It's funny how every review is telling men to take women here because the Brooklyn Heights Promenade has magic and miracles can happen. The first time I went here, it was because a girl brought me, and I guess the reviews are right. It does have magical powers. Before I knew it I was finding myself doing things I will never admit to anyone in person!
This is a fantastic view of the NYC Skyline. On a clear day, you can pack some sandwiches and spend hours here on the benches. It's just one of those (not so) secret spots in Brooklyn that if you don't know where to go, you just might not find it.
The street names are cute too. They're named after fruits.
Yes!
Men, take note: if you need something to melt a girl, this is it.
After listening to me bitch and complain about my craving for chinese, and then an even more awkward subway ride since I refused to speak to him, he suprised me by taking me here, and I must say, any and all tension/frustration i felt just melted away. It's a nice walk, and in a picturesque area, making it feel like your own private getaway.
And as a bonus, Noodle Pudding is right up the street!
( I endorse them wholeheartedly with no shame...go and enjoy the food)
A Recipe for Love
(yea, I just barfed on myself too)
Ingredients:
1 free trial membership to the most ghetto dating online service (we were both too cheap to actually pay for it): Nerve
1.5 boy
1 girl
10-12 hilarious email exchanges
2 nervous* phone calls
1 date on September 11, 2008
1 six pack of Miller High Life the Champagne of Beers
1 stoop
Method:
1. Throw on some clothes, adjust the make-ups, make sure Twin** has the boy's details just in case something weird happens. (Like my body washing up on Roosevelt Island.)
2. Politely roll my eyes as I have to get on the usually unreliable G to meet whom we all lovingly know as, The Foo.
3. Mess with my hair and lipgloss nervously as I wait to roll into Hoyt Street station.
4. Exit Hoyt and promptly get a phone call that my date is just down the street. (Girls, since we don't usually get picked up in a Fiero here in NYC, it's even better when your date comes to pick you up from the train. Make this a rule, if it isn't already.)
5. Smile and greet one another and nervously* banter while we walk over to Smith street for drinks.
6. Order a pitcher of Bud Light. (While we were both were a bit nervous*, I still do not know why the hell we ordered that piss, neither of us really drink beer. I am sure I was being polite, not ordering the most expensive glamorous drink, a Daiquiri.)
7. Share pretty much our life stories, the conversation was rolling, lots of laughing and the boy kept on and on repeating himself "You can leave now" like his life had been so shocking! PFFF!
8. The sun had set, so we decided to pay the tab (he paid of course) and head over to see the lights of the twin towers from the spectacular view of the promenade.
9. Along the way stopped at the bodega for some refreshing champagnes of beers. There's nothing classier than drinking out of a paper bag.
10. We found our spot on the benches overlooking Manhattan's skyline and proceeded to talk and drink and oogle the dozens (oddly enough) of standard poodles that walked by.
11. The promenade was flooded with people, tourists, remembering. It's hard to describe other than there was a definite feeling of unity. Ironic?
12. It was getting late so we wandered over to his apt to sit on his stoop.
13. Kiss!
14. Goodnight!
All-in-all a spectacular view and a spectacular way to start what I hope is a long and badass life together!
*The Foo will never admit to being nervous. Let's face it, that fool was totally intimidated.
**Twin was the one who convinced me to go manhuntin' online. I believe the wise words he once uttered were: "Beats meeting dicks in bars".
During the day it's a really nice place to go jogging and of course take pictures. On a nice Summer day it is great to sit and enjoy the view and talk and catch up with some friends. By sunset and night, it is a very awesome place to go on a date. It's quiet and you see the Manhattan skyline across the water. Even though it is a pretty romantic place at night, it is still an ideal place to set up a tripod and take pictures of the skyline. Also, in the past couple of years I've came down here to watch the fireworks on July 4th, it is a great view without any obstruction. FDR and Seaport is just way too packed, but here is just perfect!
Beautiful view of Manhattan's skyline and a perfect spot for running, jogging, biking or walking pets. A photographer or sketch artist dream for the best landscape portaits. I came here once with my Canto Meetup for a movie at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Good view of NYC's man made waterfalls in 2008 which were a complete and total waste of tax payers' hard earn money.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade is Brooklyn's treasure!
I've been coming to the Promenade since I was a little kid. Growing up in Brooklyn, and going to school right down the block at the (cough) progressive (cough) St. Ann's, we used to head to the playground during recess, or whatever.
Those of you, who have met me and, with an Eagle Eye will notice a scar under my right eye. That's from when I slipped on some sand at the Promenade playground when I was maybe 5 or 6 and landed face first on the concrete...I cried and cried and cried.
