit (or toast). I could only manage a few courtesy bites of the sides but they were good too. By the time we left around 9am, there was already a dozen people waiting to be seated.

When we had our meeting for work and told the people we met with where we ate, they said they've never even been themselves because the wait on the weekends are beyond ridiculous. So, if you want to try this place, go early and go on a weekday.

Definitely a brunch success. Thanks again, Yelp!

Stopped here on my Memphis Gluttony Tour 2011.  Actually I was in Memphis for a conference and this place was recommended from a local so I had to try it out.
I can give the same review about almost everywhere went in Memphis:
You walk in and this place has a concrete floor with some unique Jesus inspired decorations and it just has a very down home, welcoming feel to it.  People greet you genuinely, not because it's part of their jobs, but because they are truly good people.  I just really enjoyed that part of my visit.

I had a hard time choosing between everything on the menu because it was so robust and good, but I finally settled on biscuits and gravy with some cheesy grits and bacon.  The biscuits were I think $3.50 so I was expecting something tiny, but when the food came out, I was shocked.  The portions were quite large considering the price and everything was delicious. The gravy was very rich and had a great peppercorn flavor.  The grits were perfect as well... very creamy and not overblown with cheese.  I'm so glad we stopped here.

I went to Brother Juniper's with a local at the University of Memphis on Sunday.  It takes over an hour to get a table, so I was really expecting it to knock my socks off.  It didn't.  It's standard NJ diner breakfast with the exception of the super-orange cheese grits.  Grits aren't generally available in NJ.  Cracker Barrel has the same wait time and the food has some taste.  Next time I'm in Memphis, I won't be re-visiting.  I'll go to Cracker Barrel.

Everything in Memphis seems to be a "hidden gem." From obscure little diners to run-down BBQ shacks to famous house restaurants, all the grubbage is found off the beaten path. Brother Juniper's is no different. It is located in this little cabin next to a dry cleaners. Crazy!

The food is somewhat straightforward with quick service, low prices, and a close-knit environment. I sat at the counter in between two other stools. I overslept and showed up at 8AM. Boy, there was a 10 person line already!

I sat down and placed my order for not the signature omelets, but for a Monte Cristo. I have not had many in my life, so I figured I might as well eat one here, as it serves the filling between 2 slices of French Toast.

The Monte Cristo was chockful of ham and swiss, but I would have liked the bread to be a little toastier. The bread was somewhat soggy oily. The pure maple syrup was a nice touch. I also ordered a side of home fries. They were nice and crisp and oily, as they should be.

Brother Juniper's is a solid dining option for those looking to satisfy early morning munchies while in Memphis. Space is limited, but the food is affordable and worth the drive if you are willing to find this obscure little joint.

My friend and I stopped in Memphis on our way to Austin. We went for a long run on the Memphis Greenline and then headed to eat every last bit of those calories right back.

This is the place to do it.

The menu is pure awesome and fat although you can sub lots of healthy stuff if you so choose. (Normally I don't advocate this...but don't sub out).

From the outside, it looks a little broken down, but don't let the cover fool you. Inside it's down home and full awesome.

Sunday morning breakfast.  Church lets out and everyone flocks to their favorite restaurant.  Want to beat the crowd and still get good food?

Skip church - go to Brother Juniper's.

Brother Juniper's, named for the Friar of the same name, has religious paintings on the wall, so it's a little like church anyway.  For those of us who know their saints (or waste time Googling them) Brother Juniper did 'many a good deed', but was always doing something wrong in the process.  Skipping church for breakfast... yeah, that counts.

The rights and wrongs don't end there either.  Brother Juniper's has a nice homey feeling.  Assuming your kitchen attaches to your bathroom.  That's right, if you are unfortunate enough, you will get a table a few feet from the toilet.  Pray nobody has to drop a bomb while you are eating.

Standard breakfast options are available, but I opted for a less commonplace breakfast, and went with the Gyro potatoes.  If you skip church for breakfast, you may as well live dangerously.  I'm not sure what compelled me, but I also ordered a fried egg too.

    Two words: SALTY!

