Can the bagels get any bigger and better than this place? I lived in Astoria for a month and finally got a chance to try this place. After waiting in line and not being able to decide what to get, I asked for their honey wheat with cream cheese. YUMMY! The bagel was the epitome of a NY bagel.
I am no longer in Astoria but will definitely be back to try out their other selections.
Bagels are huge, lots of spreads.
The coffee is absolutely HORRIBLE here. I will usually buy my coffee at Dunkin Donuts (not great either but infinitely better than BB & Co.) and get my bagel to go.
I feel like they're slipping and relying on gimmicky-type stuff (like Panera Bread, french-toast bagels, "flat" bagels, etc., etc.) Yes, the bagels are really big and that usually blows people away, but they're just not as good as I remember. I HATE HATE HATE basically everything about Long Island but a co-worker of mine brought a dozen bagels from a place out there and they BLEW BB & Co. AWAY!
The spreads are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. I got one of those little containers of low-fat vegetable cream cheese (basically had a little carrot and pepper and scallion in there, but NOT much) and it was $10.99 a POUND! That's more expensive than NY STRIP STEAK! I was floored, and I will not make that mistake again.
I understand times are tough, but they're tough for everyone and gouging people for bagel spreads is NOT COOL.
Let me also re-address the coffee issue, which is HUGE in my opinion. How you can have a bagel place with such horrible coffee is beyond me. It's really a let-down because I would love to just make one stop in the morning, but it's just not possible here.
I'd also stay away from the grill-stuff (bacon eggs cheese etc) because they're also way overpriced. Go to Family Corner a few blocks away (31st Street and @1st Avenue) and get your egg sandwiches for 1/3rd the price. No exaggeration.
They're the best bagels in the area, but far from the best bagels in NYC.
OM NOM NOM NOM NOM
1. Go to brooklyn bagel.
2. order "one egg, cheese, sausage, plain bagel"
3. Thank me later.
This is why I came to NYC. These bagels are what breakfast in NY should be.
Forget about the weightwatchers points- life is about happiness. This place will make you happy!
great setup, free internet, good bagels! this is my new favorite 'outside of the apt spot', since i can still get some work done in the process! nice.
It stands to reason why they call this place Brooklyn Bagel even though it located in Astoria, Queens. They didn't want to scare people away since Queens is not typically known for their awesome bagels.... until now!
Try: English Muffin Bagels... they will win you over
Some of the cream cheese goodness they offer:
Strawberry
Lox
Apple pie
Veggie
Blueberry
Apricot (seasonal)
Pumpkin (seasonal)
I would have given them the ultimate 5-star rating except I was surprised they didn't offer a spicy cream cheese (such as jalapeno flavor) which is pretty standard at better bagel shops.
Go: First thing in the morning on weekends. There is a huge nightlife in the area which means eventually, those zombies will be on line at BB&CC to help nurse their hangover. Beat the crowds if you arrive before 8:30am.
Great assortment of fresh bagels and they are GINORMOUS, though they have minis available in several varieties (even those are probably at least 1.5 proper servings.) Many delicious cream cheeses to choose from - I dig scallion and bacon or lox and scallion.
The coffee is here is quite good too - it's nice and rich.
The only negative is the line - at peak hours of the morning, particularly on weekend, it literally reaches the door and tends to move slowly.
Long lines on Sat and Sun mornings - which I feel is a sing of good stuff inside.
Great coffee and bagels. Lots of choices of things to put on your bagel. Not much seating inside (so if you're looking for a relaxing spot to sit and read the paper whilst enjoying your coffee and bagel, this is not it).
Good place, but a bit pricey.
Hello BB&CC,
Remember me? Whole wheat bagel with lox cream cheese? Okay, good. I just wanted to say my first experience with you was very enjoyable. Even though one of your employees tried to chat me up, I appreciated that he really slopped that cream cheese on that huge ass bagel. Don't get rid of him in the recession, okay?
See you in a few months (because I can't justify having a massive bagel and a ton of cream cheese more than a few times a year).
