FANTASTIC breakfast, and definitely the best in Memphis.
Open faced omlettes are incredible, as are the pancakes.
Go for the home fries (baby red bliss potatoes) over the cheesy grits, and go for the biscuit with homemade preserves.
COFFEE!!! Ethiopian coffee is some of my favorite, and I'm not a HUGE coffee drinker.
Good mom and pop service. Be warned that you will probably wait for a table (up to an hour on the weekends), but they have coffee out for you to enjoy while you wait.
BEST THERE IS!
The food at Brother Juniper's is excellent (except for the cheese grits which taste like Frito-Lay cheese dip from a can),
However, I can't tolerate the atmosphere. It is way too chaotic for me. The dining room is very cramped and noisy.
The chaos wouldn't be such a big deal if you didn't have to be there so long. On top of the long wait for a table, the food takes an inordinate amount of time to come out. And, I have yet to find a time that there is not a wait for a table - including 7:30am one Saturday.
Yelp to the rescue once again! Three of us landed in Memphis early one morning and needed a place to get some grub. We searched on Yelp and came here, only to find out from some locals later that this was also their favorite spot - a clear indication that the Internet doesn't always lie.
We were delighted to see an extensive menu and I was happy to see vegan and vegetarian options available as well. (Tofu scrambles, veggie sausages, yum!).
Food was solid, service was okay - about what was to be expected on a Tuesday morning.
Definitely would return to eat here again.
Yes, yes, yes. Go to Brother Juniper's for breakfast. This is one of the two best breakfasts in Memphis (the other being at The Inn at Hunt Phelan). The potatoes are tasty, especially with poached eggs and a side of black beans. The black beans come with tomatoes, cheese, green onions and sour cream. They are like having a side of black bean chili. Yummy. The coffee is awesome and goes especially well with their homemade banana bread.
We love cozy places with a busy city atmosphere. This is a VERY busy, small, family-owned restaurant. Every inch of floor space is occupied by tables or the single bar with a few stools. If you have issues with being in close quarters with others, this may not be the right place for you. The service is super friendly, especially considering how many people are coming in and out.
Four small notes of comment that don't impact our score at all with everything else there so perfect: 1) If you go on the weekends, make sure to get there as early as possible due to Brother Juniper's being quite the spot to be on the weekends for breakfast and the wait reflects that (they do offer free coffee while you wait - a nice touch); 2) don't bring small kids on the weekends if you are not there early as they tend to get cranky during the wait; 3) it is not the easiest place to navigate if you use a wheel chair or scooter or if your kids come in a stroller - the doors are narrow and the bathrooms are very small; and 4) we'd recommend having breakfast for lunch as the lunch items pale in comparison to the breakfast.
The BEST breakfast in town-- my personal fave is eggs with straun and home fries, but the black beans tempt me when I want a nontraditional meal to start my day; yes there is a wait on the weekends and late mornings, but it is the place to be and has the food to eat; my girls love the oat bran waffle and the pancakes and cinnamon roll; my husband loves the Greek omelet
Brother Juniper's has excellent Biscuits & Gravy!
You'll need to ask for a side of the gravy, and the wait is long (no reservations) at this Greek brunch join that's near the University of Memphis campus, but the food is well worth the wait!
Their Greek omelette was good too.
My former employer and friend back in Memphis called this his old standby where he would come to think and clear his mind. And I can see why. The folks that own this place are really friendly and I think he has known them since he was a child. The atmosphere is very friendly and it's almost like you are sitting in a home kitchen. The owners treat you as such too. I think that the stand out menu items here are the omelets. They have some very good options like the Spanakopita omelet with fresh spinach, feta, and mozzarella cheese, onion and spices. Rachel Ray also visited this place and named the San Diegan her favorite omelet.
Biscuits and gravy, home fries and coffee. I almost don't want to talk about this place because I want to keep it to myself. Juniper's is a place that is interesting and relaxing and fun to eat at. Walk in early, sit down, grab a paper and read and take a look at who is around. Watch the people come in, sometimes they're business types with their ties tossed over their shoulders having a breakfast meeting, sometimes they are college students coming in to work on a paper, sometimes there are families there, and sometimes you get to watch a hang over. People watching sometimes is one of the greatest things about a restaurant, in my opinion.
But to continue, Junipers has great food, great atmosphere and a great selection of breakfast and lunch foods. It is not a dinner place and close after lunch. They have anything from open faced omelets, gyros, to just plain ol' egg breakfasts.
Fresh and delicious!! Friendly, wonderful atmosphere! Love the owners, they are great caring folks who work with the unfortunate of Memphis and really give from the heart!
