Brooklyn, NY
I'm really only writing this as a response to all the hate BKS has been getting on here.
1.) The last time I checked, bagels are a breakfast item - so sorry that they don't have any at 4pm.
2.) If any of the cashiers are rude or short with you, it is probably because you're being difficult or extremely annoying. I don't expect people that have never worked a service job in their life to understand. Keep in mind that Brooklyn Standard's cashiers work 8-9hrs straight and are dealing with HUNDREDS of transactions a day. No one should expect them to have perma-smiles.
3.) Their delivery people ride bikes. If your lazyass is ordering from Williamsburg, then yeah, it'll take awhile.
4.) Please keep in mind that there is usually only TWO people working at a time. One cashier and one cook. This isn't McDonalds. Don't expect it to be.
5.) Brooklyn Standard offers amazing organic and vegan treats. Their prices aren't what you'd see at a regular bodega, but at the same time, this ain't your run of the mill bodega. If you don't like it, you don't have to be a patron. JUST SAYING. -

Brooklyn, NY
I almost never write reviews. If I do, I try to make them positive. But I am absolutely done.
All the negative reviews on here are dead on as far as my experience with Brooklyn Standard has been over the last year or so. So yes, it has taken me almost one year to decide to write this.
I think it's really cool that they have fresh, local, vegan and artisanal products. How frequently they keep them stocked is a completely different story.
I've been incredibly hungover (many times) and called for breakfast before (at a reasonable, breakfast time), only to be rudely told varying items in the menu are unavailable. Ive received incomplete deliveries, with not much consolation at the inconvenience. Also, I live nearby, in Greenpoint, so if it's going to take 45-1 hour to deliver a few items, at least give me a heads up. I'd understand if I was ordering from further away, like Williamsburg, but even then I can't pardon them for, quite frankly, doing a shit job, especially when I tip more than I ever should.
(Total is $11 something, I ask for a five back, he says he only has two dollars. COOL.)
The inconsistency of the menu options along with other reviewers mention of the cashiers attitudes when purchasing from this store has finally become a large enough annoyance.
I work in the service industry, and I work 9-10 hours, and I'm on my feet all day, and while I may not wear a perma smile, I am not ever rude or act inconvenienced that someone is asking me to do my job.
I am not asking them to do something that they didn't sign up for. I live in the neighborhood, I've been in many times, courtesy and customer service is really not asking a whole lot, especially in New York, where there are plenty of options.
It would be great if I could LOVE this place.
I won't be relying on Brooklyn Standard as a consistent, reliable deli.
I will however, rely on the polish/neighborhood diners around the area who actually appreciate my business. -

Currently, I'm exiled in Greenpoint for work (don't ask...). I'm a girl, with a corporate card, in need of lunch. Or coffee. Or both.
Delivery is available via Seamless. It's fast-- way faster than the 30-45 minute window listed. The order was accurate (two sandwiches, 2 beverage, one thing of chips). My tuna nicoise sandwich was good. I scarfed it in a rush. What I remember seeing was good. Bread was good. I'd eat it again. Prices were fine, I think, but frankly, I wasn't paying attention.
Like every other freaking place, they have Stumptown. I apparently am the only person on the planet who freaking hates Stumptown. Less for its flavor and more for a host of associations it conjures. Whatever. Even though this coffee is Stumptown, it's OK. The coffee prices went up significantly recently-- a small coffee, which is actually quite small, is $1.50 now, up from $1. I'll still keep drinking it, and for basic coffee, I prefer Brooklyn Standard over the Cafe Royal, which is basically right up the street.
So, fine place for sandwiches and coffee. -

At first I had high hope for this place after years of living in Greenpoint this place has got nothing but more and more awful!
1. The Service sucks. Cashiers for the most part are so rude!
2. Price is horribly high!
3. Sandwhiches are ok. Bread sucks.
On a Nice point
The Sandwich makers are very nice and are the only redeeming quality of Standard.
Get rid of the very skinny women with a buzz cut. I have never met someone that hates where they work more then her. When ever I would see her at work I would turn and walk away. Same feeling for Cafe Royal! -

