Brooklyn, NY
I'm writing a review because I think this shop seems to get a fair bit of undue criticism.
I'm a casual biker, so maybe I'm unaware of a core culture of bikers, biking, prices, etc.
The guy at this place seems to really love bikes. He's not an over the top friendly type, but I don't really care much for those sorts of people. Never seems genuine to me.
This guy gave me a discount I never asked for when I purchased my bike and gear from him, and he's always done fast and efficient work on my bike.
I like him, and I like his shoppe. -

I just spent $2 at this place without incident. The guy behind the counter was helpful.
There are signs up all over that place that would be off-putting if I was looking for a regular bike shop to deal with. Let's just say I was prepared for the worst after reading all the reviews, but left satisfied. -

I saw first hand why this bike shop gets such mixed reviews. I had avoided it because of said reviews and liked Bespoked in Fort Greene.
But it was too hot to walk my bike there so I went to the closer BH.
The owner was nice, quick service, no complaints from me.
But while I was waiting, someone came in with their bike to get fixed. They had a different experience. The owner was very short with him and not clear with his explanation of whether the bike could be fixed or not. The shop owner kept repeating himself over and over. The customer was really confused to why he was being such and dick and ultimately walked out. -

"shoppe"! Hillarious.
I have been going there for a few years and am not sure I ever actually knew the name of the place. I haven't actually bought a bike there (yet) but as a former/recovering bike geek their selection seems pretty good - but I am basing this only on the fact that I often get distracted looking at all the shiny new bikes. Boy, they make them so light these days. Not like the my first road bike. Man, it was heavy...
I could go on.
So, why am I writing a review of this place? Their repair guys are top-notch. My bike goes in there for it's annual tune-up every spring and comes rolling out of the store in pristine condition. They do magic. I have never owned a bike that operates so well as my bike does after a tune up at their place. For reals! -

A typical modest bike shop. No frills. Nothing fancy. Definitely worthy of immediate supplies or tune-ups. Not the best selection but I don't think they're trying to fool anybody. They get the job done and fast. I thought their prices were incredibly reasonable.

What do you do when you get a flat in your front tire after shopping at Trader Joe's, when you have a backpack full of groceries and you're about 4 miles from home?
Luckily this bike shop is just two blocks from Trader Joe's. I meant to change the front tire since this summer, so I got a Michelin Pilot City tire with Protek Max and reflective sidewalls. At $32 is a pretty honest price. I liked the fact that they have cross-sections of sample tires, so you can see for yourself what you are really buying. I already have a Michelin City Protek as back tired, and I like it: fast and reliable.
The tube was $6, $12 installed. Steep! This is the only thing I didn't like about the shop. Since I was getting a new tire, I didn't have much of an option. Service was very fast. -

Overpriced and sketchy bike literacy. Before I decided on an Iro Mark V Pro, I was looking into the Rush Hour. These guys were selling one but they claimed it was the 2009 model but it wasn't. It was the 2008. Then they tried to sell me some crappy fixed gear from China. I've also taken my old bike in for a tune up here, and they charged me way too much.
So despite living 2 blocks away from these guys, I'd rather walk my bike over to Bicycle Station in Ft Greene/Bed Stuy Hrmph. -

I have needed a new bike seat for quite some time, I ride 35+ mies a day, and what I have is just not cutting it. I have had trouble finding time in my day to do this chore, so when I saw this place on my ride home I though wow that's convenient....
I walk in, and make eye contact with the guy behind the counter.
Me: hi
no response.
Me: i need a new seat, and I think I need a new seat post too. are they size specific?
A-hole behind the counter: yes.
Me: can i bring my bike in and have you take a look.
A-hole: (very exasperated) I guess.
I went to get my bike, and decided that I would rather suffer with my current seat than give that guy the satisfaction of making a sale. I'm so sick of the pretentious attitude that I get in most Brooklyn bike shops. I'll keep going to my favorite shop in the city, where they realize my money is still as good as the next guys. -

I live in a bike shop desert. While I'm partial to NYC Velo in the EV for big-ticket stuff, A Bicycle Shop in Chelsea (closer to work) for friendly, knowledgeable service on everything else, and the internet for stocking up on basics, a last-minute errand forced me to seek this place out.
$14 for two tubes? Lame! -

Tony is the MAN - bought my first dirt bike from him in the '70's ... well my parents did - he knows his stuff and will fix your bike himself - good guy, an OG, if you will - so thankful that his shop has survived all these years!

