Brooklyn, NY
This is probably my favorite business in the neighborhood. They have a decent, eclectic and thoughtful selection of meats and cheeses, which I'd never expect to find in Clinton Hill. They also do a great job at sourcing local products--from bagels (from Bergen Bagels) to pastries (from Balthasar). And their sandwiches are also fantastic!
It's not the cheapest place around, but it's not unreasonable at all either. And the quality of everything I've had--from spicy pickles to salmon--has always been impressive.
Hopefully this place does well and continues to expands its selections. I'd love to see them add beer. -

Nice spot to grab a sandwich and coffee or pastry on the way home. The Beavy sandwich (cheese and chutney) is delicious and a pretty good deal.
Along with your snack, pick up a special grocery item or two -- maybe ravioli or ice cream or some chicken, or some fancy butter with sea salt, the subject of not one, but two separate enthusiastic conversations between myself and one of the employees. Or, yknow, a coffee mug, why not.
I'd like to see a more varied set of sandwich options (come on, the store is full of cheese!) and -- as a late riser, it takes a lot for me to say this -- I wish they opened earlier! Locavores and fair trade fans have morning commutes, too! -

Let me say up front that I don't go to BVG for coffee and pastries. (I noticed some of the negative reviews point out how expensive these items are, and I bet that's true.)
I go for the meat. In fact, I get just about all of my meat and milk at BVG, and cheese for special occasions. There is no doubt that the food is more expensive here... but the fact is that grass-fed, local, sustainably/ humanely raised animal products just *cost* more. A single, small, Hudson Valley farmer is obviously going to have to charge more for their product then the big, multinational food corporations that stock every grocery store. Yelp isn't the place to get into why I think local food is important for my family: total personal choice. But all of that probably has bearing on the sticker shock some folks describe in the negative reviews.
BVG has a great selection of local beef, poultry and cured meat products in the store, and as of a few weeks ago you can order specialty meats direct from local farmers with whom BVG has partnered. Recently I purchased ground buffalo meat, ground pork, and some bone-in pork chops, all grass-fed, humanely raised and DELICIOUS!
For those who have searched, it's really hard to find grass-fed pork (plus other more exotic meats like buffalo) in BK, or, for that matter, anywhere in NYC. BVG also carries non-homogenized milk, cultured butter, the best yogurt I've ever tasted, and tons of dry goods including pasta, pickles, chocolates, etc.
If local food isn't your bag, then BVG probably isn't for you. But for those in my camp, BVG is as refreshing and welcoming as a day trip to an upstate farm, without the hassle of a zipcar. -

Cheese and gifts? Give me a break, please. The last thing the egregiously underserved Fulton Avenue needs is some ridiculously overpriced, cutesy amenities joint. How about a solid provisions place (a la Greene Grape's) or a halfway decent gourmet deli instead? 'Brooklyn Victory Garden' is just too damn specific and coy. I have no reason to shop here.
What's next for Clinton Hill? A bedazzler and a balloon concession? Let's hope so! -

I love this place. For all the folks complaining about affordability, there are numerous places in the neighborhood to get the sorts of affordable food you are talking about. However, unless you belong to the newly opened co-op, there is no place to get the quality of meat that BVG carries. And their prices for such quality meat are actually not that bad. They also offer other products that are hard or impossible to find in our neighborhood. Do i wish they were as big as Green Grape? Of course, but until then I'll continue to buy meat and baked goods and dairy products from them.

Super fan of this cheese spot down my block. Local dairy farmers? yes please. Plus there's all sorts of baked treats, stationary and other vices.
One note, order more baked goods as the demand grows. I missed the last baked round a couple days ago and snagged the last one today at 4pm.. many of the baskets were empty with 4 hours to go in the evening.
plus there were cuties at the door to great me today. awe.

In the same increasingly contrived vein of BK-centric distributors (BK Farmacy, GGP, etc.), BVG is a primarily locally-sourced little shop with designer items including Blue Marble Pints, Sour Puss Pickles, Balthazar and Amy's Bread starches, and Baked cookies. It has a bit of a self-righteous air to it, with super friendly folks behind the counter and the kind of mindset that left me with a sense of I-can-afford-this-and-probably-don't-even-truly-ap preciate it White guilt. Fortunately, the $3 oatmeal cookie from baked left me unconcerned with this for a few tasty minutes.
While I'm sure they have some cliched explanation for the moniker, I don't see any WWII-caliber virtue in this endeavor. -

You know, I loved this neighborhood when it was an affordable little area with regular Maxwell House coffee and Wonder Bread on the grocery store shelves. I never needed a PhD to shop for cheese until recently...
This store is actually a cute little hole in the wall with a nice variety of not so ordinary items. Unfortunately, they're a little pricey and I really don't "need" most of what they sell. Especially since I can find similar, more affordable non-gourmet brand items at the supermarket a half block away. This store would definitely do better as an old fashioned bakery or plain old meat & fish market. That's what we needed. So I wish Brooklyn Victory Garden luck because it's not a bad place, just not the kind of place we can really use around here. -

Wonderful addition to southern Clinton Hill....nice selection of cheeses, meats, breads...all local or from responsible farms close by, and an assortment of one of a kind gifts. The owners are a nice couple who live in the nabe and are very knowledgable and friendly.
Radness personified! -

This review is solely based on the customer service that I received. I have a way of becoming fixated with completing a task. Most recently, I've decided that I want to be a beer making master blaster. In order to fulfill this new obsession, I decided I needed to buy a kit. Brooklyn Brew Co. was supposed to be posted up at the Flea, but I went a few times and never saw them. Luckily I found that BK Victory Garden sold kits so I called in advance to make sure they carried it. When I called they were super nice and because she wasn't quite sure she had them in stock she put me on hold to check and to also see what flavors they had in stock. Doesn't sound like much, but customer service these days is a thing of the past. When I went later in the day to pick it up I thought the shop was cute enough. Though I realized she only had to step about 8 feet to "check the inventory," she still took the time out to do so.

