We stopped for lunch on a nice sunny day. My husband ordered a French dip with fries and I ordered a club sandwich with peanut cole slaw. This food was the saltiest food I've ever had at a restaurant. The club had lunch meat in it- not the good, quality kind, just plain ol' lunch meat.   The coffee was old. Service was poor. It was dirty (cobwebs in the sky lights).  Our order was taken and they never came back to check on us.   We've seen this place go downhill over the years and it is VERY apparent they don't care about this business. Last time.

On our way back from Tahoe, our friends wanted to check out Old Town Auburn, which is mostly a cluster of antique shops and redneck souvenirs (I'm soooo not kidding about that last part).  We walked around for a bit, then decided to head into Brookside Grill after browsing their menu.

It was a gloriously sunny day, and we sat outside on their back patio, which is, brookside.  The garden was decorated with Japanese maple and weathered wood - very cute and peaceful.  Upon the owner's recommendation, we all ordered burgers.  My jalapeno burger was delicious, and the coleslaw (NOT made with mayonnaise) was excellent.  I ate the entire thing with a knife and fork for fear I'd pick it up and drop it all over myself.  I also picked some fries off my boyfriend's plate, and they were pretty darn good too.

All in all, a great experience, and the burgers weren't that pricey, considering I really didn't feel hungry again until well after 9pm.

The atmosphere is better than the food, which can be very good or mediocre. Eggs were runny and coffee was too strong. Are they cooking over a campfire or something ?

Boy, am I a major procrastinator.  Or ... maybe I'm starting to feel more protective about some of my favorite businesses.  Either way, I've been sitting on this treasure of a restaurant for far too long and really should share.

The Brookside Grill in Auburn is one of my favorite places to stop on the way to and from Tahoe, especially during the warm months.  This charming cafe is located at the back of a small arcade in Old Town, but unlike typical businesses that cater to a clientele consisting of mostly tourists, the Brookside Grill ... in the immortal words of Bret Michaels ... does NOT suck.

You'll always get service with a smile and a pleasant attitude that isn't phony or annoying.  The open-air atmosphere is really charming with a major plus of this restaurant being the actual brook that runs through the restaurant.  It could be scorching hot outside, but it always feels comfortable at the Brookside Grill because it's well-shaded and nicely ventilated.

My favorite at the Brookside Grill is their Greek Salad which consists of a variety of greens that are so fragrant, fresh, and colorful that I could have sworn they grew them in their own garden.  The appropriately snarky yet friendly waiter told me that they did and that they didn't in one breath.  The chef who put together my salad each time was very artistic about it, providing a perfectly balanced combination of flavors, colors, and textures throughout.

My boyfriend gets something different every time that we go, and he's always satisfied.  As I've said before, he's not a fan of food, but whenever we head up to Tahoe he's the first to suggest that we stop at the Brookside Grill for lunch, and he's already planning our trip home around a meal at the Brookside Grill too.

Beverages were bottomless last time I checked, and that's perfect for sleepy drivers in need of a caffeine fix and a great meal before hitting the road again.

Definitely stop at the Brookside Grill next time you're in Auburn ... just save a table for me, mmmkay?  I hate waiting ...

I get serious cravings to eat the plain house salad here, especially in the summer as the heat turns up.  (I'm a garden salad junkie)

Adorable little restaurant, tucked away down a long hallway.  The main difference between the outside and inside seating seems to be the presence of a roof.  The inside seating is like seating on the porch of an old house, with canvas walls in the winter time.

The seats are mostly cheap white plastic lawn chairs (although I have seen a few metal lawn chairs available).  It's a silly thing to complain about, but I really think they should get better seats, those plastic ones make me nervous, especially when I see an older heavy person in one.

There is a little creek the flows in between the outside and inside sections.  It's very refreshing, especially in the summer time, and it's fun to look for fish.