As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate the view of Lower Manhattan and the fireworks show from the Seaport (expect for this year...thanks a lot Macy's!). Whether it be Winter, Summer or in between; I can walk down to the Promenade, stare across the river and let my worries melt away.
It's a must see for a great view of lower Manhattan.
And last summer, you could see the NYC waterfalls pretty well (not that they were much to see...)
A lovely place to sit for a while with a friend or by one's self.
Try it out at 3 am someday.
The view knocks everyone out. The long design and plentiful benches make a uniquely relaxing environment which the newer & overly thought-out High Line park in Manhattan can only aspire to. The small downside is that it is cantilevered (!) over the BQE, so you do hear a constant traffic hiss at all times. It doesn't matter; this place is essential!
As a teen, I spent my summer vacations smoking menthol cigarettes, pondering the meaning of life, and gazing across the river with my guy friend on the benches.
As an adult, I spend my summer staycations smoking other green things, pondering the meaning of life, and gazing across the river with my boyfriend on the benches.
As an old lady, I will prolly spend my retirement knitting green things, pondering the meaning of life, and gazing across the river with my husband on the benches.
I like this plan.
Pretty solid, especially for an afterthought of a park built on top of a bi-level highway (and by Robert Moses, no less).
Of course, it would be hard to mess up a view like this one.
Good people watching and a great view.
Here is my tip: Find this by walking down the village streets. Do not think that just because this is on the water, you should just walk to the water and then go south. You will find yourself on a long stretch of concrete on a shady highway for at least half an hour.
I've done this twice.
a grand balcony
to watch the opera that is new york city
the crescendo of light and sound
the first act of daybreak
a fog subdued before the
traffic of
noonday sun.
mad dogs and englishmen,
everybody and their brother,
their sister, cousins ten times removed
roam about.
the metallic glint of boats,
dapper little tugboats
large clumsy children in tow.
horns a yammering and a clamoring.
the sunset ablaze,
twilight following like an ancient shadow.
thus
the third act commences
car lights zig zagging,
making strange neon lines,
frantic poetry.
hush...
glittering towers loom, unworldly citadels
starry lights of our own making
slowly an aria into the haunted hours
of which
there is no intermission.
the crescendo of sound and light
the trumpeting of daybreak
again...
My favorite place in all of the city. The view's of lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge are amazing. If you want to make a nice walk out of it, start out in Manhattan and walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and over to the promenade, or the other way around. Best seen at night with your significant other or a group of friends.
Ah the Promenade. I've become a bit spoiled because what was once a amazing and rare view of Manhattan I can get anytime but going out and sitting on my roof, I feel a little spoiled. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade may not be the best view of Manhattan you can get but it certainly is on the top 5 or so (I only say this because you can't really get a good look at the Crystler or Empire building). You're view here is the Brooklyn Bridge and everything south of that on the east side of Manhattan (duh). It's a beautiful mile long or so paved promenade with a wide walkway and benches the whole way down. Located in the most beautiful area of Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights) its very easy to get to if you take the 2/3 to Clark St and walk straight down to the water.
I'm not much of a reader but this is this ideal place to sit and relax with a good book. If you've never been I would definitely go during dusk/dark for a spectacular and almost magical view of the city (it's a great date spot or spot for someone visiting the city).
The greatest walkable view of NYC from Brooklyn!
When I use to live in Brooklyn Heights I use to come here with my ex-boyfriend all the time at all hours of the night and day. And it was always a treat. And safe, and clean. I have also come here with visitors from out of state- great for touristy pictures and sight seeing. Good spot to read a book, or to bring my little girl cousins to play at the adjacent park during the summer. A must see when in BK.
5*er= Cinco estrellas from all POVs
Hold hands, sunsets, sunrises, kiss kiss, park benches, ice cream, dogs, dogs, dogs, funny people, old people, fat people, skinny people, more hand holding, hipsters, break dancers, more kisses, skateboarders, rollarbladers, kids, kids, kids, more hand holding, kiss kiss kiss.
And what a view.
I live in downtown Brooklyn and this is where I come to escape the concrete and remember that there is water around. The views are amazing and now that the waterfalls are up and running there are some amazing pictures to be taken. Go around sunset, get dinner on Montegue and come back when it is dark. Bring your camera.
I wish the walkway was longer.
