We have been meaning to go to the Brooklyn Children's Museum with our toddler for some time. I am only sorry we didn't go sooner...basically the day after my little one learned to walk would have been perfect timing.
There really wasn't a disappointing feature in this place, although lunch was completely ignored due to the A.D.D. the museum induced.
Every exhibit was challenging enough for the older children, but also enjoyable for the younger kids. My little one never stopped smiling until we left, then she let us hear it...she wanted to stay.
So I get a call...It seems that my niece volunteered me to Chaperone a school trip to the Brooklyn Children's museum. So on a friday, I had a date with a special girl and approximately 30 of her closest friends. Of course, we had only the best transportation, the yellow bus! As I sat and listened to children scream as they were being thrown into the air as the bus hit bumps, I watched their teacher masterfully begin a splendid song as if she was a world renown conductor. The children, instantly forgot about their journeys through the air and began to accompany her in what could only be described as the sound one hopes to hear when one hears the essential elements of harmony, calm, and youthful joy.
When we arrived, the parents went to the counter to pay. They took Amex. I was paired with another male parent and three children. We were assigned a wonderful tour guy who took us around a museum that was a microcosm of the businesses and staples that make brooklyn great. The children were allowed to walkin into stores and subway cars that were built into the place to resemble actual businesses. It was amazing. There was also a rule. You HAVE to touch. Everything! It was a great time. There was even a sandbox. There were fish. There were bread stores and pizza shops. It was great. The guide discussed lessons and engaged the audience. Afterward we ate. There was a cafeteria. There was also a gift shop. I was rather impressed with the place in general!
On the bus we went. The singing continued and eventually we arrived at school. I asked my niece if she wanted to leave with me. She said..Uncle Jamel, duh, I have to go learn. Then she blew passed me and walked into the classroom. Another child looked at me and said.."bye Niyah's uncle"...my purpose was served...sigh.....Five Year olds...

Absolutely loved it! Just recently visited them to see the Building Brainstorm exhibition! What a great place. We can easily spend an entire day there.

I was slated to go to the Brooklyn Children's Museum with my BF's nieces, but the children's nap/eat/play schedule didn't mesh with my nap/eat/work schedule. The children had an absolute blast and were totally worn out at dinner (Yea! Adult conversation dinner!). Their dad insisted we should go sometime, even without kids... His advice on how to not look like creeps: "Just carry around a tiny sweater." Yeah, um, thanks... I think that is advice on HOW TO look like creeps.

Great place. Full of fun exhibits. Squeaky clean - quite a feat with all the children and adults that visit it. A must for any parent that truly cares for the enjoyment of the little ones.
I had the pleasure of discovering BCM when a friend of mine starting working there as an educator. It's amazing.

A classic piece of NYC history. Great hands on fun for kids and adults alike. And what an exciting time as the new expansion unfolds before your eyes. Definitely put it on your NYC to-do list!

wow! this place is huge!
and nothing like tha old BCM I used to visit as a kid. oh no. this one really kicks!
there's this whole playground, I call it baby heaven. divided into sections: water play - you have a whole river to play with (don't worry, parents, they give out heavy smocks) there's a room for chalk art and other art, there is the "noise" place where they play with noisy stuff bang banging your migrane in, theres a place to play with blue (blue!) sand, there are other little rooms with doll plat couches etc etc etc (I didn't get to see the whole place because we had to leave already) there's a little space where only babies are allowed. parents have to take their shoes off and babies crawl araound and touch everything (and play with the hundreds of other crawling babies)
the museum itself is a heaven for older kids who are curious about space, nature, community, african art, architecture, etc etc etc. we didn't get to see the entire place unfortunately. there's a library there specifically for children. just wow! you gotta see it to believe it!
Absolutely fabulous! Go. If you don't have kids -- borrow your nieces & nephews, they will think the world of you. There really isn't a place like it elsewhere in NYC. If I had to characterize it I would say, "imagine taking small slices of: a playroom, AMNH, a library, your kid's room, a garden, a craft museum, a local neighborhood tour, and throw in a current exposition -- plus there's a theater w/ events." Just imagine, no, just go.
