I am going to have to say that I believe Brown Horn is the BEST tack store in Southern California. They have a great selection of products at awesome prices. They carry all of the big name brands.

I purchased a Beval Natural saddle from there for $1500 when it retails for $2200. The saddle was brand new - no flaws at all. The guy just told me that they marked it down to get it sold. All of the saddles I saw there seemed to be marked down significantly less than retail price. It's like they are having a saddle sale every single day! From what I saw they carry Pessoa, Stubben, Barnsby, Bevel, Henri De Rivel, Bates, etc. Their saddle trial policy is 7 days which is definitely nice. Of course if you bring the saddle back it must be in like-new condition but that's the normal saddle trial policy. Riding 7 days in my Beval was enough time to know it fit my horse and I great.

I also purchased a Charles Owen AYR8 for $285 when they retail for $348. This helmet was just released by CO and I haven't seen it on sale yet anywhere. The $285 price wasn't a sale price either, that's what they had the helmet listed as. Really crazy good deal! They have GPA's as well but I didn't pay too much attention to them because I really love the CO AYR8.

These are just two purchases I have done and that alone is $763 in savings! I have also purchased tall boots, a girth, bridle and show clothes from Broken Horn and saved a lot more than I would anywhere else, including http://SmartPak.com.

I live about an hour away from Broken Horn but it is definitely worth the drive. I wish I were closer or else I'd buy all my tack + feed from there but I guess that is a good thing for my bank account because then I'd probably be there daily. Since it's not so close I will do all my small shopping for horsey stuff at my local tack shops, and go to the Broken Horn for my spendy items because I know I will save a lot more money there than anywhere else.

I liked this place. They had a good selection of helmets, from the cheapest Troxels to the new GPAs and Charles Owens. The size selection was limited for some models, but the space is nice to try things on. I was helped by a very kind older lady who  seemed brusque at first but it was just a first impression - she was knowledgable, fun, and way more up to date on hunter trends than I was!

Their prices are more competitive than Dover's on the items I compared (breeches, helmets).

I also dropped my old (and now old school) close contact  saddle off with Trevor to get reconditioned for $45 (since it had been in storage for 12 years). He was very friendly and knowledgable; I'll get it back in 10 days so we'll see how gorgeous he makes it.

Overall, well worth the drive from Long Beach. Not the Nirvana that I remember the Plaistow NH State Line Tack being, back in the day. But the biggest selection in all price ranges of tack and apparel I've found so far.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, but open all the other days.

Their store hours aren't the most convenient if you need to stop by on a Monday or a  Tuesday (which is their days off).  They also close quite early - at 6 pm from Wed-Sat and at 5 pm on Sun.

Broken Horn is a specialty store that sells a variety of saddlery supplies for your horse-riding needs...like cowboy boots, saddles, buckets...and they also have repair services on premise.  So for that cowboy or cowgirl in you, Broken Horn's probably got it.

But I don't do horse-riding, I come here for the pet supplies.  I know, it's deceiving and you would never think that a saddlery store sells such items but This is where I pick up my monthly bag of Canidae dry formula dog food for my furry friend Oreo.  As some of you may know, Canidae is available only in various pet stores - Broken Horn not only carries it but at a very competitive price.

Even if you don't ride a horse it's worth the trip out here for the second floor, which has a HUGE selection of boots and western clothing for all ages!  Wrangler jeans in every style and size.   Look out for their big sale weekends where everything is discounted, there are hourly raffles for really great stuff, and the hot dogs are free.

The only reason they're not getting the full 5 stars from me is that they devote too much of their floor space to the hoity-toity English riding stuff.  Sheesh -- this is the San Gabriel valley!  We're Westerners!