Funny story: There is one TV for patrons to watch while dining.  Last time we were there, it was showing Hannibal... the brain eating scene.  The WHOLE restaurant was glued to it.  The owner didn't notice what was on, she just thought it must be good because everyone was watching!  LOL

    Great price, setting, service.

Don't you love it when an absolute lack-of-plan comes together??  That was me and my family this weekend.  We had attempted to go to a place in Lotus for lunch last Sunday.  For reasons too numerous (and pointless) to go into here, we did not eat there.  It was a beautiful day, so we decided to take a little drive, try something completely new and headed to Auburn.  Since we had no idea where to eat - we looked up some places on our GPS.  There were several centered near Old Auburn and we decided to go and check out a couple of them.

We ended up at Brookside Grill.  (Thank you GPS!!)  The setting sealed the deal for us.  The entire restaurant is basically outdoors (at this time of year anyway), since the main seating area is really a covered patio where they can put up or take down the surrounding walls.  Just across the brook is the outdoor seating where there are tables with umbrellas.  Yes, a brook really runs through the middle of the place.

We ordered one of the specials.  It was a Cesar salad 'done up' right.  On the salad was a grilled chicken breast, a sliced half an avocado, halved grape tomatoes, grated parmesan cheese, diced bacon and croutons.  This salad was excellent.  It was a great combination of flavors, and a very generous portion.

We also ordered (and split each) the Mushroom Swiss burger.  O!M!G!  I am not a burger snob (maybe) or elitist (perhaps)... how about connoisseur... (sounds better)...  However, I have tried a lot of burgers in a lot of different places.  Enough to know that it is rare to find one that is truly excellent.  Brookside has achieved that rare goal.  This was an absolutely fantastic burger.  Cooked to perfection.  Included nicely caramelized onions; and served not on a bun, but on a toasted parmesan crusted bread.  I have not had a burger this good in years.  (I think this burger alone could earn this ranking.)

We arrived not long after the Sunday brunch ended, and they were telling us about the buffet if we decide to come back.  (Sounds like a pretty nice spread they put out.)  One of the desserts they put out is bread pudding.  So, my wife was telling the waiter (owner/manager) how she loves it...  He (Mike) just went over brought her a huge piece of still warm bread pudding... gratis.  I'm not a bread pudding fan, but thought it was quite good.  My wife is the bread pudding aficionado, and was in heaven.

They do have a Kid's Menu.  My son had the PB&J on what looked to be home-made bread.  If not home-made, it must have been from a local bakery.

Some of the reviewers seem to have had some issues with the service.  I truly hope we don't encounter that in the future, because that makes such a difference.  However, our service was excellent.  Mike was very friendly and attentive.  He seems to really enjoy what they are doing there.  Providing excellent food in a wonderful atmosphere.  Thank you Mike!

Lastly.... You've got to LOVE a place that has Kona Longboard Lager on their short list of beers.

P.S.  Two days later... I'm still salivating over that burger.

What a great place! I hope people don't pass it up because it's a bit tucked out of sight. It's beautiful and sort of feels like you're sitting in a tree house.

I went for the first time this weekend and had the brunch buffet. Made to order scrambles (or eggs benedict, if you wanted) from a very upbeat and chatty gentlemen, bisquits and gravy, french toast, fresh fruit (and ripe, at that), bread pudding, potatoes, bacon, sausage, strawberries and a CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN (sigh...). I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff.

All you can eat of all of that, plus a coffee or mimosa for $13. Heck yes! I haven't had lunch or dinner there, but I certainly wouldnt hesitate to. We'll be back.

My french toasty was MOLDY and they replaced it with pancakes that were uncooked in the middle, then stilled charged us for the plate of food.
If I wasn't with family who were paying for the meal I would've had some words with the manager.

No thanks Brookside Grill, I won't be back.