Full disclosure, I worked at The Standard for a few months a couple of years ago. I see where a lot of the complaints are coming from, but at the same time I have to disagree. It's hard to comment on the staff because the turnover rate is pretty high there, but when I was there everyone was incredibly friendly and fun and so were the customers! The cooks are super nice guys who make good food and the selection of local products is a total score. Also, every Tuesday they get all of their vegan treats in which is awesome. The prices are a bit high though.
Oh, and don't be mad at the delivery guys for taking too long. Everyone who delivers for The Standard is also simultaneously delivering for Papacitos and Cafe Royal so they're stretched a bit thin. Maybe not the best system, buy why shoot the messenger (or deliverer)? -

When I think of what "standard" means, I think of something that is completely consistent and dependable.
Brooklyn Standard is not this.
It's great that they sell Stumptown coffee, but it's only on their shelves 50% of the time. Their weekday evening prepared food is delicious, but at least once a week, they don't have it for one reason or another. And I'm thankful for their gluten-free desserts, but again, only available on certain, random days.
I live close by and have spent a lot of money at BS and really do appreciate them being around, but there is nothing standard, consistent or dependable about this enterprise.1 Previous Review: Show all »

It can be... nay, it IS infuriating having to put up with clueless art school drop out cashiers with no concept of customer service in their closed, abstract brains, especially while the hard working, uncomplaining Hispanic crew knocks it out on the short order grill... which, long story short, can be worth the heartache for a huge biscuit with egg and ham. DO NOT buy the crazy over-priced beer... walk 1/4 block and get the same 6-pack for $5 less. I'm not trying to be a hater of a good idea and a needed remodel of the corner deli, but customer service and a competitive price-point is essential.

I am a huge fan of Brooklyn Standard. I order a lot and I am happy that they deliver and accept credit card.
They are extremely nice on and off the phone.
ALL of the vegan sandwiches are delicious (and believe me, I have had them ALL)
Their vegan cookies are great
The delivery guys/gals are all super nice and efficient
You can order bodega items and have them delivered
I stop for bagels and coffee all the time because I LOVE IT!
This place is just an all-around good local spot to enjoy good food. Major kudos to the genius's that started Brooklyn Standard - whoever you are, I am extremely impressed with your good service and good eats. -

The sandwiches here are great, but this place is seriously terrible about stocking bagels.
Guys, I'm not the one that owns a mini-chain of fancy white people restaurants, but if I owned a deli that offered bagels and we ran out of bagels so often that my staff told would-be customers that we "always run out of bagels", I would try progressively increasing my bagel order until I didn't run out of fucking bagels. But, I mean, what do I know, I'm just some asshole that expects this place to have bagels and is consistently disappointed that they don't.
Another star when they figure out how to order enough bagels to last through a Sunday. -
Review from Sam G.
Ehhhhh. What?
Had a veggie rubin and the veggie bahn mi and both were unrecognizable - miles away from their namesakes. Thoroughly confused at the tastelessness, the slabs of tofu, and the skimpiness of the remaining fillings. Lots of bread (ok, but not great quality) and not much else.
Healthful? Not particularly. Somehow a lot of grease (maybe from the fried tofu?). Not a lot of veggies. I felt like an overweight celiac after splitting the sandwiches with my buddies.
And yup, as stated in other reviews, hot meal bar was randomly unavailable.
Had it delivered and it came nice and hot, even in the rain (always a plus - and many thanks to the lad on a bike for braving the weather).
In the land of superb delis, I'm wondering how this place survives. -
Review from Erica J.
Brooklyn Standard offers a wide variety of Vegan/Vegetarian sandwiches, as well as a full menu of meat-based sandwiches, vegan baked goods, and now, a bunch of gluten-free baked goods. While I'm disappointed that the vegan cakes, whoopie pies, etc. come all the way from Vegan Treats, and thus aren't housemade, the sandwiches here are really good. Some of the veganized options might be a little lackluster minus their cheese components, but overall a satisfying menu. The portobello sandwich is very good on a hearty multigrain roll.
The Standard is open pretty late, and reportedly has a hot food bar in the evenings (though I've never seen it). There's no place to sit, so you'll have to take your sandwich to-go and sit in beautiful McGolrick park. -

This place has become my default weekend lunch place. Been going down the list of sandwiches to try them all.
The turkey avocado sandwich is seriously tasty.
I like that you can get a small cup of Stumptown coffee for $1. -

$2.75 for a bottle of Honest Tea? Lame. Met Food down the block sells it for $1.50. It's like they're not even trying to hide how much price gouging they're doing.
Still haven't gone for the coffee, I generally prefer not to patronize BS if I have other options (Cafe Royal across the street or Variety on Driggs), just on principle.
I might consider back if they get some seating or something and improve the quality of their sandwiches. Other than that, yeah, Stumptown coffee and local foods, but I can get those elsewhere, pay a lot less and not have to wait for the three hipsters hogging the one wooden bench outside to move their bikes so I can sit down.1 Previous Review: Show all »