I love breakfasts at Brother Juniper's. I actually live in Nashville, but have family in Texas, and anytime I'm driving back, I always stop here for breakfast. The meals are big and delicious, and have plenty of options for vegetarians like me. I LOVE their home fries and make sure to order a meal that comes with them. So far I've had the black bean breakfast burrito and an omelet, both of which were delicious.
I've heard that it gets really crowded at peak times, but luckily I usually get there before 9, and there are still tables available.
This is of course an awesome place for breakfast. I showed up here several times and walked away before I ever actually ate here. I finally figured out that I really need to get here EARLY if I don't want to wait. And when I say early, I mean like 8:30.
I've actually never tried any of their famous egg concoctions, because I am a little too into carbs for my own good. If you are in that same boat, the plain ol' #2 breakfast is really spectacularly good considering it is your standard 2 egg platter. Eggs, choice of meat, choice of bread, choice of grits or potatoes. Super fresh and just exceptionally well-prepared. I guess I must not eat a lot of really fresh, well-prepared meals because it really stood out as awesome to me.
I've also had either the waffle or the pancakes, I forget. It was pretty good but apparently not that memorable.
Oh, AND. Get the spreadable fruit on your biscuit/toast, and also give the nice man $6.50 so you can take some home. That stuff is amazing, and so much better for you and less processed than jelly! Who knew? Brother Juniper, I guess.
I take away 1/2 star because you have to get there so early or wait a long time...it's not anything bad on their part, but it does affect your experience. They lose another 1/2 star because they don't have fountain drinks (come ON). It is a big deal. If I am waking up at 8am to get here I am going to need a fountain diet coke.
I love breakfast food and this place did not disappoint me. The biscuits are probably some of the best I've ever had. Loaded cheese grits....yeah...sadly I can't find those anywhere in Indiana. The eggs were also delicious. The next time I'm in Memphis I'm coming here again...maybe every morning.
I have eaten here several times now and have added it to our standard weekend brunch destinations. It's near the University of Memphis and has an eclectic crowd. They have a wide variety of breakfast choices for most any palate. I've tried a fair variety and been pleased. The biscuits are pretty incredible, have one (or a 2nd to go). Wait times are as you would expect for a popular brunch location. Bathrooms are a mess, go before you get there.
My husband told me that this place just got expanded but expect a long wait on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We had to wait for 45 minutes on a Sunday morning BUT it was WELL WORTH IT!!! As you wait, you can browse around their gift shop, read a newspaper with a fresh cup of coffee (complimentary) at the door.
The food is to be reckoned with. No wonder they call it the best kept breakfast secret in Memphis.
I had the San Diegan (open face omelet) that was suggested by Rachel Ray and boy did I make a right choice! It was great! Along with it - was cheese grits that was amazing.
The service was great even though they were super busy.
I am definitely going here for breakfast again!
This place has great breakfast food. Yes, there is a long wait but I would say that it is worth it. (Bring something to read?) It is actually a little pricey for eggs and such as well. The last time I went there the woman in the group next to me sneezed over 50 times and for some reason refused to go outside. It just really ruined it for me. I can't go back anymore.
If you are looking for breakfast, Brother Junipers is the place to go!!! You will probably have to wait, but they are expanding so hopefully that will help.
The food is phenomenal!!! The service is great, too. This makes for a delicious experience. It is like going home to eat with a bunch of friends. You can't beat the omelets and the atmosphere!
Mix that with the gift shop, the great people, and the art and you have the best meal ever. I love this place!
Really, really great (and humongous!)open-faced omelets here. There is always a long wait on weekends but worth it if you want to have a fantastic breakfast/brunch experience.
Brother Juniper's is housed in a converted midtown cottage, wedged between a college laundrette, a college coffee place, several college bars, a college pizza place, college burrito place, and a Salvation Army (frequented by college students).
Now, I know what you're thinking, but no: the clientele is made up of local families... okay, okay- and some college students. But not as many as you'd think!
The restaurant is run by a husband and wife, active members of the Greek community and church (hence the restaurant name and subdued religious interior theme) who- in addition to serving a really great breakfast- sell a line of homemade jams and jellies next to the counter. The owners are dedicated to getting to know their regular clients, and more than once I've found an extra apple butter slipped into my bag of jams.
The menu: A third is taken up by omlettes and omlette variations, with good reason. All are great; the greek omlette is particularly delish. Biscuits and gravy come really and truly covered in gravy (the biscuits are more like dumplings than anything alse). Their biscuits alone are quite good; made with half buttermilk recipe and half regular recipe and a handful of whole wheat flour in the mix, they taste different- not bad at all, but different. Vegetarian options abound, and there are low-fat alternatives (granola with or without yogurt and berries, oatmeal, and cereal options).
The line goes out the door after ten on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Come early, or come on a weekday, and you'll have no trouble getting a seat.