Ciao,
Maiah J
love the bagels
the fresh orange juice
Forgetaboutit! If you want fresh bagels and cream cheeses, it's all about Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee Company. These bagels are as big as a baby's face and probably weight as much as a baby. Their bagels are nice and fluffy, but with the right amount of toasted crispiness. I ordered and ate an entire everything bagel with cream cheese, lox and scallions, but should have shared mine because I was completely stuffed (felt like I ate two meals). While waiting in the line that extended out the door, I saw people savoring bagel sandwiches with ham/bacon, egg and cheese. Those looked delish also. Next time I am there I think I'll try one of their bagel sandwiches.
I'm not from New York and can honestly say that the majority of bagels in my life have come from Dunkin' Donuts (read now, judge me later). Brooklyn Bagel has some really delicious bagels! They are HUGE and very filling. There's over a dozen possible cream cheeses and other spreads you can choose from, which makes the decision-making process a lot harder than I'd hope for. I opted for an everything bagel with sun-dried tomato cream cheese. Good choice! I would easily hit them up for bagels in the future. Yum!
I fully recognize how weird it is that I'm gonna go ahead and name a chain as having the best bagel in New York. But quality, is quality. And when it comes to Brooklyn Bagels, quality comes in size extra large.
The bagels are HUGE. You want cream cheese on your bagel? Get ready for cream cheese with a SIDE of bagel.
Of course, who am I to complain if someone wants to give me too much food. Especially when Brooklyn Bagel already had the foresight to craft the perfect MINI bagel. Yes, everything you love in their fluffy, perfect bagels but now in human size.
Get ready for a bit of a cluster$%&# when it comes to service, and if you want a bagel during peak bagel indulging times of late mornings on the weekend you should be prepared for a line out the door. But who cares? You're mere moments away from carbohydrate perfection.
what a GENIUS idea to put lox AND scallions together into cream cheese!
I was having sever withdrawals from Bagel Express which used to serve my chubby cravings on 2nd ave... but now that I am an astoria girl, I had to adjust... and adjust I did.
some things which astounded me:
-raspberry cream cheese
-apple pie cream cheese
-apricot cream cheese
-bagels comparatively to the size of la pinata buritos (some of you understand)
- mini bagels for when you DON'T want to eat something the size of your head
-smiley people on the other end of the counter
so that merits 5 stars in my book. and here is my favorite bagel in case anyone wants to make it a more enjoyable morning:
pumpernickel toasted
lox and scallion cream cheese
tomato slices
or...
garlic toasted
sun dried tomato cream cheese
ok... i think i'm on my way there now ...drrrroooool....
You would thing that the Brooklyn Bagel shop with the best bagels I've ever had, would in fact be located in Brooklyn. Preferably within walking distance to my apartment.
However, FML, it's in Astoria. This is the only thing I miss about living in that neighborhood. The bagels here are super fluffy, toast up amazing and they have MINI bagels (you know, for people who want to eat a normal sized one) and a variety of tofu cream cheese. So so delicious!!
Best bagel in Astoria. Possibly the best bagel in New York. Service slow. Egregiously oversized portions.
Brooklyn Bagel bagels are out of this world. My guess is that they have a higher sugar content than most other bagels, but they are de-freaking-licious.
If you are in need of a good chuckle, bring foreign visitors to this place. We brought some Norwegian friends here, and they talked for days about how big American portions are. Mini bagels are closer to a human size portion.
Service can be painfully slow, especially Saturdays and Sundays. Beware the $8 lox sandwich.
Totally delicious. The bagels are absolutely huge, and the minis are not so mini. I went late in the afternoon, but the bagels were still soft and and moist. My favorite is the everything, and I love how they bake the garlic, poppy seeds, salt, etc on both the top and the bottom of the bagel. Why doesn't every place do this?!? This is how it's done!
Oh, and tons of great cream cheese options, and tofu, too.
Best bagel in NYC! I go here at least twice a month and each time and I am in bagel heaven. My usual is a whole wheat everything with lox cream cheese. The bf gets sesame with olive cream cheese. We love it here. Bagels are huge and on the softer side which I like. They give you tons of schmear, it's wonderful. Good coffee too.
Bagelicious.
(SO delicious.)
You put them boys (and gals, ha!) on rock rock.
And we be lining down the block just to smell what you got.
So Bagelicious. (It's hot hot!)