WOW! I am totally surprised by the bashing of the Standard.
We live and work super close to them... so when they moved in the staff where super excited. There is not much to eat around these parts during the day. All I know is everyone literally eat there daily- two or three times a day for months on end with nothing but mmmm's and yummmm's coming from their overly full mouths.
As for myself. It's a healthy like deli. Why all the hate people?
I would say we do lunch/dinner/breakfast with them three to six times a month and I have never, not once, had a bad food experience. I order mainly the vegetarian options like that Jerk Seitan sandwich-- there is simply nothing like it anywhere around here. My friend is duly committed to the Turkey Avocado sandwich and my husband is forever ordering the Bacon, egg, and cheese on the world's largest country biscuit. Oh-- and that vegan potato salad, I can not leave there with out it. I buy a small container and make it with breakfast for the next couple of days. It's amazing.
And it really isn't that expensive either I have never spent more than 6 to 9 dollars in there on anything. Where are you eating that you can get organic, locally grown or produced, fresh food for cheaper?
You can pay with debit or credit.
Coffe not the best, it's a bit bitter for my taste.
I'd stay away from the grocery items seems overpriced.
Order hot food- that's where they rule.
The delivery kid rocks! He is truly adorable and friendly.
The cashier chick--ok-- I'll give you that no matter who is running that cashier and phone-- they are rude, kinda like whatever attitude, but you get in and you get out. -

I like going there because of their vegan products! It is right by my house and so it is pretty convenient. It is definitely a place where locals hang out/shop, so it gives it even more an appeal and character. One thing that sometimes throw me off is that they are a bit overpriced, for things that are not even organic/vegan, just an average bagel, for example.
But that aside, it is a great store! -

I really don't get all the negative reviews here - I love me some Brooklyn Standard. They are a little oasis of pure deliciousness on the otherwise barren and gross Seamless Web listing of delivery restaurants in Greenpoint.
Full disclosure: I have only had delivery and have never been to the store. But our deliveries have always arrived reasonably quickly, with a smile, from a nice hipster wearing a bike helmet. I love that their delivery guys are NOT like most of the other delivery a-holes who cannot figure out the intercom system and insist we haul our cookies all the way downstairs to pick up our food. Brooklyn Standard brings it right to our door, usually around 20-30 minutes from the time we order.
My favorites: their hot sandwiches make my tummy jump for joy. Particularly the turkey & avocado sandwich (WOW..craving one right now), and my hubby loves the bacon one with cheddar and onions (I have sampled and am also a fan), Their cookies are fresh and delicious and their side items are also super yum - the hummus is ridiculous. I have to say that they often seem to be out of certain items when we order, which is usually late evening, but they are really nice about giving us a call right away to offer a replacement. Also, they're really reasonably priced...sandwiches around $8, sides ranging from $2-$4.
Bottom line - stop hating on this place, yelpers. It's awesome. -

I actually love Brooklyn Standard, but sometimes their staff is not very helpful, bordering on rude.
Wish you guys would step it up--I've seen a lot of great places go under for lesser reasons and I don't want to feel like I'm putting someone out every time I place an order. -

clean up in the jerk aisle! Kick rocks food dorks.
say what you wish about the prices and the staff...the guy who brought me what I ordered was pretty swell...and for 30$ for two people with the amount of food was received left us both full...with leftovers.
Ive never cared much for Mustard based potato salad...and being a chef... I have to say the crew at brooklyn standard nailed it...the hot sandwiches I ordered were pretty much on par with with words like "remarkable" and "amazing" They were also kind enough to call us to let us know that they were out of a particular item we ordered and asked what we would like to replace it with...after we ordered online....how polite...tremendous customer service goes a long way these days.
Kudos. -

I love their prepared food from the hot bar m-f. i dont know of anywhere else in the neighborhood that offers a selection of vegetarian options like that - its usually one main veg dish, but then a whole bunch of different kinds of sides. i can stuff my large container and it usually ends up costing $11-13, which is not bad at all for restaurant quality food. I go there minimum once a week for this, sometimes more.
otherwise, yes, the things in there are over priced - but thats just kind of the store it is.
the guys that actually make the food and dish out the hot stuff are all super friendly and helpful - the people running the cashier - suck. rude. unfriendly. not sure what their problem is, but i put up with it for the yum hot food.
4/18 - i am down grading a star. since i started eating some meat i have tried their chicken from the hot bar a couple times and its not good at all. i still like their veggies, although they are very salty. -