Stopped in for breakfast with Andy P. during our Memphis stop on the road trip from Dallas to Connecticut.
I had the omelet with avocado and salsa, and some cheese grits. The omelet was OK, though the flavors didn't quite go together as I hoped they would. Being an authentic-looking place, I expected the cheese grits to come in any color other than blaring-artificial-orange. Not good. I had some of Andy's cheeseless grits and they were pretty good. A decent meal, but not necessarily worth going out of your way for.
Ambiance: 22/25 stars
Food: 14/25 stars
Service: 20/25 stars
Bathroom: 18/25 stars
Probability of going back: 2% (I don't live in Memphis!)
Brother Juniper's recently expanded restaurant now includes a gift shop. In the gift shop you can purchase their hot-sauce, jam, etc. Additionally you can view art for sale while you wait. However, be prepared for a LONG wait (30 + minutes) if you go on Saturday or Sunday morning. If you cannot handle the wait then place a TOGO order and it will be ready in 10-15 minutes.
Rachel Ray added the San Diegan (open face omelet) as one of her favorite dishes in the book (http://www.foodnetwork...) "$40 A Day: Best Eats in Town". I was hesitant to try a dish recommended by Rachel Ray but it has become one of my favorites along with Garden and the Lamb Omelet. Jam is made fresh, a must on a warm biscuit. A side option of tasty cheese grits or home fries to any omelet will leave you satiated. The portions are fairly big and you might feel comfortable splitting the omelet with a friend.
Expect to pay around 8 to 10 dollars if you are getting any kind of omelet. It is worth the price.
Had my first experiance here this morning, and it was great. I tried the french toast and loved it.
The atmosphere was cozy, and the staff was helpful and alert.
I can see why it is so popular.
I've been to Juniper's twice now on both my recent trips to Memphis and I have felt the exact same way about it both times, it's a 4.
It's out by Memphis State (I hate calling it Univ. of Memphis) and is on an unassuming road with a sort of hole-in-the-wall feel. Once you go in, though, it's bursting with life and has been full (without a wait, praise Allah) both times I've gone.
After sitting, there's the obligatory coffee (decent, nothing special) and water (I don't have enough stones to review water, but there was a really good treatment I read on Yelp of tap water at Starbucks and why it's so good). Then, on to breakfast.
I love grits, so I had them. I had some bacon and a waffle too. They were all very good, but I wouldn't call them great. Definitely satisfying. Randy S. got some egg-omelet thing (I don't like eggs or cheese, so that pretty much eliminates omelets for me) with salsa and avocados on it (I also dislike avocados, so it clearly wasn't for me) which he reported being satisfactory. He's not a big cheese guy either and he ended up with cheese-grits, which was a bummer.
The service was very adequate and the vibe was really good. All in all I like this place a lot, but might seek out another spot for breakfast next time I'm in Memphis now that I've been twice. Still, a worthwhile stop.
The long wait just kills the rating for me, but to be fair, they do have the best breakfast in Memphis. Biscuits are fresh and flaky, the eggs are creative, and the oatmeal is steel-cut and slow cooked. The grits are wonderfully cheesy, too. :) Yum!
When I go home to Memphis to visit my parents I inevitably end up going to IHOP or Perkins for brunch with my family. Thank god I discovered Brother Juniper's. This place is great! Not just the food, but the ambiance. The restaurant is pretty small, and homey. The walls are lined with religious icons and the waitresses are ultra nice and aren't afraid to pat you on the back and call you "sweetie".
This morning I had the black bean breakfast burrito. It was so so so so good. My dad had the ham and cheese omelet and my mom had the two fried eggs. It was so great and really reasonably priced. I can't wait to go back. It's sure to be a family tradition.
** The place closes at 12:30pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sundays. Pretty early for me, but if you get there before the closing time they'll still let you in.
Quite simply one of the best places to have breakfast in the city. Located in a row of stores, next to a coffee shop and laundry mat, Br.Juniper's has been a favorite early morning spot for years, with good reason: the best baked goods, biscuits & rolls teamed with eggs served as omelettes with a choice of ingredients, like spinach, feta chesse (or any way you like) and strong coffee. Try the potatoes or 'home fries', you won't regret it. The earlier you arrive, the better your rchance of getting a table. During the spring and summer months, they serve outside in their 'garden area'. Be sure to pick-up some jellies & jams while you're there.
If you ever go to Memphis, this is the place to go for breakfast. I was there for a week and I went here everyday. I tried everything on the menu and it was all good. They have excellent service and very friendly. I wish I could live here so I could eat here everyday.
Fantastic place. Can be busy, so be ready for a wait on the weekends. Omelets and specials always delicious, but the conventional, top-menu breakfast items keep me going there. I dig the cheese grits. Endless coffee. I will go back soon.