I am very happy this place opened a half block from my apartment! I stopped in on Sunday night on my way down to Greenlight Bookstore to get a gift for a friend, and decided to make a small pit stop just to check out this new shop. I knew they sold (really delicious-looking) baked goods and dairy products, but I did not know they sold really cute jewelry and other assorted gifts. I ended up buying a really adorable name plate bracelet and two pairs of stud earrings for my friend who was originally getting a book. The extremely friendly proprietor wrapped my gifts in a nice little box and little corked bottles for the earrings. AND both items were really affordable (and I'm fairly cheap). I am really looking forward to stopping in here this upcoming holiday season for lots of little gifts. Well, my next stop-in will probably be more cheese and bread related.
Reeeally happy to support a small, local business that in turn stocks local artisans and suppliers, also. -

THIS IS MY FAVORITE. I am literally here at least once a day, sometimes more. Coffee, cheese, baked goods, even gifts & cards! My total one-stop-shop, and the staff couldn't be any nicer. LOVE that it is around the corner from my apartment. Don't ever change, BVG.

I was so thrilled when I heard that this business was open on Fulton Street. My friends had been talking about it for weeks and I finally made my way over this past Saturday.
It was a bitter cold weekend in January and I felt like a warmth came over me when I walked into Brooklyn Victory Garden. One of the owners was in the store at the time and she couldn't have be kinder or friendlier to us. She was attentive without being pushy and was very knowledgable about her products.
The cheese selection wasn't tremendous, but had just the right amount of options and local! The breads are supplied by Amy's Bread and BV was able to stock a few options. I left with a baguette, a sour dough boule, and a special sourdough twist that had dark chocolate mixed into it. YUMMY!
It was such a nice surprise to see that they also started selling some locally made artwork, jewelry, and housewares. A great place to stop if you want to get a gift for a hostess or a friend.
I am so happy this place has arrived in the neighborhood. Locally stocked and locally owned= a wonderful experience for your mind and belly :) -

seriously, the owners are the nicest people ever .. so it hurts me a bit to say this .. but this place is so not needed in this area.
Maybe it's because I don't understand the local food obsession enough,
but things are expensive and in some cases just plain silly .
I think people in the area have an obsession with their neighborhood turning into a gentrified boring oasis , we get too excited over these kind of things. In alot of the cases the items in the store are more driven by the story than the actual product .
'This is local from this guy who lives down the block and this is from this spot where this guy makes this by hand '
It's like we have a fetish for small town USA townie-ism, where we knew our local butchers name .
Yes those things are kind of important ,
but when they were a part of small town USA they didn't alienate 85% of the local neighborhood with exorbitant pricing.
There's a lingering elitism that frustrates me about this movement.
Don't buy into this fancy (we wish we had it in brooklyn) manhattan bread.
Walk down the block find a real bakery and fulfill your Americana town-centric fantasy.
UPDATE: Message from Yelp Reviewer who is the owner of this establishment
"I totally understand your review. Seriously, I do. I'm not a foodie myself, nor do I like the elitism involved with the whole local food movement. Those people frighten me with their, "these cocoa beans were ground by virgins and blessed by Mayan high priests," etc. It should just be food, right?
To address your criticism of high prices, I also agree. The sad fact is this small/local/whatever-you-want-to-call-it farm movement has not been nearly as helped out with gov't subsidies as big agri-business. What we hope will happen is that small farm production/consumption becomes enough of a common, everyday economic force to be able to organize and afford lobbyists who push for more beneficial legislation, and thereby (hopefully) drive the cost of this food down. It just has to start somewhere."

I literally love everything about this new addition to the neighborhood. I have been supporting the store since they first opened in the fall, and have been increasingly impressed with it every day since. They have fresh delivered Amy's Bread and Balthazaar baked goods every morning (rumor is that Bergen's Bagels are on the way as well)- it's perfect to stop in and grab with juice/coffee (they sell both) on the way to the train.
Also, they sell a variety of local (tri-state area) cheeses, meats, and desserts. And if you ask politely, the owners are not shy about giving out samples! It feels wonderful to have people that really care about food quality and customer care stocking the shelves.
I couldn't speak the praises of this husband-wife duo any higher if I tried. -

Just discovered it on Sunday during a walk did not buy anything yet but I am VERY excited by the breads (Amy's bread, delivered daily, I have always been a fan) and the lavish selection of cheeses (they have Consider Bardwell from Vermont, they used to be at the Fort Greene Greeenmarket and they are sorely missed!) so I am going tonight for my Thanksgiving nibbles shopping and to look some more... A very welcome addition to Fulton street!