The Standard is fine. I find the prices on prepared foods a little high, so I tend to avoid. I stand by egg sandwiches in the morning, $1 cup of solid Stumptown coffee, and an occasional vegan banh mi or portobello sandwich. Totally fine.
I've had problems with soggy sandwiches when I ordered for take out - even when I arrived promptly. Timing seems hard here, so that may be part of the problem. I also avoid getting anything complicated during weekday mornings since the counter can move way slower than expected. It took me close to 10 minutes to get a regular cup of coffee at 11am on a weekday a few weeks ago with one other guy in line before me. This is unusual, but not as much as I'd like. -

Brooklyn, NY
All around the food is good, and they make an excellent breakfast sandwich that is hard to beat. Prices are hit or miss, but what did you expect?
I like the staff. And fuck me, that Portobello sandwich is tasty. The baked goods are incredible. Try the monster cookie. Or the Peanut Butter Bomb. Hell, it's ALL good.
In regard to all the negatives floating around here:
If you want super quick and friendly delivery, don't order during lunch/dinner rush, and don't order during bad weather (because, clearly, that's when everyone else is hungry, and the delivery courier rides a bike. He/She can only move so fast.)
Avoid the online delivery fees by calling in your order--You'll also be able to avoid ordering things that are out of stock. It's a little store. That sort of thing happens.
And honestly, if you care about your bagel, don't ask the cashier to make it for you. -

Low Standards. I placed an order with The Standard to have food delivered to my work. They said it would take about 30 min. 62 min later stil no food, so I called them back. They assured me that the food was on its way. The food finally shows up luke warm, small proportions and lacking silverware. I did not have any silverware at work, so tired to call the delivery person back on the cell phone number that they had just called me on to see if I could get a fork from them. No answer. So I called the restaurant back. I explained to them they I was at work and really needed a fork to eat the food. They informed me that it was getting close to the end of the delivery person's shift, and that they'd bring me a fork if they could. They assured me that they would call me back and let me know. That was 40 min ago. I haven't heard from them, so now I am posting this review.
UPDATE: I called them back again and spoke with Ashley. She confirmed that they would NOT be brining me a fork, but offered to comp me a free sandwich next time I ordered. -

These sandwiches are awesome. Best I've had in Williamsburg. All unique in their own way. Have ordered many times via Seamless. My favs are the Turkey Avocado and the Jerked Seitan (even meatlovers will appreciate this one). Potato Salad rocks too. A definite go-to for healthy food in the Burg.

If only there were some way for Brooklyn Standard to inform customer about how much a particular product costs... Hmm, a labeling system perhaps, that indicates the cost of an item so that when, say you're thinking about purchasing a 6 pack of beer you're not completely shocked when you reach the counter and the girl tells you that, in fact, these 6 beers sell for 18 dollars (for the record I didn't buy). Someone, somewhere, perhaps in a think tank, hopefully can come up with a way to do this.
My sandwich was OK though. -

Yuck! Had a gross experience here this morning. We walked in right when they opened. The girl at the counter let us know the cook had not arrived yet. We asked if she could do bagels with cream cheese and she said, "I can do that."
We ordered and she walked to the back where I thought for sure she would be washing her hands. She was on the register when we came in, obviously finishing the process of opening the store (moving things, touching equipment, etc...).
In the back she ran her hand through her hair, grabbed a couple knives, and DID NOT wash her hands or put on gloves. She then came back, handled our bagels, and put them in the toaster. While the bagels toasted, she went to the register and handled some money. When the bagels were ready she ran her hand through her hair again, and without any gloves or hand washing first, applied the cream cheese. As a finishing touch she wiped her nose right before taking care of our tea.
We were bummed. I come in fairly regularly, so at this point I decided not to make an issue of it. We left and threw out the bagels around the corner.
This place could be cool if the owner actually trained his employees about food handling and customer service in general. Seem like it would be in his best interest, because the way it is right now is embarrassing. I've had other laughably bad experiences here but I come back because it's local to me, the hot food in the evenings is good, and the guy that makes the sandwiches is cool.
Please get it together. -

