Let me first say this - Brookside used to be a great golf course. Back in the day, it hosted the L.A. Open and the National Public Links Championship. Switch to 2009 - it is still a decent course, but there a few downsides: during football season, the course is used for Rose Bowl parking for the UCLA games. Now, I love me some UCLA, but this can't possibly be good for the grass, right? Also, it seems like they aerate the greens, etc. more often than other courses and that can lead to a bumpy game, plus, the greens already aren't the best. Oh, and during this water shortage they aren't watering the grass as much, so some areas are looking a bit dingy.
All-in-all, it's a decent golf course. I recommend course 1 - it's tougher than course 2. Oh, and the beer is really cold in the clubhouse!

This place is more recognizable to people as the place where you park your car while you stroll towards the Rose Bowl Stadium. It's great to park on. It's great to bbq or drink on. But a great golf course, this place is not.
This place is only good for people who are too lazy to drive but are more than able to wait for backed up holes. The tee boxes aren't too pristine. The fairways aren't too well-kept.
But I have to admit that this place makes you feel good about yourself. I blew up 4 holes (I blame it on no warmup at 545am) and I still scored relatively low compared to my usual score.
Price:
$40 with cart. Morning rate.
The course is decent and challenging. Course 1 is longer than 2 and significantly more of a challenge.
There are a few reasons I give this course s 2 out of 5:
1. The greens are never very impressive. I've never played Brookside (course 1 or 2) and thought, "These greens are so fast!" In fact, at least 3 times that I played the course, the greens were being aerated, which makes for an unpleasant round. Don't get me wrong, the greens are usually cut clean and they're pretty green... they just don't play very fast.
2. The whole staff seems to operate under the mentality that Brookside is always right (as opposed to the customer always being right). I played this week right after they aerated the fairways. The fairways also hadn't been cut in about 4 or 5 days, so they were long and nasty. I complained, and the guys in the clubhouse as well as the general manager denied there was anything wrong with the course. They said it was in top shape, that they get nothing but rave reviews, and, I quote, "the fairways are so tight it's sick" - words directly from the GM. This is after I just finish playing the course and experiencing uncut fairways with huge holes all over the place.
My complaints were treated with disdain and an incredulous attitude that I was way off base even questioning the condition of the course. Add to that the fact that they charge full price no matter what condition the course is in. So I pay $75 on a Sunday for a very sub-par experience. Not good customer service if you ask me.
I would love to say that I'm never going back to Brookside again because of this treatment, but the reality is that it's one of the more decent courses in the area, and their twilight prices are pretty good.
#2 Nay Course
Played here on an aeration discount. Course is good, very peaceful atmosphere. Greens are aerated, yet still not too bad. Course has some character, with bunkers about 230 yards out on most drives. Very flat course, with water coming into play on 1 hole, and a water channel on a few others. Green fees are going up again in July, although seems already expensive for that you get.

Slow course. Got on around 12:30, and barely finished around 6. 5somes here. Fairways are ok at… Read more »
Ah! One of the top three in our consideration for a wedding venue! Now I remember! But, alas, we did not choose this place in the end. A friend of mine attended a wedding there once and she remembered that the food was pretty good. Now, for someone to remember good food, that is amazing! Usually, after I attend a wedding, I tend to forget about the food, because it's the typical stuff. Well, if she remembered, then it must be good.
I visited with my dad and my sister, and one great thing about this location was the fact that it was VERY close to home, and when I looked over the pricing, it wasn't cheap, but it was okay because I believe they also had kids prices, and for $70 per person, open bar all night long! I don't drink, but others do, and even valet. But if we were to consider the lower packages, no valet, and people would have to walk where I don't recall there was a sidewalk. The premises looked kinda old, but not run-down. The banquet room was quite...green....like an olive green, but I could envision my wedding there. No high ceilings though, which was a must for my sister, as if her opinion mattered, but she had a point. The ceremony would have taken place right outside of the reception area, not bad....just another cemented area with a gazebo, with a green golf course as the background.
Another thing was that if you wanted to light candles, you had to get a permit from the city...which sounds like a pain, plus, I think there was a fee of at least $150 for that permit.
Not great, but good enough for me to consider as my one of my top three options, not because it was wowzah, but because of the convenience. And I think at that time, I was getting TIRED of looking...I just wanted to give up....
Slow course.. lots of Koreans. :)
Nice large local course.. say "hi" to my mom.