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is EASILY one of my favorite places in the world. It has an incredible view! I mean, just look at the pictures, and the real thing is even better. Whether it's day or night, the city looks beautiful under any light. I was staying a couple blocks from here and basically discovered it accidentally, and then revisited the Promenade every day I was staying there. It's truly breathtaking if you're a fan of New York City's skyline. Although you can't see the whole thing from here, it's worth the visit! Oh, and PS there's usually an ice cream truck parked near the playground so check that out if the weather is warm.
I was looking for an apartment in downtown Manhattan, and found myself edging farther and farther into that strange land which, as far as I knew, contained only three things: Junior's, Peter Luger, and hipsters.
One night, at a friend's behest, I took in the promenade.
My new zip code is 11201.
This is probably the best view of Manhattan ever. It's peaceful and breezy and romantic. The place to take your husband on a late-night date, or your out-of-town mom for a great walk.
The view from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade is amazing. This is a great place to see the Manhattan skyline. There are many good places to eat in the area too.
Just admit it. You've been to Brooklyn, yes, but you never really venture out of a three-block radius from a subway station, let alone walk along those streets with those coolly unmannered Brooklynites.
This is one place where you must leave all that Manhattan-holier-than-thou crap and just sit down because you haven't seen your city quite like this, over the BQE yet somehow zen because of the water and the view. You'll see couples hand in hand, walking dogs; kids pushing mini-versions of their strollers; people reading their dailies and their books delighted by the fact that they're by themselves.
The view itself is gorgeous. Oh, look, it's the tip of Manhattan and I can look at all of it and I'm not on a freaking ferry!
Not to mention the neighborhood. If you really wanted to gawk around and feel like you were a part of The Cosby Show just take a quick stroll around Brooklyn Heights; the old charm of the place will make you feel as if you're nowhere near Brooklyn in the 21st Century (save for the cars, of course).
If you've ever needed to have alone time, or have ever needed alone time with someone else, come here after a quick bite on Montague. You'll instantly feel better because you're really not by yourself: New York is looking back right in front of you.
Lovely. A perfect place to take out-of-town guests. Take the 2/3/4/5 subways to Borough hall/Court st, and stroll down Montague street to the waterfront. (I wouldn't recommend driving). Breathtaking views of Manhattan, by day or night.
If your out-of-town guests don't know much about Brooklyn, this is a great first impression. The neighborhood is cute, with old town houses, elegant gardens, and a ton of restaurants.
If you live in the area, make sure you take advantage. It's a nice escape at any time of day or night. The view of the downtown skyline is unbelievable. It can get a little crowded during the day, but no more than any other place in the city.
If I'm ever feeling down about my situation and need a reminder of why I came to NYC in the first place, I come here.
- would be a spring/fall favorite if it weren't in Brooklyn
- brilliant place for walks *especially if you have a pup
BREATHTAKING VIEW!!!!!!!
A must for everyone who visits New York to see. This 85 acre park has the greatest views of lower Manhattan...will literally take your breathe away, built atop the double decker BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) draws tourist all over the world for its spectacular views of the East river and the famous skyscrapers of Manhattan. The tragedy of the World Trade Center took away the once prominent sight which is the majestic Twin Towers... seen along the skyscrapers . There is an aura of sadness now when I stroll. Located in the East River in Brooklyn, you'll find this park south of the Brooklyn Bridge...right next to the residential area called Brooklyn Heights, a very expensive neighborhood. Its a 5 minute drive from Wall Street and most of the residents are Executives from Wall St. Some of the notable residents over the years include Walt Whitman who was said to have the 10 pages of his book "Leaves of Grass" and his poem,":Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" done there, Truman Capote also wrote his masterpiece "In Cold Blood", Norman Maller lived & died in his home along the promenade... Celebrities Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Dylan & Jennifer Connely also took residence there...
It is also considered the most romantic spot in New York....was the scene of movies like Annie Hall and Moonstruck. It has been a popular place for first dates, wedding proposals and anniversary celebrations. Its lines with flower beds, trees, benches, playgrounds.
At night when the city's skyscrapers are all lit up you'll find it really awesome. So when you come and visit...consider crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, walk by Cadman Plaza Park, then to the promenade...you could always go back to Montague Street for some great eats. Here you'll find all kinds of restaurants, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Greek, Polish ....Talking about Polish..if you want a taste of Poland in the heart of Brooklyn Heights go to Teresas's Restaurant on 80 Montague St.,their Polish Platter of Delicious Stuffed Cabbage, Sauerkraut, Kielbasy, 3 kinds of Pierogis ...served fried or boiled (your choice) & vegetable is delicious....with a cold beer its even better...
I've got great memories of this place...strolling with my friends.and a lot of times on my own....enjoying the view, your mind wanders and takes you to another place... maybe you too........might last a lifetime...Enjoy.