New York, NY
I mean, I kind of have to be thankful for this place, if only because it torpedoes my half-baked theory that virtually no restaurants in New York, especially pretty new ones, are really BAD if you're just talking about having food be kind of acceptable.
And it takes a lot for me to say that some more or less standard sandwich sucks, but the cuban jalapeno kinda does. Instead of getting that kind of cubano sandwich you expect, you taste dead ham and pickle on mushy bread. Gross. Someone else has mentioned that problem with this sandwich, so it doesn't seem like a one-off thing. This was the first actual thing of food by them that I've eaten, other than the hot vegetable bar, which I found to be good but too expensive. The third-party stuff I've had is more of that. The cookies they sell are great. Maybe this really should be seen as a place where you get other places' better stuff.
Also, every time I've interacted with people there, they've been professional, nice, and talkative in a good way. I get people's criticisms about the positioning of this place, but at least as far as the employees are concerned, I've found no problems here. I'll definitely go back just for that and probably try a french dip or something to see if that cuban's just a fluke.
But that sandwich really did suck. -
Review from Ryan B.
After my first few experiences at the Brooklyn Standard, I wanted to come on here and furiously chide them for their lackluster service and overpriced items. Alas, like a good little Yelper, I've given them dozens of chances sine then, before I publicly posted my opinions. Unfortunately, my opinion hasn't changed much in my half-year of living down the block.
There are a few positives I'd like to point out, before getting into my serious gripes with this convenient little shoppe that I've WANTED to love, but simply cannot. First and foremost, You've gotta dig on their selection of local artisanal products that we Brooklynites love so much. I'm talking Stumptown Coffee, Van Leeuwen, Brooklyn Brine, Slantshack Jerky, BK Kombucha, Local Organic Dairy Products, et cetera. They have a great selection of all that kinda stuff, but it's all pricey, like the rest of the store. The sandwiches and prepared salads are all relatively creative and tasty, but you can get similar products all over northern Brooklyn for cheaper. I'm pretty sure you pay extra to see words like "aoli" on the menu, and for the Adirondack chair out front. I must point out that I have had a few nice experiences in there with the staff. For example, I just needed a small amount of milk one time, and didn't have $5 on me to purchase their organic free range hudson valley quart of milk (the only option). Very kindly, the girl behind the counter hooked me up with a coffee cup full of said sustainable milk for $1. Thanks lady! Sadly, %75 of the times I go into The Brooklyn Standard, I get the vibe that the people behind the counter couldn't possibly feel less enthused.
My #1 gripe with this store is their breakfast. All of their breakfast sandwiches are at least $1 more than any other deli on the block, and I can't say the ingredients justify the price. Their bacon, egg and cheese is pathetic. Literally, two measly strips of what seemed to be microwave bacon. I am usually still hungry after eating breakfast there. Would you care for an orange juice with that? No joke, three dollars for a 6 oz bottle of OJ, five dollars for 12 0z bottle. It looks high-grade, but c'mon, I need a cheaper option. Tropicana will usually do me just fine. Especially when I'm paying $4 for two small eggs and two strips of bacon on a tiny roll. The coffee is the only saving grace. Oh, and no credit card minimum.
Overall....."meh. I've experienced better". Will I be back? Sure, I'll stop in from time to time to grab a a few quick things, or a sandwich. I just don't expect service with a smile, or any great deals.Listed in: Greenpoint favorites, coffee spots

Soft, delicious focaccia
Egg
White Cheddar
Huge piece of bacon (rectangle, cool)
Tomato Gastrique
Oven dried cherry tomatoes
Grilled onions
Mayo
It's...killer. Brooklyn Standard is the PERFECT place to buy picnic goods. They've got an assortment of salad items, sandwiches, and most importantly....Stumptown Coffee! They also offer a ton of organic and local produce and cheeses for you locavores or organic-vores. I just invented a word. There's also a hot bar that seems to be 90% devoted to vegan food. The service was smiley and efficient, the space was bright and pleasant. I really wish there was a store like this near me. No frills but 100% quality.Listed in: The Greenpoint Chapter, I did it all for the coffee.