The worst thing I can say about this facility is that it's hot. If it's 80 downtown then add ten degrees every time. So bring plenty of water.
There are two courses which in and of itself is a good start. This pretty much assures you of being able to walk on quickly. They are both traditional parkland style and fun to play. When the greens are toasty in mid summer your ball can roll very fast and very true on the slopes of these undulating greens.
The practice facility is very good. Mats and depending on the day off grass as well.
The pro shop is about as good as it gets. The restaurant is also good enough to warrant a visit for breakfast even if you didn't play, which many locals do every day. Overall a very good public/muni. Their club championship every summer attracts all if California's best armatures and is one ofthe oldest if notthe oldest gold championship in the State. It's a top flight event and fun to play.
I rate the three best muni tracks in LA county as this one (No 1 course) Rancho Park and the Wilson course at Griffith Park. These are all very historic course that are old fashioned and fun to play. Don't miss any of them.
Classic So Cal golf w/ mature trees. Course 1 is longer. A few years back, they Laser-leveled the T-boxes. Last year, they added and upgraded the bunkers. There is a HUGE arroyo (river bed) that cuts through the entire facility. Many balls are offered to the golf gods. The city hosts a big tournament, and the competition is fierce. The club from Industry Hills and the Brookside Men's Club dook-it out every year!
Legends say that "Gone With The Wind" was filled on the fairways.
I have not played this course in 13 years, but the north course is the nicer layout. The cart girls are very friendly along with the staff. In the summer, the temperatures can get above the 90s so you might want to bring a few beverages.
The greens in August were being worked on - so not the best of conditions. Overall the couse is in fine shape- but nothing to write home about. Feels very much like any city muni course but for $50 on Friday morning- seems a good deal to me. Includes cart.
I'm only reviewing this golf course based on my experience on the day of the big UCLA v. USC football game this year. While the grounds are well-kept and everything is seemingly well taken care of even with the thousands of cars grinding up the greens and thousands more pairs of feet trampling all over the place mucking things up. The real disaster zones here are the bathrooms. I have never seen such bio-hazardous conditions especially in such beautiful surroundings (because, c'mon, the golf course as well as the hilly woodsy area around it is truly beautiful). In the past I had wondered at how clean and well-stocked these bathrooms stayed on game day but this year all of my previous conceptions have been shattered. After several hours of binging, boozing and schmoozing, after the majority of game-goers had already migrated into the Rose Bowl stadium, I thought it'd be a good idea to hit up the bathrooms now that the lines to wait to pee had vanished.
I'm going to spare everyone the extreme details of what I found inside the bathrooms (both mens and womens sides) but I've never before run so fast from something while desperately trying not to vomit up all the delicious whiskey I'd recently consumed. I think I am forever traumatized. The toilets were all FULL (to the brim!) with things I would rather not mention but if you can imagine it, it was probably in there. I had to hold my breath and try to pee in one of the urinals. The next time I had to pee I didn't dare make another attempt at the bathrooms and instead found a deserted portion of fence and popped a squat. I don't understand how maintenance could have been so remiss to not ensure that the plumbing and sewage systems were not in tip top operating condition in preparation for such a huge influx of people.
I think i would've had better luck if I'd stuck with the porta-potties.

Nothing bad or good about this course. It's pretty wide open, a few interesting holes, the occasional water or drainage ditch hazard. I'd say its a little over priced for what it is.
This is no matter what anyone says - a 36 hole city facility that is on par with Griffith Park and other muni courses - nothing more. The rates of $35+ weekday and $50+ weekend are far too excessive for what you're getting here.
Course number one - Koiner - is the nicer one, but course 2 has some good strategically placed bunkers. After the entire remodel of the course not 6 months ago adding much better bunkers and sodding the fingers - it seems to be a better layout than it was a year or two ago.
That being said they park cars here for the UCLA football games on the fairways in the fall and the course really gets absolutely trashed to the point where you wouldn't pay me to play here.
Also they have lights on the first 4 holes which can be cumbersomely ugly when you're playing at 2pm on a Tuesday instead of a 5am round Sat morning.
Great large golf course, and it is well kept. I played course #2 with 3 buddies and we enjoyed it. The only gripe i had was that we constantly had to wait.(place is really slow).... the course was supercrowded on a saturday.
One of the better courses I played on in the LA area... and its location is great right next to the rose bowl.

Great course in a great area. But it is just one only a few in the area. I mean if you want the underpriced municipal course rounds, you either go here, Santa Anita and/or Griffith Park. During UCLA football season, the course becomes a parking lot for games...then it takes a few days for the course to recover from the car damage.
Brookside has a couple of courses, the Koiner course, the harder of the two at 7037 yards and the easier E.O. Nay course at 6046 yards. The courses are usually kept in great condition. It's a confusing track to walk around in. Seems that the courses overlap one another. Make sure you have your scorecard and an extra. Because that's a map of the course, and if you lose it...you going to be lost.
Much like other courses in the area, the wait here can take a long time. Then on top of that, the time it takes to finish 18 can be long as well. At least the clubhouse is huge and there's plenty of places to hang out for your after round drink. There's also a nice range on the premises. But on some days, the range does not open until 9:00am. And what do you do if you have an early morning round. For an expensive place like Brookside, a place which tries to set itself apart from other munis, that range should be open at dawn.
For most players of lesser skill, or beginners...they should play E.O. Nay course, which if you have skill, you don't really need to use the driver. The course is really tree lined and they grow the rough pretty high so accuracy off the tee is a must. Overall, it's your usual parkland type course which is always in good condition.
Last, the starters there or the people at the desk are the most unhappy group of guys in the world. Some of them are gigantic tools. Look for the albino dude there, that guy is a complete angry pud.
So no, this is not one of the best places to play at. Too many locals, too many golf groups here, too many middle aged Viagra filled white men here....but I love driving the ball 50 yards past all of them.

This is a solid golf course. The place is ridiculously crowded like every other decent course in southern California, so it's pretty tough to walk-on. The grounds are well kept and maintenanced. 5 of the 36 holes have water hazards that are definitely in play. Good view of mountains, and fairly large. Not recommended for novice players because of the player traffic.

I have been here many times when I was learning golf 4yrs ago. Its not bad on weekdays. I went recently and is was not crowded. Parking can be hit or miss. They have a air-conditioned cafe/lounge. The range is cool. $6.00 bucks gets you 70 balls. All automated which is great. unlike Santa anita. Good mix of people here.
Good courses, but crowded on the weekend (5-6 hour rounds are common) and expensive (around $50 to walk). There are better choices for golf.
Big golf course next to the Rosebowl. I've only played here in the fall and was dissapointed by the condition. Of course the main reason is due to UCLA football - the golf course turns into a parking lot on game days.