OK, thats one word, but trust me, they double up on the salt.  If you are one of those people who salt all their food before they taste it, you might love this place.  I'm not.  God was punishing me with salt.

Beneath the salt, I could tell the flavors were quite good, but the salt was deadly.  My fried egg was fine, so I plopped it on top of the potatoes to dilute the salt.  It made it tolerable, but the damage to their rating was done.  The food was good, until Brother Juniper did something wrong too.

If I were to return, I would request no salt.  They have salt (and  tasty seasoned salt) on the tables.  I can season to a more reasonable taste.

Well, my second trip proved to me that it wasn't an off day, the place just isn't that great. I expect, after a fourty-five minute wait, for something to jump off the plate and dazzle me. I do not expect, after a forty-five minute wait, to get a sloppy over cooked omelett and heavily over seasoned cheese grits. This place is NOT worth the ridiculously long waits....maybe if it was after bar close, I was wasted and nothing else was open THEN I could appreciate this greasy spoon. I will say, however, that the service is wonderful. The staff is so friendly and attentive even when it's obvious that they're in the weeds, something a former service industry employee, like myself, really appreciates. My suggestion for great service AND great food with hardly a wait? Cafe Eclectic....so good!

I have heard amazing things about the place and it is my last week in Memphis for a while so I had to give Brother Juniper's a try. We tried to go one Sunday, but their was an hour wait.  Not to be deterred, we returned Monday to find out the place was closed...oops.  Finally made it in today. Guess the third time really is the charm!

I ordered the Pacific Northwest omelet and my boyfriend had the portobello mushroom and roasted pepper omelet.  I don't think he came up for air while eating and had quickly polished it down while I was still mid-way through.  Safe to say he liked it :) My omelet was also very good.  Veggies were fresh, flavors went well together, even though the eggs were slightly dry.  I am convinced my father makes the best omelets on the plant (everyone who tries them adamantly agrees)...So I could be slightly biased ;)

Overall it was a very pleasant brunch experience. I was struck by how warm and friendly the staff was. I felt right at home.  In fact if they hadn't been closing I would have loved to sit and sip my coffee a little longer.  Hope to be back!

Quick notes- Closed Mondays (as I found out the hard way), very casual, located near the University of Memphis, great service, and tasty omelets

I'm still salivating thinking about Brother Juniper's.

Although the people at Alamo Rentals said "DON'T go over to Walker ave...that's a BAD area"....we trusted our fellow yelpers and headed on over.  I LOVE my yelpers...you've never let me down.  Brother Juniper's was insanely good.

Walking in, there is a waiting room with a coffee bar and a pseudo-comedian named Sam who'll make whatever you want to enjoy while you're waiting for your table.  We didn't have to wait but 5 mins for counter seating.

As everyone else has said, food was freshly made and sooooo delicious. We had the fig and blueberry jams.  Wow, so good.

Have to agree with everyone else that the service was very friendly, but rather slow. Although, when settling our bill up front, we ended up in a great conversation with the owning family.

I really was hoping to get back there one more time before leaving Memphis...but believe me when I say, it's a MUST-STOP whenever I go back.

Go. Enjoy. Just don't plan on it being a quickie.

When I go home to Memphis to visit my parents I inevitably end up going to IHOP or Perkins for brunch with my family.  Thank god I discovered Brother Juniper's.   This place is great!  Not just the food, but the ambiance.   The restaurant is pretty small, and homey.  The walls are lined with religious icons and the waitresses are ultra nice and aren't afraid to pat you on the back and call you "sweetie".

This morning I had the black bean breakfast burrito.  It was so so so so good.   My dad had the ham and cheese omelet and my mom had the two fried eggs.   It was so great and really reasonably priced.  I can't wait to go back.  It's sure to be a family tradition.

** The place closes at 12:30pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sundays.  Pretty early for me, but if you get there before the closing time they'll still let you in.

Brother Juniper's is housed in a converted midtown cottage, wedged between a college laundrette, a college coffee place, several college bars, a college pizza place, college burrito place, and a Salvation Army (frequented by college students).