I was lucky. Bagel-deliciousness was not even a block away from where I was staying. After being here once, this place pretty much became my daily stop before hitting up the Metro. My only wish is that I would've discovered it sooner!
The bagels are perfect - doughy in the middle, yet firm and warm on the outside. And the cream cheese selection..... WOW. My favorite was the lox cream cheese, perfectly flecked with salmon.
The guys who run the counter are really nice, as are the people who frequent here. I got to chat it up with a friendly cop and some firemen while waiting for my coffee to be poured. The coffee, by the way, is not so great. It was a bit watered-down for my tastes, but I'm STILL not gonna knock a star off.
Besides, at less than $5 a pop for a filling breakfast, this place is T to the A to the S T E Y, bagel you tastey.
(Sorry, I've had "Fergalicious" stuck in my head all this morning. Make it stooooooop!)
Bagels are delic!
Coffee is meh.
The 'mini' bagels are BIG.
The standards are MASSIVE.
FYI:
You can call ahead for a pick-up
... & they DELIVER ! ! !
This place is great!
I started going here right after I had found out that it was down the street from Dunkin Donuts. I like supporting little places like this before the big chains, and boy was it a good idea!
I ordered a bagel here, and basically got a loaf of bread! FABULOUS!
A bagel here for the same price as Dunkin Donuts can seriously last me all day long, I definitely cannot eat it all at once.
The coffee is a hit or miss (sometimes it's too sweet). Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that, everything here is terrific!
Definitely a great place to come sit on a Sunday afternoon :]
Classic A-list.
Hanging out in the seating area is not recommended. Get it takeout.
I suggest:
-Salt bagel with regular cream cheese
-Sesame bagel with veg. cream cheese
Hands down, this place has the best bagels I've ever eaten in my life. Simply incredible. One word of advice: order a mini bagel (which is the size of most regular bagels) unless you have a huuuuge appetite. Their cream cheese is incredible and made with the freshest ingredients -- my personal faves are the blueberry cc and lite veggie cc. I'm also obsessed with their greek yogurt topped with granola and berries - mmMMmMMMmm.
Enough talking.. get over there and eat a bagel (or 2) already!
Crap! I thought this was a chain. Sadly, I'm leaving Astoria for Manhattan and will no longer be able to enjoy the delicious croissants here. This small restaurant has amazing bagels and pastries. The tables are almost always full and even though there is always a line, I will gladly wait 5-10 minutes for the yummy food here.
This place makes some good (and large) bagels. I had there bagel sandwich, with lox, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Great combination! It was large enough to make me full for a couple hours, and it was only $7, which isn't bad at all.
I have two complaints. First, the bagels were good, but not amazing. I'm still looking for that amazing New York Bagel. And the second is that the service was really disorganized. But maybe that's just what I have to expect when I eat in Astoria.
ten million stars.
Everything bagel.. is sooooooo perfect w/ butter on it..
Regular coffee..... is sooooooo smooth w/ milk on it..
Muesli cereal........ is sooooooo healthy w/ yogurt on it..
Soy crisps............. is sooooooo crunch w/ ketchup on it..
What is NY without the perfect bagel? This may just be the place (at least in Queens). The line can get close to the door, and with good reason: The bagels are so fresh and large and the cream cheese selection is delicious. I have never been able to finish the regular sized bagels which are usually overflowing with cream cheese. The apple cream cheese is insane in a good way...cheesecake on a bagel anyone? The seating here is limited, and I find it quite annoying that so many can just sit and do work without eating or drinking a thing (management should say something).
The best bagels and cream cheese.
The chocolate chunk cookies aren't so bad either.
If I lived any closer I'd be in carb heaven.
Pretty damn good bagels, even considering the absurdity of not being able to get a table in ASTORIA.
During my 10 minute wait in line on a Saturday afternoon, I debated the merits of paying a whole extra dollar for a special kind of cream cheese on my bagel. (It's $1.80 for a bagel and cream cheese but the price jumps to $2.95-$3.50 for something like scallion cream cheese, sun dried tomato, lox spread, etc...) Since it was my first BB bagel, I decided to splurge and get the lox spread for $3.50.
It was not worth it. I mean, the pumpernickel bagel was great and they gave me enough lox spread to put on at least three bagels, but the lox chunks were few and far between. It might as well have been regular cream cheese.