I can't think of many thing more romantic than taking a stroll on the promenade with the one you love after grabbing dinner on montague street. The view is just unreal.
My favorite thing to do is to sit on the back benches and watch all the happy couples, people walking their dogs and whoever else happens to be around.
If you're in NYC on your honeymoon I suggest dedicating one night to brooklyn heights and just walk around. Make sure your camera is on night portrait setting for when you take pictures so the skyline isnt all blurry.
Anybody who gives this less than 5 stars probably thinks that they could come up with better scenery in World of Warcraft.
its the kind of view at the end of the day that makes troubles go away, or makes them deeper, in a TV movie of the week kind of way where there's a slow montage of you sitting on the bench thinking about why your girlfriend dumped you, or why you stole those baseball cards, or why your bathroom keeps flooding.
You'll want to experience a first kiss here. Not necessarily 9 and 1/2 weeks Rourke/Basinger, you're still sort of in public, but smooch factor is high. (That reminds me of American Pie where Sherman goes, "Confidence is high, I repeat, confidence is high." good job Sherman. pull up your pants).
The way it curves on one end as you slope down to hit the very large and wide walk area going south, its perfection.
nice to be out on a nice day here.
Read about this place on Yelp and actually finally made it there last night.
All I can say is that it's amazing... It's one of those little gems in New York that you find on your own and can't decide if you want to tell everyone or not because you will look cool since you found it on one hand, but there will be more people there on the other. That's just one thing that ran through my head when I was there.
Anyways, this is the absolute perfect spot to go with some on a date or something like that and there are several very cool looking restaurants within eyeshots distance (down Montague street). The coolest part about it, I think, is that when you're taking someone there you can just pass it off like you're taking a walk and then you are LITERALLY on the promenade without any warning. I'd definitely like to take another trip during the day sometime but I think it's going to be hard to top that Manhattan skyline at night.
visited Fri at sunset 5/30/08
Amazing construction over the highway. Very peaceful and cool. Great for people watching and views of Manhattan & Bridges. Plus, good for a doggie fix. (Yeah, I was missing the pup back home.) And, GREEN.
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade makes me happy. It makes photo-hungry tourists happy. What more can I say?
Go at night, when the Manhattan skyline is all aglow and at its best (meaning: be-yoo-ti-ful). We may not have many stars in our city sky (though satellites here and there sometimes fool me), but the sparkling view from the Promenade almost (ALMOST) makes up for it.
This is my happy place. Others come to jog or walk their dogs or take in the view. I simply come here to think. Whatever your reason for coming to the Promenade though, its a must-see in Brooklyn. Not only does it have the best view, its completely serene and peaceful -- not usually a lot of hustle and bustle. If you don't live in the area, be sure to check out Montague street on your way to or from the Promenade. Great shops, good eats, quintessential Brooklyn Heights.
This is a great outdoor space, beautiful view of Manhattan and one of the best spots to watch the fireworks on the 4th. There are also some great restaurants nearby in between the subway and the Promenade.
I was brought over to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade after picking up some cheesecake from Junior's! It was a lovely spot to enjoy some cake and look out over Manhattan. A lovely place for a stroll or to sit and talk. Great photo ops too!
And of course, fabulous for couples at night!
This is usually the first stop on the planned tour that I created, for when friends or family come to NYC for a visit.
It offers the most beautiful unobstructed views of Downtown Manhattan. It's free, it's romantic, it easy.... the only reason I give it 4 stars it because I have to leave Manhattan to get there.
This is an awesome view. I love this neighborhood. You can have Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Governor's Island, The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park-- everything is there.
It's so peaceful to walk along the river and feel the cool breeze. Turn around and see the beautiful fire escapes and terraces from people's apartments. It's a great walk.
When I lived in the area I used Brooklyn Heights Promenade as a 'mood booster'. Just sitting there for 15 minutes and looking at the Downtown made me feel better. I am not going to describe how wonderful this place is... (see other reviews)
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is great for dates, deep and shallow conversations and has second best view of Lower Manhattan. (The place with the very best view is under Manhattan Bridge and it's kinda scary at night so it is not good for dates and deep conversation)
Really lovely, peaceful walk. Wandered from City hall in NYC across the Brooklyn Bridge and along the promenade (and back again). It's such a nice spot. The bridge was a ZOO, though. I could not believe how many people were walking across at 2pm on a Monday. For those ignorant tourists: WALK IN SINGLE FILE!!!! Great views of lower Manhattan from the promenade. Nice restaurants in the back streets.