I wouldn't bother going here for anything other than coffee and a bagel.
After debating for 40 minutes with my boyfriend about where to get breakfast/lunch, we finally decided just to go here and get bagels. Of course, if it's after noon, this place is almost always out of bagels. I was so hungry I was starting to get testy, so I decided against my better judgement to try one of the sandwiches when I noticed they added a French Dip sandwich.
I could have sworn the description said something like "thinly sliced roast beef, melted swiss cheese, caramelized onions and au jus." I asked for it without onions, get home and open my sandwich to find a sandwich that's 50% onions, with SEITAN, some cheese and a mayo-based sauce on some kind of 90-grain bread. I don't mind seitan, but make it clear that you're serving seitan, don't call it roast beef. It's neither roast beef, nor thinly sliced.
I don't even think it was under a "vegan/vegetarian" header, I think it was just on a sign that talked about new sandwiches. I didn't get any au jus, and there was no mention of mayo in the description at all (and I hate mayo). If you are vegan or vegetarian, there are way better options in the city and even in the neighborhood.
I'm so mad right now about paying $8 for this sandwich that I literally yelled in frustration and scared my cats. Look what you did, Brooklyn Standard. I want my eight bucks back. -

Brooklyn Standard is weird. I appreciate the fact that they have so many vegan options and snacks (especially Dunwell donuts!), but they're so inconsistent and unpleasant that it's kind of a chore to even get myself to go. Today I went in hoping to get a bagel, but was told they were all out. Okay...so I got a donut, which was delicious. The last time I was here I got the vegan bahn-mi, which was so incredibly greasy and at the same time bland that I had a hard time finishing it. Also, the people who work there are kind of miserable and rude. Whatever - BS is okay from time to time, but unless there are some major changes I can't see myself going out of my way for this place.

I'm so happy to see I am not alone here. Especially Peter H.!
I'm in a similar position, I live down the block, thought it would be a nice change to go to The Standard instead of a bodega for some coffee and an egg sandwich. But...this place is just so...disappointing. In every way. Overpriced. Slow. Jerks at the counter (though there's one girl who has been nice and friendly 50% of the time, so that's ...still not good.)
So I've been there at least 10 times. God knows why. Temporary insanity? Hoping against hope? The last three times my egg sandwich was so over-peppered I had to throw it away. Seriously disgusting. And if you're so proud of your vegan sandwiches why don't you have more vegan/vegetarian breakfast options? At least Forest Natural as thought that much about their menu.
Also, you're NOT bodega. Your three candy bars and box of flints for sale do not qualify you as a convenience store, mkay?
I'm sick of their schtick. -

Maybe they're trying to do too much at Brooklyn Standard. I appreciate the sentiment - I do. I would love to have a place to purchase unprepared and prepared organic foods, coffee, sweets, etc but something is just not quite working.
The vegetables look kind of funky. And with so many places to buy fresh veggies in Greenpoint why would you go where they are far more expensive?
The coffee is soooo expensive. Once, the iced coffee, clearly burned to hell and 3 days old, induced severe gagging with just a sip. They replaced the coffee for me but hardly acknowledged that such foul coffee could have killed someone.
Brooklyn Standard's one salvation is the delicious egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and, if you have at least 1/2 hour to spare, I highly recommend fighting for counter service to order one.
I too think that I'll be back in about 6 months to see how they've worked things out. -

I was hesitant to leave this review because seriously, what's another bad review?
The worst sandwich I've ever had. Period. How do you mess up a sandwich? I feel like you have to go out of your way to make a sandwich terrible, and whoever made my sandwich tonight really went the extra mile.Listed in: My Neighborhood

The cost of the itty bitty container of local chocolate milk I purchased was $2.70. The cashier gave me a quarter as change for my $3. I would think basic math should be a prerequisite for working the counter but I wasn't going to hassle him for the nickel.
Otherwise, I really see no use for another place like this in the neighborhood. At least the guys at Forest Natural are nice. And you can get a way better selection of organic goods at Natural Garden. But if you are too prissy to make your own sandwich, I suppose his is the place for you. -

$4 for an iced coffee. Four. Dollars. Really. I don't care if it is Stumptown, we're talking deep into Greenpoint, and there's no call for price gouging like this. (Or anyplace else, for that matter.)
Not sure about anything else at Brooklyn "Standard," nor do I care to find out.
(P.S. The $4 iced coffee was at least 60% ice, and fairly weak, too.)
(P.P.S Their website is the most insufferably pretentious piece of crap I've laid eyes on in ages--because of it I'd knock them down to no stars if I could.) -

This re-write is long overdue, but Brooklyn Standard has definitely figured it out. They no longer offer the hot food selection that they did when they first opened, but that has given way to much more consistency and availability in their daily prepared food. Gone is the feeling that you're in a disorganized kitchen in someone's house. Everything has a right place, and it's easy now to zip in and out. Most of the time, I just stop in to pick up coffee beans, and it's always quick and friendly. They also allow you to phone in sandwich orders, upping the convenience factor. OH... and the cupcakes. They're dangerous.