We came here several months ago after a nice day of browsing in Auburn. It's a beautiful, beautiful place: feels like a giant covered garden, with a creek running right through it and plenty of green, but at the same time it's very casual. Hard to explain, it's like a mix between a garden and a diner, but in the best possible way. When we came it was all but deserted, and service was very fast. Turkey sandwiches were good, but the fries tasted crazily of bacon, which could be good or bad however you look at it, but to me it was awful. I think I remember it being kind of expensive, too. It's really beautiful and I'm glad I got to check it out, but I think I'd go somewhere else next time.

What can I saY?  Well a lot if you know me, haha!  We stumbled upon this cute and quaint little diner in the back of a cute antique mall in old town Auburn.  I was a bit standofish by the prices but after actually eating the food I decided you get what you pay for!!!!  I ordered the chicken burrito for $9.95... I riske d it cause it isn't a Mexican restaurant and there are plenty in the area that are good... but that is what I felt like eating and boy was I very pleasantly surprised!  The sauce was unique and OUTSTANDING!!!!  Yeah, it was better than any burrito sauce I have ever had before.  The chopped chicken in the burrito tasted fresh and marinated like somebody really cared!!!  Imagine that!  The rice was seasoned as well... with cilantro and garlic??  OUTSTANDING is the only way I can describe it... and imagine my surprise when the owner Mike, also our very friendly waiter said they are known for their burgers and said we must come back for them... OK they gotta be good cause there was nothing bad about the food whatsoever!  The hubby got a huge tuna salad sandwich that he loved that came with fresh cut french fries that had a sprinkle of BBQ stuff that made them taste like BBQ potato chips... OUTSTANDING!  We will be back even at $10+ a plate.  Great service and really delish and fresh food.  See you soon.  OH and what a fun day exploring old town Auburn.

Brookside Grill is a great place to eat. Rachel and I tried it out on one of our first visits, but the new owners have really improved the menu. We I wrote the hamburger review in the Sentinel, Brookside tied for the top spot. Rachel enjoys their lighter fare. Pleasant atmosphere, nice setting and friendly staff make the Brookside the perfect place for a relaxing meal. My only complaint was the music they were playing the last time I went.

Went to this place after leaving the Auruen alehouse since they had no more highchairs (for baby) Yay I was PO'd!!  But very happy we ended up here!! SO in your face ALEHOUSE!

I got a meatloaf sandwich, it was REALLY GOooddd!  Coleslaw, was asian inspired, all was super fresh, yummy!

Fries were seasoned good. Cute setting, outdoorsy feel.  I just think they need a sign right outside the entrance, it's sorta confusing, when walking in, you arent sure if it's the place, but it's a nice setting, and great homemade food, fresh!!

Brookside Grill is a great place to grab lunch is the summer.  Sitting outside with the creek running through it makes for a great setting.  The coleslaw, which I normally don't like was amazing.  The sandwhiches were good to.  Great place for a casual lunch.

Tucked in behind some nondescript stores in downtown Auburn you'll find the Brookside Grill, a pocket of lush emerald green that seems a world away from the bustle of downtown.  The food is great here and they have top knotch salads, but the real draw is the ambiance. Every table here gives you the impression you are on an veranda surrounded by a sea of plants .  One word of caution - the wine list here is pretty limited.. but then again who drinks wine with brunch except alcoholics?

let me start off by saying, my greek chicken sandwich was good.  but not good enough to ever come back here.  our dining experience first started with having us wait 20 minutes to be seated.  we just stood there like idiots with little acknowledgement.  then, our waitress was one of the rudest waitresses i've seen in a real long time.  her exact words out of her mouth at one point to a table full of senior citizens, "i only have two  hands."  and don't even get me started on the table of senior citizens.  she gave the food to the wrong people when she brought it out.  the one poor lady who's food was completely wrong, had to wait another 20 min before her food came out.  and guess what?  her new plate, still wrong.  it was unbelievable to sit there and watch.  as for us, when we sat down we asked if we would be able to substitute fruit for fries.  she very rudely informed us that the kitchen was low on fruit and would not be able to do this.  then i over heard her ask the table behind us if they wanted fruit with their meal.  i just feel that as busy as it might get, there is never a reason to be rude to your customers.