What a great bike shop! I made my first visit last week and bought a helmet -- the owner, Tony, was helpful yet laid back, a good guy. I've also seen for myself that the prices are very good -- substantially better, in fact, than a larger, well known bike shop in Manhattan. I just got back from my second visit at the shop to get a rack for the bike -- turns out my bike needed an adaptor for the rack to fit and sure enough, Tony had just the part that was needed. Another EXCELLENT (and very affordable) experience! There;s a reason this mom and pop establishment has been in business for so many years. I plan on being a longtime customer!

They weren't open when they said they would be. I hate when businesses do that.
Bike rentals are $30/day. -

After a 30-second phone conversation with whomever was working, I decided I would much rather a.) pay for a car and waste a Saturday afternoon getting down to Gerritsen Beach or b.) wake up early and be late to work hauling my bike on the train to Bespoke. I don't care how convenient the shop's location may be, I'm not putting up with a sour puss.

Bear in mind that I'm new to biking...
I had originally planned on buying my bike from a place closer to me in Park Slope but decided to go with Brooklyn Heights Bike Shoppe because during my preliminary visits to different bike shops, this place had the best inventory and the most helpful and informative shop keepers than all the others.
I took a bike for a test ride and it was great. I just had to leave a credit card and my driver's license to do that. Another helpful person from the shop walked me through picking out a lock and then one of the owners helped me pick out a helmet. She was knowledgeable, not pressuring and best of all, she gave me time and space to be fussy and try on different models. I was there for almost an hour and a half buying the bike, getting info on locks, attachments and how to use gears. I needed a lot of hand holding and they did it wonderfully. Other places made me feel insignificant for not being a bike guru or were too busy to be as helpful -- this place didn't -- even if they were insanely busy on a Saturday afternoon.
I think all their bikes come with a one year service plan which is great... -

I read some not so great reviews, but went anyway because it's the closest bike shop to where we live. Although it did take a few minutes for the staff to warm up, after that they were very helpful, friendly, and didn't try to upsell us. The bikes are reasonable and it's a family operation, which I like.

I went to the Brooklyn Heights Bike Shoppe a few weeks ago. I was reluctant and rather hesitant given all the other reviews I had read about the friendliness of the staff. I was walking by and thought why not check out the place.
After a little while, the staff did warm up a bit and ended up being extremely friendly and helpful. I bought a new bike, which was reasonably priced - they helped me adjust it to my size and installed a basket, bell and lock. I was impressed. Needless-to-say, I recommend this neighborhood bike shop. Well done to Tony and his team. -

I went in today and received exceptional service from Tony. He clearly knows his bikes. I had a flat tire (punctured tube) on a tube that had been installed 24 hrs earlier by Ride Brooklyn. Ride Brooklyn was also a nice experience unfortunately they installed the wrong tube. Before Tony even looked at my tire, he guessed the problem (25 rather than 45 tube width, and wrong tube for my rim which happens to be chinese) and said he would "eat my bike" if he was wrong. Sure enough he was right, and he installed the right tube for the same cost as Ride Brooklyn. Very impressed with the knowledge and service - and he did it all after hours!
Will definitely go back there for bike needs in the future. -

The WORST BIKE SHOP with the WORST SERVICE!!!
First of all, they charge a whopping $90 for a simple tuneup
that took over a week. I decided to do it anyways out of convenience,
because I live in the area. They told me they'd call when the bike was ready, but they never did and also never picked up their phone.
When I eventually picked up my bike, I saw that the bill was $125.
When I asked about the surcharge, they said that the brake pads cost an extra $25, which was never mentioned when I dropped it off.
On top of all this, the owner was a total jerk, even before I saw the hidden fees. If you don't believe me, definitely check out some of the citysearch reviews. (http://brooklyn.cityse...)
Spare yourself the money and aggravation of patroning this dump. -

I am writing this review based on one experience. Judge it for yourself. I popped a tube going to work. Just some bad luck as that was the second tube I ruined in one week. The tubes I ordered online haven't been shipped yet. So I locked my bike at work. At lunch time, this was the nearest bike store or "shoppe" around so I headed straight over. Didn't have cash on me so he asked if I worked around there. I replied yes and he handed me the tube and said I can pay him tomorrow. That is good enough service for me.