Since it's right in my neighborhood, I was SO excited for BS to open, and now that it has been open a month, here's the review I've been waiting to write. It's definitely indicative of a new wave over on this side of McGuinness, which has nothing of the typical Brooklyn cool going on, with the exception of Grumpy, which is a little too far from my regular commute for me to frequent often. Oh, and Lucky Shot, the new and (I think) unfortunately doomed coffee shop that just opened in the old Brooklynski digs.
But I digress... first, the good: Staff is super-friendly, always... Perhaps those of you who've had trouble with service there don't smile yourselves? The guy who I think is the owner is constantly bustling about, cooking, talking to customers, suggesting items, looking at new products made in small batches by local artisans. The food is good, and homemade. Coffee is great, obviously cause it's Stumptown, and it's a relief not to have to go anywhere to get beans for home anymore.
Now for the bad: the place is in dire need of an organizational personality. It's even unclear what's for public purchase and what's for their kitchen in the back. I don't want to dig through a nightmarish version of my mom's overstuffed refrigerator to find something in her house, let alone in a store. Make it EASY for me to buy stuff! I want to, I promise.
Because of the homemade nature of their food, it can be somewhat inconsistent. When they first opened, the hummus was soooo good. The past three times I've gotten it though... It's different. Not bad, just not as good as it was.
Personally, the most annoying thing to me about the place is the feeling you get when you walk through the front door. Where should I go? What do I want? And the store doesn't help you answer those questions. The two tables in the middle are obnoxious for the shopper and I can't imagine them being a pleasant place to sit and have a cup of coffee, or eat a sandwich.
There is SO much going on here... It's supposed to be "the new bodega" but the issue with that concept is that it doesn't exclude anything. And if you're trying to do it all, at least have an organizational structure that doesn't result in an overwhelmed customer.
Brooklyn Standard has so much potential, and I hope they work out the kinks, because I want to like it so much more than I actually do. But I'll keep trying, because in this neighborhood, they've got no competition. -

Walking into the store and making an order is an ok experience.
Both times I have attempted delivery (approximately 300 yards door to door) it has taken 50-70 minutes.
Last night they changed my order twice due to being out of most of the ingredients for all of their listed sandwiches.
You may have tasty bread, but perhaps you should bake up some inventory and delivery control! -

Dang, it's hard for me to keep this objective. I just moved to a new apartment, but used to live across the street from The Standard.
Thppppt!
(phoot!)
Sorry, this is severely unprofessional. There is never ever an appropriate time to make sounds like that in a food revi...ThhhhPPPPPT!
Seeing whassisname on the Chopped Champions doesn't help. The cashier workers (as in the two lady baristas, the kickin' lady baristas) that I've met are tremendous and kind. Hard workers. We've hit a strange moment in our world, where we can no longer utter the phrase "hipster" and mean anything. I'm not calling anyone a damn hipster. Fine, owner of the Standard, keep your dogs on the benches and have vegan sandwiches and Banh Mi for a king's ransom and all that. I don't even care that the food service can be dreadful. You can do anything else; but it's the disaffected glaze, the uninterested head nod that kills me.
Here's the thing. That section of Greenpoint needs a good coffee shop. Grumpy's pretty far. Cup O' Joes nee Ellie's Cafe nee something else is perpetually closed. (More like Cup o' CLOSED! Hoowah!)) They sell Stumptown at the Standard, which isn't dreadful if you make it at home, but the watery tan junk that comes out of their two thermoses (thermi?) is utter dreck. Weak, sour, worse than deli coffee. First time in my life that I've just dumped a cup of coffee on the ground.
And the saddest thing is that I've probably had about 30 cups there. AND bought a $15 pound of coffee. To make at home. Fifteen dollars a pound. And it wasn't too great. Oh, you Standard! You have that neighborhood by the curlies! Just make a darker option for coffee or something!
Ah, maybe I'll go back and give it another shot. Maybe it's not their fault.
Look, I want to save the world too. I don't want ammonia in my beef. But kindness, enthusiasm, and maybe some tasty coffee is also important. In a damn coffee shop.