So now I know to stick with the cheapo bagel and cream cheese. And next time I'll also ask for less cream cheese, because I had to scrape off a big, gross pile of it.
Looking over the reviews here, I decided to venture out to queens for this place. I guess the other reviewers hyped it up too much because I wasn't too thrilled or impressed with the place. The service definitely wasn't up to par. While trying to order we were blatantly ignore and there definitely wasn't enough room for the amount of business they seem to get. Their bagels were pretty good but nothing too amazing, but maybe I'm just being a baker's daughter. Also, Matt (my boyfriend) had a black coffee there and he said it wasn't even that hot and had a "bearable" taste, I just stuck with some water.
Though I must say that the cream cheese/spreads selection was amazing as well as their salad toppings selection. They offer small bowls of lettuce and leafy greens and then you go up to the counter and tell them what you want in your salad. They mix it all up for you in a bigger bowl with dressing and such. The decor was very nice as well and the place itself was very cute and clean. The front of the shop is all glass and is perfect for people watching, that is if you can even get a seat.
I gave up carbs as a life choice, so going in here makes me weep a little bit. HOWEVER, their shrimp and chicken salads are so insanely good and reasonably priced. They are packed on the weekends, but it is definitely worth the wait.
Dear Carbs,
I miss you. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into your doughy flesh once again. I ate too many of you at one point, so I must detox and regain my food composure, but I know we shall meet once again
xoxo
Miss Karen
THE BEST BAGEL I HAVE EVER HAD! OOOOOOOOH The best. Try a toasted plain bagel with their cinnamon raisin walnut cream cheese. AMAZING. The place is really nice, clean, great variety, food is fresh and everything they offer tastes AMAZING.
It's usually packed for a reason - I defy anyone to find a better bagel place within an 8 block radius of it. You can get any kind of bagel you want (I usually go with the garlic bagel with scallion cream cheese) and they have a wide variety of spreads and tasty lox. As mentioned before, it's clean and nice looking.
They'll make you a bagel sandwich as well, but those aren't up to the level of just bagels and spreads. They also have a variety of pre-made salad in a box type things, but never tried those.
Still don't know why they're calling it BK Bagels though...
I walk by this place every morning on the way to the subway and every morning I am tempted to go in an order something. Bagels 5 days a week? Yeah, probably not the healthiest diet. Thank god the long lines (which will add about 10 minutes or more to my commute) are there to convince me to keep walking.
In all honesty, I've never had anything here but the bagels. But they are GOOD bagels. Really good. I am partial to the plain with either scallion cream cheese or the strawberry spread. The garlic bagels and sesame bagels are also quite tasty.
Is this place worth the trip from more than a couple subway stops away? Probably not. But those of us in the Broadway/Steinway area are lucky to have this place in the neighborhood.
I do like this place but the line is frequently out the door on the weekends and its tough to get a seat.
The best bagel place ever. I walk 15 blocks almost everyday just to get bagels from there. On the weekends, the line is always to the door, but it usually only takes 10 or 15 minutes...definitely worth it! Try to tofu cream cheese!
So the review I wrote was from back in the summer....I recently went back and had a much better experience. Someone took my order right away, confirmed my order and had it to me in less then five minutes. MUCH, MUCH better then my first visit.
I went there today instead of going to my normal bagel shop. They had a good selection of bagels. I had a whole wheat with strawberry cream cheese. It was the best strawberry cream cheese I have tasted in the city. Besides bagels they have a selection of salads and soups for lunch. Pretty good but will not become my regular bagel shop.
I stopped by for dinner tonight and picked up my favorite bagel sandwich. This time I added pictures. It was tasty! Enjoy!

I adore this place. They have a huge selection of both bagels, but also flavored cream cheeses. Honestly though, even a plain bagel with plain cream cheese is done right. They have whole wheat everything bagels! Amazing! They also have "regular" size bagels (which are enormous) and "mini" bagels (which are more manageable to consume). I always get a mini bagel and I'm full until dinner. If you go on the weekends (even in the afternoon), you will be waiting in line. It can be annoying to get a table - some people feel the need to sit alone and read the paper and NOT eat bagels for two hours. So have an alternate seating game plan when you come here.