Great quick service and reasonable prices. It's such a gift to have this only 5 blocks from my house!

In my experience, this bike shop is better than the reviews it gets. The guy who runs it (Tony, I believe) may not have the most polished set of social skills but I find him well-meaning, honest and attentive -- especially when you go there when its less crazy. I am glad to have it nearby and will continue to give it my business for tune-up and accessories.

I called to see if they had a part in stock. Some guy on the phone was really rude and then hung up on me. I know the part only cost about $5, but that's no reason to be rude and unprofessional. There are tons of bike shops in Brooklyn. Pick another one! The people at Dixons on Union Street are really nice.

I also have to agree with Mr T and say that this place is getting way too much bad criticism. First off this shop is located directly across the street from the Brooklyn Detention center, they work on police bikes and it's a family owned business for years, to make an accusation about the owner slinging cocaine out the back door is just ridiculous. We actually had a laugh about this when I told him. He's always busy and is extremely helpful. Just yesterday I brought my bike in, he had posted a sign stating "no repairs today" because he was just way too busy, but still he dropped everything he was doing to adjust my brakes and my gears. He gave me a very good deal on a new lock and a rear fender. I'm not a huge bike guy, I ride to get around mainly so I may just be speaking for the casual rider but I think this shop and Tony the owner are extremely honest, non condescending and extremely fair. He's a neighborhood guy that's been there for years and does good for his community. He may come off not so friendly at first but as soon as you strike up a conversation he's great.

Showed up Sunday at noon and of the three people "working" only one guy was able to sell me a bike (not entirely sure what others were up to but looked terrified when I asked them if they coudl help me). When I finally got him, he had no interest in actually speaking to me as if he was doing me a favor despite the fact I was about to give HIM money...there are just some people who don't belong in retail - which is fine except for the folks who actually work in retail! Location is good but it all ends there.

Had to buy a new tire pump the other day. Guy in Bk Heights Bk Shoppe was just friendly enough (read, he asked what I needed when I walked in). Got me my pump, charged me for it, switched the Schrader/Presta thing out for me without my asking for it, and then gave me some tire caps when I remembered I needed them and came back 15 minutes later.

It's nice to have a bike shop close by for the occasional spare tube and the like, but don't make the mistake of getting anything repaired here. I needed to get the back wheel on my road bike fixed. They said it couldn't be fixed and convinced me to order a new one. Two weeks later I leave with a new $100 wheel on my bike, but only later did I realize they never trued the thing--it was wobbling around so much that it started to rub against my brake pads. Now, either they didn't know that they have to true a new wheel, or they simply were too lazy to do it. Either way, it was incompetent. Bicycle Habitat on Lafayette remains my go-to, even if I have to walk my bike there.

I had read the negative reviews posted below, and dealt with the owner's ornery attitude on numerous occasions as a customer, but the bad service and bad attitude weren't enough to trump convenience until my most recent go round. This place doesn't adhere to it's posted hours. AT ALL. They have no working phone (only a fax) so don't expect to use that modern convenience to help determine whether or not you're wasting a trip. Took TWO WEEKS to get my bike back. When I arrived, the very aggressive owner told me it was my fault for not picking up the bike on THE DAY I was told it would be ready... thereby absolving them of the two weeks the bike shop was open at off hours or not open at all. Bottom line: TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. If you live local and think you'll buy a bike here because it will be easy to service- THINK AGAIN. BUY ELSEWHERE. ZERO regard for customers. It might be further afield, but you will find better service and what you need cheaper here: http://www.bicyclestat... I've been in the store dozens of times, and this will be my last. Everything negative you've read on this board does not surprise me at all. It's incredible that businesses like this can stay in operation.