Now, I know what you're thinking, but no: the clientele is made up of local families... okay, okay- and some college students. But not as many as you'd think!

The restaurant is run by a husband and wife, active members of the Greek community and church (hence the restaurant name and subdued religious interior theme) who- in addition to serving a really great breakfast- sell a line of homemade jams and jellies next to the counter. The owners are dedicated to getting to know their regular clients, and more than once I've found an extra apple butter slipped into my bag of jams.

The menu: A third is taken up by omlettes and omlette variations, with good reason. All are great; the greek omlette is particularly delish. Biscuits and gravy come really and truly covered in gravy (the biscuits are more like dumplings than anything alse). Their biscuits alone are quite good; made with half buttermilk recipe and half regular recipe and a handful of whole wheat flour in the mix, they taste different- not bad at all, but different. Vegetarian options abound, and there are low-fat alternatives (granola with or without yogurt and berries, oatmeal, and cereal options).

The line goes out the door after ten on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Come early, or come on a weekday, and you'll have no trouble getting a seat.

Had my first experiance here this morning, and it was great.  I tried the french toast and loved it.
The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff was helpful and alert.
I can see why it is so popular.

Brother Juniper's has excellent Biscuits & Gravy!

You'll need to ask for a side of the gravy, and the wait is long (no reservations) at this Greek brunch join that's near the University of Memphis campus, but the food is well worth the wait!

Their Greek omelette was good too.

Brother Juniper's is loved far and wide in Memphis. I stopped in several years ago after hearing so many great things about it. And yes, it was good- I had the flaky biscuits that everyone raves about plus a little bit of my husband's omelette. But....I just wasn't blown away. I think it's a bit overhyped (excuse me, I need to run and get my hard hat and big girl pants on since I'm sure I'm going to get pounded for that last statement).

The place was packed, as it usually is on weekends, and we had to wait more than an hour to get a table. Did we mind? No. We were simply looking forward to what we knew would be The. Best. Breakfast. Ever. We were seated and ordered quickly as we had plenty of time to review the menu while waiting. Our food came out pretty quickly, and we dug in. It was good. No complaints. The service? Not all that great. We waited so long for our check that we thought about throwing some cash on the table and walking out. And refills? No such luck.

I'm really not trying to be harsh, because Brother Juniper's is a Memphis institution of sorts. And I'll definitely give them props for their menu, but it doesn't rate at the top of my list for Memphis breakfast joints.

Stopped in for breakfast with Andy P. during our Memphis stop on the road trip from Dallas to Connecticut.

I had the omelet with avocado and salsa, and some cheese grits.  The omelet was OK, though the flavors didn't quite go together as I hoped they would.  Being an authentic-looking place, I expected the cheese grits to come in any color other than blaring-artificial-orange.  Not good.  I had some of Andy's cheeseless grits and they were pretty good.  A decent meal, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for.

Probability of going back: 2% (I don't live in Memphis!)

I've been to Juniper's twice now on both my recent trips to Memphis and I have felt the exact same way about it both times, it's a 4.

It's out by Memphis State (I hate calling it Univ. of Memphis) and is on an unassuming road with a sort of hole-in-the-wall feel. Once you go in, though, it's bursting with life and has been full (without a wait, praise Allah) both times I've gone.

After sitting, there's the obligatory coffee (decent, nothing special) and water (I don't have enough stones to review water, but there was a really good treatment I read on Yelp of tap water at Starbucks and why it's so good). Then, on to breakfast.

I love grits, so I had them. I had some bacon and a waffle too. They were all very good, but I wouldn't call them great. Definitely satisfying. Randy S. got some egg-omelet thing (I don't like eggs or cheese, so that pretty much eliminates omelets for me) with salsa and avocados on it (I also dislike avocados, so it clearly wasn't for me) which he reported being satisfactory. He's not a big cheese guy either and he ended up with cheese-grits, which was a bummer.

The service was very adequate and the vibe was really good. All in all I like this place a lot, but might seek out another spot for breakfast next time I'm in Memphis now that I've been twice. Still, a worthwhile stop.
